Please handle and keep the packaging intact until the moment of the installation. Actuators must be stored in a clean, cool, dry and temperature controlled area. The unit shall be stored with the cover installed. Precautions shall be taken to prevent condensation inside the actuator. The actuators shall be stored off the floor on suitable pallets and must be covered with unsealed box allowing side and bottom ventilation. If the actuator is mechanically installed but waiting for electrical connections, please ensure suitably rated cable glands or cable entry blanking plugs are fitted. If there is insufficient external temperature and humidity control, internal heaters must be installed and energized to protect the unit against condensation from extreme temperature variations. In order to verify the condition of the actuator a visual inspection, before the installation, is recommended. WARNING: before performing any maintenance on the actuator, always make sure to shut off the power supply first. Failure to shut off the power could cause damage to the actuator. WARNING: make sure to connect the power supply to the proper terminals as indicated on the wiring label. Verify the actuator nameplate to ensure correct model number, torque, operating speed, voltage and enclosure type before installation or use. WARNING: Valbia electric actuators may be mounted in many positions, however, we do not suggest using it positioned upside-down and with the cable glands positioned upright, since it cannot guarantee a perfect wiring tightness. If the actuator is mechanically installed but waiting for electrical connections, please ensure that suitable cable entry blanking plugs are fitted. WARNING: please ensure suitably rated cable glands and protection plug are used, according to IP protection rating. Seal properly the cable glands. Make sure that the cable glands are correctly tightened. Warranty is voided if this warning is not respected. WARNING: if the device is used not respecting the manufacturer specifications, the provided protection may be impaired. The connection should be done directly into the internal part of the actuator, by mounting suitable connectors in the lower enclosure entries “C” where a cable, properly sized and rated, should be pushed through. It is then necessary to open the upper cover “A” in order to locate the terminal block “F” and the correct electronic supply (Paragraph 6.1). The terminal block “F” is removable for easier wiring. WARNING: shut down the power supply voltage before opening the upper cover. WARNING: please pay attention during the wiring and setting phases in order to avoid fluids or other substance from getting on or around any electronic components. Before assembling the upper cover please make sure that the o-ring is seated in the proper groove and there are no impediments that could compromised the enclosure sealing. 5.1 Features 4.0 Actuator Mounting The 86 Series actuators are supplied with an ISO5211 (DIN 3337) flange for the actuator mounting. It is mandatory that the actuator is firmly secured to a sturdy mounting bracket or directly mounted to the valves ISO mounting pad. High tensile bolts or studs with spring locking washers must be used. Flexibility in the bracket is not allowed and backlash or “play”, in the coupling, should be minimized. The actuator output shaft must be in line, (centered), with the valve shaft to avoid side-loading the shaft. It is important to verify that the output torque of the actuator is appropriate for the torque requirements of the valve and that the actuator duty cycle is appropriate for the intended application. In order to obtain a safe actuator sizing, it is recommended to use an actuator with a nominal torque 25% higher than the valve maximum torque. 1 Technical characteristics of Valbia electric actuators: • heaters: all 86 Series actuators are standard equipped with heaters to avoid condensation into the actuator due to the changes of the external environmental temperature (Paragraph 6.4); • torque limiter: Valbia electric actuators contain an overload protection device. Exceeding the maximum rated torque may cause the overload protection switch to temporally remove power to the motor and cause it to stall. The actuator exceeding the maximum rated torque will try automatically three times to operate. If after the third attempt the result is negative, it will make a short rotation in the opposite direction in order to relieve the mechanical tension from the gear and it will stall. The torque limiter is a safety device, designed for infrequent use. Constant tripping of the limit torque may cause premature failures. The torque limiter intervention is signaled by a red color led light (Paragraph 6.5) and by the closure of the remote auxiliaries switches (Paragraph 6.2); • a safety system intervenes blocking the actuator in case the motor operates for a time longer than the allowable operation time value (the value depends on the actuator models). The excess of the allowable operation time value is advised by a red color LED (Paragraph 6.5) and by the closure of the remote signal’s auxiliary contact (Paragraph 6.2); • duty cycle: the electric actuator is designed to operate with a duty of 75% (or 50% in the models with 12Vac/dc power supply), related to the working time and to the nominal load. This parameter defines the rest times after an operation. The use of the actuator with a higher duty cycle or with a nominal temperature over 55°C (131°F) can cause premature failure of the electronic components and the improper intervention of the torque limiter. • “Captive” cover screws are permanently attached to the cover and simplify installation in awkward locations. 6.7 Actuator cover assembly (Fig.1) Fig.4 Control/logic board and particular of terminal blocks “G” and “R” 6.3 Potentiometer wirings (optional) (Fig.5) 6.6 Setting actuator stop positions (Fig.7) 7.0 Manual override Two limit switches operated by the cams on the output shaft determine the exact positions where the actuator will stop at each end of travel. The signal of opening or closing operation is reached when the blue cams push the auxiliary electromechanical limit switches installed on the control board. 7.1 VB030M / VB060M models 1. Turn off the Power; 2. Remove the upper cover of the actuator (Paragraph 6.0); 3. Remove terminal block “G” and “R”; 4. Make sure that the automated device, (for instance the valve) is in the “OPEN” position. For a more accurate and precise adjustment, use the manual override “H” (Paragraph 7.0); 5. Loosen the set screw in the cam 1, (black color), and rotate the cam until it makes contact with the limit switch POS2 (“click” of the electromechanical micro switch). Then tighten the set cam screws; 6. Loosen the set screw in the cam 3, (blue color), and rotate the cam until it makes contact with the limit switch FCU2 (“click” of the electromechanical micro switch). Then tighten the set cam screws; 7. Power on the actuator and carry out the closing operation (clockwise rotation); 8. Wait for the completion of the operation, then shut off the power supply; 9. Make sure that the automated device (for instance the valve) is in the “CLOSED” position. For a more accurate and precise adjustment, use the manual override “H”; 10. Loosen the set screw in the cam 2 (black color) and rotate the cam until it pushes the limit switch POS1. Then tighten the set cam screws; 11. Loosen the set screw in the cam 4 (blue color) and rotate the cam until it pushes the limit switch FCU1. Then tighten the set cam screws.; TERMINAL BLOCK “POT” The “G” terminal block is connected to two auxiliary limit switches (SPDT free contacts), which indicate the position of the actuator. The terminal block “G” is removable for easier wiring. Connect to the terminal block “G” between the following terminals: • “B” and “C” for closing. • “E” and “H” for opening. The opening or closing signal comes when the blue cams push the electromechanical limit switch. The cams adjustment procedure is described on Paragraph 6.6. NOTE: it is recommended to verify the alignment of the electromechanical limit switches with the open/close position by using a multimeter/tester. The “R” terminal block is connected to a free contact NO which provides the anomaly signal to the end user. The terminal block “R” is removable for easier wiring. 4 8.0 Fail-Safe Operation with battery backup (optional) In case the operator is encountering some difficulties in assembling the cover, it is recommended to: • Untighten the four dome indicator screws and remove the dome clear cover; • Remove the open/closed plastic insert; • Mount the cover making sure the shaft is properly positioned; • Reposition the open/closed plastic insert in its original position and the dome clear cover. Tighten the four screws. The procedure necessary to adjust the actuator stroke is the following: The actuator with potentiometer includes an extra terminal block “POT” (Fig.6) which grants the possibility to use the resistive information concerning the actuator position. Wiring instruction presented at Paragraph 10.0. 6.2 Auxiliary switches wirings (Fig.4) WARNING: the manual override must be used only after turning off the power or with power ON, but after the torque limiter intervention WARNING: do not operate the manual override while the actuator rotating. To restore the automatic operation of the actuator it is necessary to turn off the power, and move the selector “S” to the AUTO position. • After the wiring, proceed with assembling the cover “A”. Make sure to assemble the cover without damaging any electrical or mechanical components. • complete the closure of cover “A” by tightening the captive screws “B”. When, one of the above anomalies is detected, in order to recover the correct operation of the actuator, it is necessary to: • find the source of the anomaly; • fix the anomaly; • turn off the power for at least 10 seconds; • turn the power back on. WARNING: it is necessary to shut off the power supply for more than 10 sec to ensure the full capacitors’ discharge. The battery should be disconnected if power is removed for an extended period of time to prolong the life of the battery. The battery has an approximate life of two years depending on environment and usage. The battery should be replaced every two years. The actuators can be set to fail either to the clockwise (opening) or counter-clockwise position (closing) on loss of power For the actuators with battery back-up, it is possible to set up the actuator to automatically carry out one of the following actions in the event of power outage: • Opening: the in-progress/current operation is interrupted and the actuator initiates and completes the opening action. • Closing: the in-progress/current operation is interrupted and the actuator initiates and completes the closing action. • Completes the in progress operation: the motor continues the in progress action until it touches the travel stops/limit switches. The operation with the battery delayed when the actuator is in the full ”Open” or “closed” position. If the actuator is rotating during loss of power, the battery intervention is immediate. The battery backup intervention is automatically interrupted if the power comes back on. A red light (LED) mounted on the power supply board signals the charging level of the battery: • fast flashing, the battery is not connected to the power supply board or the battery is charging; • light on, the battery is not enough charged to guarantee a complete back-up operation; • light off, the battery is charged at the nominal value; The LED signal is reliable if the battery back-up has not been damaged. The VB030M and VB060M actuators are supplied with a square “Q” manual override. This is located on the bottom of the unit and it can be operated with a wrench. There are no selectors to switch from automatic to manual mode. BEFORE USING THE MANUAL OVERRIDE, ACTUATOR POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DISCONNECTED. Once the power supply has been disconnected, rotate the square “Q”: clockwise for opening operation and counterclockwise for closing; Q 9.0 Maintenance These electric actuators do not need any kind of maintenance. All rotating train components are permanently lubricated. Additional lubrication is not required in normal operation. For enclosure cleaning, use a light non aggressive detergent. In case of damages or operation issues, we suggest sending the actuators back to Valbia for inspection.
