More than an Education...
Devon Preparatory School
Annual Report of Gifts 2012-13
From the Headmaster
Dear Members of the Devon Prep Family,
From the very first day I stepped through the doors to Devon Prep in September 1962, this school has
been a huge part of my life. I received my formative high school education from the dedicated Piarist Fathers
and lay faculty members who had the wisdom to understand that education is not the same thing as teaching.
The education provided by these wonderful professionals enabled each student to reach his full potential in an
environment in which excellence was expected and Christian values were foundational. Simply stated, my
high-school experience at Devon Prep changed my life.
Devon Prep continues to change lives. As Devon develops the minds of our students, it simultaneously
provides opportunities to grow in spirit so that each of the young men entrusted to our care can develop into
men with a respect for God and neighbor. In addition to the quality education in the classroom our students
also benefit enormously from their shared experience on field trips and as team members, on the stage or in the
many service projects that we sponsor. Similar benefits result from enthusiastic student participation in our
many athletic and other extra-curricular opportunities. All of these facets of life at Devon Prep enable our
students to grow as individuals, gaining a deeper understanding of themselves, their talents, their responsibilities, and their place in our world. The professional, personal, and spiritual accomplishments of our alumni are
a proud testament to the success of the Devon Experience.
The Devon Experience! As you read the pages of this report you will certainly note that Devon Prep is
blessed with many wonderful benefactors who make this Devon Experience a reality. Their faithful support for
our mission yields dividends which last forever.
I now ask you to continue this support or to join the many whose generosity is reflected in this publication. Your support provides needed scholarships and financial aid opportunities for deserving students, helps
to attract and retain dedicated faculty and staff, provides needed materials for classrooms and labs, and
funds the many Devon extracurricular activities so that we may continue to provide that same Devon
Experience which has changed so many lives.
Thank you again and may God bless you and your loved ones, now and always!
Gratefully,
Rev. James J. Shea, Sch.P.
Headmaster
2 DEVON PREPARATORY SCHOOL Mission
Statement
Devon Preparatory School is a
private, Catholic, college
preparatory school for young
men in grades six to twelve.
Devon Prep’s approach to
education is based on the
traditions of the Piarist Fathers
who are dedicated to the
education of youth.
For more than 50 years Devon
Prep has provided a trusting and
supportive atmosphere where
young men are motivated to excel
academically, think independently
and creatively, to pursue careers
in diverse fields and to enjoy
extracurricular activities, both in
school and in the community.
It is the goal at Devon Prep to
inspire in our students a
commitment to values that will
enable them to become
responsible leaders.
Focusing on each student’s
potential, we believe that the
school and the family must work
together to foster a love of
learning which will propel the
student into a lifelong quest for
excellence— for the glory of God
and the service of neighbor.

Memorial and Tribute Gifts
Devon Prep Annual Fund
Donors can further educational opportunities at Devon
Prep by honoring or memorializing a special person or
event. Acknowledgment of the gift is made directly to the
family or designated individual.
Gifts to the Annual Fund are the cornerstone of the
School’s development program. These gifts, from trustees,
parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and
friends, support the current operations of the school,
providing additional resources to enrich the educational
experiences of our students.
Gifts of Appreciated Property
A gift of stock, real estate or other appreciated property
can provide vital support to Devon Prep as well as tax
advantages to the donor. The full value of the securities is
usually deductible, and you may avoid the capital gains
tax on the profit.
Capital Giving
Gifts to the Capital Giving Fund allow us to meet the long
-term goals identified in an internal assessment and in
our strategic plan. These gifts funded the construction of
Saint Anthony Hall and other campus improvements and
will fund an endowment to provide for Devon’s future
needs. Please contact the Development Office to discuss a
Capital Fund Gift.
Bequests
Providing for Devon Prep is as easy as adding a phrase to
your will. You may wish to consider naming Devon Prep to
receive all or part of your estate. Through careful planning
you can protect your family and also contribute to the financial security of Devon Prep. If you have already considered Devon Prep in your estate plans, please let us know,
so that we may count you among the members of The Calasanctian Society.
Matching Gifts
The easiest way to make your gift to Devon Prep grow is
through matching gifts. Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match charitable contributions
made by their employees. If you work for a company that
matches gifts, you can double or triple the value of your
contribution! Contact your Human Resources Department
for eligibility information and to obtain a matching gift
form, and follow your employer’s matching gift procedures
Gifts in Kind
Devon Prep gratefully accepts gifts of supplies, books, and
equipment. Tax deductions are available for firms and
individuals contributing gifts in kind to educational institutions.
United Way
Devon Prep is eligible to participate in the Donor Choice/
Specific Care Program of the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. During the United
Way’s annual campaign, donors may designate a gift to
Devon Prep on the Donor Choice pledge/designation form
through Specific Care. Devon Prep is classified as a “nonmember agency,” and recorded as DEVON PREP, 363
Valley Forge Road, Devon, PA 19333, with I.D. #04636.
The assigned identification number is consistent from
year to year.
While unrestricted gifts to the Annual Giving Fund provide Devon Prep with operating funds to help maintain the
quality of its academic programs, scholarship gifts enable
the school to award scholarship aid to deserving students.
Scholarship gifts can be made to the General Scholarship
Fund, or to one of the named Scholarship Funds. You can
also give or gain a little immortality while making a lasting impact on future generations by establishing an endowed scholarship in your name or in the name of someone
you would like to honor.
Many companies and government agencies offer their
employees the opportunity to make charitable gifts
through payroll deduction. Such workplace giving programs provide an easy and efficient way to make taxdeductible donations, and to spread your gift over an entire year. Please check with your employer to see if this is
an option for you, and ask how you can designate your gift
to Devon Prep.
Use your IRA to Make a
Tax-free Gift to Devon Prep
The IRA Charitable Rollover has been extended, applying to distribu ons made throughout the 2013 tax year. If you are at least 70 ½ years old, you can distribute up to $100,000 from your IRA to Devon Preparatory School, which will count toward your required minimum. Avoid income tax on the distribu on and support the educa on of the young men at Devon Prep. Consult your professional advisors regarding this charitable IRA rollover opportunity to help ensure that your gi meets all requirements as a qualified charitable distribu on. Scholarship Gifts

4 fund through two programs. The Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program and the Opportunity
Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) Program together provide a wonderful opportunity for Devon Preparatory
School, and a way for businesses to turn their tax dollars into donations. Our financial aid program, which
provides financial assistance to needy students, is
primarily funded by individual contributions to the
school. Corporate support allows us to offer access to a
private school education to more students, who may
otherwise not be able to attend Devon Prep. For more
information on these programs visit www.newpa.com
or contact the Development Office at Devon Prep.

“Devon Preparatory School has held a vital place
in the life of my family for over 15 years.”
“Devon Prep is a school that offers academically challenging courses within a framework of Catholic teaching and example. For those two reasons alone I gladly support the school. On a personal level, Devon Preparatory School has held a vital place in the life of my family for over 15 years. My younger son graduated from Devon in 2000, and I began working here in 2002. To me, it is only natural to support Devon Prep through contribu ng what I can.” Mrs. Laura Mondon Faculty Member Alumni Parent 5 “The monthly payroll contribution is a

“My payroll deduc on/contribu on to Devon Prep is a very subtle way for me to acknowledge and support the incredible educa onal and character building experi‐

Living Stations of the Cross
A group of seniors and several of their mothers helped the school community prepare for Easter by presen ng the first Living Sta ons of the Cross, a drama za on of Jesus’ journey to Calvary leading to His crucifixion. Jesus was portrayed by Jus n Barker and His mother Mrs. Jeanne Barker played the Virgin Mary. Other Devon mothers played the women of Jerusalem as well as Veronica. The reenact‐
ment of Jesus’ last hours included poignant moments such as – His sentencing, His falling under the weight of the cross, mee ng His mother Mary, being helped by a stranger, having His tunic stripped off of his body, and being nailed to the cross. According to Religion Teacher Mr. Joe Lewis, this type of presenta on helps the students picture themselves in the scene. “In a way they are experiencing first‐hand the suffering of Christ and hopefully get a be er apprecia on of what he went through for us,” he explained. 12 Class of 2016 (48% Participation)

“Devon Prep emphasizes independent thinking,
strong moral and religious principles ...”
“I support Devon Prep as it challenges our students to be crea ve and compassionate individuals. Devon Prep emphasizes independent thinking, strong moral and religious principles and affords each student the opportunity to maximize their talents in a caring and suppor ve se ng.” Mrs. Denise Gavin School Nurse , Guidance Counselor Alumni Parent DEVON PREPARATORY SCHOOL Solar Car Team Wins Trophy in
2013 Solar Car Challenge
Devon Prep’s Solar Car Team, The Devon Panel, competed in the 2013 Solar Car Challenge, an 884 mile open road race from Fort Worth, Texas to Los Angeles, California from July 23‐30. Driving the same car they built two years ago, with several new upgrades, they were able to complete 516.6 miles of the race earning the fourth place trophy. Devon Prep’s team is the first and only Pennsylvania high school team to par cipate in this na onal compe on. “Sol Tide,” as the car is named, measures 15 . X 2 ., and is covered with five solar panels. The car can travel as fast as 43 mph, but was driven about 22 mph throughout most of the eight day race. Although they passed all the qualifying tests, the first day of the actual race proved disappoin ng for the team, which consisted of nine Devon Prep students and several of their fathers. The boys had sprocket and ba ery trouble on Day 1, leaving them li le me to accumulate many miles on their own. However, a er working diligently on the car and fixing the problems, they were able to make it up on Days 2 and 3. The 14 cars par cipa ng in the race made regular stops along the route to LA to display the cars and talk to the media. The race took the par cipants from Texas to New Mexico to Arizona to California. The Devon Panel has competed in the Solar Car Challenge for the past two years, coming in 4th in 2011 and taking 2nd place last year. Both of those races were held at the Texas Motor Speedway. The Solar Car Challenge began in 1993 as a high school extra‐ curricular program named the “Winston Solar Challenge.” The program’s popularity has since grown rapidly and become its own non‐profit en ty. More than 65 schools in 20 states now take part in the race. The Solar Car Challenge is designed to mo vate students in STEM: science, technology, engineering, and mathema cs. Devon Prep La n teacher Ms. Melissa Browne received na onal a en on for her work on the Homer Mul text project, a project in which she works to understand the Homeric epics such as the “Iliad,” by researching some of the earliest wri en remains of such poetry in both manuscript and papyrus sources. Ms. Browne presented her findings in Washington DC at the Sunoikisis Undergraduate Research Symposium at Harvard University’s Center for Hellenic Studies, a na onally renowned hub of classics research. The Homer Mul text project is the first of its kind in Homeric studies, as it embraces technology by digitally presen ng both the text and historical framework of the “Iliad” and “Odyssey,” offering a free library of texts, images, and tools that allow readers to uniquely engage with Homer’s seminal works. Devon Prep Student Sees Sandy’s Destruction First Hand
street we were on was a mess. There were no buildings intact. There was sand all over the sidewalks, all along and inside the houses, things like that. There were random objects sca ered around. I wasn’t surprised that it was that damaged. I was surprised that it s ll had‐
n’t been cleaned up.” Michael and three young men from his church group, Chris an Youth Federa on (CYF), of Armenian Martyrs’ Congrega onal Church of Havertown, were assigned to digging and clearing sand from a cri cal walkway between two badly affected homes. The homes were to be demolished but the sand had become an obstacle. They dug sand all day, placed it in wheel barrows, moved it to the street where front end loaders later came and moved it to a bigger depository area. They had a 45 minute break for lunch where they ate a hot meal in military tents set up by the Na onal Guard. “It was kind of daun ng because by the end of the day we only cleared out this one walkway,” Several months a er our region was devastated by “Superstorm Sandy” Devon Prep Sophomore Michael Knudson learned “It’s not even close to being over.” Michael traveled two hours to volunteer in Sea Bright, New Jersey, the southern half of a barrier beach which is the Sandy Hook Penin‐
sula. The small town in Monmouth County sustained terrible damage and destruc on as a result of the storm. When he heard that his church youth group was planning to travel to Sea Bright to help with the clean‐up Michael thought it would be a good way to earn some of his required service hours and par cipate in an ac vity that could make a big impact. “It actually didn’t look that bad when we first got there,” he said. “But as we moved along the beach there was a lot of damage. There were a lot of collapsed buildings and wreck‐
age and there was sand everywhere. The 16 The tenth grader said. “It was probably 20 feet long with 2 feet of sand and it took us the en re day. I did fee s sense of accomplishment when it was done.” Michael explained that he works on various service projects throughout the year with CYF and Devon Prep. Although this project required a four hour round trip drive as well as a lot of physical labor he enjoyed working with his friends and comple ng a task that would help in the next step of the clean‐ up. Knowing that the process will take a long me he’d like to help again if the opportunity should arise. “None of the homes were untouched, but you could tell there were some that had been fixed up and they almost looked back to normal,” Michael said. “But there is s ll a lot of debris around them and things like that. It’s not over. It’s not even close to being over. It’s going to take a lot of me and effort to clean it up.”
