Introduction of systems analysis concepts and methodologies for information system design and development. System development projects will be required. Prerequisites Junior standing; ACCT 203, ACCT 204; DSCI 232; MATH 104 or 250 Required Text and Course Materials Business Driven Information Systems, 4th Edition, Baltzan, McGraw-Hill, 2014 (ISBN: 9780073376899) Learning Goals COMMUNICATION SKILLS Students will become versed in the concepts of information systems including basic computer concepts, terminology, and database concepts. Students will also learn to communicate and discuss technology in the context of a business environment. QUANTITATIVE FLUENCY Students will gain basic computer knowledge in addition to experience and training with Microsoft Access which they will use to relate technology to business scenarios to facilitate information gathering for business decision making. GLOBAL AND CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY Throughout the course, students will gain an understanding of the responsibility and ethics that comes with management of and access to business information systems. Current ethical issues will be discussed along with corporate responsibility of those issues in relation to corporate policy and governance. INTELLECTUAL INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY An understanding of database concepts and how technology facilitates business process will give the student the ability to solve structured business problems. Emerging technologies will also be discussed and how they can enhance existing business processes further. SYNTHESIS Students will understand the basics of database systems and how technology facilitates business process in order to understand how to develop, evaluate, implement, and improve management information systems. Coursework CONCEPT EXAMS - Exams will be multiple formats including multiple choice, short answer, etc and pull material from the lectures and book. SOFTWARE EXAMS – Software exams will test your proficiency in Microsoft Access and understanding of database concepts, covering the functionality introduced in software lab work throughout the semester. Students are allowed to miss 4 days of class without penalty. Each session of class missed after 4 days of absences will results in 5 points of the student’s final grade being deducted. A portion of the material in the class is not in the book and cannot be covered outside of class. For special exceptions, please see the professor when extenuating circumstances apply. Quizzes and Lab Work Quizzes take place at the beginning of class and last approximately 15 minutes. Quizzes are due at the end of these 15 minutes and will not be accepted afterward. Lab work is due by the end of the class and is graded on a PASS/FAIL basis in order to grade participation. As a result, my office hours are by appointment because I am not typically on campus. However, if you need to reach me, I pay close attention to my email and phone during business hours. Miscellaneous Policies All policies may be adjusted at any time at the professor’s discretion The professor will try to maintain the class schedule and objectives, but may need to make adjustments. No food or drinks allowed in the lab. Surprise extra credit events might happen. Use of the lab computers is prohibited during class, unless instructed by the professor. Each of the lab computers is equipped with activity monitoring software, which links the student’s computer (screen and all) to the professor’s at the front of the class. The professor will use this software to monitor lab computer usage and reserves the right to publicly display any lab computer’s screen at any time to the rest of the class. The professor also reserves the right to take control over any lab computer using this software at any time during class.
