ANNUAL REPORT
1
MESSAGE FROM MATT JOHNSON, CEO
The year of 2015 served as Cherokee Regional Medical Center’s 99th
year of service to the Cherokee area. This organization has remained a faithful
caregiver to the people, friends, and family of the region through the efforts of
a dedicated workforce ranging from housekeepers to physicians to nurses to
accountants, etc. Everyone at CRMC is part of our overall health care team.
2015 was an exciting year for CRMC. One of the highlights of the year was
the acquisition of Dr. Patricia Harrison’s medical clinics in Cherokee and Aurelia.
This was a natural transition as Dr. Harrison and her staff had assisted CRMC
in providing excellent care to the community for years. CRMC welcomed Dr.
Harrison into our Emergency Department on a full-time basis and many of her
staff transitioned into new roles within CRMC and Cherokee Regional Clinics.
This acquisition helped contribute to the strong growth in the clinic this past year. The newly acquired
Aurelia clinic underwent some minor remodeling last June, then re-opened to become our fourth regional
clinic location, joining Cherokee, Holstein and Marcus.
Another exciting event in 2015 was the addition of uninterrupted skin to skin contact for moms and
babies following cesarean section (C-section) deliveries. This important bonding between mom and baby
has taken place for years during traditional child birth. However, CRMC is one of the first hospitals in the
area to integrate this practice following C-sections. This has been successful through the dedication and
team work of the physicians and staff in the Obstetrics, Surgery, and Anesthesia departments.
During 2015 CRMC also saw significant growth in our Laboratory with the expansion of its hours; the
first total shoulder replacement completed at CRMC; and our Trauma Level (IV) re-verification which was
spearheaded by Dondee Halverson, RN, and Dr. Chris VandeLune.
CRMC also continues to remain financially strong. In 2015, we were able to achieve a 2.8%
operating margin. Positive operating margins are not common in most rural hospitals; however CRMC
continues to lead through efficient but effective care to the community. The work of the Board of Directors,
Administration, and the Management team has been instrumental in keeping CRMC financially viable and
equipped for the ever-changing health care market.
In the upcoming year CRMC will celebrate 100 years of service. Throughout the year we will be
holding various events and provide ample opportunities to remember and rejoice in our accomplishments
while remaining focused on the future. In summary, CRMC is poised and positioned to be the area’s rural
health care leader for many years to come.
I am proud to be the new CEO of CRMC and I welcome all questions, or suggestions, concerning this
report. Please feel free to contact me at 712.225.1505 or via email at mjohnson@cherokeermc.org.

2015 HIGHLIGHTS
Cherokee Regional Clinics
In the spring of 2015, Cherokee Regional Clinic
entered into an agreement to acquire the private family
medical practice of Dr. Patricia Harrison and her clinics
in Cherokee and Aurelia. Dr. Harrison, and many of her
staff, transitioned into other roles and have become valued
members of the CRMC team.
After undergoing some minor remodeling in June, the
Aurelia Clinic re-opened in July, once again providing
CRMC with a local health care presence in Aurelia.
Cherokee Regional Clinics now have four clinic locations
within the communities of Cherokee, Aurelia, Holstein,
and Marcus.
As a result of the acquisition, Cherokee Regional Clinic
realized substantial growth with over 25,000 clinic visits in
2015.
Emergency Medicine
In the hospital Emergency Room or off campus through
our Ambulance Department, the emergency medical
services team at CRMC treated an increased number of
patients in 2015. Our ambulance crew responded to 1,122
off-site calls, and 4,989 visits were recorded through the ER.
Patient transports increased as well in 2015.
Laboratory
2015 was a busy year in the CRMC Laboratory
Department as they performed 76,129 lab tests, which
was a substantial increase over the previous year. This
growth was spurred by double-digit percentage increases
in outpatient tests, inpatient tests, and in-house tests for
Cherokee Regional Clinic.
Due to the increased demand, the CRMC Laboratory
is now being staffed 24 hours a day, resulting in quicker
turn around times for after-hours lab requests.

CRMC Annual Report 2015
Obstetrics
The CRMC Obstetrics Department continued to excel
with 147 births in 2015.
In addition to the ongoing programs that they are known
for, the OB department was dedicated to improving the
birthing and postpartum experience for all of their expectant
families.
In 2015, two OB nurses became certified lactation
counselors. They provide free lactation consults before and
after delivery, follow up phone calls, and have formed a
breastfeeding support group.
The OB staff worked together with the Surgery and
Anesthesia departments as they started performing
uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact for moms and babies
following C-section deliveries. CRMC was one of the first
hospitals in the area to offer this service.
Radiology
2015 was a strong year for the CRMC Radiology
Department as they performed 11,808 procedures,
an increase from 2014. Magnetic Resonance Imaging
(MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), and general
radiology services contributed to the growth while Digital
Mammography and Ultrasound exams remained steady.
Also, the purchase of a C-Arm has been a welcome
addition for the Radiology, Surgery, and Anesthesia
departments as it has been utilized for various
fluoroscopy and barium studies, injection studies, as
well as orthopedic and general surgeries.
Surgery
This newly remodeled state-of-the-art facility has drawn
rave reviews from patients and visiting surgeons alike since it
opened 16 months ago. These upgrades allowed the surgery
team to broaden its offerings at CRMC in 2015.
This is especially true in regard to the field of orthopedics.
The first total joint arthroplasty at CRMC was performed in
2015. In addition, the Anesthesia Department started offering
ultrasound guided regional blocks for orthopedic procedures.
In 2015, the CRMC Surgery Department was also
featured in the national trade publication “Outpatient Surgery”
for their ideas on improving patient safety in the Operating
Room and improving turnover time within the department.

HONORS & ACCREDITATIONS
CRMC Named Top 100 Critical Access Hospital
For the second consecutive year, Cherokee
Regional Medical Center was named one of the
iVantage HEALTHSTRONG Top 100 Critical
Access Hospitals (CAHs) in the United States.
CRMC, an affiliate of UnityPoint Health,
scored in the top 100 of Critical Access Hospitals
on the iVantage Hospital Strength INDEX™. The INDEX is the industry’s most comprehensive rating of US
acute care hospitals, and the only one to include the country’s 1,300 CAHs. The results recognize that the
Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals provide a safety net to communities across rural America – measuring
them across 62 different performance metrics, including quality, outcomes, patient perspective, affordability,
population risk and efficiency.
“Rural healthcare deserves the same performance analysis as all provider performance. It plays a vital
role for communities across America, serving nearly 80 million people. The services provided in rural America
are similar to those needed in any major metropolitan area, yet the volumes and economic resources provide
little economies of scale, making for little benefit from scale. These top 100 Critical Access Hospitals exhibit
a focused concern for their community benefits and needs, regardless of scale, reimbursement and people’s
ability to pay,” said Michael Topchik, senior vice president of iVantage Health Analytics.
CRMC Earns Trauma IV Re-Verification
CRMC successfully completed the categorization
and verification process as a Community (Level IV)
Trauma Care Facility. Dr. Christopher VandeLune and
Dondee Halverson, RN, led Cherokee Regional Medical
Center’s Trauma Care Facility re-verification efforts.
The re-verification is valid until July 2017.
CRMC Home Choice Home Health Department
Receives HHCAHPS Honors
CRMC Home Choice home health has been named a
2015 HHCAHPS HONORS™ recipient.
HHCAHPS Honors is a landmark compilation of home
health agencies providing the best patient experience.
Established by Deyta Analytics, this prestigious annual
review recognizes agencies that continuously provide quality
care as measured from the patient’s point of view.
Deyta used the Home Health Consumer Assessment
of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HHCAHPS) survey
results from partnering home health agencies contained in
its HHCAHPS database with an evaluation period of April
2014 through March 2015. Deyta identified HHCAHPS Honors recipients by evaluating performance on a set of
nineteen satisfaction indicator measures; omitting qualifying, leader, and demographic questions.
HHCAHPS Honors recipients include those agencies scoring above the Deyta National Average on at
least eighty-five percent, or seventeen, of the evaluated questions.

EMPLOYEE SERVICE MILESTONES
CEO John Comstock Retires Leaving His Mark on CRMC
In March 2015, longtime President and CEO, John
Comstock announced his plans to retire from Cherokee
Regional Medical Center.
Comstock served as President and CEO of CRMC for
19 years, joining the organization in September 1996. He
previously served as the Senior Vice President for the Iowa
Hospital Association and in other executive roles within the
health care industry.
During his tenure at CRMC, Comstock guided the
organization through a period of overwhelming change
within the health care industry. He oversaw the development
of major infrastructure changes at CRMC through various
construction projects including The Beck (our 32-unit senior
living complex), Wellness Center, and the Hospice Garden.
In addition, he directed multiple remodeling and
expansion projects of the hospital facility itself and
established a local health care presence in other area
communities through regional clinics in Cherokee, Aurelia,
Holstein, and Marcus.
He also helped coordinate CRMC’s affiliation with
UnityPoint Heath, including UnityPoint Health- St. Luke’s in
Sioux City, and the implementation of the EPIC electronic
medical records system. All of these efforts have helped
CRMC to thrive in a tumultuous health care environment that
has seen many rural hospitals struggle.
As a result of Comstock’s leadership, CRMC has
progressed and flourished as a multi-dimensional rural
health care organization. He helped CRMC grow not only
through the addition of health care services offered locally by
the hospital and Specialty Clinic, but also helped to greatly
expand preventive care efforts through the construction of
the CRMC Wellness Center.
John and his wife Rita are the parents of four adult
children; Eric (Claudia) and their sons Aiden, Cole, and
Sean; Maura (Drew) Goaley and their sons Charlie, Will, and
Luke; Patrick (Ashley) and son Ryan; and Tom and fiance
Nicole McDermott.
At his formal retirement party in July of 2015, the CRMC
Board of Directors honored John for his distinguished
service by renaming the private drive leading from
North 1st Street to the Emergency Entrance at CRMC.
