Reaching for rebate dollars … what it takes to maximize your energy incentive
They’re out there. Some states mandate their availability. And you might even be
helping to fund them with the dollars you pay each month on your utility bill. We’re
talking about utility company rebate incentives.
Each year utility companies allocate billions of dollars to be offered as incentives to
businesses for upgrading their lighting and equipment to more energy efficient
technologies. And while you probably realize the money is out there, you also realize
that there might be some challenges actually obtaining it. What does it take to get
through the rebate process?
It takes expertise
Where do you start? How do you uncover energy saving opportunities? Whether you are replacing one piece of equipment or
remodeling an entire store, our Hussmann team leverages in-depth knowledge of our equipment, as well as the Rebate
Management process, to ensure that you maximize the rebate funds available to you.
Unlike a 3rd party energy services provider that might just offer rebate assistance to work with OEMs and fill out the paperwork,
Hussmann is a one-stop shop for turnkey energy solutions and rebates. Hussmann engineers actually live with our products day
in, day out. They know the capabilities of each piece of equipment, the best applications for its use, how it operates, the features
it offers and how it works with other equipment in the store to maximize energy efficiency.
A Level 2 Audit conducted by the Hussmann Retail Optimization team offers a comprehensive diagnostic approach to identifying
energy conservation measures (ECMs) throughout your store. It includes a review of past energy consumption, a detailed
analysis of the store’s energy use, and recommendations regarding upgrade and replacement opportunities, which are then
matched with potential utility rebates to reduce your overall return on investment.
It takes time
The utility rebate process can be quite time consuming. There is research to be done, documentation to gather, applications to
file, pre and post inspections, red tape to get through, and follow up, follow up, follow up until the final check arrives. Your
internal staff just might not have the time to take on the cumbersome task of working through the entire rebate process. The
Hussmann Retail Optimization team can assist by gathering the right documentation, providing the necessary calculations and
specifications, coordinating any inspections, completing the required paperwork, and providing all follow up activities required to
ensure success so all that’s left for you to do is to review the information and sign the application.
It takes experience

The Situation
A supermarket owner had 148 linear feet of open, medium
temperature refrigerated cases with LED canopy lighting in a store.
The retailer sought to save energy by adding doors with LED mullion
lighting to close the medium temperature cases.
The Red Tape
Looking at local their utility company’s web site, the retailer assumed
the store would receive the utility’s perspective rebate of $38 per
linear foot and anticipated a rebate of $5,624. However, upon closer
examination of the fine print (the red tape), it was discovered that in
order to get the rebate, the lighting load after the retrofit could not be
greater than the lighting load before the retrofit. With existing LEDs
and no mullions, the project did not qualify for the rebate!

upgrade could be looked at in a different way. Applying for the rebate
