MINESHAFT SON LOOKS
TO MAKE THE ‘NEWS’ AGAIN
UNTAPABLE BACK FOR ANOTHER RODEO
by Alan Carasso
When Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC’s Untapable (Tapit) loads
the gates for Saturday’s GII Azeri S. at Oaklawn Park, she will
become the first winner of the GI Kentucky Oaks to make an
appearance at age five since 1998 Oaks victrix Keeper Hill
(Deputy Minister) did so fully 16 years ago. The homebred, who
had--by her lofty standards--a disappointing 4-year-old campaign
in 2015, looms a very heavy favorite in the course-and-distance
prep for the GI Apple Blossom H. Apr. 15. Cont. p6
ANOTHER MILESTONE FOR PLETCHER
Suddenbreakingnews | Coady Photography
By Christie DeBernardis
Samuel Henderson’s Suddenbreakingnews (Mineshaft),
winner of the GIII Southwest S. Feb. 15, gets the slight morningline nod in a loaded 14-horse renewal of Oaklawn’s $900,000
GII Rebel S. Saturday evening. Never worse than second in six
trips to the post, the Donnie Von Hemel trainee captured the
Clever Trevor S. at Remington Nov. 6 and missed by just a nose
to the reopposing Discreetness (Discreet Cat) in a sloppy
Springboard Mile there Dec. 13. The gelding will have to
contend with the 14-hole Saturday, but he broke from stall 13 in
the Southwest, where he uncorked a powerful late rally down
the center of the track to win convincingly. Cont. p3
Shut out since winning the 3,999th race of his career last
Sunday, trainer Todd Pletcher earned victory 4,000 when 4-yearold firster Eagle Scout (Tapit) prevailed in Friday’s fifth race at
Gulfstream Park, a maiden-special over the track’s one-turn mile.
Pletcher, 48, becomes just the 10th conditioner in the history of
the sport to achieve the milestone, a list that features no fewer
than five Hall of Fame trainers, including Pletcher’s mentor D.
Wayne Lukas. Pletcher spent parts of seven years under Lukas’s
tutelage before branching out on his own in late 1995. “We’ve
been blessed with a lot of great horses and a lot of great
opportunities. There’s a lot of people to be thankful to. It’s fun,”
Pletcher said. Cont. p8

UPSTART SHARP FOR RETURN TO ACTION

A leading early-season 3-year-old of 2015, Upstart (Flatter) ended

Mineshaft Son Looks to Make the ‘News’ Again cont. from p1
Southwest runner-up Whitmore (Pleasantly Perfect) looks to
get the better of the chalk this time for Robert LaPenta, Harry
Rosenblum and Southern Springs Stables. A dominant debut
winner at Churchill Nov. 6, the gelding finished fifth in the
GIII Delta Downs Jackpot just two weeks later, but returned to
winning ways sprinting in a local optional claimer Jan. 16. Also
exiting the Southwest is American Dubai (E Dubai) (third), Siding
Spring (Warrior’s Reward) (fifth), Discreetness (seventh),
Z Royal (Eskendereya) (eighth) and Cutacorner (Even the Score)
(ninth).
Dale Romans was forced to call an audible when “TDN Rising

days prior to an expected start in Gulfstream’s GII Xpressbet.

earned his ‘Rising Star’ last time when charging home late to a
decisive six-length victory against a strong optional claimer field
going this distance in Hallandale Jan. 9.
Hall of Famer Bob Baffert captured last year’s renewal of this
test with Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pioneerof the
Nile) and hopes to score his sixth win in this event since 2010
with Cupid (Tapit). Fourth on debut sprinting at Los Alamitos last
December, the Coolmore runner improved to second at Santa
Anita Jan. 9 and romped by 5 1/4 lengths when extended to a
route last time in Arcadia Feb. 7. Scratched from last weekend’s
GII San Felipe S. in favor of this test, the $900,000 KEESEP buy
enters off a best-of-23 six panels in 1:11 3/5 there Mar. 11.

“With the large field, we need a good break and to get a good
position and hopefully, he’ll take it on from there,” Baffert’s
chief assistant Jimmy Barnes told the Oaklawn press office. “You
need the trip. Hopefully, he’s talented enough where he’ll get
out of the gate, establish position, and show us what he’s really
made of. He seems like he’s improving and we’re just testing the
waters. You really don’t know until they do it, but this our
normal routine and we expect big things.”

“The long layoff is always a concern,” said O’Neill to the
Oaklawn press office. “It’s ambitious, but when they’re doing
good you’ve got to take chances. This is chancey, but we have a
lot of faith in Ralis. I can see where the outsider looking at his
form would think ‘What are you doing this for?’ But we’ve seen
enough from him in the mornings and enough in the afternoons
to think that when he’s doing this well, which he is right now, he
deserves his chance. When he’s right, which I think he is right
now, he’s a top horse.”
Hall of Fame finalist Steve Asmussen also sends out a pair of
intriguing runners in WinStar Farm’s Creator (Tapit) and Winchell
Thoroughbreds’ Madtap (Tapit). Creator took some time to put it
together, but did so impressively last time with a late-running 7
1/4-length success over this track and trip
Feb. 27. Madtap, who earned his diploma on grass in his Indiana
unveiling last September, also enters off a dominant victory,
romping by six lengths in a local optional claimer at this distance
just two weeks ago. Field p5

TDN’s Steve Sherack and Brian DiDonato will make $50 Win/Place bets on each Kentucky Derby prep and Triple Crown race.
The handicapper with the highest bankroll after the Belmont Stakes wins. Scratches will result in the post time favorite.
Last Week - Knew I was in major trouble when Economic Model
was already under a ride before hitting the half-mile marker in
the TB Derby en route to a last-place finish... Exaggerator,
meanwhile, received a pretty questionable trip in the San
Felipe–was way too far behind early and turned in a very
powerful middle-move--and just got tagged late for second. Can
certainly see myself landing on him again. Total: $337.50.
GII Rebel S. - I can’t imagine him going off at his morning-line
quote--half that number would be fine--but Cherry Wine (Paddy
O’Prado) should still offer more than enough value in this big
field. The gray couldn’t have been any more visually impressive
in a pair of breakout wins–9 1/4-length maiden tally in CD slop
Nov. 28 and a ‘TDN Rising Star’ performance while clearing his
N1X condition at GP Jan. 9 over a next-out winner. Being forced
to sit out last month’s FOY with a slight fever and a puzzling
performance by his stablemate Brody’s Cause at Tampa are
obvious concerns, but not enough for me to stay away.
Selection: #11 Cherry Wine (12-1).
Last Week - Making just his third lifetime start and first around
two turns, Outwork ran a bang-up second behind stablemate
Destin. His connections told me at OBS that they hadn’t decided
what they’ll do with him next, but I’m curious to see what they
decide... Smokey Image’s step up into the big leagues didn’t go
so well. He was hung wide throughout, but never made any kind
of run. Total: $732.50.
GII Rebel S. - I almost took Cupid (Tapit) in last week’s San Felipe
S., and like him even better in this spot. For whatever reason,
Bob Baffert is just borderline unbeatable when he ships to
Oaklawn for a 3-year-old graded stake. He’s won five of the last
six runnings of this race, and two of the last four Arkansas
Derbies. American Pharoah won both last year. Cupid, a
$900,000 KEESEP pick-up and half to two graded winners and
another listed stakes winner, really seemed to relish more
ground when breaking his maiden by 5 1/4 lengths on the stretch
out at Santa Anita last time Feb. 7. He covered his final five
sixteenths in more than a second faster than the runner-up
according to Trakus data, and figures to get even more pace this
time. He won’t be a giant price, but he seems to have the most
upside in this spot. Selection: #4 Cupid (7-2).

TARIS SEEKS ELUSIVE GRADE I WIN
By Christie DeBernardis
The Coolmore contingent’s Taris (Flatter) looks to score her
third straight victory and first at the highest level in Saturday’s
GI Santa Margarita S. at Santa Anita. The “TDN Rising Star”
made a name for herself as a sprinter, winning the 2014
GII Raven Run S. and 2015
GIII Rancho Bernardo H.
Third in the GI Breeders’
Cup F/M Sprint Oct. 31,
the Simon Callaghan pupil
was shipped to New York
and stretched to a mile
next out in Aqueduct’s
GIII Go for Wand H. Nov.

27, which she won by 2
1/2 lengths. The bay proved that was no fluke next out when
romping by 5 1/2 lengths in the 1 1/16-mile GII La Canada S.
Jan. 16 and tries nine furlongs for the first time in this test.
SATURDAY • MARCH 19, 2016
"She couldn't be training any better," Callaghan told the Santa
Anita notes team. "She's got a good post. She relaxed well in the
La Canada and I couldn't be happier with the way she's going."
Stonestreet Stables’ “TDN Rising Star” Tara’s Tango
(Unbridled’s Song) also looks to post back-to-back victories here.
A close third in the GII Santa Monica S. Jan. 23, the Jerry
Hollendorfer trainee overcame a slow break to earn her first
graded success next out in the 1 1/16-mile GII Santa Maria S.
Feb. 13 and adds blinkers for this first try at Grade I company.
Gary Mandella sends out Santa Maria third-place finisher Living
The Life (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) for HnR Nothhaft Horse
Racing LLC. Winner of the GII Presque Isle Downs Masters S. last
September, the bay failed to fire when switched to the turf for
Del Mar’s GII Goldikova S. Nov. 1 and was fourth in the Santa
Monica prior to completing the trifecta last time in the Santa
Maria.
East Coast invader Penwith (Bernardini) is also hoping to score
her first win at the highest level for the red hot Kiaran
McLaughlin barn. The Godolphin homebred is two-for-two this
season, winning a Gulfstream optional claimer Jan. 21 and
following suit with a victory in the GII Royal Delta S. Feb. 13. She
is also only runner with a win at this distance, having captured a
nine-panel test at Saratoga during her 2014 campaign.

Untapable Returns in Azeri cont. from p1
Named the champion of her generation in 2014 after closing
the year with a tough score in the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff,
Untapable was rolled as the 1-10 chalk in this event last year
before recording her
lone win of the season in
the Apple Blossom.
While certainly not
disgraced in four
subsequent trips to the
post, she lacked the
killer instinct she
possessed during her
Eclipse Award-winning
season. Tagged on the

money by Got Lucky
(A.P. Indy) in
Keeneland’s GI Juddmonte Spinster S. Oct. 4, Untapable was set
to press on to a defense of her title in the Distaff, only to take ill.
Soon after it was decided Untapable would train on in 2016, a
potentially wise choice in a division that seems thin, at least east
of the Mississippi.
Realistically, the favorite can probably put up something short
of her best and still come home first here, and Theogony
(Curlin) looks a strong chance to complete the exacta. After
making the first dozen starts of her career on synthetic and turf,
she made a favorable impression in her first try over
conventional dirt, finishing second in the GII Falls City H. at
Churchill Nov. 26, one spot better than Call Pat (Lawyer Ron).
Forced to endure a wide trip when a neck second to Streamline
(Straight Line) in this track’s Pippin S. Jan. 17, she could not
overcome a modest pace in the GIII Sam Houston Ladies’ Classic
and finished a non-threatening fourth.
Call Pat overcame a slow pace set by Meshell (Elusive Quality)
in the Feb. 14 GIII Bayakoa S. and was up in the final strides for a
half-length decision over Streamline. Sarah Sis (Sharp Humor)
has run several races over shorter that would leave her in the
mix, including a victory in the GII Raven Run S. Oct. 17, but her
races at a route of ground leave something to be desired from a
speed-figure perspective. She was most recently a disappointing
fourth as the 7-5 favorite in the Bayakoa.

STONETASTIC LOOMS LARGE AT GP
by Christie DeBernardis
The speedy Stonetastic (Mizzen Mast) looks to take her 2016
record to two-for-two as the heavy favorite in Saturday’s
GII Inside Information S. at Gulfstream. Runaway winner of the
2014 GII Prioress S., the Stoneway Farm runner got her 2015
season off to a late start with a neck defeat at the hands of
subsequent GI Ballerina S. winner
Unbridled Forever (Unbridled’s

last August. The Kelly Breen pupil
romped by 15 3/4 lengths in what
was the equivalent of a paid

was eighth in the GI Breeders’ Cup
Stonetastic | A. Coglianese
F/M Sprint at Keeneland Oct. 31.
Splitting Best Behavior (Into
Mischief) and You Bought Her (Graeme Hall) when second in
the GIII Sugar Swirl S. here Dec. 26, Stonetastic returned to
winning ways with a five-length score over Miss Melinda (Malibu
Moon) in the local Miami Shores H. last time Feb. 14.
Mary and Chester Broman’s Bar of Gold (Medaglia d’Oro) has
been knocking at the door of a graded win for some time now.
The John Kimmel trainee closed out her sophomore campaign
with a trio of runner-up efforts in the GI Test S. Aug. 8,
GII Prioress S. Sept. 6 and GII Raven Run S. Oct. 17 and makes her
4-year-old debut here.

GI Mother Goose S. winner Include Betty (Include) next out in
the off-the-turf GIII Valley View S. going 1 1/16 miles at
Keeneland Oct. 24 and should appreciate the cut back in trip
here.

UPSTART RESUMES IN RAZORBACK
by Alan Carasso
About 14 months ago, Upstart (Flatter) looked as dangerous as
any horse getting aboard the Triple Crown trail, his dominating
5 1/2-length victory over Frosted (Tapit) in the GII Holy Bull S. in
his 2015 debut suggesting that the sky could be the limit.
Winless in six appearances since--with
one controversial DQ sprinkled in--the
handsome New York-bred gets back to
work in Saturday’s GIII Razorback H. at
Oaklawn Park.
Demoted from an apparent win in the
GII Fountain of Youth S. and runner-up
in the GI Florida Derby, the dark bay
was eased home in the GI Kentucky
Derby and raced reasonably close to an
above-par pace in the GI William Hill
Haskell Invitational S. before staying on
for third behind HOTY American
Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) and Keen
Upstart | Adam
Ice (Curlin). An even fourth behind the
Coglianese
latter after chasing a lively pace in the
GI Travers S. Aug. 29, Upstart was a never-really-in-it fifth to
Frosted in the GII Pennsylvania Derby Sept. 19 and called it a
season. Upstart looms the class of the field, assuming he’s ready
to fire off the bench.
SATURDAY • MARCH 19, 2016
Far Right (Notional) holds a recency and a homecourt
advantage over the morning-line favorite. The ridgling, winner of
last year’s GIII Southwest S. and second to American Pharoah in
the GI Arkansas Derby, was 15th in the Run for the Roses and

MOHAYMEN HOLDING HIS FORM
Shadwell Stable’s Mohaymen (Tapit), widely regarded as the
leading sophomore male on the East Coast, breezed a solid five
furlongs in 1:01 flat Friday morning at Palm Meadows as he

“It’s a pleasure to be on a horse like that,” Jaime said. “He’s
getting better every day, every race. He’s getting stronger,
bigger. We haven’t seen him really run yet. We expect him to
run a big race. He hasn’t shown everything. We’re in a good spot
right now. Today, everything went good.”
Friday’s work was Mohaymen’s second since easily accounting
for ‘TDN Rising Star’ Zulu (Bernardini) in the GII Xpressbet.com
Fountain of Youth S. Feb. 27. For his part, trainer Kiaran
McLaughlin continues to remain bullish on his charge.
“He worked very well. He’s doing great and he’s fit, and we’re
happy. We just have to keep working and keep him happy,”
McLaughlin said. “He’s got a great mind, and that’s all part of it.
He’s doing everything right and continues to. We’re not looking
for any changes.”
Mohaymen is scheduled to have his final Florida Derby work
over a half-mile Mar. 25, but it will be done in the absence of his
trainer. McLaughlin will be at Meydan for the Dubai World Cup
program, where he saddles--among others--Frosted (Tapit) in
the G1 World Cup, ‘TDN Rising Star’ Lady Shipman
(Midshipman) in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint and fellow ‘Rising Star’
Marking (Bernardini) in the G2 Godolphin Mile. McLaughlin is
expected to return to Miami Mar. 27.
Another Milestone For Pletcher cont. from p1
“I think the whole team enjoys these type of milestones,”
Pletcher continued. “When you get to these larger numbers I
think it makes you appreciative of every single one. Everyone is
significant and every win is significant.”
SATURDAY • MARCH 19, 2016
Already the all-time North American leading money earner
with better than $311 million, Pletcher has now won 767 races at
Gulfstream Park, including his first career victory a month after
taking out his license, and also registered his 3,000th success at
the Hallandale oval in 2012. He has won the training title at the
Gulfstream championship meet a remarkable 12 consecutive
years and has registered 134 stakes wins at the track, 94 of those
at the graded level. Pletcher has sent out the winner of the
GI Florida Derby on three occassions (Scat Daddy, 2007;
Constitution, 2014; and Materiality, 2015).
“Gulfstream has been good to us over the years. For whatever
reason, the style we train fits the style of this track,” he said.
“Horses tend to get involved early and I think that’s an effective
style. We’ve been fortunate over the years to have consistent
success here.”
The Eclipse Award-winning trainer on a record seven different
occasions, Pletcher has thee Classic victories--one Kentucky
Derby and two Belmonts--to his credit and nine Breeders’ Cup
titles.
The late Dale Baird leads all trainers with 9,445 career
victories. Pletcher currently sits in 10th overall and eighth
position behind other active trainers including Steve Asmussen
(7,252), Jerry Hollendorfer (7,054), Jack Van Berg (6,468), King
Leatherbury (6,465), Scott Lake (5,662), Lukas (4,748) and Bill

Nyquist (Uncle Mo) and Beholder (Henny Hughes) worked

GI Vanity S. June 4.
Nyquist went five furlongs on Santa Anita worktab in 1:01.40

passed away peacefully in her paddock Mar. 15 at Taylor Made

Undefeated in

to Mill Ridge stallion
Gone West. The
result was

$2-million purchase by Eugene Melnyk out of the 1999
Keeneland July Sale, who rewarded his connections’ patience
with a victory in the 2004 GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint and an Eclipse

gone on to be a sire of considerable influence at WinStar Farm.
In addition to Speightstown, Silken Cat produced four other
yearlings that achieved seven-figure pricetags at auction. Her

H.R. 3084 Best Opportunity for Meaningful Reform
by Matt Iuliano
I read with great interest the comments expressed by the
chairman of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission and
Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI)
stalwart, W. Duncan Patterson, at the annual meeting of the
Organization of Racing Investigators held recently at Delaware
Park (Delaware Regulator Argues USADA in Racing a Mistake,
TDN, Mar. 16, 2016).
Mr. Patterson’s comments fall in line with the campaign of
misinformation waged against H.R. 3084, the Thoroughbred
Horseracing Integrity Act of 2015, by opponents of the bill over
the past several months.
It is a campaign notable for the extent to which it
mischaracterizes the provisions of H.R. 3084 and for the
vehemence of the rhetoric it employs in condemning both the
mischaracterized legislation and those who support it.
And it is all premised on the bedrock assumption that
everything is totally fine in the realm of Thoroughbred
medication regulation. The following are some examples from
Mr. Patterson’s diatribe, contrasted with what H.R. 3084 actually
provides.
Mr. Patterson states, “The medications that are approved by
USADA are some medications which we do not allow in racing at
any threshold level. By the same token, there are other
medications we allow that they don’t allow. So our whole
medication schedule would have to be revamped under this.”
Mr. Patterson is clearly suggesting that H.R. 3084 would
require that the same schedules of permitted and prohibited
substances under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code
for human competition be used for horse racing.
This is absurd.
Section 4(a) of the bill authorizes formation of a new authority
with national jurisdiction to regulate all pari-mutuel anti-doping
matters.
Section 7 requires that all relevant sources of information be
considered when preparing the regulations, including the WADA
code, the Principles of Ethics of the American Veterinary Medical
Association applicable to horse racing, the Uniform Classification
Guidelines for Foreign Substances of the ARCI, and, for the
purposes of Mr. Patterson’s assertions, section 7(b). Cont. p10
HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 10 OF 10 • THETDN.COM
Section 7(b) expressly allows the initial list of substances
permitted in pari-mutuel horse racing to include those
substances listed in the ARCI Therapeutic Medication Schedule
Version 2.2, colloquially referred to as the NUMP - the National
Uniform Medication Program, which was developed and is
supported by a broad cross section of regulators, horsemen’s
groups and other industry organizations.
Nowhere in the bill does it require the regulatory authority to
implement the schedules and uses approved by USADA for
human sports in horse racing. The only revamping necessary
under H.R. 3084 would be for those 14 pari-mutuel horse racing
jurisdictions that have so far ignored the industry’s
state-by-state advocacy efforts to adopt the NUMP.
Mr. Patterson also states, “Currently USADA does 8,400 tests a
year. Nationwide, we do 300,000 tests. Travis Tygart, the head
of USADA, is obviously very knowledgeable, but when asked
what plan he had to ramp up his testing by almost 40 times, he
had no plan. When asked about the costs of their tests we were
told about $1,000 a test. Currently, we spend, nationally, $30
million on testing. Simple math will tell you we will go from $30
million to $300 million. Who in the hell is going to pay for that?”
This statement requires careful unpacking to keep the
erroneous assertions duly separated.
First of all, there is no U.S. racing lab that tests 300,000
samples. That is the aggregate amount of U.S. samples that are
tested annually. Drug testing laboratories are selected and
regulated differently among the 38 separate jurisdictions with
the dozen or so labs each following their own unique operating
standards and procedures.
H.R. 3084 would expand testing beyond the current levels
through mandatory out-of-competition testing. Moreover, only
those labs that meet the strict accreditation requirements
required under the bill would be permitted to test.
Secondly, it is ridiculous to extrapolate human testing costs to
horses, or other species for that matter, because of the different
substances, the frequency of detection, and the laboratory
methodology employed.
Section 9 of the bill authorizes the new national regulatory
authority to enter into agreements with state racing
commissions to implement, within their respective jurisdictions,
any of the components of the anti-doping program. These
agreements remain in place as long as the state complies with
the standards and requirements of the anti-doping program
established by the regulatory authority.
Section 12 of H.R. 3084 authorizes the new regulatory
authority to levy assessments on the states to cover the
incremental costs associated with complying with the
anti-doping program. Thus, the execution of the program within
the states relies upon leveraging to the fullest extent possible all
SATURDAY • MARCH 19, 2016
existing and available anti-doping resources currently deployed
within the states.
According to an analysis by McKinsey & Company, developed
with USADA’s input and presented at The Jockey Club’s Round
Table Conference 2014, the incremental cost of the anti-doping
program for pari-mutuel Thoroughbred racing would be
approximately $60 per start.
Mr. Patterson later states, “It has been proven that Lasix is
really necessary. Some may disagree, but it’s really necessary
to keep the horses running. And there are other medications
used on regular basis that are needed.”
It seems more than a bit ironic to hear the longtime ARCI
member utter such a statement on the threshold of the five-year
anniversary of an ARCI announcement Mar. 28, 2011, that
included the statement, “Today over 99% of Thoroughbred
racehorses and 70% of Standardbred racehorses have a needle
stuck in them four hours before a race. That just does not pass
the smell test with the public or anyone else except horse
trainers who think it necessary to win a race.”
Where in the bill is there an immediate prohibition of race-day
Lasix?
Section 7(b) contains the initial list of substances permitted in
pari-mutuel horse racing, which includes those listed in the ARCI
Therapeutic Medication Schedule Version 2.2 (again, the NUMP).
Page three of that schedule--following Firocoxib and just before
Glycopyrrolate--is the medication Furosemide.
To be clear, The Jockey Club does not take issue with the
principles of NUMP, which Mr. Patterson and many others
support. Rather, it is the wide differences in rule-making
processes among the states, coupled with local influences and
practices, that reaffirm the need to change. The system we have
relied upon to adopt NUMP (and other needed reforms)
throughout the land is broken and needs to change.
H.R. 3084, when thoughtfully examined, offers us the best
opportunity for meaningful reform.
The bill can be read at:

path through an opening quarter in :23.79, the gray improved to
second as 12-1 shot Grand Nene (Twirling Candy) hit the half in
:46.35. Two-wide turning for home, the homebred was hard
ridden by Luis Saez to take down the pacesetter in the stretch
and collared that leader for a two-length success. It was the
4000th career victory for seven-time Eclipse-winning
conditioner Todd Pletcher. The winner is a half to Rule (Roman

IMPROV (f, 4, Distorted Humor--One Caroline {MGSW,
$317,962}, by Unbridled's Song) began her career with a sharp,
closing second over this track and trip last January when let go
at 12-1 and finished fifth, beaten 16 3/4 lengths, after stumbling
at the start as the 8-5 favorite going a mile here Feb. 8. Boasting
a speedy string of works at Palm Meadows since, including a
best-of-47 half-mile in :48 flat two back Mar. 5, the gray was
hammered down to 3-2 favoritism for this cut back in trip.
Breaking smoothly, she made the lead without any urging in the
first furlong, receiving only light pressure from 17-1 outsider
Liberty Road (Quality Road) to her inside through a quarter-mile
in :22.61. The duel intensified between those two past a halfmile in :45.49, but Improv soon shook clear from that rival under
a hand ride nearing the turn for home. Cut loose by Julien
Leparoux at the top of the stretch, the homebred opened up
from there and easily staved off a mild challenge from 30-1
runner-up Tizabella (Tiznow) to score by 3 3/4 lengths on the
wire. Liberty Road finished third. The winner’s dam tallied five
wins in her seven career starts, including victories in the
GII Rampart S. and GIII Sabin S. over this track. This is her only
foal to make it to the races thus far, but she also has a yearling
filly by Speightstown and was bred to Bernardini this season.

the local strip and was given a 4-1 chance to get the job done in
this career bow. Saving ground in mid-pack early, the bay bided
her time as the leader ticked off early fractions of :23.66 and
:47.99. Tipped out four-wide while still well back at the top of
the lane, the homebred uncorked a powerful turn of foot to
swiftly inhale the field and score a head victory over If You Say

IT'S ELEMENTARY (f, 4, Afleet Alex--Mystery Itself {GSP,

Gulfstream Jan. 18, broke through with a three-length success in
a one-mile off-the-turfer there Feb. 5 for previous owner
Bradley Thoroughbreds and trainer Chad Brown. Privately
purchased by Travis and Eddie Racing Stable and transferred to
Tom Morley after RNA’ing for $19,000 at FTKFEB, the 8-5 chalk
was off a step slowly and trailed the field heading into the first
turn. Advancing up the rail to sit in a close sixth off modest early
fractions, the bay rallied four-wide on the backstretch to take on
the leader Forever Famous (Into Mischief) turning for home. It’s
Elementary fought her way past that rival in the final furlong to
win by 1 1/2 lengths and make it two-for-two on the dirt. The

Exclusively a turf horse prior to last summer, Savings Account
made an auspicious dirt debut last June at Monmouth, earning a
101 Beyer Speed Figure when finishing a game second in an
optional claiming event, and followed that up with an allowance
win in July when shipped cross-country to Del Mar. From there,
she was fed a steady diet of stakes races, never breaking
through, but running respectably each time, including a third to
champion Beholder (Henny Hughes) in the GI Zenyatta S. Third
again in a sloppy renewal of Remington’s She’s All in H. Dec. 13,
the 5-year-old entered off a runner-up effort in Tampa’s
Wayward Lass S. Jan. 23. Breaking as the second choice here,
Savings Account stalked the pace in the second flight along the
rail as the field moved along tightly packed down the backside.
After continuing to save ground in the pocket around the far
turn, she tipped into the two path spinning for home and was
set down to collar pacesetter Tiz Lately inside the eighth pole,
gradually edging clear to earn her first blacktype victory. The
winner’s dam, a full-sister to GISW Buddha, produced a colt by

ROYAL SAINT (c, 4, Candy Ride {Arg}--Royal Parade, by Saint

score at Ellis Park as a 2-year-old in August 2014, but was not
seen for just short of a year thereafter. Returning as the 8-5
favorite last August at Saratoga, the $100,000 Keeneland
September buy faded to fifth after dueling wide throughout. A
game second by a neck next out at Belmont Sep. 12, he once
again was put on the bench, this time for a little over six months,
resurfacing in this spot. Off as the 17-10 favorite, Royal Saint
was hustled out of the gate before being allowed to sit second
off the flank of 2-1 second choice Bumpy Cat (Portobello Road),
stalking that foe through a quarter in :22.36. Asked to pick it up
around the three-eighths pole, the dark bay locked horns with
the pacesetter throughout the stretch, drawing even and forging
in front nearing the sixteenth pole. With the longtime leader
battling back gamely, Royal Saint was kept to pressure to prevail
by a determined neck on the line. Lifetime Record: 4-2-1-0,

back into stakes company, she was a respectable fifth at nearly

after that, she returned Feb. 5 over this course and distance and
just missed, finishing second by a neck at 10-1 behind

INDUSTRY INFO
Evans First TCA Award of Merit Recipient:
John Evans has been named the first recipient of the
Thoroughbred Charities of America’s Award of Merit. Evans was
nominated for his work as farm manager at the Thoroughbred
Retirement Foundation’s Second Chance Farm at the Lowell
Correctional Institute in Ocala, Florida. He received his award in
front of 400 guests at the 54th annual Florida Thoroughbred
Breeders and Owners Association Gala event held in Ocala
Monday evening. Award recipients are nominated by the
leadership of various state Thoroughbred owners and breeders
associations and are presented at each state association’s
annual awards ceremonies.
“Last year, in celebration of our 25th anniversary, we named
nearly 20 Award of Merit recipients,” said Dan Rosenberg,
president of TCA. “The response to the award was tremendous
so our board decided to continue it again this year. There are so
many people working tirelessly on behalf of Thoroughbreds and
those who care for them in our industry and we feel it is
important to acknowledge their efforts. We are deeply
appreciative of John’s work at Second Chance Farm and are
thrilled that he is our first award recipient of the year.”

‘COSSACK’ DANCES TO
GOLD CUP VICTORY
CRITERION BROTHER AN EASTER STAR
by Kelsey Riley
Glenn Burrows has seen it all on both ends of transactions in
the bloodstock business, having spent 20 years working for Inglis
before opening Willow Park Stud 15 years ago, and Burrows
could well be in line for his biggest coup yet, when he offers a
Pierro (Aus) half-brother to four-time Group 1 winner Criterion
at the Inglis Easter sale as part of his nine-horse draft.
“There’s no doubt he’s going to be my sale topper,” said
Burrows of the dark bay colt. “The mare has been such a phenomenal
producer and she has one of the current champions around who
is going to stud this season and will be very keenly sought after.”
In addition to Criterion, who will attempt to defend his title in
the A$4 million G1 Queen Elizabeth S. on the second day of The
Championships Apr. 9, lot 399 is a half-brother to G2 QTC Cup
winner Varenna Miss (Aus) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) and listed
winner Silently (Aus) (Anabaa). Their dam is the now 17-year-old
Group 3 winner Mica’s Pride (Aus) (Bite The Bullet). Cont. p5
Joyous scenes in the winner’s enclosure
with Don Cossack and connections | Racing Post
by Emma Berry
Nine years after winning the Grand National in his first season
with a trainer’s licence, Gordon Elliott has added
steeplechasing’s blue riband to his list of achievements after
Don Cossack (Ger) (Sholokhov {Ire}) galloped his rivals into
submission in the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Prominent throughout, the 9-year-old favourite denied the
team of Willie Mullins, Ruby Walsh and Rich Ricci another
big-race success at this year’s Festival by taking a commanding
lead from the third-last fence and staying on strongly to leave
Djakadam (Fr) (Saint Des Saints {Fr}) trailing by four and a half
lengths, with another Mullins contender, Don Poli (Ire)
(Poliglote {GB}) a further 10 lengths back in third. The two
‘Dons’ are owned by Michael O’Leary’s Gigginstown House Stud,
which first tasted Gold Cup glory a decade ago with War Of
Attrition (Ire).
Winning jockey Bryan Cooper, 23, has had mixed fortunes at
Cheltenham over the years. He first rose to prominence in 2013
when posting three Festival victories, but a sickening fall at the
following year’s meeting in his first year as Gigginstown’s
retained jockey left his career hanging in the balance after he
broke two bones in his leg.

“I can't thank Michael and Eddie [O’Leary] enough,” said
Cooper, whose father Tom has trained two Cheltenham Festival
winners. “From the time I broke my leg here two years ago, they
have supported me all the way. Last year was hit and miss--I had
a couple that got away from us, but they really stuck by me.
That gave me plenty
of confidence. We're
a great team and this
was a great team
effort. Don Cossack
has beaten what's
been put in front of
him and that's all he
can do. He's the best
I've ever sat on.”

Elliott, who has
enjoyed three winners at Cheltenham this week, struggled to
find the words to describe his delight at landing such a major
prize for his biggest owner, Ryanair boss O’Leary, who
sponsored two Grade 1 contests on the Thursday of the Festival.
The trainer said, “That was brilliant, unbelievable, I can't
believe it. I can't thank Michael and Anita and Eddie and Wendy
enough, and all the team at Gigginstown--they supported me
from the start. I've never been so nervous in my life. I'm just so
happy for all of us, all the staff in the yard, my mother and
father.”
Dream Triumph for Joseph O’Brien...
The name on the licence may read Aidan O’Brien, but the
pre-eminent flat trainer of his generation makes no secret of the
fact that the man calling the shots at Piltown, the County
Kilkenny home of G1 JCB Triumph Hurdle winner Ivanovich
Gorbatov (Ire) (Montjeu
{Ire}), is his son Joseph,
who recently announced
his retirement from the
saddle.
At the age of just 22,
O’Brien junior already has
a formidable string of
riding successes to his
name--including 30 Group

victories--and his second
career, though yet to be
rubber-stamped with his own training licence from Horse Racing
Ireland, has got off the ground in the best possible fashion with
a debut Cheltenham Festival triumph.
SATURDAY, 19 MARCH 2016
Aidan O’Brien is of course no stranger to National Hunt racing,
and neither is his wife Annemarie, the couple each having held
the licence at the Piltown stable of Annemarie’s father Joe
Crowley and each becoming Ireland’s champion jumps trainer
during that time. After moving to Ballydoyle and switching
predominantly to the Flat, O’Brien still held Cheltenham in his
thrall for five seasons as conditioner of the treble Champion
Hurdler Istabraq (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells). And, just like the mighty
Istabraq, Ivanovich Gorbatov is a former flat performer who has
taken to hurdling with great aplomb in the colours of
Cheltenham’s winningmost owner JP McManus.
"I can't really put it into words to be honest," said Joseph from
the middle of a giant media huddle after his star juvenile hurdler
led home a trio of Willie-Mullins-trained horses. He added, "It
feels slightly surreal. It's completely different to being in the
saddle. When you're riding, you don't get a chance to take in the
whole occasion, but now I don't have much to do on the day
itself as the job is done, so there’s more time to get nervous.
Barry [Geraghty] was as confident as anyone. When he got off
him last time out, he said he hated the ground and couldn't
jump. We were in no doubt he would be better on better
ground and he was. He could be a Champion Hurdle horse--he's
entitled to go into that grade but it will be a huge step up.”
The youngster has around 70 horses under his care, a mixture
of flat and jumps horses, 15 to 20 of which are 2-year-olds, and
he hopes to be operating under his own licence by June.
Asked if he was daunted by following in the footsteps of his
father, he said, “I don’t think of it in those terms. I just want to
get each horse I have as fit and well as possible and to do the
best I can. For the last year I’ve struggled with my weight and I
knew I wasn’t going to be able to ride forever. I’m very lucky to
have ridden the horses I did.”
Pendleton Impresses But Carberry Wins Again...
Britain’s most decorated female Olympian, the former cycling
champion Victoria Pendleton, has been riding as an amateur
jump jockey this winter in the Betfair-sponsored ‘Switching
Saddles’ challenge and faced the biggest test of her equine
career at Cheltenham when lining up for the St James’s Place
Foxhunter Chase.
Positioned out the back of the 24-runner field for the first half
of the race, she gradually urged her mount Pacha Du Polder (Fr)
(Muhtathir {GB}) into a more forward position to finish strongly
for a running-on fifth place--a remarkable performance for a
rider of her inexperience. She was no match, however, for the
leading lady of the amateur scene, Nina Carberry, who recorded
back-to-back wins in the Foxhunter and her sixth overall at the
Cheltenham Festival aboard the JP McManus-owned On The
Fringe (Ire) (Exit To Nowhere). Cont. p3

Pendleton Impresses, But Carberry Wins Again Cont.
Pendleton, 35, who has been guided by the Oxfordshire-based
training duo of Alan and Lawney Hill, said, “This is right up there
with anything I've done. It's such a rush, such a thrill. I think it's
one of my greatest achievements. I feel lucky. To be accepted as
part of this, by the crowd and by the other jockeys today, I just
want to say a big thank you. I feel an immense sense of
achievement.”
Speaking of her new-found passion for riding, which she took
up just a year ago, Pendleton confirmed that she plans to
continue to compete in hunter chases and point-to-points. She
said, “I’ve loved every minute of it. I can’t believe how much I
enjoy riding out every morning. I can’t wait to get to the yard--I
love the smell of horses, everything about it. To be here riding at
Cheltenham on Gold Cup day is an unbelievable privilege.”
Paul Nicholls trains Pacha Du Polder, on whom Pendleton
secured her first victory in a hunter chase at Wincanton earlier
this month.
The champion trainer said, “She’s not won, but she’s ridden a
winner today in everyone’s eyes, and you saw the reaction from
the crowd, it’s what this sport is all about.”

CHANGE OF PLAN FOR INTILAAQ
Connections of runaway G3 Rose of Lancaster S. hero Intilaaq
(Dynaformer) have changed their minds over his target on Dubai
World Cup night and have chosen the G1 Dubai Turf over the
evening’s headline event, the G1 Dubai World Cup. Trainer
Roger Varian had recently taken the ‘TDN Rising Star’ for a
racecourse gallop at Southwell in
a bid to ready Hamdan Al
Maktoum’s colt for his first
competitive attempt on a dirt
surface and his absence from the
world’s richest race leaves Britain
without a representative.

FALLON BACK ON HOME SOIL
When Harry Met Harry...
Champion trainer Paul Nicholls posted a double on the day to
finish joint-second on three winners for the week to Willie
Mullins, and it was also a breakthrough day for two of his former
assistants.

trained, now has a Grade 1

The 8-year-old’s determined late run from the final flight was
enough to win the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle by a length
and quarter from Fagan (GB) (Fair Mix {Fr}).
Another former Nicholls employee, Dan Skelton, saddled
Superb Story (Ire) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}), ridden by his
brother Harry, to win his first Festival race, the G3 Vincent
O’Brien County Hurdle.
The Prestbury Cup, which pitches English-trained runners
against their Irish counterparts, finished honours even at 14
winners apiece.
The latest development in the career of former champion
jockey Kieren Fallon sees the rider return to his native Ireland to
team up with The Curragh trainer Michael O’Callaghan. Fallon
has been based mostly in America for the last 18 months,
though he did ride 10 winners in Britain in 2015. Pending some
paperwork approvals, 51-year-old Fallon is hoping to be in the
saddle for O’Callaghan at the opening day of the Irish flat season
at The Curragh Sunday.
Commenting on the link up Michael O’Callaghan said, “Kieren
is one of the world’s most accomplished jockeys. He has been
British champion six times and has won big races all over the
world. I am thrilled that he has agreed to join our team. I’m sure
the Irish racing public will also be excited to see such a star in
action. Some of our owners, including Qatar Racing, retain their
own jockeys but hopefully Kieren will be available to ride many
of the others.”
O’Callaghan continued, “He rode his first morning for us on
Wednesday and it was just brilliant to see him in action, not just
with the young horses, but with the young jockeys as they look
up too him.”
Fallon himself said, “Irish racing is up there with the best in the
world and, even while I was in America, I have been following
the scene here. Michael is a trainer going places and I jumped at
the opportunity to get involved with his yard. He has a super
set-up here on The Curragh, a smashing group of horses and
excellent staff. This is a good move for me.”

The colt was bred by Criterion’s owner/breeder Sir Owen

Criterion Brother an Easter Star Cont.
Glenn, who bought Mica’s Pride for A$300,000 in foal to Reset
(Aus) at Inglis’s Australian Broodmare sale in 2009 and bred her
to Sebring to produce Criterion the following year, began
boarding his growing broodmare band at Willow Park, north of
Scone in the Hunter Valley, about a year ago. Burrows noted
Glenn’s broodmare band currently sits at 15, but he said Glenn
is stocking up on quality mares to breed to Criterion when he
retires to nearby Newgate Farm later this year.
“He’s building up his broodmare band particularly buying
mares for Criterion, who he basically treats like his son, he’s so
proud of him,” Burrows explained. “Criterion is going to go to
stud at Newgate, but not a hair out of the horse’s tail was sold;
[Glenn] couldn’t bear to part with any of him so he’s standing by
arrangement at Newgate.”
Burrows noted that Mica’s Pride’s Pierro colt is being offered
as a means to keep Glenn’s Thoroughbred investments
profitable.
“This whole thing is
getting bigger now
with his investment
into really decent
quality broodmares
and he just wants to
make it all pay for
itself,” Burrows said.
“As a consequence,

the ground, I think
he’ll find it hard to part with a large number of them so he’ll
probably be racing quite a few of them. To make it a profitable
business, every now and again you have to sell some of your
top-end stock.”
Glenn will also offer lot 128, a Pierro filly out of stakes winner
Upon This Rock (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), through Willow Park
at Easter. Upon This Rock is a daughter of Joleur (Aus) (Bite The
Bullet), a full-sister to Mica’s Pride. Glenn bought the now
8-year-old Upon This Rock off the track, and she coincidentally
was a Willow Park graduate, having cost agent James Bester
A$225,000 as a yearling. Upon This Rock is now back at Willow
Park as part of the Glenn broodmare band and her dam, Joleur,
still resides at the stud and is paddock mates with Mica’s Pride.
“Mica’s Pride and Joleur are two older girls who need a bit of
special attention and so they’re in a paddock together, the two
sisters, and they’re owned by completely different entities--it’s
purely coincidental,” Burrows said. Of the Pierro filly, he added,
“This filly is a spectacular first foal. She oozes class and the mare
has a really nice Sebring filly and is back in foal to Lonhro. I think
that filly will create a whole lot of interest as well.”
SATURDAY, 19 MARCH 2016
Burrows pointed to lot 440, a colt by Pierro’s sire Lonhro (Aus),
as another standout of his draft. He is the fourth foal out of the
stakes-winning Noesis (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), whose
Street Cry (Ire) colt was bought by agent George Moore for
A$1 million at Easter last year. Sun Bloodstock bought a
full-brother to this colt for A$520,000 at the 2014 Magic Millions
Gold Coast sale. Now named Art Of Perception (Aus), he is in
training with David Hayes.
“He’s an absolutely stunning individual,” Burrows said of lot
440. “And the cross has been successful already with Lonhro out
of Exceed and Excel
mares, something

work with David
Hayes and he’s got a very big rap on him, and the 2-year-old colt
we sold at the sale last year by Street Cry, and he made A$1
million. This colt is every bit as good as them conformation-wise;
he’s got a real presence about him. He’s dark in colour, no
white, a real eye-catching kind of guy.”
Willow Park will also offer a New Zealand-bred colt from the
second crop of Sepoy (Aus) (lot 352). He is the first foal out of
Irish Blues (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}), a full-sister to G1 Australian
Derby and G1 Australian Guineas winner Shamrocker (NZ)
(O’Reilly {NZ}) and Group 2 winner Bohemian Lily (NZ) (O’Reilly
{NZ}), and a half to G1 Auckland Cup winner Rock Diva (NZ)
(Lucky Unicorn {Aus}). “He’s a mature, powerful, early running
type,” Burrows said.
Should the aforementioned youngsters fulfill their potential on
the racetracks, they would not be the first high-class graduates
of Willow Park. Burrows planned the mating for and raised and
sold dual Group 1 winner Samantha Miss (Aus) (Redoute’s
Choice {Aus}), who is the farm’s most expensive yearling
graduate to date at A$1.5 million. Burrows also planned the
mating on and sold dual Group 1 winner Cosmic Endeavour
(Aus) (Northern Meteor {Aus}) and G1 Railway S. winner
Bounding (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}). Cont. p7

It was announced Thursday that Bounding–who represents the
previously mentioned Lonhro/Exceed and Excel cross--would be
offered again through Willow Park at this year’s Magic Millions
National Broodmare Sale in June, and Burrows said, “She’s just a
beautiful mare, she was a standout from the time she was a foal.
There’s much more American interest in our horses now than ever
before, and with the currency exchange Americans are essentially
getting a 30% discount on a mare like this. To get something of
that quality, by the time you turn it into U.S. dollars it’s not so
bad compared to what you’re going to pay in America.”
Burrows, who spent 20 years managing the bloodstock
department at Inglis, also serves as an independent bloodstock
advisor for farm and outside clients. He left Inglis to start Willow
Park Stud in 2001. The farm is 600 acres--boutique by Australian
standards--and is home to around 60 broodmares, with the
team taking pride in the individual care that can be offered to
each horse. With such attention to detail being put into each
graduate, it would not come as a surprise to see Willow Park’s
Group 1 honour role continue to grow.
HEALTHY CLEARANCE RATE AT INGLIS
The single session Inglis March Thoroughbred Sale in
Melbourne Friday finished up with a healthy 93% clearance rate,
up 3% from last year, with 172 of the 185 lots offered finding
new homes. Aggregate for the day amounted to A$1,327,850
with the average running at A$7,720 and the median at
A$3,000.
“We are delighted to have enabled the trade of so many
quality breeding and racing prospects today, and to have
achieved a good clearance rate for our clients,” said Inglis
Victorian Manager Simon Vivian. “We are privileged to have sold
some horses that are currently in training and some that have
been successful in the weeks leading up to the sale. These
results have helped the healthy turnout at Oaklands today.”
Shane Morrissy went to A$78,000 for the sale’s top lot, Group
1 placed Vilanova (NZ) (Commands {Aus}), catalogued as lot
205. The multiple stakes winner of nearly A$600,000 was
popular among bidders from all quarters of the auditorium
before Morrissy put his hand up for the winning bid. The top
price achieved for a broodmare on the day was A$40,000 and
there were two that reached that mark, one being lot 162 ,
Flamingo Dancer (Aus) (Don Eduardo {NZ}). Offered by
Cloverhill Farm, the mare is carrying an early service to exciting
young sire All Too Hard (Aus) (Casino Prince {Aus}) and was
knocked down to Inglis as agent. The other, Native Land (Aus)
(War Pass), lot 61 a 5-year-old winner, as recently as two days
previously, was secured by Heritage Bloodstock.

FORJATT (IRE) (g, 8, Iffraaj {GB}--Graceful Air {Ire}, by Danzero
{Aus}), winner of the G3 Jebel Ali Mile last January, rattled off
three victories early this season, taking two Abu Dhabi turf
affairs Nov. 15 and Dec. 6, respectively, before adding a win
going a mile over the dirt strip here Jan. 8. Second in this year’s
edition of the Jebel Ali Mile Jan. 22, the veteran 8-year-old
completed the trifecta in the Listed HH The President Cup back
over the Abu Dhabi lawn on Valentine’s Day. Only fifth when
switched to the grass at Meydan in the G2 Zabeel Mile to Safety
Check (Ire) (Dubawi) Feb. 25, the bay was held up during the
first three-quarters of a mile trying this distance for the first
time Friday. Let loose shortly thereafter, Forjatt got the job done
to score by a neck on the line over Los Barbados (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}). “This horse is just so genuine,” commented pilot Chris
Hayes. “He makes matters harder for himself as he is always
keen early on but, in regards to that, he has been getting better
throughout the season. I never had any doubts this extra 200
metres would suit him and it is just a case of not hitting the front
too soon as he has a habit of thinking he has done enough once
in front. After a couple of smacks I have just been able to push
him out under hands and heels and he has won snugly.” Sales

SATURDAY, 19 MARCH 2016
The HKJC had jumped into the fray just eight hips into the
2015 Easter sale, going to A$700,000 for an Arrowfield Studconsigned son of their sire Manhattan Rain (Aus) from La Bamba
(Aus) (Last Tycoon {Ire}). The colt’s pedigree had received a
major update just weeks before when his half-brother Wandjina
(Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) took out the G1 Australian Guineas. The
lone 2-year-old offering at Friday’s HKIS and still an entire, lot 19
proved the evening’s second-dearest lot when knocked down to
owner Boniface Ho Ka Kui--who has horses with trainers Caspar
Fownes and John Size--for HK$7 million. In addition to Wandjina,
the colt is a close relative of G1 Hong Kong Sprint upsetter
Inspiration (Aus) (Flying Spur {Aus}) and to the dam of local
Group 2 winner Admiration (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}).
Almost a year to the day that Got Fly (Fr) (Early March {GB})
was beaten 3/4 of a length into second in the Hong Kong Derby,
that gelding’s owner Marces Lee Tze Bun was adding to his
portfolio when signing for the night’s second offering, a gelding
by Choisir (Aus), for HK$6.8 million. Lot 2, an A$220,000
acquisition from the 2014 Easter sale, is by the sire of 2015
Hong Kong Derby hero Luger (Aus) and was produced by a halfsister to G3 Millie Fox S. winner November Flight (Aus) (Flying
Spur {Aus}), herself the dam of GSW & G1SP Ashokan (Aus)
(More Than Ready). This is also the extended family of G1 Hong
Kong Sprint winner Natural Blitz (Aus) (Maroof).
Each of the 24 lots, acquired at auction houses from around
the world, was sold without reserve. The turnover for the sale
was HK$100.5 million (£9,070,397/€11,618,497/
US$13,051,948/A$17,208,904), while the average price of
HK$4,185,500 (£377,933/€484,104/A$709,810/US$543,841)
represented a 5.9% increase over 2015.
After being conducted in previous year during the morning
hours of Saturday, officials at the Hong Kong Jockey Club took
the decision to stage the HKIS on a Friday evening for the first
time and by all accounts, the idea was well-received. Cont. p9

“In terms of the event tonight, this represents everything that
the Hong Kong Jockey Club aspires to for its owners,” said
Anthony Kelly, executive director of racing business and
operations for the HKJC. “We want to give them an elegant
experience and create an occasion that enhances their
enjoyment of racehorse ownership. Ownership is a journey and
this event tonight is the start of that journey. People have
dreams, and the reason the Starcraft gelding sold for as much as
it did tonight is because people want to follow that dream; the
dream that their horse might be the next Able Friend, that’s
what drives this sport, it drives the ownership experience. That
is why this event was such a success tonight and it is something
we will try to replicate next year.”
