Topics: 0. Review of Mathematical Preliminaries I. Hilbert Spaces II. Banach Spaces III. Bounded Linear Operators IV. The Spectral Theory of Compact Operators V. Fredholm Theory VI. Distributions Prerequisites: Required Course Text: M. Reed and B. Simon, Functional Analysis - Vol. I of Introduction to Mathematical Physics. Recommended Course Texts: P. Lax, Introduction to Functional Analysis. W. Rudin, Functional Analysis. K. Yosida, Functional Analysis. Grading: The course will be graded on (roughly) tri-weekly homework assignments (75%) and an individual project (25%) to be handed in at the end of the semester. Scheduling and Final Project Due Date: Holidays for the Spring 2016 fall on January 18, March 14-18 and March 25. The final day of classes is Wednesday, April 28. The project will be due on Friday, May 6 at 11 AM, which would be when the final exam for the course would end.
