Directions for Dual Credit Enrollment Process --Steps I and II
HCC Northwest and Strake Jesuit Preparatory College for Fall 2007
Enrolling in a Dual Credit class is a four-step process. Directions for completing Steps I and II are included in
this letter. Directions for completing Step III (enrolling in class) and Step IV (paying for your class) will be given
to you at Strake Jesuit when you return to school in August. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU
COMPLETE STEPS I AND II DURING THE SUMMER.
You should complete the following during the summer. (See directions below. Also follow the timeline).
1. Apply for admission to HCC online.
2. Have an official copy of your High School Transcript.
3. Bring the official transcript in the sealed unopened envelope to an HCC Counselor at an HCC campus showing
SAT or ACT scores or bring the SAT or ACT score report sent to your home to an HCC counselor.
4. Take the COMPASS Test at HCC if you have no SAT/ACT test scores or do not qualify for the SAT/ACT
exemption. **All AP Calculus students enrolling for Dual Credit MUST take the math
portion of the COMPASS test regardless of their SAT or ACT scores.
Step I-- Applying for Admission to Houston Community College Online
STEP I--Applying for admission to HCC is the first step that you must take before you can enroll in a Dual Credit class.
You can complete this step from an internet-connected computer. You should complete this (Step I) just as soon as possible.
This process gets you into the HCC database but does not get you into a Dual Credit class. A student must be in the HCC
database before anything else can happen. Information on qualifying for college-level classes (Step II) is located on the
reverse side of this letter. Directions for enrolling in classes (Step III) and applying for a tuition waiver (Step IV) will be
provided to you separately after you return to school in August. (See Tuition-Waiver Information on reverse side).
Directions for Applying for Admission to HCC online at www.hccs.edu
1.
Go to www. hccs.edu and click on “For Students,” then “Admissions and Records,” then “New Students,” then “Online
Application,” and then “New Applicant” and then follow directions. This can be done from an internet-connected computer
or you may go to the open computer lab at an HCC campus for assistance.
•
•
You will need your correct date of birth to complete the process.
You will need your Social Security number to complete the process.
o If you do not have a Social Security number, you may still complete the online application as long as you
have a valid visa. Leave the social security space blank and HCC will assign you a number.
o If you do not have a Social Security number or valid visa, you must enroll in person at an HCC campus.
HERE ARE SOME HINTS FOR YOU AS YOU ENROLL ONLINE:
• You are a resident of Texas if you were born in Texas or if you have lived in Texas for one year.
• You will be enrolling in “Semester Credit Hours” toward an associate or bachelor degree.
• Select concurrent enrollment. It means the same as Dual Credit.
• Select an appropriate area of study such as General Studies or Liberal Arts.
• IMPORTANT: When asked, check the box for “Semester Credit Hour”--DO NOT check “Adult High School”
or “Continuing Education.”
• If you were born in the U.S., ignore the request for a “Permanent Residency Number.” It does not apply to you.
• Be sure to put in the correct city and county of your residency.
2.
HCC STUDENT IDENTIFICATION NUMBER--You MUST apply for admission ONLINE in order to get into the HCCS
database and receive an HCC Student Identification Number. The number will be assigned to you before you complete the
application process. Write down your HCC Identification Number and save it. HCC maintains its student records by a
student’s number not by a student’s name. If you lose your number, you may retrieve it by clicking on prompt “Forgot User
I.D” on the HCC student web site or you may receive help at an HCC campus site to retrieve it using your Social Security
number.
My HCC Identification Number is: _____________________
3.
ACCEPTANCE LETTER--After a student completes the HCC online Application, he or she should select to print out the
HCC “Acceptance Letter.” Students should write their HCC Student Identification Number on the “Acceptance Letter”
and also put the number some place where they can always find it. The student will also be able to print a copy of his or her
application. Once the online Application window is closed, however, YOU MAY NOT GO BACK INTO THE
APPLICATION WINDOW AGAIN. If you made an error and closed out the Application, you must go to an HCC campus
to get the error corrected. An example of an error would be selecting Adult High School rather than semester credit hour.
STEP II-Dual Credit Process—Fall 2007-2008
STEP II--Students must be juniors or seniors, meet their high school requirements for taking Dual Credit classes, and meet both
the State of Texas Success Initiative (TSI) testing and placement requirements and HCC’s testing and course placement requirements.
*The State of Texas has established minimum criteria for students to take college-level classes. Students may meet the State TSI
requirement through either A or B:
A. A student may qualify for an exemption from State TSI testing requirements by meeting or exceeding specified scores on
the following tests:
• ACT (19 verbal, 19 math, composite 23)
• SAT (500 math, 500 critical reading, composite score 1070 on only these two components of the SAT test)
B. A student may qualify by earning specified scores on a state approved test such as COMPASS or THEA:
• Achieving specified scores on the State-approved COMPASS Test or the THEA Test:
o HCC-Northwest administers the COMPASS Test at both the Town and Country and Westgate Center
Testing Centers. Students, who wish to take the COMPASS Test to qualify for a Dual Credit
class, should go to an HCC counselor who will provide them with a document to take to the
Testing Center. There is no cost for the COMPASS Test. The test, which is computer-based, may take
3-4 hours to complete. Take the test as soon as possible. After completing the COMPASS Test, return
to the HCC counselor to have COMPASS Test scores assessed. If a student qualifies for a Dual Credit
class, the counselor will record that in the HCC database and the student will be ready to enroll in
college-level classes when school begins in August.
o The COMPASS Test cannot be retaken for 30 days. Successful scores must be achieved before classes
begin. HCC counselors are available on a walk-in basis. No appointment is necessary. The Testing
Center is open Monday through Thursday until 8:00 p.m. but students need to be there by 5:00 in order
to have adequate time to complete the test. It is also open on Friday until 4:30.
***Calculus--IMPORTANT FOR CALCULUS STUDENTS:
AP Calculus students who are applying for Dual Credit at HCC
MUST take the math section of the COMPASS Test regardless of their ACT or SAT scores. Do this early; you can re-test after 30
days. Math placement testing can take up to one and a half hours. To see a sample of the Compass Test go to:
www.act.org/compass/index.html
*To document compliance with the State TSI requirements, a student must hand deliver an official, sealed copy of his
high school transcript to an HCC counselor at the Town and Country Campus or the Westgate Campus showing test scores or
bring in an original SAT or ACT score report. If a student is using THEA Test results, an original copy of the test score
should be brought to an HCC counselor for assessment. Counselors will assess test scores and enter eligibility for collegelevel classes into the HCC database or send the student to take the COMPASS Test to establish eligibility.
A student is ready to complete Steps III and IV once he or she has completed the HCC application online (STEP I) and established
his or eligibility to take college-level classes (STEP II). Directions for enrolling in a Dual Credit class (STEP III) and paying the outof-district fee or qualifying for a full in-district waiver (STEP IV) will be provided to students when they return to school in August.
TUITION-WAIVER INFORMATION-- Strake Jesuit students will receive a full waiver for tuition & fees if they live InDistrict, within the HCC taxing district--HISD, Stafford Municipal School District & parts of Missouri City. They will be able to take
Dual Credit classes for free. If they live Out-of-District --AISD, KISD, CyFair ISD, FBISD, SBISD--, they will pay the Out-ofDistrict fee of $54 per credit hour since they do not pay property tax to support HCC. For Dual Credit students, tuition and fees,
except for the Out-of-District fee, have been waived by the HCC Board of Trustees. (This is always subject to change by the Board).
Transferability of Credit Hours—Public colleges and universities within the State of Texas are required by state law to accept most
college-level courses in transfer from another State public institution as core course of study or elective credit. Most Dual Credit
students are taking core courses required of all majors. Students may verify the transferability of credit by asking the college or
university if it accepts HCC college-level credit in transfer. Do not ask if they take High School Dual Credit classes in transfer. While
many private and out-of-state institutions accept HCC college-level courses in transfer, students are advised to confirm that with the
private or out-of-state institutions.
