AUTOMATED MATERIAL HANDLING
Front Belt
The Brains of the System
This is the intelligent component of the AMH. The Front Belt
reads the RFID tag or bar code on the book, media or other
material and identifies the appropriate bin for sorting. It then
moves the book on to a Conveyor Belt, Turn Table or directly to a
Sorter module.
At least one Front Belt is required in every Automated Material
Handling (AMH) system.

Conveyor Belt
Keeps Materials Moving
The Conveyor Belt exists solely to keep books, media and other
materials moving through the Automated Material Handling
machine. It lengthens the track in which materials travel until
it connects with a Turn Table or Sorter, where the materials
complete their journey.
A Conveyor Belt is not a required component in every Automated
Material Handling (AMH) system.

Turn Table
Redirects Materials to Accommodate Spacial Limitations
The Turn Table receives books, media and other materials via
a Conveyor Belt or Front Belt and then spins its turn table to
redirect the materials onto another Conveyor Belt or Sorter
module.
A Turn Table is not a required component in every Automated
Material Handling (AMH) system.

Sorter
Delivers Materials to their Respective Bins
The Sorter is the section of track that actually drops materials
into their designated bins. Materials may travel through multiple
consecutive Sorters before reaching the Sorter module that is
connected to the identified bin. Consecutive Sorter modules have
only two drop points on opposite sides, and the last Sorter in the
run will have the third sorting point.
At least one Sorter module is required in every Automated
Material Handling (AMH) system.

AUTOMATED MATERIAL HANDLING
Automated Material Handling (AMH)
What Goes Out Comes Back In
Automated Material Handling (AMH) truly frees librarians
to use their expertise and knowledge fulfilling higher-order
patron needs. AMH is compatible with Bar Code, EM and RFID
technologies, and can be designed to work in spaces of all sizes.
Components:
• Inlet: The point of return for library materials. It is possible
to configure several inlets to feed into one common sorting
line, giving you flexibility to accommodate indoor and outdoor
returns.
• Front Belt: This is the intelligent component of the AMH.
It reads the RFID tag or bar code and identifies the appropriate
bin for sorting.
• Conveyor Belt: A section of track that keeps materials moving
Inlet
• Turn Table: A module that navigates materials in various
directions
• Sorter: A section of track that actually feeds materials into their
designated bin
• Bins: Mobile carts that books drop into from the conveyor
belts. Most will feature a suspension mechanism with a
padded bottom, minimizing the distance the material drops

• Tote Stacker & Lift: These tools work in conjunction with
standard library totes to minimize the amount of lifting. Totes
can be used as an optional sorting bin for library systems that
allow returned materials to any library, and offer inter-library
loan programs
• Ergo Trolleys: Ergonomic, narrow trolley-style returns that
increase the frequency of reshelving, and are generally used
in larger installations. You can use a mix of bins, totes and
trolleys within your AMH system
• On-Hold Printer: A stand-alone printer connected to your ILS
immediately prints new labels for on-hold items as they pass
through the Inlet and drop into a specified “on-hold bin”
