We’d like to swap one book with each of the participants of this year’s Bold Italic conference day. Ideally a book they have participated in making—and therefore champion the content, of course. At first, we UK only need the three dimensions (h x w x thickness) and we’ll construct a bookcase which will contain the books. When we finally meet on the 17th of april, we’ll exchange the books and the bookcase will be completed like a puzzle. This project takes its name from the Penguin Donkey pieces of furniture made in the 1930s. “It was named the Donkey because it had four legs and two panniers. The space between the side-compartments could be used for magazines. The shelves in the bookcase were just the right size to house the distinctive orange-covered Penguin paperbacks.” Maki, Benjamin, Patrick and Kajsa for åbäke booklet08 24-03-2008 01:16 Pagina 9 WERKPLAATS TYPOGRAFIE NL booklet08 24-03-2008 01:16 Pagina 10 booklet08 24-03-2008 01:17 Pagina 11 booklet08 24-03-2008 01:17 Pagina 12 MARC GOETHALS Collector Marc Goethals is setting up a unique exhibition showcasing artists’ books from the period 1968 -1972. The exhibition traces how artists from the concrete poetry, Fluxus and conceptual art movements dealt with the medium of the book in their practices. Interactions between artists, mutual influences, sympathies as well as tensions are revealed. Books are shown from the publisher’s lists of Hansjörg Mayer (herman de vries, Dieter Roth, Gerhard Rühm, et al.) and Something Else Press (Fluxus artists Robert Filliou, George Brecht, Wolf Vostell, Dick Higgins et al.) and by artists such as Lawrence Weiner, Joseph Kosuth, Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenburg and Stanley Brouwn. Apart from artists’ books, the exhibition shows magazines and presents a publication that contains an illustrated and annotated list. Marc Goethals will give an introduction to the exhibiton “Concrete Poetry, Fluxus and Conceptual Art: a Book Friction” at Bold Italic. His books include ‘Graphic Design: A Concise History’ and ‘Swiss Graphic Design: The Origins and Growth of an International Style 1920-1965’. Åbäke consists of four graphic designers — Patrick Lacey, Benjamin Reichen, Kajsa Ståhl and Maki Suzuki — who were educated at Brighton University, Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, HDK in Gothenburg and the Royal College of Art in London. Since graduating in 2000 the group has been based in London working for clients who include Maison Martin Margiela, Peter Jensen and Martino Gamper. They teach at the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins, and organise workshops and events in Europe and beyond. They have worked on the design (and content) of Sexymachinery (sexymachinery.com), an architectural production with Shumon Basar, Dominik Kremerskothen and Dagmar Radmacher, and the label Kitsuné (kitsune.fr) with Gildas Loaec and Masaya Kuroki. The Werkplaats Typografie (WT) is part of ArtEZ Institute of the Arts. WT is a two-year masters programme centred on practical assignments and self-initiated projects. It also serves as a meeting place for graphic designers with regard to research and dialogue. The WT is supervised by Karel Martens and Armand Mevis. Further guidance is given on a regular basis by Paul Elliman and Maxine Kopsa. Anniek Brattinga and Liesbeth Doornbosch are in charge of co-ordination. Visiting lecturers are regularly invited to provide individual tutoring and/or for presentations. Reviews of work, critiques and project participation are informal in character. Participants work in a professionally equipped studio accessible 24 hours a day. The WT is open to a maximum number of twelve graphic designers who would like to deepen their knowledge and skills. Participation depends entirely upon proven ability. Marc Goethals is an artist who lives in Belgium. He started showing his work in 1986. From the very beginning his work was characterised by the use of a wide range of media (watercolor, photography, artists’ books, painting, cut-outs...). He is focussing on visual language, asking the world what form images should take. – Exhibitions (selection): 1995 ‘Koncentryczny uklad ogrodowy’, Ujazdowski Castle, Warschau // 1997 ‘De Bok’, Het Kabinet Gent // 1997 ‘Set’, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona* // 1997 ‘Foundation of the Arts’ Sigmund FreudMuseum Vienna* // 1998 ‘Incubatie-project’ Kunsthalle Loppem* // 1998 ‘Aspects de l’art actuel en Belgique’ Frac, Nord-Pas de Calais* // 1998 ‘Dimensionele aspecten van abnormale...’, Muhka, Antwerpen // 2000 ‘Mais maître, mon oeuvre est petit’, Den Bouw, Kalken // 2000 ‘Se stasera sono qui...’, Norrtälje Konst Hall, Stockholm* // 2001 Camera Oscura, San Casciano dei Bagni, Italië – Akademia Belgica, Rome // 2003 ‘Een woning voor Diogenes’, Het Kabinet, Gent. // 2005 ‘Cover Black Dance’ Het Kabinet, Gent // 2006 ‘Plattegronden – Landkaarten’, Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle.
