Term 2 Week 8 www.mendooran-c.school.nsw.edu.au 17th June 2013 CROSS COUNTRY - COOLAH KYLE HARTLEY OFF TO STATE!!!!! On Friday 14th June, Kyle Hartley and Carter Swan represented Mendooran Central School in the Regional Cross Country held at Coolah. Carter ran 15th out of 50 competitors in the Primary Section and only just missed out on a place at the State Carnival. Congratulations on a terrific effort! Kyle ran 6th out of 30 competitors in the Secondary Section. The track was 3kms long on a very wet dewy surface. Kyle ran the race in 12 minutes, 30 seconds and there was only 30 seconds difference between the top 6 competitors on the day. A very close finish. He is successful in attaining a place at the State Championships Carnival. Congratulations Kyle and good luck at State! This way we can ensure that the oval and running track are in a safe state for competing. Although we have had quite an interruption due to the weather, I still encourage all students to show full enthusiasm and house spirit by competing wherever possible and ensuring that there is plenty of cheering for team mates. Parents are reminded that you are also very welcome and we hope to see as many of you here as possible. There will be complimentary tea and coffee and some morning tea provided in the canteen for any parents and family members who come along. Jumpers With the very cold mornings we ask that parents please ensure that all jumpers are labelled clearly with your child’s name on it. Also, if your child has borrowed a jumper from the school clothing pool, please return it/them so that we can ensure that everyone can be kept warm and in uniform. Year 8 UNSW Excursion In the first week of Term 3 our Year 8 students will be attending an excursion to Sydney, fully funded by The University of New South Wales (UNSW). Mrs Waters who will be attending the excursion with the students has been doing a wonderful job of forging a partnership with UNSW to offer experiences to our students that open minds and opportunities in terms of their options after school. Work Experience A number of our Year 10 students are currently participating in Work Experience. This is another wonderful opportunity to help students decide on what career path they would (or would not) like to follow once they leave school. Thank you to the Staff and Employers for the extra time and effort that goes into making this a successful opportunity for our students. calendar Mon 17.6.13 ICAS Writing Assessment Tues 18.6.13 ICAS Spelling Assessment Wed 19.6.13 Athletics Carnival Cross Country Representatives Last week, Kyle Hartley and Carter Swan competed in the Regional Cross Country trials. Kindergarten is keeping a caterpillar alive and waiting for Mr Fluffy to form a cocoon, the boys in Ag are testing seed germination up the back and Shaylah is growing a great range of single celled organisms in trough water. There are experiments on the go everywhere! Just a few reminders. Years 9 & 10, don’t forget to get hold of a pop top from a drink bottle (Powerade, Juice or Pump water bottles are the go) and Years 7 & 8, don’t forget we are looking at rocks and crystals so if you have any cool or interesting rocks laying about bring them in and we will check them out in the lab. This weeks fun science fact! The largest flower in the world is called the Rafflesia. It is extremely rare, it’s more than 1 metre in diameter and grows in Malaysia. Unlike flowers that are pollinated by bees the Rafflesia is pollinated by flies and as a result smells like rotting meat! DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY Shaylah Taufa, Year 11 has produced design projects of a very high standard based on a Tongan theme. Her pride in her heritage is evident in her interpretation of the traditional Tongan art designs which she has faithfully reproduced. You can see her own individual flair displayed on the pieces pictured here. She is unafraid to experiment and the Design and Technology Curriculum encourages them to work in a variety of mediums and encourages creativity and innovation which Shayla has embraced. 4 T Newberry Mendooran Central School CWA COUNTRY OF STUDY 2013 – MOROCCO Each year the CWA selects a country of study to help develop a greater understanding of the people of our world.
