Introducing N-light...
...Mackwell Electronics introduces N-light, a DALI emergency
monitoring system, designed and developed to facilitate
every requirement from basic emergency monitoring,
through to multi-site remote system management.
Let us show you our vision...

N-light & DALI...
...Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) is an
open communication protocol developed by leading
manufacturers within the lighting industry and
defined under international standard IEC 62386.
Originally developed for controllable lighting ballasts, the DALI protocol
now encompasses a wide range of intelligent lighting technologies
including the particular requirements for emergency lighting.
DALI provides a simple, reliable and extremely robust means of
communication for lighting systems whilst offering maximum flexibility
and convenience for system designers, installers and end users.
As a member of the AG DALI working group, Mackwell Electronics
has established itself within the DALI community as world leaders
in DALI emergency lighting products and this has enabled us to
forge relationships with some of the biggest names in the lighting
industry. Mackwell is also represented on the technical working
group for the DALI standard and this allows us to be at the forefront
of new developments and initiatives within AG DALI.

Series connection
Star connection
Mixed connection topologies
SIMPLE WIRING
MULTIPLE TOPOLOGIES
FLEXIBLE GROUP CONTROL
No specialised data cable or tools are
required for wiring to luminaires. The
low data rate and high interference
immunity of the DALI specification
allows standard mains cable to be
used (for example 5-core NYM cable).
N-light allows series, star or mixed
connection topologies to be used
for maximum flexibility in system
design and installation. N-light
additionally specifies the optional
feature within the DALI specification
for polarity-free connection of
data wires, thereby minimising
the chances of wiring errors.
As well as being addressed
individually or altogether (broadcast),
every device on the DALI system
may belong to any of up to 16 group
assignments. Group assignments can
be used to apply emergency tests
to predefined areas of a building,
and can be re-configured at any
time, for example, to accommodate
changes in building usage
without the need for re-wiring.

DETAILED STATUS REPORTING
N-light provides a comprehensive
picture of the historical and realtime status of the emergency
lighting installation. Automatic
status notifications are logged by
the system whenever a fault or
test failure is detected that could
compromise the safety of the
system. A full record of system status
is available for hardcopy print at
any time - N-light Net offering the
additional option for full notification
via SMS message or e-mail.
COMPLIANT FOR
EMERGENCY LIGHTING
International and national
legislation and guidelines dictate
that it is essential for emergency
lighting to be specified, installed
and maintained correctly.
N-light is designed to work with
Mackwell’s range of AT4 DALI
emergency products to provide a
straightforward route to compliance
for the system designer with safety
being the number one priority.
SAFETY BY DEFAULT
As well as conforming to the DALI
requirements of IEC 62386, all
Mackwell AT4 DALI emergency
products incorporate AutoTest
as standard. This ensures that
emergency luminaires adopt a default
self-test programme complying with
the requirements of IEC 62034 until
a DALI bus is connected and a valid
command is received. This aligns
with the DALI control philosophy
of “distributed intelligence” and
allows the responsibility for overall
control of the system to be allocated
to specific components according
to operating requirements.

N-light Base...
...N-light Base enables emergency lighting monitoring
through a discreet control panel facility.
Each N-light Base unit is capable of monitoring up to 2 DALI loops with a
maximum of 64 devices per loop, thus lending itself to small to medium-sized
building installations. Utilising Mackwell’s proprietary N-light software, the user
is able to individually configure and commission each N-light Base network.
• Single touchscreen control.
• Up to 128 emergency luminaires on each monitoring system.
• Preloaded touchscreen operating software.
• DALI emergency compliant system.
• Commissioning via USB connection (commissioning software
included on CD / available from www.mackwell.com/n-light).

N-light Net...
...N-light Net enables emergency lighting
monitoring via a central control PC with the
option of remote web-access and reporting.
N-light Net utilises intelligent DALI gateways, thereby
allowing emergency devices across multiple DALI
loops to be monitored via the building’s Ethernet
network. The web-access features of N-light NET
provide the user with the flexibility to control and
monitor sites via a secure remote access point.
• Unlimited emergency devices via
DIN-rail mounted gateways.
• Easy integration into existing Ethernet networks.
• Twin port gateways eliminates need for
additional hubs and switches.
• Web-access option for secure remote
control and reporting .

Installation & commissioning...
...N-light incorporates features that work with the latest DALI standard to ensure
installation and commissioning can be completed simply, quickly and efficiently.
• Wiring centre design allows for sign-off of ‘first-fix’ wiring prior to the DALI commissioning phase.
• ‘Fast-commission’ feature (where immediate or temporary occupation of a building is required).
• Identification aids for use by engineers during commissioning
or when locating units for routine maintenance:
• Integral sounder.
• Unique serial number marked on every
product (including barcode-readable format).
• Identification tool for simple
one-man commissioning.
• Straightforward entry of installation information via laptop or remote PC.

AT4 AUTOTEST
The test and validation process
is a critical part of the design and
LIGHT THE WAY
development programme and with
over 30 years experience within the
lighting industry, coupled with state
of the art equipment at our disposal,
Mackwell is perfectly resourced
to ensure that all products are
designed, tested and manufactured
in accordance with all appropriate
local and international standards.
The European Norms Electrical
Certification (ENEC) mark certifies
LIGHT THE WAY
the safety and performance
compliance of a product with the
respective European standards.
Mackwell Electronics has an ENEC
approved test facility which allows
us to test our own products to
the appropriate standards.
The latest range of AT4 AutoTest
modules provide automatic
LIGHT THE WAY
self-testing in accordance with
IEC 62034. AT4 AutoTest performs a
commissioning test upon connection
to a permanent mains supply, a
30 second monthly functional test
and a full rated duration test at
yearly intervals. Any fault which is
highlighted during these periods
is identified by the indicator
changing from green to flashing red,
accompanied by an audible alarm.

Q-Start™
Each module
equipped with
Mackwell’s patented
SmartCharge™
provides a full charge
to the batteries for
16 hours, thereafter
reducing to 10% to
maintain charge level.
Products incorporating
Mackwell SMPS
technology (switched
mode power supply)
embody the most
efficient electronic
switching regulators.
SmartStart provides
initial cathode
heating to facilitate
lamp striking.
Designed specifically
for use with amalgam
lamps and approved
by the leading
lamp and battery
manufacturers, our
patented technology
eliminates all of the
problems associated
with striking
amalgam lamps in
emergency mode.
T5 lamps are
particularly
susceptible to cathode
damage if they are
not run correctly in
emergency mode.
SmartCharge™
reduces energy
consumption and
reduces the operating
temperature of NiMH
batteries by up to 6ºC.
As a result these
products cover a wider
voltage range, reduce
thermal operating
temperatures, are
more efficient, and
are lighter and smaller
in size. In addition
modules with SMPS
provide the correct
charge regime
for either NiCd or
NiMH batteries.
When the lamp
has struck, the
heating is removed
to maximise BLF.
Mackwell therefore
ensures that your
luminaire complies
with BS EN 5266 and
BS EN 60598.2.22.
The low power
sources and simple
control techniques
associated with
emergency lighting
have traditionally
dictated that
emergency lamps
are run outside
manufacturers’
specifications.
Q-StartTM provides
the perfect solution,
ensuring optimum
start-up conditions to
preserve lamp life.
Q-Start™ is unique
in providing an
emergency solution
that delivers lamp life
comparable to that
of mains ballasts.
