Get ready for the time of your life! The annual performance
seasons at the Center are filled with world-class artists from
around the globe. Running the gamut from the classical to the
comedic, the performers at the Center will compel you, intrigue
you and dare you to step through the doors for a variety of
musical and dramatic experiences.
Have An Event At The Center
Looking for a unique event location? The California Center for
the Arts offers two state-of-the-art proscenium theaters
available to rent for your performance. The Center also houses
one of San Diego North's most extraordinary conference and
banquet facilities, and can host a variety of indoor or outdoor
events—from major trade shows to intimate weddings.
Escondido is a place to get cultured:
Cutting-edge museums, independent
galleries and local artists abound. New
school surrealists share space with
hand blown glass sculptures.
Independent theatre and Broadway acts
are found on the same night.
Public art, photography, music and
dance, or whatever feeds your soul can
be found in Escondido.
Queen Califia's Magical Circle is the only American sculpture
garden and the last major international project created by
Niki de Saint Phalle. It is situated within a 12-acre natural
habitat in Kit Carson Park on a parcel of land donated by the
City of Escondido. The Park's entrance is located five minutes
from I-15 and the Via Rancho Parkway exit.

The Escondido History Center is responsible for
everything from preserving structures and operating a
museum, to collecting thousands of artifacts and
photographs, to reviving the historic Grape Day festival.
They have worked for decades to preserve Escondido’s
heritage in a myriad of ways and continue to actively
collect photographs, artifacts and paper ephemera
pertaining to Escondido’s past and present.

The City of Escondido
established the Old
Escondido Historic
District in 1989. The
district, featuring 900
homes built in the mid
1880s to date is bounded
by 5th Avenue on the
North, 13th Avenue on
the South, Escondido
Boulevard on the West
and Chestnut Street on
the East.
From tiny bungalows to magnificent Victorian homes, the Old Escondido
Historic District contains the majority of Escondido’s historic resources.
It is a wonderful place to walk or tour by car. Many homes are
currently undergoing restoration and return visits will reveal steady
improvement within the district. A selection of homes is open for tours
annually on Mother’s Day.

Scene
Escondido is not only a great destination
for shopping, arts and entertainment, it is
also home to an enticing variety of
restaurants and eateries. There is
something for every one, with
delicious offerings from many
different cultures: Italian, Mexican,
French, Chinese, Japanese, Thai,
Vietnamese, Continental American and
Fusion. Enjoy traditional American fare
like hamburgers and french fries or
something more rare like roasted venison
and muscovy duck legs. Several
establishments are committed to using
locally grown, organic vegetables and
free-range meats. A number of
restaurants are family-owned and have
been in business for many years. For
sophisticated palates, unique chefowned restaurants are located
throughout the City, with many in the
Downtown. Favorite national restaurants

do. The Joslyn Senior Center provides a wonderful
environment, as well as coordination of programs, activities

City's Branch Library. It is a full-service
recreation center offering classes in health and
fitness, dance, personal development, preschool
and other children's activities. Youth sports
leagues, women's and men's basketball leagues,
and open gym hours to just shoot around are
popular leisure time activities in the full-sized
gymnasium.

The YMCA has two locations in Escondido. Child development, health and fitness,
active older adults programs and aquatics are some of the things you can do at the “Y”.

“A 319-bed acute care hospital boasts North County's only
trauma center, a 24-hour Emergency Department, and the

medical/surgical services. Fully accredited by the Joint
Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations (JCAHO), Palomar Medical Center (PMC)
has a family-friendly Birth Center that provides mothers
with labor, delivery and recovery care in home-like
comfort. PMC also has a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit (NICU) and a Pediatric Unit, which offers expanded
access to pediatric services for the children and families of
North County through a partnership with Children's
Hospital & Health Center, Children's Specialists of San

Palomar Medical Center West
Scheduled to open in 2011 in the Escondido Research and Technology Center, Palomar Medical Center West will be
the first new hospital in San Diego's North County in 30 years. The new state-of-the-art 725,000 square foot
hospital will incorporate environmentally-friendly design elements using natural materials and softer natural colors.
The hospital is being built to expand in phases to 600 beds, including expanded trauma and emergency services,
heart surgery, neurosurgery, vascular services and other essential care for residents in San Diego North.

The Chamber of Commerce has long
been the “Voice for Business” in
Escondido. The business movers and
shakers often join the Chamber for
many reasons: networking and
relationship opportunities, being a
member of an organization that can
influence state level legislation affecting
business, as well as the ability to
participate in educational and
informational seminars.
Escondido is unique because in
addition to a strong Chamber, there are
several business organizations that
specialize in their own geographic
areas. These areas have very unique
assets and challenges. The largest and
oldest is the Downtown Business
Association (DBA), which also
manages the Downtown Business
Improvement District. The East Valley
Association (EVA), Mercado Business
Association (MBA) and the South
Escondido Blvd. Business Association
(SEBA) are all active in making positive
changes to their business areas. These
activities include improving their
business environment, making their
areas clean and safe, and working on
individual Area Plans that control
zoning, appearance and land use.
Comerciantes Latinos Asociados (CLA)
is a bit different because it focuses on
Latino business owners in Escondido
rather than a geographic area.
Business to business commerce,
learning experiences, networking and
fundraising for special projects in the
Latino community are their focus.
Staying connected with the rest of the
region is also important, as is keeping
up with new ideas and best practices.
City membership in key organizations
helps to accomplish this goal.
The City has strong ties to the
businesses in Escondido. It collaborates
and partners to maximize resources
and the impacts of special projects and
programs. The City also builds lasting,

East meets west with the Sprinter light
rail line in operation from Escondido to
Oceanside and numerous stops along
the way, including Cal State University
San Marcos. The Escondido multimodal transit center provides bus rapid
transit and regular bus service. Now in
the planning stages, the Transit Center
will be transformed with significant
transit oriented development being
phased in over several years.
Gateway Transit Oriented Development “TOD”
Escondido's western gateway, just east of I-15 at West Valley Parkway, is and will continue to be transformed by
transit-oriented development. In addition to the Class A office development on La Terraza Boulevard and in the
Gateway Shopping Center, projects are being developed for the Escondido Transit Center and the City's Police Station
property. The Police Station will be moving to a new facility in mid 2009, making the property available for
redevelopment by the private sector. Plans include mixed-use development of office and retail for both sites, and a
possible residential component on the Transit Center site.
