If you are a sports enthusiast and have a passion for writing, you may
consider a career as a sports journalist. You can put your love of sports to
work for you. If you love sports, you're already halfway there--all you need now
is some training. Follow these steps to become a sports journalist.

Be passionate about sports. If you want to make sports journalism your career,
you have to really like what you'll be writing about. Knowing a lot about sports can
only help you because when you write about sports, you will need to know about sports
history as well as current sporting events.

Read sports-related articles. Familiarize yourself with the way a sports journalist
writes. Study your favorite sports journalists to see why they might have become
so successful.

Write. Practice writing your own sports articles, but also focus on writing, period. If
you want to be a sports journalist, you'll have to be a good writer. And to become
a good writer, you'll have to write about more than just sports.

Get an education.
First, you will need to complete high school. Take as many advanced English
classes as you can.
You will need a Bachelor's degree to pursue a career in sports journalist. Go to
a 4-year college and major in English, with a concentration in Journalism.
Consider getting graduate degree. This will make you more desirable to
potential employers. Note that it may be easier to work on your graduate
degree once you have gotten your first job.

Join your school or college newspaper. Even if you have a degree, it will be
easier to find a job out of college if you have some experience. Write for your
school newspaper in any capacity that you can, but try to become your college
newspaper's sports journalist.

Become an intern. Apply for an internship at your local newspaper or news
station. Try to get the internship in the sports department so you can get exactly
the kind of experience you need.

Apply for an entry-level job. If you interned at a specific newspaper, apply there
first because they will be more likely to hire an intern they've worked with than

Consider freelancing. If you're having difficulty finding a full-time, regular job, try
your hand at freelance writing. Send queries to sports magazines and newspapers
that you know of. If they like your query, they will hire you to write the article, and if they
like your article, they may hire you on a contract basis or even full time.

Journalist Training Programs. Journalist training typically means earning a
Bachelor of Arts degree in communication or journalism with courses in mass
media, advanced writing, news reporting, public speaking, and political
communications.
