The production was led by Mr Goodger and Miss White and they were ably supported by Mr Buckley, Miss Tiktin, Mrs Lynn and a group of Post 16 students. 2 Brookvale News The Lion King cont…. The show was great fun to produce and every student involved got a huge amount from it. We had a very talented cast to work with and we could not be more proud of their achievements. We also want to thank all of the staff and parents who helped us make the production possible. It takes a lot of commitment from all the students involved to produce something on such a large scale but we couldn’t do it without the amazing support we get from the school Community!! 3 Brookvale News Brookvale goes A Capella On the 22nd April we were very lucky to have the a capella group ‘The Sons of Pitches’ come into school to run a singing workshop with some of our students. All day members of the group were teaching students how to make their voices sound like instruments, beatbox and harmonise with each other. It was a fantastic day which was enjoyed by all. A big thanks has to go to the Leicestershire Music Hub who gave us the funding to be able to run such an event. Now we’ve all been inspired, let’s get Brookvale singing… 4 Brookvale News Have you ever wanted to know who your Form Tutor’s favourite celebrity is ? The aroma of cooking and baking filled our school corridors on Friday 12th February 2016, when we were joined by a host of Year 3 children, all eager to participate in our annual ‘Bake Off’ activity morning! Aprons at the ready, flour a-flying, under the guidance of Ms Owen, our Food Technology Teacher, the children (and their relevant staff members) got well and truly stuck in to create their very own version of a Pizza Pin Wheel, where they practised their dough making skills, perfected their knife techniques and learnt how to use an oven safely. Delicious and healthy fillings were loaded on to the pizza base all ready to cook and sample, and washing up and cleaning down was even thoroughly enjoyed! Well done Year 3. Brookvale looks forward to welcoming you again in the not so distant future, when you begin your Food Technology lessons with us in Year 7. 8 Brookvale News WELCOME KEY STAGE 2 CHILDREN On Friday 18th March 2016, we were thrilled to host another annual event involving our local Primaries. On this occasion, Mrs Pattison and Mrs Mawbey, two of our Science Teachers, welcomed Year 6 Scientists to our Primary Science Morning. As this Science morning fell on the day of the Sports Relief charitable event, the activities were centred round that theme. The budding Scientists burnt food to determine which food source gave the most energy, after which exercise was the name of the game, as the children monitored their pulse rate to find out what happened following a period of physical activity. Some of our own Year 8 students assisted the children whilst they used data loggers and recorded their findings. After such a hectic morning, refreshments for all were enjoyed, and it was a delight to hear the chatter between the children as they reflected. on their experiences. 9 Brookvale News Puzzle Page Try these 3 puzzles & check the next newsletter for the answers 10 Brookvale News PE Newsletter March 2016 Boys Football The final fixture of the season saw both years 8 and 9 travelled to Winstanley to play. Year 8 came up against a disorganised but quick team who soon went into the lead. After half time our boys began to play some more controlled rugby and finish as winners. Year 9 on the other hand played a robust and fast team who ran away with the game. Results v Winstanley Year 8 won 35-25 Year 9 lost 15-65 Year 7 entered the Leicestershire Schools Rugby Union festival held at the Loughborough Grammar school playing fields at Quorn. On a sunny afternoon, with the ground ideal for rugby the boys were placed in groups with teams of equal ability. The idea being to have competitive and enjoyable games, evenly contested, and this proved to be the case. The boys played three games all close affairs despite the scores and won all three. They beat Lancaster Boys 6 tries to 1, Martin High school 5 -2 and Dixie Grammar 5-2 also. Overall it was an impressive performance from our boys. Year 9 played in the Taran Gill Memorial 7’s Rugby Tournament, held at Brookvale, on the Wednesday after the Easter holiday. The weather was bright and sunny and the ground again ideal for rugby. Unfortunately the boys lost their first game against Winstanley 7-24, and went into the Plate competition. Playing better and better rugby as the games progressed, they then beat South Charnwood 29-10, and in the plate final beat Redmoor 35 -17. It was a good finish for the team in their last game for the school. 11 Brookvale News PE Newsletter March 2016 cont….. The workshop was great as we got to ask questions and get feedback about our writing from the author himself! It was a brilliant experience! Holly P. He told us about his life at school, where he loved sport and didn’t like English because he didn’t get the chance to write stories! Matthew N. 13 Brookvale News Award-winning author Tim Bowler Visits He told us how he got inspired and that has inspired me to do more writing. Ravinder S. During the hour we completed a range of activities that were a way to get ideas for our own creative writing – finding a place, a time, a character, an event. Darren M. Tim told us that he doesn’t actually plan his books – he just dives in! I thought a book needed lots of planning but obviously not!
