This course will look at the aspects of “hospitality” in Japanese society from the view point of gender. The objective
of this course is to understand the advantages and disadvantages of Japanese hospitality culture by raising some
examples in contemporary Japanese society. The main topic of discussion is how performing hospitality effects on
one's gender identity and how it influences the relationship of the couples and the relationship of the workers at
workplace in contemporary Japan.
You are expected to do as follows,
・explore the difference and the similarity of commercial hospitality and non-commercial hospitality.
・understand who is performing hospitality and where and how it is performed in contemporary Japan.
・compare the marriage and love in Japanese society and those in other societies.
・propose the ways of solving the problems of harassment at workplace and those of violence at home in Japan.
・understand the situation of Japanese women in Japan.
・explore the effects of gender stereotype in the heterosexual context on sexual minorities in Japanese society.
Students are expected to do as follows,
・understand the basics of the essay writing.
・write an essay by group of three to four people in English. Essay should be longer than 4000 words without
including the front sheet, footnotes and references.
・discuss some issues related to the theme of the essay by group in depth in English.
・search books and articles to write an essay.
・arrange a lots of information to make one cohesive argument.
・have a critical mind set and make a logical argument using information.

Week 5 : Review of the literature search and how to write a summary
Week 6 : Grouping and ice breaking

Week 9 : Making the outline of the essay
Week 10 : Review of the essay outline
Week 11 : Some rules of essay writing
Week 12 : Some notes for presentation
Week 13 : Presentation
Week 14 : Review and reflection
Week 15: Final check and Submission of the essay
Students are required to,
・search and read books, write essays, do some researches if possible, prepare for the presentation and
assignments outside class.
・attend group meetings with the lecturer at least twice, one in the middle of research planning and another in the
middle of making the essay outline.
Grading
System
Essay writing 40%, Assignments 20%, Presentation 20%, Active participation 20%
Active participation includes the attendance in group discussion and group meetings with the lecturer and the
submission of the communication papers.

This course is suitable for those who want to gain the basic academic skills for essay writing in English especially
in the field of social studies.
Those who are not in the field of social studies are also welcomed to attend this class.
Each student is required to have a commitment in team work, patience and responsibility to complete an academic
essay.
It is strongly recommended for students to make a opportunity to communicate each other to exchange opinions
regularly outside class.
This course is suitable for those of good English fluency in writing, listening and speaking.
