MOTORSPORT FOR CARS OF ALL AGES
A very warm welcome to our Halloween Race Meeting at Brands Hatch
Well, here we are already at our final race meeting of the
year. And what a year it has been for the CSCC! Hard to
believe that it was nearly eight months ago that our season
started, yet we are already at our final foray of 2015.
Record race entries, full grids of eclectic cars, great racing,
and above all a fantastic paddock atmosphere. What more
could we ask for?
My previous programme welcomes, have, I hope, already
paid our thanks to everyone involved in making this such
a terrific year. But here goes again, we understand that
without all of you we wouldn’t have been able to achieve
the level of success we have. I’m sure I speak for all the
committee and office staff when I say a big, heartfelt thanks
to all the marshals, (an extra round of applause to all of the
marshals who went above and beyond at our last Brands
meeting), officials, timekeepers, scrutineers, commentators,
and competitors who have contributed.

Thanks also
goes to our
friends at Triumph
Competition, MG,
Jaguar, Morgan
and Ferrari clubs,
who have also
provided exciting
grids at different
venues throughout
the season.
On a personal level my thanks go to my fellow committee
members, and all at CSCC HQ, who have made my first
year as Chairman a smooth, enjoyable, and satisfying one.
If I’ve missed off anyone who has contributed my sincere
apologies. Thank you all.
Now to get on with the racing! Apart from all our usual
series this is an exciting finale to our season with night races
on both Saturday and Sunday night, what a great way to
finish off this year. I hope to see most of you at our end of
year dinner/dance later in November, but if not then at the
Autosport Show or Race Retro. If not there, then on the grid
for the start of our 2016 season!
All that now remains is for me, as usual, to wish you all a
safe and enjoyable weekends racing.

The CSCC Modern Classics enjoyed
a busy September with back to back
race weekends at Donington Park and
Silverstone GP.
Donington
The series visit to Donington Park
witnessed the BMW of Tom Houlbrook
expertly driven to take a lights to flag
victory overall and in Class A by 9
seconds over the ever competitive pairing
of O’Neill & Szymanski and third place
deservedly going to Dan Wylie in his
BMW E46 M3.
The racing was as close as ever
throughout the field, out at the front the
pair of BMWs of Tom & Darren battled till
the pit stops and with them both serving
30s winners penalties it was clear to see
we would see a new Modern Classics
race winner for the season.
This time David Marcussen a previous Spa
Francorchamps winner in his BMW E36
M3 claimed his Modern Classics 2015
maiden win driving a brilliant, competitive
and consistent race to victory ahead of
O’Neill & Szymanski by only 3.8s, the
last place on the podium was claimed by
Darren Fielding chased closely to the flag
by Tom Houlbrook only to be decided by
0.400s at the finish line.

CSCC New Millennium and Dunlop Puma Cup
Welcome to the season finale of New Millennium’s inaugural
season; with over 70 registered cars it has become firmly
established in the CSCC race calendar. At the time of writing
over 20 cars are racing today, including newcomers to the
series Phillip Barret (Focus RS) and Steven Routledge (Ferrari 355
Challenge).
As well as New Millennium the grid today is also shared with
drivers from the Dunlop Puma Cup which is for cars running
to a tightly controlled specification which also makes for close
racing. If the track is wet or damp this will certainly suit the lower
powered cars.
This season Harris Irfan has brought his road legal Porsche 996
GT3 ‘Cobalt Blue’ to race at a number of New Millennium rounds,
writing about his exploits on a Pistonheads forum thread.
His first race at Rockingham ended during the pit stop having lost a
number of rear wheel nuts, thankfully disaster was averted.
Harris continues the story in his own words at the last New
Millennium round on the famous Silverstone GP circuit on the 12th of
September:
Cobalt Blue returned to active duty at Silverstone's GP circuit this
weekend. I’d dealt with most of the dreary logistical stuff the night
before so that I wouldn’t be panicking early the following morning.
That said, I still find the business of loading and manoeuvring trailers
to be a royal pain, especially on an inclined driveway but hobbitlike children can be surprisingly sturdy little helpers when threatened
with loss of electronic privileges.
Once again, my unfamiliarity with a new circuit meant that
qualifying should probably have been best conducted with my
Garmin for company (“turn left at the gravel trap”). I finish an
embarrassing 37th out of a packed field of 59 on the grid,

Davis (TVR) with a 60 second penalty and Bird/Hyde-AndrewsBird (BMW) and Houlbrook (BMW) both with a 30 second
penalty.
So expect a real mix-up during the pit stops and some late
charging in the final few laps before the chequered flag!

I was missing from quali. Adrenaline proves to be surprisingly helpful
in this regard. Somehow despite the swarm buzzing around me, no
contact is made and I focus on picking off a few cars every lap. The
little cars are annoyingly rapid through the tight direction changes of
Maggots and Becketts, but strong traction out of longer corners and
the long straights more than compensate.
By the time I’ve closed in on the E36 M3s and 944/968s, I seem
to have found my groove and my natural competition. The E92 M3
right at the front is in my class but alas the GT4-spec racer seems a
world away in terms of outright speed as do the quickest
finding myself staring at the back of a teeny tiny Smart Brabus and
alongside various Clio Cups and Fiestas. Never mind: today’s target
is successfully completing the full 40 minute race, finishing in one
piece, perhaps learning something and going home happy.
The GP circuit is fabulous. Wide and fast, accommodating 59 cars
of widely varying pace is doable. It must be amazing to do the
Britcar 24 Hour here. We’re racing on the same day as the Lotus
Cup, F3 Cup and Mono GP, and it’s the Lotus Cup that proves most
entertaining with a large number of cars barrelling into turn 1 at high
speed with not all of them emerging out the other side! I must try not
to think about the possibility of being swiped when 4-abreast. How I
wish Mezger GT3 prices were not quite so sky high!
And so to the formation lap: by the time row 19 of the grid enters
Luffield which is two corners before the main straight, the field is
already accelerating away. I guess that means it’s lights out on
the gantry ahead so bam! Pedal to the metal, hold my breath and
squeeze down the middle of the pack. By the braking zone for
Copse I’ve picked off a few which is to be expected given the
power differential and now I need to find the several seconds a lap
MOTORSPORT FOR CARS OF ALL AGES
E36 race cars – I’m sure driver differential has much to do with
that, but rather than focus on classifications I think the right thing to
do is focus on myself: how can I improve myself, what targets can I
realistically set from race to race, am I extracting the optimum from
myself and from my car? It still feels to me that my skills are a long
way from what they could be, and perhap what they once used
to be. Age and family I think has something to do with that: I have
no delusions of taking this up professionally so work and family
obligations take precedence over seat time.
Family members regularly express displeasure at this solo and
apparently dangerous activity, and access to a never-ending
fountain of cash is but a pleasant fantasy. Plus I think subconsciously
I’m holding back more than I used to: with age comes a healthy
aversion to risk. Maybe it’s the memories of three racers I knew in
Dubai who tragically died racing. In any case perhaps I’m looking
to get something different out of racing today than I did several
years ago. Maybe now it’s more about self improvement and a
sense of achievement than adrenaline rush and bragging rights,
although those undoubtedly are a pull for any normal male.
David from CSCC very kindly assists me at the mandatory pitstop
otherwise I might have been fumbling blindly for the harness forever,
and I’m back out to complete the
second half. 10 minutes from the end, my engine stutters through a
tight corner and I am reminded of the time I ran out of fuel on the
last lap of a race many years ago. The gauge is showing half full (I
make sure never to repeat the same mistake!) but the stutter gets worse
as the laps count down. Just where the engine should be zinging at
6000 revs, it cuts power and holds up the M3s and Porsches harrying
me from behind. Crap. I lose a few hard won places and in my
desperation manage to lock up the rear wheels with a clumsy heel
and toe and head inexorably to the scene of my impending doom...
the gravel trap. Thankfully, I regain control inches before. The lovely
chaps driving a gorgeous Porsche 928 aren’t quite so lucky and end
up beached like a whale at the same corner. I am extremely grateful
for the chequered flag a couple of laps later.
As I kill the ignition in the paddock, I can afford myself a quiet
moment of reflection. I am drenched in sweat and pong like a dead
animal. My fingers are slightly shaking. That was frickin’ amazing.
I’ve just completed the full 40 minutes, Cobalt felt beautifully set up,
and I’m more than satisfied with how far I’ve progressed today. Sure,
I could find more time - I’m still on the brakes too early and for too
long and I’m still too conservative in the faster corners.
When the results sheet materialises I’m somewhat surprised to
note I’m placed 45th out of 51 finishers. That doesn’t make much
sense to me. My best laptime places me firmly in the top 20 cars
and I think had been fairly consistent throughout, barring the last
10 minutes of temporary fuel starvation in some corners. I had
estimated making up around 10 places in total accounting for the
few places I lost at the end, and my pitstop had been a pretty good
one I would say. So I can only think of two possible reasons for the
lowly result: either somehow the receiver has failed to pick up one
lap from my transponder (the results show me 2 laps down on the
leader, although I recall being passed only once), or I am cognitively
biased only to remember the overtakes and not the occasions I am
overtaken.
Oh well, best not dwell on this and instead remind myself that I had
a great day as evidenced by the sticky ball of shredded Cup 2s dug
out from inside my wheel arches:
The competitors have been brilliant: friendly and helpful in the
paddock, they drove hard and avoided contact despite stampeding
into corners 3 or 4 at a time. It’s nice also that a number of them
approach me afterwards to acknowledge the many dogfights we
had. A couple of them even express how refreshing it is to see a
‘road’ car with number plates, carpets and A/C out there on the GP
circuit. Makes you feel all glowy inside...

Race 3 (40 Minutes with pit stop) Saturday
CSCC New Millennium and Dunlop Puma Cup
Donington Race Report
A combined grid alongside the CSCC Modern Classic series
made the trip to Donington on the 6th September, five of which
were previous New Millennium winners and would have to
serve an additional 30 seconds winners penalties in the race
itself.
First place after qualifying was Randaccio/Affleck (Lotus
Europa) nearly 4 seconds ahead of the rest of the field, with
Davis (TVR), Houlbrook (BMW M3), Wardle (Ginetta G50) and
Szymanski/O’Neill (BMW M3) covering the rest of the top 5
places.Note that quite a few of the drivers are registered for
both New Millennium (NM) and Modern Classics (MC) series.
At the start of the race it was Davis (TVR) who made a great
start to take the lead with Randaccio/Affleck (Lotus) falling back
to 5th place with the others holding their start positions. Davis
led the field pulling out a 7 second lead until his pit stop on
lap 12 which dropped him back to mid-field after taking his 30
second winners penalty. Wardle (Ginetta) took over the lead
from Davis and held it by 2-3 seconds through his pit stop until
lap 25 when a charging Randaccio/Affleck who had dropped
to 14th overall after their pit stop (and winners penalty) retook
the lead until the chequered flag and the overall race win and
first in NM class B.
Davis having dropped to midfield after his pit stop + winners
penalty climbed back up to finish 5th overall and 1st in New
Millennium class A. Wardle (Ginetta) with a fine drive made
the most of his penalty free pit stop to take 2nd place overall
and second in NM class B. Houlbrook (running today in MC)
finished 3rd overall and 1st in MC Class A. Sturges (Megane)
moved up from starting position of 21st to finish 16th overall
and 1st in NM class E. Other NM class winners were stalwarts
Grange/Hays (Mondeo ST) finishing 26th overall and 1st in
class C and Morgan/Edwards (Clio Cup) first in NM class D.
Silverstone GP Race Report
A huge amalgamated grid of 59 cars from New Millennium (NM),
Modern Classics (MC) and Dunlop Puma Cup made their way to
Silverstone for the rare opportunity to race on the fast and technically
demanding 3.66 mile Grand Prix circuit. Whilst the series were
racing on a combined grid they were racing for their individual
overall and class awards.
At the end of qualifying the first six places were taken by BMW
M3’s with the fastest being Houlbrook (MC Class A) by just 0.02
seconds ahead of Fielding (MC Class A) and regular NM racer
Bird/Hyde-Andrews-Bird. Davis (TVR Tuscan) broke the BMW
stranglehold to claim 7th slot for the race grid. Further down the
order Saunders/Spark (Ginetta G40) took 13th spot and headed
NM class D just ahead of Garner/Garner (Clio Cup) also in NM
class D. Marais/Compaan (Seat Leon) headed NM class E from
Sturges (Megane) who completed only a single lap before having to
retire the car from the meeting. Wardle (Ginetta G50) qualified in
27th place and 1st in NM class B whilst MacBean/Daniels (Ginetta
G40R) and Irfan (Porsche GT3) were building up speed on the
unfamiliar circuit (read article on the previous page).
On to the race itself which saw 57 cars take to the grid for a rolling
start. At the end of the 40 minutes frenetic racing it was Marcussen
(BMW M3) who took the spoils just under 4 seconds ahead of
O’Neill/Szymanski (BMW M3). Houlbrook (BMW M3) would
probably have won overall were it not for his 30 second winners
penalty and finished 4th. First New Millennium car was Davis (TVR
Tuscan) in 6th closely followed by father and son team of the Bird/
Hyde-Andrews-Bird both of which also had to serve their 30 second
winners penalty during their respective pit stops. Wardle (Ginetta
G50) would have had a great result were it not for the fact that he
just missed the pit stop window and had to suffer a 2 lap penalty as a
result which pushed him well down the order with first in NM class B
as a consolation. Saunders/Spark (Ginetta G40) managed to finish
2 places higher than their qualifying spot to take 1st in NM class D
and a fine 11th overall. Marais/Compaan (Seat Leon) claimed 1st
in NM class
E with 29th
overall going
some 2 seconds
faster than their
qualifying time.

The last time the CSCC hosted a night race was back in
2010 at Donington Park. Racing in darkness certainly
presents a different challenge to the drivers, many of whom
will never have raced before in these conditions. Rules
state that the drivers must illuminate their racing numbers,
have working indicators and headlights of course. Starting
positions on the grid are determined by the drivers best lap
time during qualifying this morning.

Race 7 (40 Minutes with pit stop) Sunday
CSCC Advantage Motorsport Future Classics
Nic Olson raced his Lotus Esprit (C) away
from pole position to take an early lead at
Oulton Park a few weeks back. On a clear
circuit Mark Chilton slipped away in his
Porsche 928 (Class A) by about a second
a lap until the pit window opened and Nic
came in for his mandatory pit-stop and 30
second success penalty. Mark promptly took
his pit stop shortly after but without having
earned a success penalty of his own exited
the pit 29 seconds ahead of Nic. Mark
managed to grow this gap for lap after lap
whilst both negotiated back markers to the
end of the race.
Mark crossed the line 43 seconds ahead of
Nic by the end of lap 20. Stephen ScottDunwoodie brought his Sierra Cosworth
(Class B) across the line 3rd less than a
second ahead of Tim Bates in his Porsche
911 SC. These two had been locked into a race long struggle
for 3rd and were never more than a few seconds apart for the
entire race.
Tony Maryon won the Porsche Transaxle class (G) in his 944
S2 and John Hammersley and Simon Taylor took class D in their
Vauxhall Astra GTE but only 3 seconds ahead of David Bryant
in his Toyota MR2. Nic and Stephen have brought their cars out
again for this last race of the season here at Brands Hatch but
Nic still has his success penalty to overcome if his wants to win.
David and John can also continue their race for class D honours.
If that’s not enough racing for you then wait until the night race
this evening where Nic is again testing himself as is David
Bryant.

CLASSIC SPORTS CAR CLUB
MOTORSPORT FOR CARS OF ALL AGES
Race 8 (40 Minutes with pit stop) Sunday
CSCC Swinging Sixties Groups 1 & 2
One last race for the Swinging Sixties this season. You have
provided fantastic grids, some excellent racing and pleased many
spectators along the way. If you add up the number of races you
have completed this year; take the number of laps, multiplied by
the length of those laps, I bet you have travelled over 400 miles
at racing pace. That is pretty impressive for those ‘classic cars’.
Racing in the dark, at Brands Hatch, is going to be a bit special.
I am sure you are going to cope very well, but please be careful!
RACE REPORT
It sounds a bit different and exciting all at the same time. I reckon
it’s rather like driving home from the pub when you are 18, but
hopefully with no-one coming the other way.
My warmest thanks to Vicki Cairns for her excellent race reports,
which just leaves me to do the poetic bit!
Have a great race and enjoy yourselves.
Chris Blewett, CSCC Swinging Sixties Driver Representative
1. Driver name(s) –
Tony Hunting
3. Car history, modifications and
power –
The BMW was a German club car
before David bought it from Tom Pead
who did some CSCC events I believe.
The Midget is one of Tim’s cars that
has a long racing history. Stripy is a
very competitive race car with the right
driver behind the wheel (Confusingly
‘Stripy’ doesn’t have a stripe on ’his’
bodywork, the name came from an
original plan to change his livery!).

4. Driver racing history
I’ve been with the CSCC since 2011,
although I supported Ian Everett and
Gary Makein in their BMW for a
number of years beforehand. I really
enjoy Mallory Park, it does seem to
work for me somehow. Great race
in David Cornwallis BMW a couple
of years ago and my best result yet
in Tim Cairns Midget at Mallory this
year. I also very much like Anglesey
(not so much the weather!) My scariest
race was at Silverstone when the
heavens opened and I couldn’t see a
thing.
5. Why you race with the CSCC? –
It is a good club with a friendly
atmosphere.

6. Favourite circuit, any future
racing aspirations –
Mallory followed by Anglesey. Dream
circuit, Spa. One day!! I am going to
build a race car of my own asap!
7. Personal details –
I run a classic car hire company based
in Suffolk (GT Classic Hire Ltd), we
hire E-Type, Austin Healey, TR6 and
the like. Been doing this for myself
for 5 years, running classic car hire
companies for others for some 15
years. We have recently moved to a
bigger property which will help in the
development of the company. I play
with the classic cars while my partner
Karen plays with the horses (between

GROUPS 1 & 2, OULTON PARK
26th SEPTEMBER 2015
As Oulton Park was a one-day Meeting, the
Swinging Sixties race was combined: Group
1 (for the smaller-engined cars) and Group 2
(for the larger cars) racing together.
Once again, the CSCC were able to arrange
a fine and sunny day for a full grid of cars
to enjoy. There were a few drivers out for
the first time this season and it was good
to see Ross Whittock in his smart Mini. This
car has previously been used for hillclimbs &
sprints and Ross learnt to drive in it! We also
welcomed Malcolm Mitton and Tim Philpott in
their very pretty Lotus Elan S4 for their first race
at Oulton Park. Sam and Simon Polley were
out in their 1500cc MG Midget, this being
the first time Sam had raced the car.
A few cars had problems in practice,
including Jon Crayston whose Lotus Elan
S4 had a timing chain come loose; he then
had a busy day making it ready to race. Joe
Henderson in his Triumph TR6 recorded good
times; but, he unfortunately cracked a brake
disc and was unable to take his place on the
grid. Chris and Oliver Petch also had work
to do, as they needed to replace the head
gasket on their TR5.
The race was in the very late afternoon, which
meant exiting Old Hall Bend and the Shell
Oils Hairpin directly into the low sun. At the
front of the grid, Pole position was taken by
the Ginetta G4 of Mark Halstead and Stuart
McPherson, with the Marcos of Iain Daniels
and Ben Gough alongside. Both these cars
had winners’ penalties
(the Halstead/
McPherson car 60
seconds and the
Daniels/Gough car
30 seconds).
From Group 1, the
first two cars on the
grid were Minis - the
first being that of the
Howells followed by
that of Tonge and
Winter (neither car
carrying a winner’s
penalty). The race got off to a clean start with
close racing between the first four cars. This
continued for several laps until the Marcos
began to suffer from the oil problem which
had beset it in practice, finally having to retire
on Lap 10 at the Pit Stop.
There were close races in both Groups for
the honours. In Group 1 the two Minis had
a race-long battle finally finishing with just 3
seconds between them, Matthew and Julian
Howell taking the win, earning themselves
a 30-second Penalty for today’s race. A
well-deserved third place went to Ian Everett
in the 2-litre BMW. The Group 2 leaders
also finished a few seconds apart with the
Ginetta of Halstead & McPherson ahead of
Dave McDonald in his TR6 who, in the final
laps, had been unable to hold off the Ginetta.
Martin Sledmore in the 4.7 litre Mustang had
a great drive from 13th on the grid to finish in
3rd place over all.
A few cars failed to finish:- Tony Clark in the
MGB had a gearbox problem, the two-car
team of Mike Hughes and Rob Cowing,
unfortunately, found the barrier after Cascades
and John Hutchison ended in the gravel at
Lodge Corner. There were, however, many
happy drivers - the pleasure of racing at Oulton
Park seems to have that effect! Mark Lister was
very pleased to record his first finish of the
season in his Austin Healey Sprite. It is always
a pleasure to see the Jaguar Mk 1 driven by
Roger Bowman on the track and he had an
excellent race; he said he had “good fun”
starting 23rd on the grid and working his way
up through the field to finish 13th, achieving
a class win and fastest lap. The Alfa Romeo
GT2000 of Gary Lyon had over-heating
problems, but he was happy to coax the car to
the finish - perhaps his “day-job” of designing
military vehicles was put to good use!?
Now we are at Brands Hatch for the end-ofseason finale - and hoping that, once again,
the weather will be kind and, despite it being
November, a great day will be had by all!

MOTORSPORT FOR CARS OF ALL AGES
Come and race with the Classic Sports Car Club
Race 8 (40 Minutes with pit stop) Sunday
CSCC Swinging Sixties Groups 1 & 2
No. Driver
CLASSIC SPORTS CAR CLUB
Where do I start?
We will go into more detail later in this guide,
but in brief you need: A race car, prepared with
safety equipment such as roll cage, harness,
extinguisher etc. Personal safety equipment,
including, helmet, race suit, gloves and boots
(plus we advise a Frontal Head Restraint device
such as a HANS device) An MSA Race National
B license Club membership and series (car)
registration
Why race a car, rather than sprint,
hillclimb or trackday?
All of the disciplines listed above involve driving
your car quickly, whether for fun (in the case of
a trackday), against the clock in speed events
(hillclimbs and sprints) or a race to the flag with
other competitors on the track at the same time
(racing). Racing side by side, wheel to wheel
is one of the most exhilarating things you can
do in life and relies on skill, tactics and trust in
your fellow competitors. A motor racing circuit is
usually a wide ribbon of tarmac where you may
need to use a variety of ‘lines’, not necessarily
the fastest racing line as a car you are trying to
overtake is occupying the space you desire; this
is where overtaking tactics come into play. It is
this close competition with other drivers and cars
that makes racing such an amazing experience.
Whether you are a racing novice or you have
experience with another racing club, you
shouldn’t need convincing that racing cars on
a track with other enthusiasts is one of the most
exciting pastimes you might ever do.
What makes the Classic Sports Car
Club different from other racing
clubs?
We are a club first and a business second. Our
committee is made up of experienced racers and
officials and ensures that we provide our club
members with the best possible racing experience
at sensible costs. We only run series, rather
than championships, where each round is an
individual event with no points, making the racing
slightly less serious (but no less competitive) and
no pressure to have to compete in every round.
The CSCC actively enforces strictly enforced
driving standards: no-one wants to spend money
on panel repairs. The club is beginner friendly,
with a new driver ‘buddy’ system to help you
through your first race meeting and over a
hundred novice drivers who started their racing
hobby with us. With the exception of the Special
Saloons and Modsports Series we have longer
40 minute or one hour races with a mandatory
pit stop and 30 minute qualifying/practice
sessions on the same day. Entries may be either
single drivers, two drivers sharing a single car
or a two car team (all at the same race entry
fee). An overall winners penalty helps reduce the
likelihood of the same car dominating at every
round. Freedom of choice when it comes to tyres
(from the MSA list 1A or 1B) and some other
modifications. We allow a “Taster” round where
the registration fee will be waived for the first
round.
How much will it cost?
Well, Motor Racing is never cheap, but the club
makes the track time you receive great value.
The initial equipment costs can be quite high
(car, preparation and personal safety equipment),
but once bought the ongoing costs can be very
reasonable. We have members who race on a
shoestring and may only compete in one or two
rounds a year, sleeping in their car/tent/van/
aunties house with no testing time, whilst other
members stay in hotels and have a race team to
look after them. We embrace every type of racer,
as long as they are here to have fun. If you have
been taking part in sprinting and hill climbing
then the costs to race are not too dissimilar once
you have actually bought the mandatory safety
equipment for yourself and your car and in fact
may work out cheaper per minute of tracktime.
The cheapest way of racing with us is to share
a car with a friend and so halving the costs.
Choose the CSCC race meetings which take
place nearest to you, drive your road legal car
to the circuit, qualify and race and drive home
again afterwards on the same day (or stay
overnight if you prefer)! Doing this may cost each
driver as little as £250 per event even taking
into account the race entry fee, petrol, a certain
amount of normal wear and a bacon roll or two.
Your costs with us amount to club membership,
series/car registration and then a race entry fee.
Choice of car and car
safety
Your choice of car is a very personal
one and is likely to come down to
budget, what you may already own
or what you are interested In. Most
choose to buy their car outright or
share the car with a friend (halving
the costs), but you can also rent
a racing car on a race by race
basis from a number of teams and
preparers that race with the CSCC.
Take a look at our different series and
their simple regulations to see where
a particular car may fit in. An existing race car
is usually the cheapest way of starting out, with
a selection of cars starting from just £2000.
Contact the CSCC club office who may be able
to advise you of a cars suitability and eligibility
and join the club to receive the club newsletters
that often contain cars for sale. Before thinking
of how to make a car go faster you must first
make sure it is safe for competition. The MSA
Blue Book (which you will receive as part of your
racing licence application) is your bible when it
comes to the mandatory safety requirements of
a racing car. In brief, to turn a road car into a
racing car you will need to fit a fire extinguisher,
racing seat, harness, roll cage, electrical cut off,
rain light, relevant stickers (including a novice
cross) and a transponder so that each racing
lap you complete is counted and timed. After
this it is generally accepted that improvements
to the brakes, suspension, cooling, tyres and
most importantly the drivers skills (!) should come
before increasing power.
Driver safety
In addition to the cars safety equipment you must
also invest in suitable fire proof clothing, again the
MSA Blue Book is your guide here. The CSCC
has a discount directory which is sent to members,
helping them to save money on equipment. As
a minimum you require a suitable MSA helmet,
FIA fireproof overalls, gloves and boots. It is
recommended that you also consider fireproof
underwear, a Frontal Head Restraint (FHR) such as
a HANS or Simpsons Hybrid and wrist restraints in
open cars. Once bought, many of these items will
last many years if well looked after.
Racing licence
To compete in a race you must hold a valid
racing licence. To get one of these is both fun
and straightforward. Visit the MSA website,
purchase a ‘Go Racing’ pack for £95, take a
medical, book an ‘ARDS’ course with a race
circuit where you take (and hopefully pass) a
practical and theory test and send off for your
license (first years licence fee included). Your
first racing licence will be a Race National B
which is fine for all of the CSCC UK rounds. To
be able to race with us in Belgium at our Spa
Summer Classic event requires a Race National
A licence; to get this requires you to gain six
race signatures, by successfully racing in different
events. A days marshalling also gains you a
signature, is well recommended and saves you
money. Alternatively, if you would like to get
involved in the action but don’t fancy racing
why not volunteer to marshal with us? It’s the
closest you can get to the action without sitting
in the drivers seat. Take a look at our Officials/
Marshals page.
Please contact the Classic Sports Car Club for
any advice or help about how to get started
with us.

Lisa Selby and Toby Harris have
been eagerly awaiting another night
race since taking part in the CSCC
Halloween event at Donington back in
2010 in their Fiesta XR2i.
"It was an amazing experience and
really exciting to be racing in the dark
sometimes having to imagine where
the apex will be as you go over a crest
and the lights are pointing into the sky
leaving the circuit in the dark.
Even with the addition of rally spotlights,
as well as full beam, it wasn't until
you had overtaken someone that you
realised you were using their headlights
as well as your own. All of a sudden
you could now only see a few metres in
front, instead of a couple of car lengths,
this only slowed us down 2.7 secs
compared to the race in the day." Lisa
Lisa and Toby will be out in their Ford
Puma (Car 7) today in both the Tin Tops
race in Class E and this night race.
