Dear Parents:
Summer comes and goes quickly and all of us want
to make the most of the season. This directory will
help you find activities families can enjoy together
and for your children. Summer is a wonderful time
for students to participate in a program that can
provide new experiences and reinforce skills learned
during the school year to support year-round
learning. This helps to prevent “summer learning
loss” and keeps kids engaged in positive ways.
Finding an affordable summer program that
meets your needs can be a challenge. The
directory lists a variety of camp, tutorial and other

Hartford and the surrounding area, as well as a park
and pool schedules, free lunch programs, and other
activities. Youth programs offer a combination of
activities to promote learning and youth
development. Options for both youth and adults
with disabilities, as well as for senior citizens, are
included.

What should I know before I get started?
Begin by exploring with your children their interests in
activities offered in the summer program listings. Also, be
sure to talk with their teachers about their academic
needs and whether your child may be required to attend
summer school. You will need to be sure that the
programs you choose won’t conflict with summer school
dates and times, and to identify times during the summer
your children will be able to participate in additional
summer programs.
If your child is required to attend summer school,
find out in what school the sessions will take place, and
check the program listings (or ask school staff) for
summer programs operating in or near the school that
your child will be attending, so that they can participate in
programs after summer school ends each day.
Also, please be aware that a number of the day
programs are located in Hartford area schools. Be sure to
check with staff to confirm locations and schedules.
Can my child attend both the Hartford Public Schools Early Start or other
HPS morning programs, and a summer camp or other community program?
Yes. The Hartford Public Schools Intervention 2015
programs are designed to provide enrichment activities
around the summer school sessions.
A few programs also continue after summer school
ends in August. Youth not participating in HPS summer
programs may enroll in a full-day community program.
For details on the Hartford Public Schools Early Start and
other programs, please refer to the summary in this
directory. For additional details, visit the HPS website:
www.hartfordschools.org.
(Early Start) or other program sessions are held either in
the morning or afternoon and a number of the summer
camps and other community programs offer half-day
sessions. So, if your child is attending Early Start or other
HPS programs, he or she can attend a camp or other
community program either for a half-day or participate in
a full-day program during June or July before summer
school is in session. Many of the Hartford school-based

5. Fees and financial aid: Some programs have fees. If
you are unable to pay the program fee, please contact the
program anyway. Many programs offer “camperships,”
which are similar to scholarships. Your child may qualify
for a campership or reduced fee based on family income.
Be sure to contact the program that interests you as soon
as possible to find out, and note the “◆” and “$”
symbols used in this directory to indicate when programs
offer free or reduced fees to qualified applicants.
6. Transportation: Some programs provide transportation.
This is noted in the listing.

Registration deadline/program contacts:
The registration deadline and program staff contact
information are listed, but don’t wait until the deadline to
call. Call as soon as possible to help ensure that your child
and other family members can participate in the program
of their choice. If the registration deadline has passed, call
the program to see if space is available.
How to use this directory
This directory lists 48 summer programs. It is divided into
three sections: camp, counselor-in-training and tutorial
programs.
■ Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Programs
These programs offer older youth who are too young to
work a regular job the chance to earn a little money and
receive training as assistants at camps or other summer
programs. Many of the programs offer a small stipend
while helping teens gain important leadership skills. You’ll
want to sign up quickly for these programs as CIT
internships go fast!
■ Camp Programs
These summer programs offer a variety of fun learning
activities including sports, arts, crafts, theater, swimming,
computers, science, reading and other enrichment
activities, and much, much more. Both residential and day
summer programs are offered. Pick a program that best
suits your child’s interests.
■ Tutorial Programs
These programs encourage your child’s love of learning
and academic success — with an emphasis on fun. Each
program is different. Review the program descriptions, talk
with program staff and select the program that will meet
your child’s academic needs and interests the most.
How do I enroll my child in one of these programs?
Contact the program directly as soon as possible. Use the
contact information listed in the program listings. If one
program is full, call another. There are many options available
for children and youth living in the Greater Hartford area.
Are there other summer programs available for children
and youth in Greater Hartford?
Yes. For information about summer programs not listed
pantries, housing information, benefits assistance, health care
options, childcare programs, services for children with special
needs, and much more. Dial 2-1-1 anytime day or night to talk
to a 2-1-1 specialist or search the online database at

Spring 2015
Dear Families,
Let's celebrate summer! It is a wonderful time for families and for
keeping youth engaged. During the summer, math and reading skills
learned in school can fade if students are not involved in interesting
activities that reinforce those skills. Many parents look for summer
programs that will engage their children in activities that can help them
continue to learn, promote healthy development and have fun at the same
time. This directory, which we have been proud to publish in collaboration
with the Hartford Public Schools for many years, provides information
about summer school and other local programs, including programs for
persons with special needs and senior citizens.
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving is pleased to work with
agencies to develop strategies to support busy parents in their efforts to
encourage their children to read more and to continue to develop their
academic and other skills.
Many of the summer programs listed in this directory are free or offer
reduced fees, so we encourage parents to ask about financial assistance.
We also invite parents and other adults looking for support in developing
their job skills and connecting to training or employment to review the
workforce development opportunities included in the back of this
directory.
Enjoy the summer!
Sincerely,
Linda J. Kelly

The Hartford Public Schools (HPS) offers a summer program known as
Early Start Intervention 2015 (Early Start) for students in grades
K-7 who are mandated to participate. Early Start students will be taught
in the school they attended during the 2014-2015 school year.
Academic instruction, breakfast, lunch, nursing services, and
transportation (for eligible students) are provided at no cost for
mandated students.
Early Start students in grades K-7 will improve
in the academic areas of reading and math as
evidenced by the results of the progress
monitoring assessments and participate in
enrichment learning opportunities* provided
by Community-Based Organizations (CBOs).
Please check with your school site for additional information and
updates regarding the Early Start summer program.
Summer Bridge Programs (Grades 8-9)
Current 8th and 9th grade students who are transitioning into a new school or academy are invited to
attend the Summer Bridge Program. The Summer Bridge Program provides students and families
with an opportunity to meet the staff, prepare academically for the new school year, and become
acquainted with the school building and resources. These programs are tailored to each school’s
academic theme and school facility.
Please check with your school site for additional information and updates regarding the Summer
Bridge Program.
Centralized Summer Credit Recovery
Program (Grades 9-12): June 29–July 30, 2015

are currently enrolled in a Hartford Public School who are in need of credit recovery towards
graduation. The program will be held on the campus of Hartford Public High School and there is no
cost to Hartford residents who attend a Hartford Public School.
Registration was due April 2, but spaces may still be available. In addition, some high
schools may host other summer learning opportunities. Please contact your child's school or school
