Through its five key processes, noted on
the opposite page, the technical support
is implemented by the widely
experienced field based technologists
who are supported by centrally located
resources in manufacturing, technical
services and research at Port Kembla
(NSW) and Western Port (VIC).
Together with the Sales, Marketing,
Manufacturing and Research fraternities,
our Technical Services task is to facilitate

Product Applications Laboratory
This service is offered to customers either developing
their new products or streamlining existing products
and associated processes.
Customer Process Assistance
Solving a processing problem, developing a new process,
improve a current process, whatever the need, we offer
our assistance and extensive facilities across a wide range
of manufacture processes and fabrication technologies eg.
forming, welding, joining, plant layout etc.
Customer Technical Assistance
The provision of technical assistance in the selection of
the right BlueScope Steel product and its suitability for
your intended manufacture and end use. We will work
with you to provide specialist service for all technical
aspects of BlueScope Steel’s product offer and provide
access to BlueScope Steel’s extensive technological
resources and facilities.
Technical Literature and Training
We are able to provide a wide range of BlueScope
Steel technical information together with technical
training specifically designed to meet your needs.
Technical Product Management
Technical management of BlueScope Steel’s Hot Rolled,
Cold Rolled, Metallic Coated and Organic Finished products
involves working with you to ensure we fully understand
your needs for your applications and translating these
needs into the correct BlueScope Steel product. Ongoing
product development and monitoring of field performance
and durability of BlueScope Steel products are important
components of technical product management.

BlueScope Steel have highly trained technical people
located at all of our State Sales Offices supported by
Works based experts
dedicated to assisting
you in all technical
aspects of BlueScope
Steel products and
subsequent processing
of these products.
Our support people are

Product Applications Laboratory
The Product Applications Laboratory (PAL), at Port Kembla,
is a dedicated R & D facility for BlueScope Steel customers,
providing assistance and advice on steel product design,
prototype production, fabrication and joining techniques.
Staffed by qualified
and experienced
engineers,
metallurgists and
sheet metal
fabricators, PAL
can help turn
your good idea
into a viable
product ready
for full scale
manufacture.
At the same time, it can help you save money in the long run
by determining the most cost-effective methods and
materials up-front.
More specifically, PAL can help with:
Practical Design Advice Our staff can work with you to
resolve ergonomic, durability, aesthetic, strength and
transport issues, to name a few.
Prototype Development PAL has its own metal forming
equipment, including a CNC brakepress, pan brakes,
Magnabend folder, curving rolls, punch press and
Pullmax machinery.
In-house Testing Our test facilities can be used to
determine the most suitable steel type for your product
in terms of structural performance and corrosion
resistance, and the most effective fabrication and joining
techniques – adhesion, welding or mechanical fastening.
PAL can also help you
get your product to the
next level, putting you
in touch with
competent suppliers,
manufacturers and
service providers.
Technical Literature and Training
To support the industry’s thrust for increased technical
competency and quality accreditation, BlueScope Steel
provide an extensive
range of appropriate
technical literature,
computer assisted
learning packages
and training to satisfy
the needs of your
personnel.
Our technical literature
provides clear
guidance on BlueScope Steel’s product characteristics,
the range of options within each product type and the
capability of the product to be successfully processed
through your manufacturing operations. These attributes
are well covered through BlueScope Steel’s Product Data
Manuals and Technical Bulletin Series. Much of this
information can be accessed through the BlueScope Steel

Our training courses can be designed specifically for your
needs and conducted in your premises or at a venue
suitable to you. The courses can cover a wide range of
subjects, for example, BlueScope Steel product
characteristics, BlueScope Steel product/end use
suitability/durability, manufacturing technology and process
methodology, in-house materials handling storage and
auditing programmes to avoid loss of product. Please
contact our State based Technical Service people, your

BlueScope Steel Technical Service people have a wide

based Technical Services people, and
our offices outside Australia, we need
