Performance Lighting Systems Architectural Lighting Innovations Contemporary Lighting Solutions FAQ’s Frequently Asked Questions LED technology is rapidly advancing. To provide the best product SPI Lighting will continue to advance our LED offering to match the newest technology. There may be times when SPI will substitute newer and better technology than what our catalog, quotes, and submittals reflect. We will notify you of these substitutions. SPI will support, warranty every generation of product with equal or better technology. Any special requirements for specific wattages, lumens, color temperatures, LED brands, or board construction may require special handling, longer lead times and associated fees above the quoted price. Can you get Energy Savings using LEDs? Yes it is possible to save energy when using LED’s. Be sure to look at actual photometry and run applications to determine the foot candles on your work plane. Do not just compare lumen values. There are other benefits to LED in addition to energy savings. Fixtures in locations that are hard to reach would be perfect candidates, as lamp (LED) replacement is much less of an issue. Do LEDs really last over 100,000 hours? LEDs may last 100,000 hours but that depends on how you define life. Now that the industry has adopted L70, 50,000 hours is more realistic. When reading claims be sure to understand what conditions they are made under. What were the ambient temperatures, and is this a realistic condition based on fixture location? Can we change the output level? Yes we may be able to create a special board. Minimums apply, please consult factory. Can we paint the Styk and Tryg fixture? Accents yes, but the extrusion must be anodized. Can we anodize other colors? It is possible, but not suggested. Minimums apply and UV resistance is a concern. The best process for UV resistance creates limited colors. We use black and clear. Can we create different optical distrubtion? Yes, and we are working on additions to cover most common applications. What is our maximum length? Four foot fixtures (Tryg) and eight foot fixtures (Styk) are the maximum standard length. A continuous extrusion of 18 feet long is possible, please consult factory. Some wattage limitations may also exist. Can we do continuous row? Yes. We mount fixtures end to end and can supply a mechanical attachment if required. Can we mount the fixtures differently? Absolutely. Our design is quite flexible so let us know what you need. Can we mount LEDs inside an existing fixture? Yes, we have the ability to mount our LED modules in many of our existing products. How do you ensure consistency among fixtures built today or a year from now? All of our LED modules are date and lot coded to keep track of what LED dies are used on the board. This is a unique number on each lot of modules. Does the thermal management system keep the LED junction temperature below specified maximums in all applications? Yes, we have test data to back that the junction temperature stays below the LED manufacturer ratings to achieve 50,000 Hr life at L70. Is there an end-of-life policy? Yes. See TERMS AND CONDITIONS for additional information. This information and specifics can change and most likely will as LED technology continues to advance, and SPI continues to improve our products at the same time. 10400 N. Power Supply (Wattage Per Circuit) 1.) For class II per UL, max wattage per circuit is 100W (We offer a 96W, 75W, and 20W power supply, see CPS10875). 2.) Calculate max load of power supply using a 10% factor of safety to account for electrical tolerances. 96W x .9 = 86.4W Max Load 75W x .9 = 67.5W Max Load 20W x .9 = 18.0W Max Load 3.) Calculate the total fixture wattage. 8 feet of 13.4W: 8 x 13.4W = 107.2W, need two power supplies 6 feet of 6.8W: 6 x 6.8W = 40.8W, need one power supply 4.) Decide if you need an enclosure for the power supply (PSE option). Our wet listed power supply ships with an integral splice compartments. This is dependent in the fixture and LED package specified. Fixtures are dimmable via a PWM (Pulse Width Modulator). Osram has OTDIM or by others. For SPI offering see CPS11411. Controls are specific to dimming device, the Osram OTDIM requires 0-10V dimming control. Still requires a 24VDC power supply. OTRGBDIM and OTDMXRGB or by others. Requires external controller (by others). Requires a 24VDC power supply. Warranty The warranty is five years for the LEDs. See TERMS AND CONDITIONS for additional information. Whose LEDs are being used Input Power Cree, Nichia, Osram, and Samsung, depending on the LED package chosen. We have three different modules. The boards consumes 4.0 watts (w) per foot (ft), 6.8w/ft, and 13.4w/ft. Power supplies are approximately 85% efficient, so you need to add on about 15% to the per foot wattage for the actual draw of the fixture plus power supply. Our Styk and Tryg fixtures are installed in Star Market, in Chestnut Hill, MA, which is owned by Supervalue Supermarkets. Our Styk and Tryg won the NGL2009 (Next Generation Luminaires) award for fixture design with Styk winning a “Best in Class.” The NGL award is a joint venture of the IESNA (Illuminating Engineering Society - North America), IALD (International Architectural Lighting Design), and the U.S. Department of Energy. LM-79 Testing by an Independant Testing Agency We use independent testing laboratories and testing is done per LM-79 guidelines. LM-80 LM-80 has been performed by the manufacturer of the LED diode. TM-21 Life Testing We do our internal temperature verification per the LED manufacturer guidelines in each of our fixtures. Using the LM-80 lifetime information provided by the manufacturer, and TM-21 guidelines, we establish 10400 N. Enterprise Drive Mequon, WI 53092-4475 www.spilighting.com 262.242.1420
