Explosion-proof fluorescent light fittings
history
SCHUCH - For more than 100 years a bright pioneer
SCHUCH is known as a specialist for problem solving in the lighting technology especially under extreme ambient conditions, for more than one century. SCHUCH
is continuously giving new impulses to the market based on the results of its own
intense R&D-activities
SCHUCH is frequently doing pioneer work in the field of “explosion-proof light fittings”
and proofs always anew its innovative energy in this challenging special field of lighting
technology. SCHUCH has influenced and promoted the development of today’s
explosion-proof fluorescent light fittings fundamentally, from the beginning and
therefore affected the corresponding standards significantly.
The name SCHUCH is intrinsically tied to this field of lighting technology.

ecg q 2439
The end-of-lifePhenomenon »EOL«
SCHUCH doing pioneer work
Lately there have been some damages (fires) with bi-pin fluorescent
lamps in explosion-proof light fittings. A potential cause for these
incidents can be found in the »Endof-life«-Effect (EOL) of the lamps. In
exceptional cases this can occur at
the end of the lifetime due to excessive surface temperatures at the
lamp sockets which can damage the
lamp holders so that they will lose
their protective function in regard to
the explosion-protection. (see the
report of the PTB in Braunschweig,
www.explosions-schutz.ptb.de /pruefung-plex-komp-langfeld.htm).
The problem of the »End-of-life«-Effect and its relevance for the explosion protection has
been recognized by SCHUCH - as a competent and experienced lighting manufacturer
- in good times.
Since December 1998 the explosion-proof ECG q 2439 which is installed in all SCHUCH
explosion-proof fluorescent light fittings for zone 1 comes with the »End-of-life«-Cut-off
according to CDV IEC 61347-2-3/A1.
The most recent generation of the SCHUCH explosion-proof ECG q 2439 comes with 2
EOL-Safety circuits on both ends of the lamps (corresponding to the draft standard
IEC 60079/7, dated 29. April 2005), ensuring the permanent monitoring
of the lamp circuits in regard to the EOL-Effect and
the safe cut-off in case of a failure.
1. Asymmetrischer Pulstest (Test 1)
The asymmetrical pulse-test simulates an EOL-lamp by
increasing the resistance asymmetrically by 15 kΩ for a
duration of 3 ms and a pause of 3 ms respectively 27 ms.
These disturbing pulses usually occurring at the end of
the lifetime, especially during the cold start will be
recognized by the ECG and the lamp-circuit is cut-off,
safely.
2. Asymmetrischer Leistungstest (Test 2)
The lamp operating voltage and therewith the output will
increase at the end of the lifetime of fluorescent lamps.
The asymmetrical output-test simulates directly the increase
of the output, resulting from the increase of the asymmetrical voltage in case of an EOL-situation.
This increase is continuously monitored and the affected
lamp circuit will be cut-off safely as soon as the limit of
10W will be exceeded.
After installing a new lamp the ECG and therewith
the light fitting will work properly again.
I.e. the lamp is being monitored continuously, a costintensive maintenance of the fluorescent lamp is not
necessary.

The highlights of explosion-proof fluorescent light fittings
With this most recent explosion-proof
ECG generation, SCHUCH again was
pioneer in this industry. With the PTBcertificate PTB 98ATEX1119 U, 2.
amendment, dated 24. January 2005
the SCHUCH explosion-proof ECG
q 2439 is the first explosion-proof
ECG worldwide, complying with the
newest insights in regard to the new
standards (draft standard IEC 60079-7
dated 29. April 2005).
As a matter of course this quality
product does offer further strong
advantages:
- Double-channel unit with separate
lamp-monitoring
- The explosion-proof ECG q 2439
fulfils the requirements of the overvoltage category III (standard = overvoltage category II)
- Increased noise suppression up to
300 MHz (standard = 30 MHz)
- Applicable for emergency light fit
tings connected to group- or central
battery systems, due to DC-detection
and change-over to DC-operation
with 1 lamp (version ZB).
As a specialist for light fittings SCHUCH does have one of the largest and
versatile/manifold lighting programs in the field of explosion-protection, worldwide. One of the important sections is our range of explosion-proof fluorescent light fittings with increased safety. In all
series within this product range (see pictures) our top-quality
explosion-proof ECG q 2439 with the most recent EOL-technique
is the »heart« of each individual light fitting.

60079-7
In addition all the explosion-proof fluorescent light fittings made
by SCHUCH do show a variety of further quality features, such as:
- Usage of top-quality materials with a lot of mechanical safety
built-in for the housings and covers
- Sturdy, safely working central-locking system with stainless steel hinges
- Isolating switch, user-friendly, positively-driven
optical switch indicator
