Vital impact

Last year was an exciting time for the BMH Foundation.

We hosted a VIP Open House for the new John W. Fisher

Heart Center and South Tower. At this event, we unveiled gifts of landscaping from the Sherman and Marjorie Zeigler Foundation, a sculpture which is being gifted by the Hamer D. and Phyllis C. Shafer Charitable Trust, and an original Jim Faulkner painting of Ball Memorial Hospital in the 1950s commissioned by the family of Dr. Maurice Schulhof. In addition, our new “Giving Wall” in the South Tower walkway was displayed to identify our donors who help make a vital impact on the health of the communities Ball Memorial Hospital and its affiliates serve.

The BMH Foundation continues to make a vital impact on the health of the community due in large part to the success of the Annual

Campaign. The 2009 campaign will kick off in October and will focus on Women & Children’s Services. As you will read in this Annual

Report, last year we proudly supported many important hospital projects including a pharmacy robot, a colonoscope for the Family Medicine

Residency, funding to help BMH achieve “Baby Friendly” status by the World Health Organization, mastectomy kits for breast surgery patients, and many other programs and services. Please consider making a donation early this year to help us continue to support projects which influence Ball Memorial Hospital.

As we reflect on our accomplishments of 2008, we thank all of our board members for the time they dedicate to the foundation and for providing leadership and insight for our future. We especially thank retired board member Donald “Rusty” Ross for his years of service on our board and we welcome Dr. Charles Sanders and Charles Sursa as new members.

We started 2009 with the merger of Cardinal Health System and Clarian Health Partners which we believe better positions BMH to provide preeminent care to our community. Even though as a health care system we have grown much larger, the vision for the Foundation remains the same… “a resource to Ball Memorial Hospital to enable it to expand with excellence its provisions of patient care, education and research.” Your support allows us to fulfill this vision for our community hospital—Ball Memorial.

2008 Annual Campaign Exceeds Goal

Despite difficult economic conditions, the Muncie community stepped forward and once again showed their overwhelming support for Ball Memorial Hospital and the BMH Foundation.

A goal of $225,000 was set last fall for the 2008 BMH Foundation Annual Campaign. At the conclusion of the campaign the

2008 Campaign Chair, Charlie Sursa, announced the campaign had raised more than

$413,000. a lot of help and an extraordinary group of volunteers who really made a difference. I just thank everyone involved for supporting a campaign and at the same time supporting one of our most important local resources,

Sursa made the announcement at an afternoon event attended by campaign volunteers and supporters of the BMH Foundation from throughout the community.

Foundation. “It was a perfect example of what the dedication and hard work of people in our community can accomplish.”

In addition to the leadership of Charlie Sursa as Campaign

Chair, the BMH Foundation also benefited from the support of Mike Galliher as Vice Chair,

Dr. Joseph Songer as Honorary

Donations provide the Most Updated Equipment for BMH Medical Education

The BMH Foundation has provided the Family Medicine Residency Department funding for a new colonoscope, once again demonstrating the Foundation’s dedication to helping BMH to provide the latest technological advancements for its patients.

The colonoscope, an instrument used in colonoscopy procedures, has been used for years to screen patients for colon cancer, but with the evolution of medical technology and the purchase of the updated instrument, residents and patients will both benefit, thanks to the continued efforts of the Foundation.

“The purchase of the colonoscope keeps the BMH Family Medicine

Residency updated with the newest technology, and strengthens

Ball Hospital’s position as one of the most advanced teaching facilities in the region,” said Stewart

Brown, MD, Program Director,

BMH Family Medicine Residency.

“With any medical instrument, it’s important to keep up with the most recent technology, to ensure that procedures are being performed to the greatest ability and care as possible.”

A colonoscopy is a procedure used to screen patients for colon cancer, but it is also used to detect other ailments, such as inflammatory bowel disease. The colonoscope has the ability to travel through the colon and large intestine to detect any polyps or other complications by using a light and biopsy monitor on one end. By using the new colonoscope during these procedures, not only will physicians have the ability to screen patients for cancer, but also it gives residents a unique learning opportunity.

“Patients of the Family Medicine

Residency Clinic will get a procedure when medically necessary at an affordable price,” said Dr.

Brown. “We have patients of all income levels here, but we feel by keeping procedure costs low, it really helps those individuals who would not otherwise be able to afford it.”

New pharmacy robot

Benefits Patients and Staff

In 1998 the Inpatient Pharmacy at Ball Memorial Hospital began using a robot as part of the process to fill medication orders. Ten years later, as technology has seen many advancements and improvements, the pharmacy robot at BMH received a significant upgrade, thanks to the help of the

BMH Foundation.

The old robot system would fill medication orders and place them in small trays. The trays would be placed on carts that would be used to distribute the medications from floor to floor. With the upgrade, the improved robot uses a more

The upgraded robot eliminates the cart system which translates to quieter hallways for patients.

“We’re very excited to have the new system up and running,” said

Kim Koss, Operations Manager,

BMH Inpatient Pharmacy. “With the help of the BMH Foundation, we can offer the most advanced safeguards to guarantee patients increased medication safety.”

Another advantage of the new system is that when the pharmacy receives an order for a special medication that is needed right away, fill the urgent medication order, then pick up right where it left off, all without missing a beat.

“Patient care is our biggest priority, and the robot system will allow us to serve our patients in the most efficient way possible,”

Koss added. “The system helps to eliminate errors when filling orders, and because of its delivery technique, allows for a quieter environment for our patients.”

As technology continues to evolve and change, the addition of devices such as the new pharmacy robot helps to place

Ball Memorial Hospital as one of the leaders in technological adaption and innovation.

Generous Gifts Mark the Opening of the New John W. Fisher Heart Center

As the John W. Fisher Heart Center inside the new South Tower opened early this year, several generous gifts were donated to support and welcome the Muncie community as they come through

Ball Hospital’s newest facility.

A painting, entitled, “Ball Memorial Hospital Circa 1952,” was commissioned by the Schulhof family in honor of the late Dr. Maurice

Schulhof, who became a Muncie physician in 1936. The painting, by local artist Jim Faulkner, depicts the former hospital building, Maria

Bingham Hall, the former medical education building and laundry facility, and stands approximately

36 inches high by 63 inches wide.

The Hamer D. and Phyllis C. Shafer

Charitable Trust is providing funding for a beautiful sculpture to be located in the dining atrium of the John W. Fisher Heart Center.

The sculpture, entitled “Hold

On,” depicts a family as it leaves the hospital, and is currently being created by local artist and

Yorktown resident, Steve Clark.

The sculpture will stand 10 feet tall by six and a half feet wide and three feet, five inches deep when complete this winter.

“I believe having these works of art in the new facility will facilitate a positive environment and ease the said Doreen Johnson, Chief Nursing Officer. “Art has a way of taking our minds away from stressful events, and the main goal is to create the most pleasant experience for patients as possible.”

Artwork was not the only item donated to help improve the building’s aesthetic appeal. Outdoor upgrades were also completed, allowing the new and fresh feeling of the recently constructed building to be continued in the lawn.

The Sherman and Marjorie Zeigler

Foundation donated landscaping this spring, offers warmth and comfort to visitors as they enter the building. The landscaping winds around the South Tower to a courtyard that offers an appealing view as visitors walk down the newly renovated medical mall from the main entrance. Patients and visitors can also walk out into the courtyard and around the building to enjoy the landscaping.

planned Giving

Leaves a Lasting Impact

More than a decade ago, the

Diamond Society: Advancing

Healthcare through Planned

Giving was formed by the BMH

Foundation to recognize the importance of planned giving and to display an appreciation for the benefactors who have made the important decision to leave a medical legacy.

In the new South Tower a recognition wall lists all members of the Diamond Society. To be included in the Diamond Society, all that is required is notification to the BMH Foundation that a planned gift has been arranged.

“Members of this community have a long history of generosity and have always displayed a desire to continue the legacy of the Ball Brothers,” said Jack Buckles, member of the

Planned Giving subcommittee for the BMH Foundation. “We will always work closely with benefactors and their legal and financial advisors to prepare planned gifts to the BMH

Foundation in a way that best suits each individual or family.”

Gifts can be designated to a specific area of health care endeared to the benefactor, or they can be given for “the area of greatest need.” Either way, the Foundation is always sure to carry out each benefactor’s desires.

Giving terms

Bequests: Creating a bequest is easily accomplished through a simple addition to your will, trust, life insurance policy or retirement plan. A gift to the

BMH Foundation may be stated as a percentage of your estate or from its residual. Bequests are revocable and may be changed as your circumstances change. Please consult us for appropriate wording for your bequest.

Gifts of Life Insurance: Gifts may be made by transferring ownership and beneficiary designation of a policy to the BMH Foundation. Donors may continue to pay premiums (if any) to the Foundation or simply make the Foundation a beneficiary or a contingent beneficiary of an existing policy.

Gifts of Retirement Plan Assets: Gifts are made possible by naming the BMH Foundation as a primary beneficiary for all or part of your retirement plan. A specific sum or percent can be designated for the Foundation with the rest going to loved ones or the Foundation can be named as a contingent beneficiary for all or part of your retirement plan.

Gifts of Land or Property: A contribution of your residence, farm, or vacation home is a great way to make a significant gift to the BMH Foundation.

Gifts in Trust: Benefactors who wish to receive income during their lives while providing a significant gift to the Foundation at the same time should consider establishing a charitable remainder annuity trust or a charitable remainder unitrust.
