Creating a Community
Without Violence
2007 Synergy Services Annual Report
“If you don’t like the way the world is, you
change it. You have an obligation to change
it. You just do it one step at a time.”
-Marian Wright Edelman,
Children’s Defense Fund
Dear Friends,
On any given day
in 2007, you could
have visited Synergy
Services and taken
a snapshot of a
frightening world
defined by violence,
pain and fear.
Throughout the year, Synergy Services touched
the lives of over 40,000 people helping thousands
of men, women and children overcome the every
day challenges of cruelty, family violence, bullying,
homelessness and abuse.
However, on any given day in 2007, if you
actually did visit Synergy Services you would
also find a world defined by kindness, caring,
hope, and a real belief that the world can be
changed one step at a time. You would find
positive people of all ages healing, sharing, and
working together to change their own lives and
the lives of those around them. You would find
Synergy’s 150 dedicated staff members who every
day dry tears, hold hands, provide good food,
attractive surroundings, new clothing, art, play,
and dance therapy, counseling, education, music,
field trips, and a new beginning for men, women
and children throughout our community.
In 2007, Synergy’s outcomes reflected positive
changes for clients across every one of the
agencies’ programs with regard to levels of
depression, sense of safety, family cohesion and
adaptability, child development and parenting,
stability and ability to access resources. Outcome
measurements, and probably more importantly,
shared experience demonstrated time and time
again how Synergy helped change lives and
rebuild futures.
During the year, we also launched a capital
campaign to build a new Homeless Youth
Campus. We found 5 beautiful tree-lined acres
north of the river on a bus line just 10 minutes
from downtown Kansas City to locate the campus.
In 2007 alone, more than $6 million dollars was
Every Day Challenges
If you visited Synergy on October 14, 2007, these
are just a few of the people you would have met:
■ If you stopped in at SafeHaven, Synergy’s
Domestic Violence Shelter, you would have
met Paula, a thirty-four year old mother and
her two tiny little girls. They would have just
arrived in the middle of the night…frightened,
bruised and battered, fearful that their
abusive husband and father would somehow
find them.
■ You could have then gone next door to the
Children’s Center to find a Synergy staff
member rocking Tyrone, a cuddly two-yearold taken away from his crack-addicted
mother who just kept forgetting to feed him.
■ You then could have driven a few miles south
to Synergy House to meet Jessica, a fifteen
year old with a heart tattoo on her wrist,
eating breakfast with the other kids. When
she could no longer stand her stepfather’s
sexual abuse, Jessica walked four miles to
a QuikTrip where she utilized the SafePlace
program to call Synergy’s hotline.
■ If you are still up to it, you could continue
driving across town to a middle school in
the Blue Valley District where you would find
Kevin, a cute sixth-grader. Kevin had stopped
coming to school because kids constantly
bullied him. After participating in Synergy’s
STOP Violence bullying prevention sessions he
is back in school and equipped with strategies
to overcome bullying.
pledged—including 2 million from national
sources—to benefit Kansas City’s homeless
and abused adolescents. We worked with 360
Architecture, Jeffrey Byrnes & Associates, and our
wonderful campaign steering committee to lay
the groundwork for a new shelter and a youth
resource center that will change the world for our
community’s most vulnerable and at-risk young
people.
We expanded our collaboration with other
agencies, the police, social service, probation
and parole, hospitals, and the prison system. We
continued our leadership of a variety of coalitions
and associations on the local, regional, state and
national levels. We escalated our research on
battering and child abuse and worked hard to
provide state-of-the-art services that wrapped
around our clients and provided both violence
prevention and intervention.
We could not have done any of this without the
support and generosity of individual donors,
public and private foundations, supportive
businesses, government funding, and hundreds
of caring volunteers. We could not have done
it without the hard work and leadership of our
dedicated board of directors and capital campaign
steering committee. We could not have done
it without the sponsors and participants in our
“Kindest Kansas Citian Awards Dinner” or
the ongoing support of Zona Rosa who chose
Synergy Services as their special organization and
introduced “Stand-Up for Synergy”, an annual
comedy benefit that quickly put the “fun” in
fundraising. And most certainly, WE COULD
NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU!
So we thank you for caring, for giving, for joining
forces with Synergy Services to change the world
one step – one person – one day at a time.
Fondly,
Robin Shanberg Winner
Executive Director
Synergy: The interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their
combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual efforts.
That’s one definition for the word synergy.
But to me, Synergy means so much more. Over the
years as I have become more familiar and more
involved, Synergy Services, Inc. has become a very
important part of my life. So much so that almost
anyone who knows me knows that my passion is
Synergy.
I first became aware of Synergy when I started as
manager of the Tremont Hen House and we sent
any excess Russell Stover candy to the agency’s
shelters. Then Phil Witt, who was a board member
at the time, asked if I would consider being on the
board. At first, I was hesitant because I wasn’t
sure how I could help. But as I realized that this
organization was made up of so many parts, it was
easy to find just the right position for me.
My first assignment, once I joined the board,
was to chair the Fund Development Committee.
Getting the community involved in making money
was so much fun. We had cook-outs, Mardi Gras
parties, Harley-Davidson events, golf tournaments
and so much more. While the constant need to
raise money can be overwhelming, we were
motivated by the terrifying yet inspiring stories
of those suffering from domestic violence, no safe
place to live, no funds, and many more extremely
difficult situations that happen in every day life.
Now Synergy has taken on the task of creating
a new safe place for homeless youth. Synergy’s
homeless youth campus will provide shelter as
well as a learning and counseling center. It is so
exciting to look into the future and see the center
as it will be. However, it will take a lot of effort
and good will to achieve the ultimate goal.
This organization, this Synergy, is a result of
ordinary people just trying to help other people. I
consider it an honor to be part of such a group and
the work we are doing to reach out and be there
for those who need us.
Sincerely,
Andy Staley

HIGHLIGHTS
Women’s Center Helps Domestic Violence Survivors
take First Steps toward Independence
The year 2007 marked the tenth anniversary of the merger that brought SafeHaven together with
Synergy House to create Synergy Services Inc. What began as a domestic violence shelter is now
a full-fledged women’s center with all the services a woman needs to find her footing as she steps
into a new life.
Shelter is still the primary need for our domestic violence clients, and we are proud to continue
the tradition of high quality residential services at SafeHaven. Highlighting 2007, our desire
to balance the need for safe housing with preparing our clients to live independently led us to
progressively examine all the rules that typically govern shelters and relax or eliminate those not
directly related to safety. Women leaving abusive relationships have grown accustomed to the
ultra controlling environment their abuser created, and benefit from and appreciate the freedom
they now find at our Women’s Center.
Also taking hold in 2007 was a team approach to treatment. Each client now has a dedicated case
manager, therapist and advocate, which increases the expertise available and provides a higher
level of service coordination. Through weekly meetings, the treatment team evaluates a family’s
evolving needs and plans individualized treatment and care.
The desire to provide high quality client services that motivated the
merger ten years ago remains at the
heart of all we do today.

Children Make Strides toward Healing
through Art & Play
The physical injuries caused by violence may be the most visible of its
consequences, but the emotional damage is often more insidious and harder to
heal. Children traumatized by abuse, neglect, or observing violence need a way to
understand and share their thoughts and emotions in order to fully heal from the
trauma.
Our therapists help children move beyond the limits of vocabulary
to express themselves through art and play. Art and play therapy
sessions provide a relaxed and interactive environment for children
to deal with complex issues. Children participating in the sessions
often say that it “feels better” than traditional forms of therapy
they have experienced.
Since healthy attachments are at the core of a child’s ability to
form healthy relationships, the past year was characterized by
increased use of theraplay, an interactive therapy process which
involves the caregiver and equips them with age-appropriate
techniques they can use to foster a bond with the child.
Having the clinical expertise to counsel
both adults and children is central to the
synergistic way we serve families.

Therapeutic Intervention Sets Batterers on the
Right Path
Behavior is learned, and batterers often lack the knowledge and skills necessary to understand
and change their behavior. Our Batterers Intervention program equips participants, generally
court-mandated as a result of a domestic violence offense, with the tools they need to stop abusive
behavior.
The program, which began eight years ago with five participants, has grown steadily
with significant increases over the past few years to make it the largest program in
the city. In 2007, an average of 90 men participated in sessions each week. The size of
our program is not the only thing that sets it apart. While most similar programs are
short-term and educationally focused, our program is a minimum of 26 weeks and is
designed to move beyond cognitive understanding to focus on behavior change.
Community collaborations continue to play an important role in the success of our
efforts. During the year, we expanded our relationships with law enforcement, judges,
and probation and parole officers. With a coordinated community effort, we are better
able to hold batterers accountable for their behavior and more effectively identify and
dissuade destructive thought patterns which enable the batterer to feel justified in his
abusive behavior.
Changing a batterer’s outlook has positive outcomes
for the entire community.

Anti-bullying Efforts are a Critical Step in
Preventing Violence
Bullying is a serious problem with social, academic and psychological consequences that impact
the entire community. The low self-esteem, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder which
victims often experience can lead to violent retaliation or even suicide. Additionally, bullies often
engage in other anti-social behaviors such as vandalism, shoplifting, truancy and substance abuse.
We have also found a direct link between childhood bullies and adult batterers.
As an agency focused not only on treating the effects of abuse and violence, but also preventing
them, Synergy addresses this critical situation through our STOP Violence programs. The
programs utilize curricula customized for age and gender to teach empathy and respect and
introduce youth to proven strategies that prevent and overcome bullying behavior.
The year brought some exciting developments for our STOP Violence programs. STEP Up, our
anti-bullying program for adolescent girls, gained use internationally as a violence prevention
tool. Our interactive life-skills program, Power Thru Choices, added a session focused on
teen dating violence for parents and teachers in an effort to provide a comprehensive
approach to the epidemic.
In all, we reached more than 17,000 students, over 800 parents and nearly 1,800
teachers with our programs. Broadening our impact, we presented at state and
national conferences and partnered with the Center for Safe Schools to sponsor
a conference on the issue of adolescent violence, which drew more than 125
educators, criminal justice officials and social workers from around the state.
Preventing violence starts with
educating our children about how to be
empathetic and respectful.
