CROSSROADS FALL 2014 HOLY CROSS HIGH SCHOOL LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends of Holy Cross, CROSSROADS GOLF 3 2014 GRADUATION 5 SERVICE SPOTLIGHT 6 ALUMNI SERVICE SPOTLIGHT 7 HIGHLIGHTS 8 HOCKEY REUNION 10 CLASS REUNION 11 CLASS NOTES 13 6 Blessed Father Basil Moreau, the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, called educators in his schools to instruct students in religion and form them in the practices of Christian life, so that they might persevere in virtue after they graduate. His admonition to our community is realized in the lives of service to others by so many of the alumni of this school. As we celebrate 60 years since our opening in 1955, the school has remained true to its mission to educate the hearts and minds of young men to be useful citizens for society and men of faith and virtue. Our service learning program that was instituted by Michael Genovese 40 years ago continues to grow and flourish. This program teaches our students how to put virtue into practice. Many of our graduates tell me that their future career plans were influenced by their experiences in the service learning program. In this issue of Crossroads, we look at our service learning program today and the impact it has had on one alumnus. This August, the Holy Cross Community was saddened by the death of our beloved Brother Ralph Edmiston, C.S.C. Brother Ralph served at Holy Cross for over 25 years. Brother was a kind man whose simple faith impacted others in profound ways. He was as dedicated to the vision of our founder and the mission of Catholic education as any one I have ever known. He started the Walkathon in 1998 so that the school could go forward with needed new projects. He was tireless in his efforts, especially in contacting members of the local community to support the school. In soliciting financial support for the school, however, he ministered to countless members of the Queens community with his gentle and loving concern. The Walkathon has been named in his honor. I miss him every day. As we begin our 60th academic year, I ask for your prayers and support. With the hope of people of faith, this community meets every challenge and with the support of so many, we continue to grow. 9 Crossroads, the newsletter for Holy Cross High School alumni, parents and friends, is a publication of the Office of Institutional Advancement. 26-20 Francis Lewis Blvd., Flushing, NY 11358-1197 Main Office: Tel: (718) 886-7250 Fax: (718) 886-7257 Design: Peapod Design, New Canaan, CT With every best wish and prayer for you and those you love, I remain, Sincerely in Holy Cross, Father Walter E. Jenkins, C.S.C., Ed.D. President GOLF T he 2014 Holy Cross Golf Outing was a rousing success. With perfect weather on June 23rd, our alumni, friends, and supporters gathered together at Engineer’s Country Club and North Shore Country Club to play eighteen holes. Following the round of golf, Engineer’s hosted a beautiful cocktail hour and an elegant dinner, in which our guests bid on great prizes in our Chinese, Silent, and Live Auctions. At the event, Holy Cross honored prestigious alumnus Mike Hebron ’60, a renowned golf teacher and PGA Master Professional, who was inducted into the PGA Golf Professional Hall of Fame in 2013. Under the leadership of Frank Korzekwinski ’80, Chair, and with the help all of those who volunteered their time to the Golf Committee this year, the event grossed over $183,000 and netted just over $101,000 for the Alumni Scholarship Fund. James King ’96 hit a Hole-in-One on a par 3 at North Shore Country Club. Two of our Varsity Golfers, Sean San Antonio and Freddy Schuler were set up at a “Beat the Student Hole” at each course. Sean, pictured above, gave the golfers a run for their money when they purchased raffle tickets to win a free foursome at the course. PG . 6 SERVICE SPOTLIGHT T he Service Learning Program is kicking off the 2014-2015 academic year with exciting new changes and growth. It has been one year since program founder Michael Genovese passed the torch to the current director, Dimitri Tsimoyianis ’06, and with an introduction of a 4-year Service Program, the department has not lost momentum. Framing the new updates to the program, Dimitri remarks, “When I was hired, Father Jenkins shared his vision of this program and it included all of our students, not just the seniors. I imagined the implementation as a five-year goal, but after seeing exactly what our students are capable of, I was thinking it would be better if we started sooner. The best way for our students to become active citizens and Holy Cross men is to have them act like it immediately.” The new plan began last year with a refined system in senior year, when all the regulations, expectations, and assignments of the service requirement are outlined in a Service Learning Handbook custom designed for this program. The 2014-2015 version is available for students, parents, and community partners to see on the Service Learning page of the school website. Because of the unique nature of the program, there was a lot of anxiety surrounding the regulations and methods of the program. The purpose of the handbook is to give students better tools to record hours, organize their observations, and track personal progress. As a result, student focus shifts to the experience of serving others which positively impacts his personal success in the program. In regards to underclassmen, the new Service Learning Program is designed to be a progression. It will span all four years of a Holy Cross education through a seamless integration with the Theology department. The service component for freshmen is designed to introduce students to the core concepts of charity, social justice, and advocacy. In their Theology 9 classes, students will participate in a service curriculum that demonstrates the relative significance of charity to those in need. Specifically, the projects assist community partners that provide potable water to villages in Ghana and school supplies to students in Zimbabwe. They will learn that a simple, and relatively small, gesture can improve the lives of hundreds in need. Sophomores will build upon previous concepts and learn how to be advocates as they attend Service Seminars led by accomplished and inspirational guest speakers. In addition to that, there will also be trips to Alley Pond Environmental Center, St. Mary’s Hospital for Children, St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf, and the St. Alban’s VA Hospital. This is intended to provide a controlled environment where they can practice the advocacy skills they learned in class and in the seminars. In this component, students will learn about the spectrum of need present in their community and attempt to respond to those needs. Lastly, Juniors will have a modified version of what the Seniors experience. They will serve with specific community partner organizations and have a smaller requirement of hours compared to what is expected senior year. This is intended to prepare them for their work in a project that is more personal to them in senior service. Similar to the Sophomore component, there will be dedicated trips and seminars designed to help students discern what causes are important to them on a personal level. This four year program will better instill the value of service to each Holy Cross student. ALUMNI SERVICE SPOTLIGHT T he “Run to Daylight” education program is committed to helping inner city young men secure a top quality education not normally available to families of limited financial means. That mission statement is at the forefront of the organization, and is embraced by all involved with the program. had gathered enough equipment to suit up 200 kids. The program leverages athletics to help inner city youth strive for excellence in education. Behind the program is Tim Cavanaugh ’83, a Holy Cross alumnus who is committed to giving back to his community. The New York City Lions are the pride of Tim’s program. A youth football team located on the lower east side of Manhattan, the Lions are opening doors to kids who would have never had the opportunity in the first place. There were many challenges along the way. Finding a decent field to play on in downtown Manhattan is far from easy, but even with a field the Lions didn’t have any equipment when they started in January of 2012. One month later and with a lot of hard work, they “You work for what you get in life,” Tim says. “I learned a lot during my time at Holy Cross, and the importance of hard work and giving back stuck with me and with many of the guys I graduated with.” Tim was first drawn to coaching when his classmates, Stephen Hoffman ’82 and Greg Hoffman ’82 asked him to help coach the Queens Falcons. “I’ll never forget it. Stephen just called me one day and said, ‘you’ve got to come help us!’” Tim still credits Stephen, the godfather to his daughter, with much of the roots of the program, using him as a pivotal figure in his life. Stephen tragically was killed on September 11, 2001, but lives on through Tim’s work. Both Stephen and Tim had first begun to give back to their community during their time at Holy Cross, in Mr. Genovese’s senior service program. Tim worked with kids with autism at a small specialized learning center on Bell Boulevard. It was there he first saw what a difference one person can make, just by creating a positive environment for someone in need. As a coach and a mentor, Tim and his organization focus on kids with financial need and work with them to find quality educational options. They would like to send every athlete to a private school, such as Holy Cross or one of the many prep schools in the northeast. “We try to take these young men out of a negative environment and place them in a positive situation.” After a few short years, the program has already seen its success, both on the field and off. They went from an upstart to a competitive force, and they are putting their student-athletes in top high schools and colleges across the country. The Lions now serve kids between the ages of 8 and 18, with four teams. “There’s something about giving back; the gratification that you get is better than any money in your pocket or anything you could ever have. Watching a kid reach his potential is the best feeling in the world.” Tim and his brother Kevin ’80 started the Helen Cavanaugh Memorial Scholarship to honor their mother. The scholarship at Holy Cross goes to a student-athlete who demonstrates hard work in the classroom and a financial need.To follow “Run To Daylight” and the Lions’ success, find them at RunToDaylight.org or at Facebook.com/NYCLFL. PG . 8 HOLY CROSS HIGHLIGHTS Guidance Counselor Joseph Calabrese ’03 and The Project Stay Gold Club are working hard to spread awareness about human trafficking, a serious topic affecting high-school-age kids around the world today. Their efforts have included attending conferences, holding group discussions and organizing dress down days. Dan Considine retired after a 29-year career at Holy Cross teaching Health and Physical Education and coaching Freshman Basketball, and JV and Varsity Baseball. Best of luck, Dan! Brother Ralph Edmiston, C.S.C., passed away over the summer. His love for Holy Cross was unmatched. He served Holy Cross in many ways, including as a Golf coach, Advancement Associate, Walkathon Coordinator, and the basketball team’s number one fan. Donations can be made in his memory to the Brother Ralph Edmiston, C.S.C. Walkathon for Holy Cross. UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME HOLY CROSS HIGH SCHOOL INTRODUCES NEW VARSITY BASKETBALL HEAD COACH by Justin Boniello ’15 On March 20th, 2014, Holy Cross High School named one of its own, Terry Tarpey ’83, as new Head Coach of the school’s Varsity “A” basketball team. Coach Tarpey was an All-Queens player when he attended Holy Cross High School. Thereafter, he played Division III basketball at New York University. As captain of the 1986 NYU team, he led the Violets to their first NCAA appearance in 24 years. After graduating as NYU’s all time leading scorer with 1,778 points, Coach Tarpey was inducted into their Men's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993. Coach Tarpey went on to coach and play professionally in France from 1987 to 1997, then returned to the United States, where he coached basketball at Nassau Community College on Long Island. Coach Tarpey returned to his roots at Holy Cross in 2003 to coach the Varsity “B” Basketball team for four years, leading them to a City Championship in 2006. Now, as head of the entire basketball program, Coach Tarpey is prepared for new challenges in an always tough CHSAA. Holy Cross has long been a great competitor in a league stacked with talent, winning a league championship in 2008. With Coach Tarpey’s leadership, the Knights hope to continue on their winning path. “I am really excited. The basketball program has a great tradition, and it’s just an overall great positive environment,” Tarpey said describing his initial reaction to his hiring. As for his expectations for the upcoming season, Tarpey has high hopes. “I think we’ll be good. We have been working steadily in the offseason. The guys have been hitting the weight room. We are trying to establish a weight training program. We have had good attendance at the preseason workouts. We don’t have that 6’10” guy in the middle, but we have some skilled players, and I think we’ll be good if we continue to work hard. At the end of June, a group of our student-leaders, Brian Lavelle, Timothy Eliades, Patrick O’Donnell, and Daniel Sparrow, accompanied by Andrew D’Angelo, Director of Campus Ministry, and Dimitri Tsimoyianis, Director of Service Learning, travelled to the University of Notre Dame, and Holy Cross College, in South Bend, Indiana, to attend the Holy Cross Conference for Student Leaders. These young men and women, who are being educated in the faith, represent many of the schools around the country sponsored by the Congregation of Holy Cross. It provides them an opportunity to come together to share their best practices and engage in Christian-service opportunities. They also participate in leadership development activities, and share community, with one another, and the Brothers and Priests of the Congregation through the Liturgy and prayer. In addition to the educational component, the students also attended a South Bend Silver Hawks game, visited the South Bend Chocolate Company, and shared a wonderful meal at the famous Bruno’s Restaurant. During the second week of July, Andrew accompanied another group of Holy Cross students, Christopher Cadigan, Christopher Villaggi, Charles Peponakis, Dante Lenko, Alex LaPorte, and Jorge Guzman, to the University of Notre Dame to attend the ND VISION Conference, coordinated by the University’s Institute for Church Life. Father Jenkins welcomed our boys to campus with a visit to Corby Hall (the residence for the Priests and Brothers of the University), before they took up residence in the dorms and began a week of intense reflection on how God is calling them, and the ways in which they will use their gifts to respond. Our students joined hundreds of other young Catholics from around the country, including young women from our sister school, The Mary Louis Academy, in conferences and presentations offered by Notre Dame faculty, and nationally recognized leaders in the field of youth ministry. Our students also visited Old College, the undergraduate residence for the students of ND considering a vocation to Congregation of Holy Cross. Daily Mass and prayer, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation cemented the week’s activities and afforded attendees an opportunity to reflect on how to live fully and faithfully. PG . 10 REUNIONS HOCKEY REUNION O n Saturday April 19th, some of our great Holy Cross Knights gathered to play a scrimmage among themselves at the Port Washington Ice Skating Rink. It was exciting to see the alumni of the hockey program on the ice together again, many dusting off their old Holy Cross home and away jerseys. Over 25 alumni and a handful of our varsity hockey players divided up for the game that ultimately was decided by a sudden death goal in overtime. Many family, friends and fans of the hockey team also attended. Our thanks goes out to varsity head coach Kevin Goodspeed ’97 for organizing the event. On Tuesday, May 27th, two of our current hockey players were awarded Coach Mike Mitchell Scholarships, presented by Maureen Mitchell, in memory of her brother, Holy Cross High School’s first hockey coach. CLASS REUNIONS Forty years later, and the Class of 1974 still comes together and acts like they never left these halls. I am also the President of the newly formed Holy Cross High School Alumni Association. It was decided to reestablish the Alumni Association so the school can have a better outreach to the needs of its graduates. We realize that many of you belong to professional organizations or have affiliations with your colleges or graduate schools. We are not looking to replace any of these extracurricular activities that now play an important role in your life. What we are looking to do is to establish a more “formal” process for you and your fellow graduates in order to stay in touch with each other even when it is not your reunion year. We are not looking to bombard you with newsletters and surveys, but we are interested in establishing a more formal method of communications between the school and its alumni. Anyone who has participated in the process of contacting classmates at any level understands the difficulties in trying to track down the ones that we had lost track of. CREATE A LEGACY BY SHARING IN THE MISSION OF HOLY CROSS HIGH SCHOOL FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. “Holy Cross provided me the values needed to succeed in my personal, business and family life. In looking to provide others with similar opportunities, I decided the best way to accomplish this was by including a bequest in my will to Holy Cross. I am confident that a Holy Cross education will provide young men the necessary tools to become the needed Catholic leaders of tomorrow. Thus, my wife Doreen and I believe this is the best investment we can make for the future of our faith and the communities we live in.” -Bill Quinn ’61 Share in the mission of Holy Cross and help secure its future by including us in your Estate Planning. Contact Dr. James Sheehan at the Advancement Office for more information. HELP HOLY CROSS CONTINUE TO ENHANCE OUR What we would also like to do is to offer you an organization that will help gather us for social and networking opportunities. We also want to collect up-to-date information on all our graduates. Our hope is that once the infrastructure for the Association is in place, the process will become somewhat less daunting, and, somewhat more regular. That being said. I would like to thank both Father Walter Jenkins, President of Holy Cross High School, and, Dr. James Sheehan, Director of Advancement, for this opportunity. Thank You … and God Bless You All.
