FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM: WITNESSES TO FREEDOM, JUNE 21-JULY 4
During the Fortnight, our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs
who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power. In the secular
calendar, we anticipate that the U.S. Supreme Court will rule at some point
during the Fortnight (likely around June 27) on seven cases brought by religious
non-profit entities. Resources for the Fortnight for Freedom including videos,
“Witnesses to Freedom” one page stories, a parish guide to celebrating the
Fortnight and more can be found at: www.Fortnight4Freedom.org . Additional
resources are listed below and others will be sent via email to the parishes of the
diocese.
The materials below are available through the website
www.Fortnight4Freedom.org, so please feel free to distribute or communicate to
your parishioners in your bulletin.
1. *NEW* video on The Right to Religious Freedom (explaining Church teaching
on religious freedom from Dignitatis Humanae and highlighting current
challenges to religious freedom, including the HHS mandate and global religious
persecution) and Video Discussion Guide (Link to other videos)
2. *NEW* Fourteen “Witnesses to Freedom” (one-pagers on individual witnesses
to the faith from here in the U.S. and around the world, including St. Edith Stein,
Bl. Oscar Romero, the Coptic Christian martyrs, and the Little Sisters of the Poor)
3. Parish Guide to celebrating the Fortnight (including several suggestions)
4. A series of examples of Threats to Religious Liberty in the U.S.
5. A series of examples of International Religious Freedom issues

YEAR OF MERCY DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE, AUGUST 23RD-25TH, 2016
Bishop John cordially invites you to the Diocesan Pilgrimage for the Year of
Mercy. The pilgrimage will take you to the three Marian Shrines of Wisconsin:
The Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Champion, the Basilica of the National
Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians at Holy Hill in Hubertus and the Shrine of Our
Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse. See insert and itinerary for more details.

Bishop Doerfler
August 23: The Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help stands
humbly, yet majestically, in a quiet and beautiful spot of
rural northeast Wisconsin. Known as "The Chapel" by the
local inhabitants, The Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help is
built directly over the site where Mary, Queen of Heaven,
appeared to Adele Brise, a young Belgian immigrant, in
October of 1859, one year after the Marian apparitions
occurred at Lourdes, France. For over 150 years, the
faithful have come to this hallowed site seeking the
intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Marian
apparition at the Shrine was granted official Church
approval on December 8, 2010.
Overnight Menomonee Falls
August 24: More than 500,000 people from all over the
world visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Help
of Christians at Holy Hill each year. Situated on 435
beautiful acres outside of Milwaukee, Holy Hill was
declared a Shrine with "Portiuncula Privilege" by Pope Leo
XIII in 1903. As a result of the increasing number of
pilgrims, the Discalced Carmelite Friars from Bavaria were
invited to staff the Shrine in 1906. On November 19, 2006,
the Shrine was elevated to the status of Basilica.
Overnight La Crosse
August 25: Nestled amid the beautiful natural setting of
southwest Wisconsin, the Shrine of Our Lady of
Guadalupe serves the spiritual needs of those who suffer
poverty in body and soul. It is a place of ceaseless prayer
for the corporal and spiritual welfare of God's children,
especially those most in need.
Faithful to the message of the Blessed Virgin Mary through
her appearances on the American continent in 1531 and
funded entirely by private donations, the Shrine of Our
Lady of Guadalupe includes a Pilgrim Center with cafe and
gift shop, Mother of Good Counsel Votive Candle Chapel,
Memorial to the Unborn, Meditation Trail, numerous
devotional areas, and the magnificent Shrine Church.
