The Mountain Hawks fell to Bucknell on Wednesday in Lewisburg in a game in which they scored only 15 first half points on 17-percent shooting and allowed the Bison to connect on ten three-pointers. Zahir Carrington registered yet another double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Marquis Hall (11) and Rob Keefer (10) joined him in double figures. Holy Cross enters today’s contest fresh off a two-point win over Colgate on Wednesday in Hamilton. The Crusaders have already locked up the number-two seed for the upcoming Patriot League Tournament and will host an opening round game on Wednesday. Goodman ‘48 Head Men’s Baketball Coach at Lehigh University. In his first-ever season as a collegiate head coach, Reed led the Mountain Hawks to the third most wins for a first-year head man in the 107-season history of Lehigh Basketball. Despite leading a team that had lost over 3,000 points from the previous year and consisted of 10 of 14 players in their freshmen or sophomore years, Reed guided the Brown and White to more wins than the previous season and the second most victories in the near 30-year history of Stabler Arena. Reed has been at Lehigh since the 2002-03 season, serving as the associate head coach for the 2006-07 campaign. Reed also has enjoyed stops at High Point University (N.C.) , North Carolina-Greensboro and Oakland Community College (Mich.). IF LEHIGH WINS... - Lehigh will snap a 12-game losing streak versus Holy Cross at the Hart Center. - The Mountain Hawks will remain alive to host a first round game in next week’s Patriot League Tournament. - Lehigh will defeat Holy Cross in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. Holy Cross has won 12 straight meetings here in Worcester and took this season’s earlier matchup in Bethlehem. LAST MEETING BETHLEHEM, Pa. (1/31/09) - Down five with just over six minutes to go, Lehigh’s offense went cold and scored only seven more points the rest of the way as the Mountain Hawks fell to Holy Cross 67-52 at Stabler Arena. Marquis Hall scored a team-high 14 points for Lehigh but he was the only Mountain Hawk in double figures, while Holy Cross placed three players in double digits, led by Eric Meister and R.J. Evans with 15 points apiece. Andrew Keister added 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists. DOUBLE-FIGURE MACHINE Zahir Carrington has registered double figure marks in either points or rebounds in each of his last 17 games. During that time the Philadelphia native has notched eight doubledoubles. Carrington has failed to reach the double figure plateau in either points or rebounds in just two games this entire season (Albany, Monmouth). D-FENSE! The Mountain Hawks currently lead the Patriot League and rank 11th nationally in field goal percentage defense (.387). Lehigh has held 14 opponents below 40-percent shooting and 11 opponents below 30-percent from three-point range. HALL’S HOTTER ON THE ROAD Marquis Hall is averaging 15.7 points per game on the road this season, having scored 20 or more points in four of 13 contests. In 14 home games however, he is averaging only 12.9 points, with just two games of 20+ points. TALL ORDER Lehigh looks to snap a 12-game losing streak versus Holy Cross at the Hart Center this afternoon. The Mountain Hawks last win over the Crusaders in this building was a 70-69 victory on February 11, 1998. Since then Lehigh has averaged 53 points per game with a high of only 67 in the 1999 meeting. The last time Lehigh won here Justin Maneri was eight years old and the number-one song in America was Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On. OFFENSE STUCK IN NEUTRAL LAST TIME OUT LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lehigh had one of those nights on Wednesday as the Mountain Hawks offense seemed to be stuck in neutral and they fell to the Bucknell Bison 72-51 at Sojka Pavilion. With the loss Lehigh fell to 15-12 overall and 5-8 in the Patriot League, while the Bison upped their record to 7-21 overall and 4-9 in league action. Three Lehigh players hit for double figures led by Zahir Carrington with 15 points, while Marquis Hall added 11 and Rob Keefer scored 10. Patrick Behan netted a game-high 23 points for the Bison as he connected on 10-of-16 shots. Lehigh scored a season-low 15 points in the first half on only 17-percent shooting as Bucknell opened up a 31-15 lead at intermission. The home team sank fiveof-seven three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes and Behan netted 12 points. The Mountain Hawks are averaing 61.5 points per game this month on 38-percent shooting. During that time Lehigh has scored more than 70 points in only two of its six games. THE MAGIC NUMBER Lehigh always likes to play tough, hard-nosed defense and the numbers prove that when the Mountain Hawks do, they are successful. Under Brett Reed, Lehigh is 20-1 when holding opponents to fewer than 60 points. The lone loss came earlier this season in Hamilton versus Colgate. LOOKING TO REVERSE THE TREND Lehigh defeated Holy Cross last year in the season finale at Stabler Arena. It marked the first time since the 2001-02 season that the Mountain Hawks won their season finale. The last time Lehigh won back-to-back regular season finales was the 1971-72 and 1972-73 seasons. HOME, SWEET STABLER Since the start of the 2002-03 season, Lehigh has been nothing short of dominant at home. Here is a look at the Mountain Hawks success at the STAR during that time. Overall Record: 70-26 (72.9%) Non-League Record: 36-11 (76.6%) Patriot League Record: 34-15 (69.4%) Longest Winning Streak: 16 games (11/25/03 - 12/6/04) FOUR SCORES TEN POINTS OR MORE Lehigh has placed four players in double figures six times this season, two more than all of last season. The Mountain Hawks are 4-2 in those contests. HALFWAY THERE Under Brett Reed, the Mountain Hawks are 20-4 when leading at the break, and just 9-19 when trailing at intermission. WORKING EXTRA With its loss at Army on February 14, Lehigh has now lost four straight overtime games. The Mountain Hawks last win in OT came on February 14, 2007 at Colgate (56-53). HALL JOINS 1,000-POINT CLUB Marquis Hall became the 27th member of Lehigh’s 1,000-point club in the victory over archrival Lafayette. The junior from Oregon drilled a three-pointer at the 14:55 mark of the opening half, which game him 1,001 career tallies. DOUBLE-DOUBLE TIMES TWO DID YOU KNOW? - Dave Buchberger was a member of Athletes in Action international touring team during the summer of 2008. The team traveled to Bulgaria and the Czech Republic for 16 days. - Zahir Carrington mentors middle to high school-aged boys in Allentown’s “Boys to Manhood” Program. - Michael Ojo played at the same high school, Crossroads School (Calif.), that produced current NBA players Baron Davis and Austin Croshere. - David Safstrom played at the same high school, Everett (Wash.), that produced former First-Team All-Patriot League performer Zo Savovic ‘03. - Matt Shamis was a high school teammate of current Duke standout Jon Scheyer at Glenbrook North High School in Illinois. That duo helped lead Glenbrook to 24 consecutive wins and a state championship during their junior season. In the win over Longwood, Zahir Carrington and Phil Anderson both posted double-doubles, marking the first time that has happened at Lehigh since December 7, 1998. That day Dan Handerhan (32 points, 10 rebounds) and Jared Hess (14 points, 10 rebounds) helped lead the Brown and White over Drew, 91 to 67 at Stabler Arena. NON-LEAGUE SUCCESS Lehigh’s ten non-league wins this season are its most since the inception of Patriot League play in 1990. The Mountain Hawks five non-league road victories are also the most in a single season in that same span. TEN ONCE AGAIN With its win over Columbia, Lehigh clinched its seventh straight season of double digit victories. That is the longest stretch of consecutive seasons with ten or more wins since the 1984-85 season through the 1991-92 campaign (eight straight). Plays at home: ....................................8-6 Plays on the road: ...............................7-6 Plays at neutral sites: .........................0-0 SIMPLE STUFF The recipe for winning on the road this season has been fairly easy: shoot a higher percentage than the opponent. The Mountain Hawks have shot a higher percentage than their opponents in six road games and have won all six. In road games in which they have shot a lower percentage, their record falls to 1-6. FREE THROW WOES Lehigh has struggled mightily from the free throw line in its last three games. During that time the Mountain Hawks have hit on only 32-of-64 attempts (50.0%). Lehigh’s 41.7-percent showing vs. Colgate last week is a season low and the Mountain Hawks lowest percentage since shooting 33-percent at Penn State last season. SLOW STARTS In their last two games the Mountain Hawks have gotten off to slow starts. Versus Lafayette Lehigh trailed 6-0 in the early going and did not score its first point until nearly four minutes had elapsed, while on Wednesday at Bucknell, the Mountain Hawks trailed 17-8 at the under12 media timeout. TURNING TO’S INTO POINTS The Mountain Hawks have outscored their opponents 42-23 in points off turnovers during the last three games. That includes a 15-3 advantage in the win over Colgate, Lehigh’s largest margin since league play began. MAN OF STEAL Marquis Hall is fourth in the Patriot League in steals, at 1.67 per contest. Hall has registered two or more steals in 13 games, including a career-high tying four in the win over Colgate. Hall enters today’s game with 133 career thefts.
