Annual Report to the NSHE Board of Regents

Meeting the Mission
The University of Nevada, Reno continues its upward trend of attracting a record
number of students to campus. The University welcomed 18,227 undergraduate and
graduate students to campus this fall, reflecting a 1 percent increase over the fall 2011
enrollment of 18,004 students. The University also welcomed 185 Presidential Scholars
and 16 new National Merit Scholars for a total of 47 National Merit Scholars on campus.
The projected freshman retention rate is also rising from 78 to 79 percent.

Incorporated in 1981 the University of Nevada, Reno Foundation (Foundation) was
established to raise and manage funds that support the academic and administrative
programs of the University of Nevada, Reno, while respecting the philanthropic
intentions of its thousands of donors.
The Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism
and Center for Advanced Media Studies recently
underwent a $7.9 million renovation to ensure that
Reynolds School graduates have access
to cutting-edge technology in preparation for
communications careers in the digital age.
In 2012, the University celebrated the opening of the Nevada Living Learning Community and inaugurated President Marc A. Johnson,
Nevada’s 16th president. In addition, the Foundation continued its role in fundraising for the expansion of the University’s world-renowned
earthquake simulation lab. Thanks to a grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, the School of Journalism completed renovation of its
building to become a state-of-the-art, multi-media center for the University’s journalism students. The University of Nevada, Reno Foundation
met the Reynolds endowment challenge through raising $1.6 million of endowment funds to support ongoing technological upgrades in
the Reynolds School. The Foundation also received generous support from Jennifer and Philip Satre through the Community Foundation of
Western Nevada which provided $5 million for medical research, the College of Education and athletics.
Finally, U.S. News and World Report issued its annual “best colleges” rankings and the University of Nevada, Reno is again in the top tier of “best
national universities.” The rankings include a separate listing of the “top public schools” and the University is ranked at number 108. Schools
in the “best national universities” category offer a full range of undergraduate majors, masters and doctoral degrees and are committed to a
productive research program.
Fiduciary Responsibility
The Foundation takes its fiduciary responsibility quite seriously. The Board retained the services of Grant Thornton to perform an independent
audit of the Foundation, which is included in the Regents’ materials. The Foundation continues to be a good steward of its funds and is
pleased that the auditors provided an unqualified opinion of the financial statements and have not offered a management letter.

Gift Report
For the year ending June 30, 2012 (FY 12), the University of Nevada, Reno raised $22,458,643 in new cash, stocks, gifts-in-kind, and pledges.
This amount includes $21,720,017 raised through the Foundation, $304,035 through Athletics Association, University of Nevada (AAUN), and

$434,591 through the Board of Regents. In FY 11, the University
raised more than $19 million. The number of donors increased by 8 percent
