European Aluminium Award 2008 complete success The jury of the European Aluminium Award 2008 chose five prize-winners this year as well as presenting two special prizes in the Industrial Design & Engineering category. A total of 48 companies took part in this year’s competition and each presented an innovative product made with aluminium. Of these, 30 entries were nominated in five categories. The awards were made on 23 September during the Award Gala at the ALUMINIUM 2008 trade fair in Essen. In aluminium and its alloys, the market has a versatile material that can fulfil the demands made by customers. This year the jury found that the quality of the entries was of a particularly high standard. Prizes were awarded as follows: The prize for design in the Consumer Products category went to Vasco Belgium for its Bryce Radiator. This is a heating unit made from vertical aluminium profiles. Depending on the angle of incidence of the light, there are delightful reflections in the widest possible range of colour variations. Alurunner Germany received a European Aluminium Award 2008 for innovation for its Alurunner sled. The interesting shape of the framework with its X-shaped design tipped the scales here. The European Aluminium Award 2008 in the Industrial Products Automotive & Transport category went to Resqtec Zumro Holland for its aircraft recovery system. Bayards Italy won the prize for Building & Construction for its aluminium stairway. The award in the Mechanical Engineering & Electronics category went to Alimex Germany for its ACP5080 MF solar panel. A special prize for production technology was awarded in the Mechanical Engineering & Electronics category to Balco India. Balco invented an ‘aluminium fuse’ which can be used in the aluminium electrolysis process to transfer a current of 320 kA to the next pot for ten minutes without having to interrupt the bridge circuit. The European Aluminium Award 2008’s Overall Jury Prize went to Lotus Engineering UK for its Evora Aluminium Sports Car Structure. Lotus is offering a unique approach to 1/2 car bodies.
