Substitutes don’t get benefits—we make them happen! Being active in SSA is one of them!
Para and SAEOP Substitutes get pay raise after 59 days of substituting
Leann Russell sent out a notice on 2/19/2016, that the pay increase after working 60, 90 or 120 days would be reflected in the March
paychecks. Download the attached sheet for your records. This is the result of our negotiations during the summer. The district
agreed to increase the hourly rate 1.05% at 60 days, another 1.05% at 90, and another 1.05% at 120. The count would start at the beginning of the school year. This was to be an incentive in response to the substitute shortage. We hope this is true. From a list received in February, 77 Para’s worked over 60 days and approximately 23 SAEOP’s.
Check your pay stub and do the math. This is why we encourage everyone to copy their time sheets and keep records.
If you are not a member, this is a good reason to sign up and support your SSA efforts. Email & we’ll send a form.
Communications with our membership:
Seattle Substitute Association is on Facebook!
From Christina DeCarufel:
We are developing a Facebook group for the Seattle Substitute Association. The group is
closed for individual and group privacy.
 You can join by either searching for "Seattle Substitute Association" or by watching
your home email for an invite.
 We will post dates for meetings and trainings specifically for substitutes as well as documents such as
newsletters and the "Sub-Friendly Schools" nomination form.
 Please join so you can contribute by asking questions, making suggestions, or sharing information. https://www.facebook.com/groups/SeattleSubs/
SSA on MailChimp—a group email!
From Karin Engstrom
We have now over 900 home emails to send out bulletins. Our newsletter and post cards take 3-6 days for delivery through bulk mail, but the group email is swift. You’ve already experienced that with a postcard notice
that arrived on the date of our January meeting.
 We cannot send SSA newsletters through the district—so if you want to be informed, please send your personal email to: seattlesubs@gmail.com. We are still responding through the Gmail.
 SSA will be phasing out the paper mailings. Paul Hensley, our SEA Membership Coordinator, suggested that we send our paper newsletter out to only those who are not on our MailChimp home email list.
 The newsletter goes up on the SEA website and you will still receive announcements from the Substitute
Office before meetings with a link to RSVP.
Monthly Labor Management Meetings:
Our February meeting with the district was concerned with substitute shortage. Present from the district
were Clover Codd, Geoff Miller, Elaine Williams, Dana DeJarnett, and Leslyn Jones. Present from SSA were
Peter Henry, Jan Bowersox, Christina DeCarufel, Temple Robinson and Karin Engstrom.
 We presented some of our own data. Of the 1461 names of substitutes on the combined SEA-SPS lists,
966 are certificated, 372 are Para and 123 are SAEOP.
 An excel was created to find out the days worked for SAEOP and Para’s so that we could ensure they received their pay increases. Still working on the long list of Certs.
 An excel of district regions through zip codes of where substitutes lived to compare with unfilled substitute
jobs and a way to contact subs in an area.
 Dana DeJarnett sent the committee members a list of how many substitute jobs remained unfilled in each
school since the beginning of the year. This information is being analyzed by your SSA Board. Now the
sorting begins.
The good news is that HR is preparing for the AESOP sub assignment system for next year. For REAL!
