INTRODUCTION
e243698
JTEC MCB’s are premium thermal-magnetic MCB’s approved as
supplementary protectors to UL1077 (CSA 235), and UL listed as manual motor
starters to UL508.
Anatomy of a High Performance MCB

They are available in 1, 2, 3P versions plus neutrals and offer industry standard
dimensions and trip characteristics.

• Certified as manual motor controllers & marked “Suitable
for use as motor disconnect”.
• Current/energy limiting performance minimizes damage to
wiring and components.
• Ratings up to 10KA and 600Vac
• Fit standard 35mm DIN rail. Dual fixing mechanism allows
MCB to be released from top or bottom.
• Solenoid ‘hammer-trip’ mechanism and arc-control chutes for
reliable fault interruption.
• Wide range of field installable options.
• Optional busbar system for time and labour saving installation.
Busbar tie points are separate from box terminals and may be
used as splitter connections if busbar not used.
• ‘Trip-free’ toggle mechanism with clear on/off status.
• JTEC MCB’s can be reverse fed.

APPLICATIONS FOR SUPPLEMENTARY MCB’S
JTEC MCB’s are used wherever closer overcurrent protection of components is required than the branch circuit device is capable of
providing. Supplementary devices are typically used on the load side of the branch circuit device to ‘Supplement’ the branch circuit
device’s capabilities and are available in a wide range of current ratings and trip characteristics that allow them to be matched to
the overcurrent requirements of individual control components.
JTEC MCB’s are also suitable as manual motor controllers and can be used for direct across-the-line control of AC motors or group
protection of AC motors to UL 508. They are marked “Suitable for use as motor disconnect” to meet emerging inspection
requirements.
JTEC MCB’s are current and energy limiting. They can reduce the heating and magnetic effects of short circuits to greatly reduced
levels. Their ‘trip-free’ mechanism prevents reclosing the MCB onto a faulted circuit and provides a clear indication of a tripped
unit.
Their compact dimensions, ease of mounting and excellent performance make them an ideal overcurrent device for the protection
of small motors, communication and computer equipment, appliances, general control circuits, solenoids and coils, lighting circuits,
and resistive loads.

TRIP CURVES
Tripping Characteristic of
JTECUL Circuit Breaker ( In < 10A )
e243698
Tripping Characteristic of
JTECUL Circuit Breaker ( In > 10A )
Trip Characteristics
Short Circuit (Instantaneous)
JTEC MCB’s use industry standard B, C, D instantaneous
trip characteristics. Which refer to the instantaneous
magnetic trip and are expressed in multiples of the
breaker current rating.
B Trip Curve
Overload (Thermal)
The thermal overload capabiltiy of the JTEC series is
130% in less than 1 hour. These overload trip times are
the same for B, C and D trip curves.
JTEC MCB’s are calibrated to fall as close as possible to
the center of the trip curve tolerances. Each JTEC trip
curve class is independently tested and approved.
Instantaneous trip of 3-5X breaker current rating.
Use this curve for protection of sensitive electrical/electronic
equipment or where a fast acting characteristic is required.
B curves are not suitable for use on circuits with inherent surge
currents such as motors, transformers or generators.
C Trip Curve
Instantaneous trip of 5-10X breaker current rating.
C curve is the ideal general purpose curve. Suitable for use on
mixed circuits with some natural surges. Use for general control panel device protection.
D Trip Curve
Instantaneous trip of 10-20X breaker current rating.
The D curve is intended for use on circuits with high inrush/
surge currents such as transformers, solenoids, small motors
and capacitors.
The inherent delay in the trip characteristic allows the normal
surges to subside without nuisance tripping.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES
e243698
General
The trip curve is then chosen to match the intended application. Select breaker trip curve based on the following:
B trip
Sensitive electronic equipment with no inherent surges or
momentary overloads
• Solid state devices
• Switching power supplies
• Inputs and outputs for PLC’s
C trip
Ambient De-rating Factor
1.30
Multiple of Amp Rating
To meet the Canadian Electrical Code guidelines for 80%
circuit loading, JTEC MCB’s should be selected at 125% of
the nominal circuit/device full load current or 100% of the
connected wire ampacity, whichever is less. This will ensure
that the MCB’s provide the necessary degree of overload protection.
