With Minato Mirai 21, we are proceeding apace with the creation of an appealing town
and attractive cityscape, aiming for the creation of an urban environment that feels
both fun and comfortable.
With the aid and cooperation of many of those joining us in this undertaking,
we have installed more than 60 pieces of public art across the city.
Each of these pieces of art creates a uniquely individual space, rich in expression and so
very approachable, giving rise to a richer culture in the city.
Why not take this art guide in hand and head out on a stroll through Minato Mirai 21,
seeing which of these diverse and characteristic pieces of public art you can find?
Meeting with these works of art will surely introduce you to a new, appealing side of
Minato Mirai 21, one that perhaps you never noticed before.

This piece was created based on the winning
design from among those submitted by the public
as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary
of the founding the Junior Chamber International
Yokohama in 2001. The artist who designed it got
the idea when the artist saw a seagull lifting off
from in front of Yokohama Bay Bridge. The cables
of Yokohama Bay Bridge looked like a harp,
leading to the concept of “a seagull being gently
nurtured while playing the melody of Yokohama.”
The piece was donated to Yokohama City by the
Junior Chamber International Yokohama, in
gratitude to the citizens of the city.

The artist was born in 1930.
One of the largest pieces of stained glass in the world,
created based on an image drawn by the artist who
was inspired by the stars in the night sky on June 2,
1994, the date of the anniversary of the opening of
the port and the day the National Convention Hall
opened. See if you can spot a mythical rendition of
the Milky Way, and constellations such as Virgo, Libra,
Scorpio and Ophiuchus. The stained glass panels are
combined together in such a way as to make you feel
the infinite nature of the universe. The piece is also
linked to the idea of the convention hall as a place
from which information is sent out into the world,
and that the stars are something that can be seen at
night anywhere in the world.

The artist was born in 1943.
Created with wishes for safe flights out of Yokohama,
calm sailing for PACIFICO Yokohama, and the hope for
world peace. The original model of the piece can be
seen in the 1F lobby of Inter Continental Yokohama

The artist was born in 1931 in Yamagata Prefecture.
This piece is a “rainbow bridge,” connecting Japan
and Brazil in celebration of 100 years of friendly
relations between the two countries. The iron part
represents the passage taken by ships across the vast
ocean to the distant country on the other side of the
world, and the friendship between them that has
lasted for so many years. The stainless steel curve
represents a bridge that links the two countries
across time and space. An identical piece is located in
Brazil, in the city of São Paulo, pointing toward
Yokohama.

The artist was born in 1961 in Busan, Korea.
The artist is representative of pop art in Korea, and
known for his colorful and eye-catching work. In
particular, he has made a lasting impression with
exhibitions of large balloons in the shapes of things
like flowers and pigs (which are considered lucky in
Korea). This particular piece was entered in the
“Yokohama Triennale 2001,” and was then moved to
Rinko Park.

The shipyards that can be seen from the location of
the piece, and the dull metallic sounds of the work
being conducted there. Taking onboard the
atmosphere of this place, the artist created a piece
with that feels as though it is made from ship parts.
The wings move differently depending on the
strength of the wind coming off the sea, providing us
with visual confirmation of the energy of nature.

The artist was born in 1937 in Yamagata Prefecture.
The artist paid particular attention to the position of
the sun behind the piece, and the time it will spend
during the day in silhouette. The seabird in front of
the girl does not represent time having stopped, but
rather the ongoing passage of time. For the artist,
aiming to represent an “instant” in which the tension
fades from human feelings and time itself freezes, the
chosen location has an extremely important meaning.
What meaning does the port of Yokohama hold within
the entire urban space?

This piece was specifically created to give 4 year
elementary school children a symbol of their own.
Children, eager to exercise their young power and
realize ideals that they depict beyond the sea. Adults,
wishing for those children to grow up strong in heart
and mind. The artist has attempted to find a symbol
for them both. The base is shaped like a boat and a
wave.

The artist was born in 1966 in Nagoya City.
The piece comprises the floor of a open space in
which events are held. The artist created the piece
with an awareness of the function of the space as
place to consider human life and communication,
amid the ever expanding urban space. Look closely at
the white spheres, floating in the red. The artist, who
believes that spheres appeal to femininity in a way
that transcends gender, is questioning us, through
these appealing, natural pearl shapes, about the true
meaning of communication.

The artist was born in 1939 in America.
An artist who works with a pipe motif. This piece is a
“Transmission Booth,” a device that can move people
anywhere, and also an “Imagination Gate,” a gateway
to creativity. The belief, and indeed desire, of the
artist, that using our imagination can take us
anywhere, is intrinsically reflected in this piece. The
children playing in front of it may have already
opened the imagination gate and traveled to another
dimension.

The artist was born in 1947 in Spain.
The motif of the piece is a father with his child, a
mother with her baby on her shoulders, and a dog
around their feet. The dog is a symbol of the
atmosphere and life that comes from the bond
between family, the feelings of happiness, and the
relationship between them. The connection between
the mother and the dog represents the bond of
communication by instinct, without words, such as
can be shared with animals and children. The artist’s
belief that family is both the start of life, and the form
that life must take, is clearly represented here.

The artist was born in 1945 in America.
Try reading this text, written in both Japanese and
German. It is an extract from a letter, sent by German
poet and playwright Friedrich von Schiller to the
Prince of Denmark. The intent of the artist in putting
this on display in Yokohama is to create a bridge into a
variety of different ways of thinking, with
consideration given to what art is and what it can be
in a variety of contexts, different cultures and
different periods of time. The artist is known around
the world as a leader in conceptual art.

The artist was born in 1958 in Fukuoka City.
Couples who have a wedding at the hotel will find a
wonderful photo opportunity here, and indeed, the
artist created this piece with that very purpose in
mind. A wedding is the bringing together of two
people. This piece is also created in order to allow
each part to be individual, and yet also part of a
group. Sitting together is a representation of living
together through the same times, while sitting alone
will make one think of who could share the empty
seat; maybe someone we cannot meet again.

The artist was born in 1948.
A piece that spreads dynamically across the wall and
floor. It uses a wave motif to depict the vital,
energetic activity of the people who use Yokohama as
a base, a city that has always been wide open to the
world. The vibrantly colored, sparkling materials will
allow you to feel the intent behind a ship, setting out
into a future filled with hope.

The artist was born in Greece.
A light, white drape and wings flying through the air.
The artist, known for her stage design, here uses
themes common to mythology from around the
world, such as a white drape, light symbol and
wings, creating an illusory sculpture. The use of
both very Greek and very Eastern symbols aims to
create a light piece, overflowing with hope.

These two pieces represent the manmade and the
natural, giving consideration to their location, on
the boundary between buildings and the sea. The
artist is known for interesting works, characterized
by an appearance like combined puzzle pieces, with
this piece specifically reflects a city that seeks
unification with the sea.

The artist was born in 1956 in Osaka Prefecture.
This multi-part piece is attached to the top of the 18
“multi-poles” placed throughout Queen Mall. These
multipurpose pillars, which carry signs, banners,
clocks etc., have been transformed to look like
plants by the artist’s fusion of art and signage. The
piece creates the impression of plants moving in the
wind, inside a manmade space without any wind at
all, depicting a new format for urban art.
The “Bird on Water” at the Yokohama Bank building
is also by this artist.

This piece uses warm red colors to vividly depict a
lively group of 20 goddesses as they play the music
of the wind, inviting you into a liberation of
emotions perfectly suited to a space for music. You,
st
the observer, are the 21 goddess. In order to get a
full sense of the time and space of blessings, the
artist spent a few months on-site, with this piece as
the final product. The piece was a gift to the
citizens of Yokohama from the artist.

The artist was born in 1924 in Yokohama City.
Originally working as an aircraft engineer, the artist
became aware that modern art is lacking in light
and movement, and moved to Germany in order to
start making art of his own. This piece is called a
“light kinetic” sculpture, using the reflections of
light on the surface of the stainless steel to create
an awareness of movement. Furthermore, reflecting
the surrounding scenery allows more beautiful
colors to be depicted.
Winner of a prize in the “Minato Mirai 21 Sculpture
Exhibition Yokohama Biennale 86”.

The hands, chest, eyes, body. Can you tell which

The artist created a new form of sculpture based on
restructuring of the human form via the principles
and techniques of abstract art and cubism. This is
one piece you will want to take in by slowly walking

The artist was born in 1951 in Saitama Prefecture.
The theme of this piece is “love.” Taking a motif of
the human body and combining it with basic, almost
geometric shapes, elevates it to rich and varied
expressions. The form of the piece encompasses a
large area, bringing in group-based elements with a
family motif. This piece will surely make you feel the

The artist was born in 1926 in Kyoto.
The artist, known for working with ceramics, has
produced around 1,000 “ceramic wall” pieces,
located both across all of Japan and overseas. Taking
into account the location of this piece, on the public
passageway on the third floor of Landmark Plaza,
the green on the porcelain panels sticks out an
additional 30mm from the surround, bringing out a
sense of sculpted depth. The golden waves depict
an expression of vitality, with the sun rising over the
ocean, while the silver waves reflect back the
moonlight, speaking to calmer seas.

(Renewal)
These five pillars are lined up at the entrance to the
Cross Gate, placed in order to bring enjoyment to
pedestrians walking along close to the station. Taking
inspiration from the “sea”, the backdrop of
Yokohama, the piece includes images of sea and
waves, is placed by facilities representative of the
city, and also somehow invokes the retro atmosphere
of Yokohama. The poles represent the barrier
between the “Courtyard” open to the people and a
public space, and also function as the gateway to
Minato Mirai. Based in an image of the beautiful
nightscape of the city, the poles have lights inside,
and have become a symbol of the Cross Gate.

The artist was born in 1948.
The four pieces create a feeling of unification across the
entire space. The wall piece “FUJI” uses a mosaic to depict
the vicinity of Mt. Fuji, obviously of great significance to
“FUJISOFT Inc.”, along with the sun to depict a source of
energy, and children to depict the potential of the future,
shining with a golden light to represent the link between
internet companies and communication. The mosaic floor
st
“Pulse of the 21 Century” uses a combination of fine
ceramics (an unchanging material that represents eternal
continuation) and vetri (a traditional form of Italian made
gold leaf glass mosaic, used since ancient Roman times),
and creates an image of running from the floor and up
onto the “FUJI” on the wall. All of these pieces represent
the ideology of the company through art. Other pieces by
the same artist can be seen on the wall and floor in
Queen’s Square Yokohama. (Name of piece: Embarkation)

In front of the entrance to the Kenmin-Kyosai Plaza
Building, large porcelain panels are used to recreate
the Hiroshige III piece “Image of Steam Train Turning
on Yokohama Railroad.” At Sakuragichou Station
there is a memorial that states “site of the origin of
the railroad”, and until the second Yokohama Station
opened in 1915, Sakuragichou Station was Yokohama
Station. This building, located next to Sakuragichou
Station, includes the desire for people to know this
part of the history of the region.

The artist was born in 1956 in Osaka Prefecture.
This piece includes the desires of the artist, “People
cannot live only surrounded by useful things, can
they?” and “Might we not be saved by placing a
sculpture, that serves no purpose, in the middle of a
town surrounded by useful things?” This piece is
designed to rotate in the wind, and cannot rotate
faster than a fixed speed even in high winds. The
same artist also create the piece “Breathing Color”
for the International Stadium Yokohama, which was
completed in 1998.

The artist was born in 1943 in Poland.
A minimalistic artist, working to make forms as
abstract as possible. The feeling of vitality that he
experienced in the never-ending city after traveling
from Warsaw to New York became the wellspring
from which this piece was born. The complicated
floor pattern is an abstraction of Manhattan as seen
from the sky, placed alongside a simplified Warsaw
Cross, linking the two cities together. Then, placing
this piece in Yokohama also now links the three
cities together. The cross also functions as a bench.
Why not take a seat and look out over the
Manhattan Grid?

The artist was born in 1940 in Hyogo Prefecture.
A piece comprising bronze rods wrapped in
Japanese paper, creating lines across the space. Pay
close attention to how the blue-green staining of
the paper medium moves toward the inside and
outside of the circles and squares. You’ll surely
realize that the extent of the piece is not limited to
just these shapes, the interiors of these circles and
squares. The change in the paper with the
blue-green gradually starting to show through is
also included in the concept of the piece. The artist
is known as the leading conceptual artist in Japan.

The artist was born in 1961 in Ceuta, Spain.
An artist who works with transforming an entire
space by bringing a three dimensional work into it.
His theme is always “utopia.” This piece is also a
representation of a future utopia, with the form of
an organic white city built at a height right on the
cusp of being too high to see. There is a message
from the artist on the glass just at eye level, so take
a moment to read it. The three pieces together
forms one art.

The artist was born in 1963 in Oita Prefecture.
This piece is placed in an outside relaxation space,
taking the motif of Yokohama, having grown along
with the sea, “the land, now crowded with tall
buildings, continues to grow toward the sky.”
Reflected images of words relating to “sky” appear
and disappear on the surface of the pond, and then
when the water draws back words relating to “sea”
appear on the bottom. The artist’s own definition of
the piece is “a device that recalls the primal
memories of humans, born in the sea and raised on
the land, allowing us to look upon our true form.” A
piece that allows you to feel the spread of a space.

One of the oldest stone-made docks, and reuses a
dock (the current Dock Yard Garden) that was
formerly located in Minato Mirai 21, to create a
relaxing verdant green space with a bench. “Human
Dock” is comprised of the “ship dock part”, recreating
the space of the dock using stone, and then an
abstract sculpture of the ship stopped there. The
dock stone is placed here in order to impart the
assets of the city to the next generation.

The motif of ship generated waves represents
“forward moving energy” and “a hopeful future,”
while the carved names of ports from around the
world represent “Yokohama being linked to the
world.” Furthermore, illumination is provided at
night by internal LEDs, depicting waves that give the
impression of “Yokohama, A Round-the-Clock
Cosmopolitan Cultural City.”

A joint piece between Tetsuko Hitoshi,
Representative of Associated Arts Inc., born in 1954
in Hokkaido, and Megumi Ishibashi, born in 1976 in
Tokyo.
A screw is used to represent the memories of this
place as a ship yard, overlaid with an image of the
Yokohama flower, the rose, sending a message into
the future. Created as a companion piece to the
historical monument “Anchor” that is placed in the
Living Garden, and has become a visually clear,
approachable, familiar icon. The piece is as though
leading you from the liberating entrance hall into the
central mall and garden.

This anchor was discovered during the construction
of a new building, and is now on display in the living
garden, itself designed to look like a wave running
alongside the pedestrian way. The piece includes a
desire to connect the town and the people together,
in the same way that an anchor fixes a ship in the
sea, and also a wish to turn one’s back to the sea,
firmly set down an anchor on land and make it safely
through the turmoil of the world. The rust on the
anchor conjures images of the heavy industries that
have led the modernization of Yokohama and Japan,
and amid this nature, it speaks to the profundity and
history of the development of Yokohama.

The vast range of life that overflows across the Earth takes
many different forms, sizes, materials and compositions,
but at the most basic, genetic and molecular level they are
all extremely simple, with the myriad forms of complex
life created by the subtle and varied combinations of
these basic elements. The concept of the piece is “the
form of life,” and taking a very simple mathematical
pattern (Voronoi diagram) that appears repeatedly
throughout the natural world and all forms of life in a
variety of forms and scales, recomposes it in a very basic
shape in order to depict the power of nature and life that
is rooted in our everyday existence. Taking the entire
facility to be a natural environment, such as a verdant
green forest, uses it as a symbol of the natural
environment and biology, making an even clearer image of
“the form of life” and creating a concrete symbol of the
advanced nature of the facilities and the region.

The artist was born in 1936 in Yokosuka City.
There may well be some people who look at this and
just wonder what it can possibly be. This unique
piece was created with an awareness of the passage
and flow of the wind, with the concept of a “trailing
cloud.” As there were concerns that powerful eddies
of wind may form around the buildings here, the
piece also serves to diffuse these eddies. At night,
the lights on the piece not only light up the art itself,
but also provide illumination for the vicinity, creating
a dynamic space.

The artist was born in 1937 in Osaka Prefecture.
The artist has been working to use the characteristics
of natural energy in his pieces since the ’70 Expo in
Osaka, producing a continuing stream of pieces that
move via wind and water. The white wings of this
piece also rotate in the wind, allowing a variety of
expressions to be displayed.

The artist was born in 1931.
A young boy and girl are standing close to each
other; just what might they be doing? The girl is
pointing at something in the sky. Maybe it is a symbol
of hope, and maybe they are just looking at a flying
bird together. The artist has also created the Large
Tengu and Small Tengu for Kenchou-ji Temple in
Kamakura, and the Minamoto no Yorimasa “Defeat of
the Nue” in Nishiwaki City.

The artist was born in 1860 in Dijon, France.
Two pieces from the same artist. They are both very
small, so move up and take a close look. The piece in
the top photo has a girl holding a mandolin in her
left hand, and in her right hand, is that a bouquet of
flowers? The second piece shows a young girl,
apparently talking to a bird that is perched on her
th
hand. The artist is a representative of late 19
century Art Nouveau, creating many pieces with
themes of children.

The artist was born in 1942 in Tokyo.
The artist is known for pioneering sculpture into a
previously unexplored realm, keeping the calm and
relaxed styling of traditional Japanese art while
creating visualizations of the way a sound spreads or
is communicated. “The communications base that
has been created in Mintao Mirai is also a place from
which information is sent into the future. I created
this piece with an image of people being connected
together by invisible threads, expanding our range of
communication and sending our discourse ringing
out into space.” The shape of the piece, using dully
shining lines and arcs of wood covered in black lead
to create a “place” with a real space-age feeling, not
only invokes the invisible world of communications
but also brings calm and relaxation to a modern
architectural space.

The artist was born in 1945.
Amid the monotone entrance hall, the vivid blue and
yellow of these two linked Möbius strips can
immediately be seen even from far away. The artist’s
thinking behind the piece was that, “the unending
brain processes of ‘discovery’ and ‘invention’ carried
out by those people who provide us with the
technology to transmit across the country, the
world, and even into space, is the epitome of a
dream corridor, and I want artwork to be suggestive
of ‘science’, and be in sympathy with it.” The two
Möbius strips represent the independence and yet
connection between ‘NTT Facilities, Inc.’ and ‘NTT
DoCoMo, Inc.,’ the owners of the Yokohama Media
Tower.

The artist was born in 1961 in Yamanashi Prefecture.
Starting this piece with a motif of large red hands,
follow the line at your feet that leads toward the
building. It will bring you to a disc engraved with
words for “Hello” from around the world. The artist
created the piece with the intent, “The interaction
between people that starts from one small hand can
go on to create a rich, full and gentle space, and
culture. This is my prayer to that ideal.”

The artist was born in 1965 in Kochi Prefecture.
This piece is placed above the escalator that rises
out of the liberating gallery space. A tower, gradated
in blue and reaching up toward the blue sky. When
the artist first saw this building, she thought “This
design just popped into my head, and I wanted to
represent how people exchange messages using
electro-magnetic waves.” The piece seeks points of
contact with the artist’s unique style and concepts,
showing an awareness of its combination with the
entire building, appearance when seen from afar,
and the opposing elements of metal and the
delicate work performed by hand.

The artist was born in 1948 in Sendai City.
A piece that splits a 3.6 meter long, narrow stone
into four and places each section carefully in relation
to each other. Represents the beautiful meeting of a
male and female ship overcoming wild seas to be
together. In addition, two “drum stones” are placed
alongside, with thin air holes, and when hit they
produce either a low or high sound. The artist’s
desire is that you listen to these primordial sounds
while trying to hear the delicate and quiet voice of
the piece.

The artist was born in 1890 in Russia.
th
A representative sculptor of the 20 century, who
created this piece at the age of 47. It is a casting of a
wooden sculpture submitted to the “Paris
Exposition” held in the same year, and according to
the materials from that exhibition it represents a
French guardian deity about to send a ship off
overseas in search of rare wood, holding what looks
like a ship with rigging and sails. It was placed here
as a “messenger” to bring blessings to the port town
of Yokohama.

Plankton is responsible for around half of the
oxygen produced by plant life on Earth, meaning it
plays a vital role in maintaining the atmosphere of
our planet. This piece has been placed with the
desire that its comparative size and presence,
compared to the power possessed by something so
small, will lead those who see it to realize the size
and mystery of this vital presence that quietly
supports all life.

Hironori Katagiri was born in 1958 in Miyagi
Prefecture, while Kate Thomson was born in 1961 in
St Albans (England).
This piece is comprised of 4 parts, 2 that are shaped
like boats and 2 that are created from frames.
“Wave Ship 1 & 2”, taking the wind full in their sails
and cutting smoothly through the gentle waves, and
the two frame pieces, “Chain Link” and “Bollard”,
like pieces of land or reefs chiseled out by the
beating waves and wind. Each of these pieces also
functions as a bench where people can sit. The
piece is placed here with the strong desire that,
while playing around them, children will trace the
forms of the pieces directly with this hands and
bodies, and eventually take in the meanings held by
the piece through contact with it.

The artist was born in 1962 in Nagano.
Since a very young age, the artist has believed that,
personally, sculpture isn’t something to be used to
display a shape, but to find and give form to those
presences that cannot be seen with the eye. For this
piece, he sensed the “fluttering of the air = wind” in
his own heart, and combined together the images of
a yacht sail as it cuts across the ocean, a dolphin
jumping out of the waves, and a flower blooming in
the sea. While a sail is designed to collect the wind,
once billowing out it is essentially also becoming the
shape of the wind, and this piece is placed here with
the wish that it imparts the refreshing, dynamic
impression of that moment.

The artist was born in 1948 in Kobe City.
A fun and extremely interesting sculpture,
regardless of the angle it is viewed from, this piece
uses square stainless steel piping, piled up one after
the other with changes in form at each step, until
eventually they lose their original shape altogether.
“It blows.” refers, of course, to the blowing of the
wind, and this piece of art with a motif of the wind,
sky and clouds stands surrounded by trees in the
entrance plaza. Depending on the angle it is viewed
from, the bright yellow of the piece might be
glimpsed from between the trees, or the trees
themselves might form a backdrop to the piece,
bringing it a real sense of highlighted presence.

The artist was born in 1962 in Kyoto.
The natural light drawn in through the atrium and
the warm light passing through the paper art create a
“harmonious space,” invoking an awareness of the
spread of the cross point between the center of the
building and the atrium passageway.
Using original “Japanese paper,” the piece was
designed under the concept of three words with the
pronunciation “wa” in Japanese, with the meanings
“Japanese,” “Ring” and “Link”, creating an essentially
Japanese piece yet also most suited to the highly
international Yokohama port and its many foreign
visitors.
The atrium works as a circulatory device, not only
brining natural light into the building but also
operating as a ventilation shaft for the office floor,
and the artwork also represents the high
environmental performance that supports everyday
life, and a feeling of safety and reassurance in an
emergency.

The artist was born in 1957 in Aichi Prefecture.
This piece makes use of dichroic mirrors, providing a
strong visual impression of a company who
continues to lead the cutting edge as one of the top
manufacturers of vacuum thin film forming devices
in the world, completely drawing out their appeal
(size, light effects and phenomena). One with the
landscape, it forms a core that has real impact,
representing the history of technology and
development. The three filters are engraved with
information relating to “Shincron”, “Technology”
and “History,” and the illusory light they create
enthralls everyone who visits the square.

The artist was born in 1946 in Yokohama City,
Kanagawa Prefecture.
As a base for city research and development, the
corporate identity of “composition of an
environment where knowledge is created and made
use of,” “a contribution to the global development
of mutual trust and culture” and “realization of
happiness and feeling of growth for each and every
individual” and the concept of the piece itself,
“flying into the future,” invoke such elements as the
company’s corporate philosophy. This “identity
sign,” combining an entrance sign with a piece of
art, exists as public art. In addition, the Fuji Xerox
Art Space (an art gallery) can be found on the 1F of
the building.

The artist was born in 1969 in Israel. Now lives in
Amsterdam, Holland.
Everyone who visits the building will see a bronze
statue looking up at the sky. This piece is created
from the combination of a variety of elements from
the natural world, including fire, water, earth, wind
and metal. It can be said to be unified with nature, a
part of nature, and to also reflect nature. It’s a
sculpture that creates a free and natural
atmosphere, and looks into the future of tomorrow.
The front of the sculpture is golden to represent the
sun, while polishing is more reserved on the back,
to represent quiet. It is a sculpture that has
absorbed all of the elements of the natural world,
and a person who grows toward hope. This warm
and contemplative sculpture includes the desire
that many people will gather around it, and expand
their circle.

The artist was born in 1942 in Kanagawa Prefecture.
The motifs of the piece are two things intrinsically
linked with Yokohama, ships and trains. The city of
Yokohama has a rare and exceptional appeal, and it
is the refined culture and vista of the city that brings
people to it, and makes them love it. The train plays
the role of connecting the rail museum and
Yokohama together, while the ship connects the sea
and nature and buildings. The aim of art is to fuse
the people of the town with nature and create a
new appeal to Yokohama, and the value of its
existence. These pieces, which also function as
windbreaks and as benches, are colored blue to
represent the sky and sea of Yokohama, and red to
match the rose, the flower of the city. The
comparison between this warm and cold color is
marked, comfortable, and blends into the
surrounding greenery, creating a fun and relaxed
atmosphere.
