KETTLE MORAINE SCHOOL DISTRICT COMMUNICATOR a community publication| www.kmsd.edu| spring 2015 Pardon our Construction Phase 1 of Referendum-Related Construction is underway We are excited to be making progress in our work to enhance all six school district buildings through support from the taxpayer-approved facilities and technology referendum. In line with community survey responses, the District is making improvements as soon as possible. Schematic designs were finalized in early fall and design documents were completed and shared with contractors this winter. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held earlier this month to kick off construction for the new entrances being built at Kettle Moraine Middle School, Dousman Elementary School and Wales Elementary School. Some segregated construction at the high school is also underway, facilitating the domino effect of expanding and relocating the art department. The majority of the work will occur this summer with demolition and construction occurring in all school buildings. While the four elementary buildings and Middle School will be closed for the summer, the High School will remain open. The District’s Summer INSIDE: Kettle Moraine Named Best Community for Music Education Kids Teaching Kids Academy will run a full program, hosted entirely at the High School building in Wales. Regular construction hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Hours and days may be extended as needed to remain on schedule and as allowed by the village, town or city ordinances. You can follow our construction progress on the District website at www. kmsd.edu/construction. There you will find weekly construction updates, renderings of the new construction and spaces, frequently asked questions, photos and more. You can also OPT-IN to the Construction category to have weekly updates sent directly to you. Simply visit www.kmsd.edu/optin. Trailblazer Hall of Fame Inductees Announced DISTRICT A MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT DEKLOTZ What a difference a year makes! On April 1, 2015 we celebrated the groundbreaking for the new controlled access entries at Dousman Elementary, Kettle Moraine Middle School, and Wales Elementary. (We are able to provide controlled access to our other buildings without adding new construction by reallocating existing space.) SUPERINTENDENT Patricia F. Deklotz, Ph.D. One year prior we waited anxiously to learn the results of the spring election. And then we celebrated the confidence and support demonstrated by you, our citizens, in passing the district’s $49.6 bond referendum. We were eager to develop the plans to address our capital maintenance needs, technology infrastructure, safety & security improvements, and renovated learning spaces. Today we are in the process of making those changes a reality. Next fall we will hold ribbon cutting ceremonies for all six buildings. All the renovations to our four elementary buildings will be completed. Our middle school will enjoy an expanded cafeteria commons and kitchen, in addition to a new entrance and office space. Our high school will appreciate a newly created Arts Suite in the space once occupied by the relocated KM Global. The remainder of the middle school and majority of the high school renovations will be completed prior to the 2016-17 school year. You can follow construction progress on the district website at www.kmsd.edu/construction. We also provide updates via Facebook so share our good news with friends or relatives. Follow us at https://www.facebook. com/kmdistrict. One year ago we were planning to open our newest charter school, the High School of Health Sciences. We were investigating how we could personalize learning for our educators to support them in personalizing learning for our students. We were desperate for improved technology infrastructure. One year later we have learned that the U.S. Department of Education has selected Kettle Moraine as one of nine districts in our country that they will feature as Future Ready districts. They will be doing a site visit this spring in order to produce a video that will share our story, nationwide. Your confidence in us is being recognized. This issue of the Communicator features articles highlighting some of the innovation that has caught the interest of individuals outside of our district. You will read how students are taking charge of their learning opportunities and how those opportunities are making a difference in their lives. Our schools are changing. It doesn’t look the same as it did when I went to school and we want you to know how we are changing. While we welcome all of our residents into our schools, not all have easy access to visit them. In order to give you a glimpse into our classrooms we have videos that will let you hear from students and staff, giving you an inside look at the rich learning that occurs each and every day. Please check them out on our website and share them with your friends. Remember that learning doesn’t only occur in our classrooms or during the regular school year. This year Summer Academy will be hosted entirely at the high school building in Wales. It offers a wide variety of learning opportunities for all ages. While parts of the high school will be restricted due to construction, the Summer Academy program will go on as the community expects. I hope you enjoy this issue of the Communicator and I welcome your help in celebrating our success. Together we are making a difference in the lives of our students. Thank you for your continuing support. The cube contains the speaker and controls taken from recycled computer speakers. Alex can connect his iPod to the speaker which then plays the sound. Knobs are present for adjustment as is an on-off switch. Alex created blueprints that were incredibly detailed and accurate. MAKERSPACE: A NEW WAY TO HELP STUDENTS LEARN Working off the philosophy that children are naturally creative if given the space and time, schools across the District are exploring Makerspaces. A Makerspace is a place for students to tinker, dream, imagine, create, test their ideas and own their learning. All KM elementary schools are in the process of implementing a Makerspace. Library Media Specialist are exploring different opportunities to integrate a more robust program next year. Students explore technology engineering skills with Little Bits, a kit that supplies general components commonly found in technology. 4 “Makerspace opportunities provide a bridge between classroom foundations and real world application by creating an environment for students to apply, generalize and enhance Kettle Moraine School District | www.kmsd.edu | A Community Publication spring 2015 math, science and literacy skills learned through traditional classroom learning opportunities,” said Jeremy Monday, Dousman Elementary principal. “Students will collaborate with teachers to set goals and a pace appropriate to their background knowledge, experiences and skill level.” There will be hands on materials like Legos and new learning tools like Little Bits, a kit that lets students invent with electronics and digital tools that include film, animation and coding. Watch for more as Makerspaces start to pop up next year at KM! Kids teaching kids at Magee Magee Elementary’s 4th and 5th-grade students have created their own version of Wikipedia, called Mageepedia to help other students learn about similar research topics. The 78 students research topics of their choice within the realm of their content areas. They create Google documents and presentations that are available to anyone on the internet. Approximately 500 entries are already on the Mageepedia website. http://bit.ly/1GOAUZ7. Mageepedia is a safe website that highlights kids teaching kids. The goal is to continue adding research entries onto the website for years to come. The more research the students do, the more resources are available to other young readers worldwide. Categories for research include animals, current events, history, nature, people, places, science and sports. Research questions range from “what is the most popular kind of dog breed and why?” to “why do so many people like Minecraft?” and “what was King Philip’s war?” “I think researching is useful because we get to research something while learning and still have fun. Also, we learn new vocabulary,” said Sierra Andrae, 5th-grade student at Magee. NAME/GRADE: Cassidy O’Neil PROJECT: How much of our brain do we use? Spindt, 11, was recognized for collecting more than 1,000 pairs of socks and 300 pairs of shoes through his program “Socks & Sole-diers.” He donated the shoes and socks to homeless veterans through the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans’ Initiative. Spindt, who was impacted by seeing a large number of homeless veterans on a trip to Washington D.C., has also organized drives at his church, elementary school, the American Legion and the local police, fire and sheriff departments. Now in its 20th year, the Prudential Financial Spirit of Community Awards is a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism in partnership with the National Association of Secondary Principals (NASSP). THREE NEW INDUCTEES ENTER TRAILBLAZER HALL OF FAME FUNDRAISING GOAL EXCEEDED FOR KMMS BEST BUDDIES CHAPTER At the end of February, community members put on a fundraising event to benefit Best Buddies Wisconsin. Their specific mission was to raise money to start a Best Buddies Chapter at Kettle Moraine Middle School with $5,000. What they ended up raising may surprise you. Best Buddies is a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities to create one-to-one friendships and other opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Karen and Walter Cain advanced the campaign in the community and were excited to reach their goal of $5,000. KM alumni, Marcia (Hensel) Bruflat, class of 1973; Michael L. Ellery, class of 1994; and Andy Hilts, class of 1993 will be inducted into the Laser Trailblazer Hall of Fame on Friday, May 1 in the High School West Gymnasium. The public is welcome to attend the induction ceremony at 8:45 a.m. with a reception and photo opportunity in the Laser Trailblazer Hall of Fame lobby near the West Gym. Special guests, past Laser Hall of Fame inductees and area dignitaries will also be in attendance. The Kettle Moraine School District honors the accomplishments and humanitarian efforts of former graduates through nomination, selection and induction into the Laser Trailblazer Hall of Fame. To be nominated, the candidate (living or deceased) must be a Kettle Moraine graduate of 10 years or more and has made, or is currently making, a significant contribution to society and their community. KM GLOBAL WILL HAVE A VISIT FROM C-SPAN AT THE END OF APRIL KM Global juniors, Megan Banaski and Nicole Bera, won an Honorable Mention for their entry in the C-SPAN 2015 StudentCam Competition. Out of nearly 2,300 entries, their documentary was 1 of 150 to receive an award. The C-SPAN challenge this year was to tell a story that demonstrates how a policy, law, or action by either the executive, legislative, or judicial branch has affected the community. The students spent many hours producing their documentary, “Same-Sex Marriage: The Controversy in Wisconsin”. The students’ win drew attention from C-SPAN who will be visiting KM Global at the end of April to give students a tour of the famous media bus and recognize the two girls in a small ceremony. 6 Kettle Moraine School District | www.kmsd.edu | A Community Publication spring 2015 “Much to our delight,” Karen wrote to employees of the District, “the entire campaign, including support from individual donations, family donations, raffle basket donations, donations from a number of retailers in Lake Country, Chubb Chicago and Milwaukee offices and an event at Revere’s Tavern will exceed $20,000 in total for this effort. We offer many thanks to all that did so, as well as to those who attended the event to offer support.” Kettle Moraine High School already has a successful Best Buddies program and influenced the success at the Middle School level. Parents and students in HS have said the program is truly beneficial for both mainstream education students and those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Cains said the benefit is clear and they feel absolute joy knowing that they live in a community that will come together in support of worthy missions. COMMUNITY CONSTRUCTION UPDATE Work moves forward While our technology infrastructure work is complete, the capital maintenance, safety and security, and renovated space work is just now beginning. After completing months of design specifications, drawings, estimating, and the competitive bid process phase one of construction has begun. To view weekly updates on constrcution progress, visit www.kmsd. edu/construction. To receive the weekly updates via email or text, visit www.kmsd.edu/optin and select the construction category. NEW Traffic Patterns As we move forward with our referendum-related construction work, some schools’ traffic patterns will be impacted. Please take time to carefully examine the new traffic pattern map for your school. The goal of the temporary traffic patterns are to reduce congestion and enhance safety while parents, buses, students and staff travel through construction areas. If you have questions about your school’s temporary construction traffic pattern, please contact the building principal. Construction crews and building staff will help guide parents and buses to reduce confusion and help everyone learn the altered routes for drop off and pick up. Thank you for your patience as we continue work to improve all six of our school buildings through the taxpayerapproved referendum.
