TEACHER OF MATHEMATICS Further Details UWC Atlantic College is a founding member of a global education movement based upon the ideas of Kurt Hahn. The College’s curriculum is on the mission, ethos and values of the United World Colleges. Students engage in a full programme of academic and co-curricular service and activities, and are encouraged to make links between conceptual thought and experiential learning. With effect from August 2016, we are looking for a suitably qualified Mathematics Teacher to teach International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and IGCSE Mathematics. The successful applicant will work in a department of six Mathematics teachers. The successful applicant should have a recognised teaching qualification and the ability to teach IGCSE level, the IB Higher Level, IB Standard Level, Standard Level [Studies] and Further Maths courses. In addition they may be asked to offer mathematics support to a range of different learners. Experience of IB teaching would be an advantage but what is most important is the ability to teach mathematics well and with a passion. Candidates should have demonstrable enthusiasm, excellent pedagogical practice and detailed subject understanding. The IB Diploma is a subject group award so all students will be taking mother tongue literature, a first foreign language, a humanities subject, a science and Theory of Knowledge in addition to Mathematics. The pre-Diploma programme offers students the chance to study Cambridge IGCSEs in one year. In an intake of 180 IB Diploma students, approximately 50 do Higher Level Maths with a lecture/ tutorial system, 80 do Standard Level Maths with 5 classes and 50 do Standard Level Maths Studies with 4 classes. Class sizes vary but rarely contain more than twenty students. The normal full time academic teaching timetable is currently between eighteen and twenty hours per week, comprising a mix of Higher and Standard Level classes. Higher Level classes meet for 240 minutes per week, Standard Level classes meet for 150 minutes per week and IGCSE classes for 300 minutes per week. It is the practice of the Mathematics Faculty for a teacher to be responsible for teaching each of their classes for the whole two year period of the IB Diploma. Around 6 students choose to write their extended essays in Mathematics each year, and the teacher appointed would be expected to take part in supervision and have an understanding of research skills. The Atlantic pre-Diploma is a one year initiative which offers a UWC experience to 15 – 16 year olds. The programme consists of Cambridge IGCSEs and a co-curricular programme of environmental education and outdoor adventure leadership, including the Duke of Edinburgh award. Students are able to sit either IGCSE Maths and International Maths and the successful applicant may be required to teach both. The style of teaching has to make full allowance for the fact that our students, aged 15 – 19 years old, come from different educational systems and different cultures with different experiences of Mathematics. The diversity, richness of experience, culture and background is a resource and seen as a strength in this college. UWC Atlantic College has an extensive co-curricular programme of community service, activities, Atlantic Diploma periods and project week. The students are involved in a range of commitments, from outdoor education, sustainability and social justice to intercultural understanding and global issues. It is essential that the successful applicant participates in these activities, including a willingness to help and lead aspects of the broader curriculum. All teachers take on a tutorial role and will typically be responsible for supporting approximately 10 tutees. The college operates on a semester system. The Autumn Term ends in early December and the Spring Term runs from early January to late May. Conditions of Service Core Working Hours: Approximately 18 hours of academic contact per week, six hours of community service and activities per week plus personal tutor duties, extended essay supervision, meeting participation and faculty duties as required. However, working hours are subject to variation and review according to the needs of the college. Salary: On a scale ranging from £23,496 – £39,761 per annum. The salary offered to the successful candidate will be in line with this salary scale and dependent on the individuals experience and qualifications. Verification of identity and educational and professional qualifications. The receipt of a satisfactory Enhanced Check for Regulated Activity (which includes a Barred List check) from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
