iust one woid: bears.A recentdrought
had dried up much of the bears'food
supply.Now theseanimalswere looking for food near human sites.Before
the summerwas over,two girls would
learn just how fearsomehungrv bears
could be.

Jennifer Corraleswas the first
victim.On Jul!' 13eight-year-old
Corraleswas camping out on Mount
Lemmon. She had come with her Girl

The bear had ripped the tear duct in
her eye.lts clarvshad cut her face.
StiU,she was lr.rcky.The damagecould
have been much worse.

and FishDepartmentmade plans to
trap the bearand move it to a different
mountain. Officialssaidit had become
t o o b o l d . l h e s a m eb e a rh a d r e c e n t l y
gone into a cabin in searchof food. It
had alsobeen seentearinginto an
outdoor refrigerator.Officials lvere sure
it wasthe samebear.A scaron its back

But this was not the only bear on
Mount Lemmon. Therewere others,
and most of them were hungrv too.
Everyday the bearsscouredthe rvoods
searchingfor food. Somefound trash
left by carelesscampers.A ferv prolvled
around cabinswhere people lived.
One woman who lived on the
mountain felt sorry for the bears,She
beganleaving food for them on her
back doorstep.She meant well, but
she really iust added to the problem.
As the bearsbecameusedto taking
people'sfood, they lost their fear of
humans.That made them more
dangeroustnan evet.

Knochelwas getting readyto camP
out on Mount Lemmon. Knochelwas
part of a 4-H group from Pima County.
The group had plans to camp at
OrganizationRidge.This wasa popular
campgroundon the mountain.
Knochel'sgroup had 71 children and
11 adults.Therewerealso 14 counselors,one of ivhom rvasKnochel.
e On the night of Jul.v24, Knochel
was on the mountain. It was dark
when she and the othels went to bed.
Knochel was alone in her tent, but she

back off. Instead, it began ripping at

Knochel shouted as blood poured
from her wounds.

that didn't seem to help, either. The
bear kept on attacking her.

chaperone fired a bullet into the
ground, sure that such a loud noise
rvould scare the creature off, but the
bear hardlv seemedto hear the blast.
