“WHISPER 200 - WIND CHARGE CONTROLLER” WHISPER 200 WIND CHARGE CONTROLLER The Whisper 200 charge controller is an intelligent Wind Charge Controller to provide the safest, secure and productive wind generator operation. The Controller mechanism includes the monitoring of various parameters like battery voltage, battery charging, load diversion, auto manual setting, cumulative kWh, etc. The controller is PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) type charge control logic. The Controller contains 3 phase full wave rectification for battery charging and PWM type load diversities system. The system continuously monitors certain vital parameters i.e. voltage current power etc. SPECIFICATION : 1) The Wind Charge Controller – Whisper 200 - is well-suited for 12V / 24V / 48V. 2) Clear alpha-numeric digital LCD screen with user selectable display options. 3) Equipped with advanced microcontroller based technology to provide easy access for 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) monitoring and operation for the user. Field adjustable battery voltage set points. Energy saving backlight operation. Controller diverts extra energy to dumpload, when batteries are fully charged. Battery over Voltage Protection. Suitable for standalone or multiple parallel module application to suit different power rating. Powder coated - corrosion proof sheet steel box. User select : auto or manual operation Higher voltage charging option for equalizing charge (in manual mode) Automatic braking mode at battery overcharge / very high turbine speed. Suitable for Rack mounting and the Wall mounting. Lightning surge protective devices. Operating ambient upto 52°C. The Whisper controller is equipped with latest PWM (Pulse width modulation) technology to slowly lower the charging energy applied to the batteries as the batteries get closer to fully charged. This topology allows the batteries to be more uniformly charged with less stress on the battery, extending battery life. It also keeps the batteries in a fully charged state by adjusting pulse width (called float mode). WHISPER CONTROLLER – MOUNTING PRELIMANARY MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR WHISPER CONTROLLER Please note that for preliminary turbine to controller tests; it may be convenient to temporarily mount the Whisper Controller close to the wind turbine. This will allow the user easy access to the controls and displays while testing the turbine and controller functionality. Please observe the following recommendations for mounting the controller. The tests to be performed prior to mounting the blades. MOUNTING : The Whisper 200 controller can be mounted vertically on the wall or horizontally on the Rack or Table. Keep adequate rear space for cooling the power devices used in the Whisper controller. The diversion load is mounted inside the charge controller, itself. WHISPER CONTROLLER – WIRING 1. First check the battery voltage and polarity, then connect the battery connections B + and B – terminals. (CAUTION: It is strongly recommends connecting the controller to the batteries BEFORE making wind turbine connections. 2. First check whether the wind turbine is freely rotating or not. If it is rotating smoothly, then brake it by an external brake switch. Now, connect the three wires from Wind turbine at W1, W2, W3 terminals. 3. Connect Anemometer connection at the three pin connector as shown in the figure. Refer to the wire selection table to select correct wire size to battery and wind turbine with the controller. The size of the wire required to connect the Whisper 200 controller to the wind turbine is determined by the maximum power produced by the wind generator, system voltage and the distance between the wind generator and Whisper 200 controller and also include the height of the tower. Consider Whisper 200 wind generator is 1000 W having the maximum efficiency of around 95 % in an area with a 12 mph average wind speed. To use the charts, measure distance from Whisper 200 charge controller to wind generator, find the closed distance listed in the column for your system voltage and read the wire size to the left of the distance. Note: If your measured distance is nearly midway between the two distances on the chart, it is always better to select the larger size wire. This is particularly true in order with higher wind speeds. Distances are listed in both feet and meters. CHARGE CONTROLLER OPERATION The AC power generated by the wind turbine is harnessed by using suitable size copper conductors and carried out to the wind controller. The wind controller initially converts 3 phase AC input in DC using bridge rectifier. The bridge rectifier then supplies the DC power through the suitable protecting devices like over current protecting device, etc. The controller monitors the battery bank voltage contiounlsly and the dump load. The dump load is gradually connected to the wind power so that it does not load wind turbine in one shot and then current to the dump load increases as voltage builds up on the battery. PWM technology is utilized to control the power to the dump load.
