Superintendent’s Message
July/August 2016
by Paula Wright
August already! Where does the summer go? Here at CCSD we have been busy all
summer preparing for the 2016-2017 school year. I am excited to have all of the students return to school and to meet the new students who have moved to our district
over the summer! I hope that everyone has had the opportunity to enjoy some family time with a little fun and adventure along the way. The teachers and staff are anxious to hear all of the summer stories the students have to tell.
ESSA—One change that has occurred at the District level is the implementation of
ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) by the Federal Government. ESSA is replacing
the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. ESSA was passed by Congress in 2015 and
is a reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. This
update replaces the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and restores the balance between the role of states and the federal government in accountability for the success
of all children.
ESSA requires that states develop plans that address standards, assessments, school
and district accountability, and special help for struggling schools. The 2016-2017
school year will be a transition period, with full implementation of Iowa’s state plan
under ESSA in the 2017-2018 school year.
What we know is that ESSA provides flexibility in school interventions and supports
for states. CCSD will participate in the planning during this transition year. Please
visit the Department of Education, www.educateiowa.gov, for more information regarding the transition to ESSA.
TLC—CCSD is beginning our 2nd year of the TLC (Teacher Leadership & Compensation) program. The first goal of the program is aligned to “attracting and retaining effective teachers” in the field of education. The district made progress towards this goal by offering a minimum teaching salary of $33,500, providing intensive mentoring support from highly trained teacher leaders, and employing a minimum of 25% of our teaching staff in leadership positions. The district was able to
provide a minimum salary, 100% of teachers new to the district participated in mentoring with an 89% retention rate for all teachers, and we employed 23% of our
teachers in leadership positions. We have room for improvement, but it was a successful first year!!! Thanks to all of our district TEACHER LEADERS!
Back to School Activities—We have scheduled our annual “Back to School Night”
for Monday, August 22. All of the students and their families are encouraged to
come to school to meet teachers, find classrooms, get acquainted with schedules,
and see friends. We are looking forward to having the students back in our
buildings! The back to school schedule is located on page 7 of this newsletter.
Enjoy the rest of your summer, find some time to relax and have some fun!
Soon the routine of school and the cool temperatures of fall will be upon us.

Injury or Illness at School
Injury/illness – When a student becomes ill or is
injured at school, the school district will attempt to
notify the student's parents as soon as possible.
The school district, while not responsible for medical treatment of an ill or injured student, will have
employees present to administer emergency or minor first aid if possible. An ill or injured child will
be turned over to the care of the parents or qualified medical employees as quickly as possible. If
an emergency exists and the parent or alternate
cannot be reached, the student will be transported
to the local hospital by ambulance.
Only a doctor is qualified to make a medical diagnosis. If the nurse or other school official has reason to suspect a serious health problem, the parents
will be notified with the suggestion that the student
see a doctor.
Sending Students Home
Communicable Diseases
Students with a communicable disease will be allowed to attend school provided their presence does
not create a substantial risk of illness or transmission to other students or employees. The term
"communicable disease" will mean an infectious or
contagious disease spread from person to person, or
animal to person, or as defined by law.
A student strongly suspected of having a communicable disease or condition that may endanger the
health of others will be excluded from school. The
student may return to school with a signed release
from a doctor. These are some of the diseases, but
not limited to: conjunctivitis, chicken pox, fifth disease, impetigo, ringworm of the scalp, scabies, and
strep throat/scarletina/scarlet fever, whooping
cough.
Parents who discover a communicable disease at
home are asked to notify the school so precautionary measures can be taken.
Criteria considered when sending a student home:
 Fever 100 degrees or above.
 Vomiting or bleeding profusely.
 Subjective symptoms last longer than 30 minutes.
Student would rather lie down than eat lunch or go
to recess.
 Student is too uncomfortable or distracting to re-
main in classroom (scratching, coughing).
 Student is ill or injured and unable to do school
work.
 Student needs to see doctor.
 Student may be contagious.
If a child is being sent home parents will be notified by
either school personnel or the student. The 1st or 2nd
alternate will be called if the parent can not be reached.
If no adult caretaker can be reached, then the student
will remain in the nurse’s area, returned to class if able,
or will be transported to ER per ambulance if serious.
School employees WILL NOT transport sick or injured
students.
Absences
Absences – Please notify the school if your child is
absent for any reason. If your child misses school
for more than one week because of illness, please
have your child return with a note from your doctor.
We may also request a doctor’s note if your child
has frequent short absences for illness.
PE Excuses – Refer to your child’s handbook.
Recess – All students are expected to go outside for
recess and should dress for the weather. Fresh air,
sunshine, and exercise help fight off illnesses. Recess may be held indoors if the temperature or wind
chill is very low. Please refer to your child’s school
handbook on being excused from recess. We ask
your cooperation in keeping our school children
healthy. If you have questions, call your child’s
school.
Students will wait in the office for a parent to pick them
up if ill.

7th Grade Immunization Requirement
All students entering, advancing or transferring
into 7th grade and bor n on or after September 15,
2000, will need proof of an adolescent tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) booster immunization (called “Tdap”) for school in the fall.
Tdap is a booster vaccine for older children, adolescents, and adults. It safely protects against three dangerous diseases: whooping cough (also called pertussis), tetanus, and diphtheria.
Pertussis (also known as whooping cough) is a
contagious disease that causes violent coughing fits
that make it hard to breathe. It spreads easily when
someone with the disease coughs or sneezes. The
symptoms can last for months. Whooping cough is
particularly dangerous for young babies.
Tetanus—causes a severe, painful tightening
(spasms) of muscles, including of the jaw
(“lockjaw”), which can limit swallowing and breathing.
Diphtheria—is a throat infection that can lead to
breathing problems, paralysis, heart failure and death.
