ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
Dear Parents and Caregivers
‘Making a Bigger Difference’ for all students has long
been a Ministry of Education goal and one that is
reflected each year in the Palmerston North
Intermediate Normal School Strategic Annual Plan.
The goal ‘all students achieving their potential’ is also
the goal central to ‘You Can Do It!’ (YCDI) Education
Philosophy – from which our ‘5 Keys to School
Success’ are derived.
The YCDI goal is ‘to provide all children the
foundations (the keys) for achievement and social and
emotional well – being in school, in work and in the
world tomorrow.’
The YCDI Education pedagogy involves teachers,
parents and the community working together to instil
in children a belief in the value of education, and a
belief in the importance of their own efforts in their
achievements.
No matter how effective a teacher is, research
indicates that the level of achievement of students
and their rate of learning are largely governed by
personal characteristics students bring with them ‘positive mind-set for achievement.’
At PNINS this is achieved through the following
strategic priorities:
• The teaching of the ‘5 Keys to School Success’
• Integrating the ‘5 Keys to School Success’ across
the four dimensions of our school – academic,
sports, performing arts, citizenship
• All students experiencing effective teaching based
on evidence based practice
• All children realising their potential and achieving
to the best of their ability
• Promoting in students a belief in the importance of
their own efforts in their achievement
• Acknowledging the achievement and efforts of all
students
• Valuing a close home school partnership in
children’s learning
• Children’s learning is nurtured by families and
whānau
Research also indicates that the ‘5 Keys to School
Success’ provides students with a positive mind-set
that helps them cope with the frustrations they
experience in learning, as well as the pressures of
growing up.
In this newsletter under ‘You Can Do It! Education’
we will look at the ‘confidence’ key to success at
school and what it means in the school setting.
These awards recognise students’ high
level of achievement in Academic and
Cultural areas of school life and reflect the
effort, high standard and quality of work
that a large number of students achieve in their daily
work. Congratulations to the students listed below
who have received Achievement Awards at our last
two Monday morning assemblies.

OF
Last Tuesday 24 students from PNINS, Turitea,
Central Normal, Aokautere, Winchester and West
End received their own Master Class as part of a
national programme aimed at encouraging children
into healthy food.
The 24 students were given a cooking lesson by New
Zealand's first Master- Chef Winner Brett McGregor.
From the PNINS perspective it further reinforces the
quality ' Food and Nutrition' Programmes delivered
by our Food Technology Specialist, Mrs Helen
Fotheringham.
The 'Let's Cook' programme is about getting children
excited about being in the kitchen and giving cooking
a go.
The programme encourages children to create meals
and then post photos of their creations online.
Schools taking part are provided with weekly recipes
accompanied by video tutorials by Mr McGregor. The
public are then able to vote on the dishes, with
$165,000 in prizes for schools and students for the
highest polling entries.
Involvement in programmes like this highlight our
school food technology programme focus which sees
students cooking healthy, nutritious family meals meals they can go home and cook themselves.
Special thanks to Mrs Fotheringham for organising
the Let’s Cook Programme with Master- Chef, Brett
McGregor. He quickly developed a wonderful rapport
with students, staff and parents and the outcome for
each group of students was a delicious salmon dish
with healthy vegetables.

SPELLING – WRITE AND RIGHT!
Year 8 (42 students sat this competition)
High Distinction (98 - 100% - PNINS)
Spelling is not an end in itself – it is part of being able
to write and be understood. Even when using a
computer, knowing how to spell is important.
Computers have spell checkers but these won’t pick
up errors in usage with words that sound the same
but are spelt differently like their and there or
through and threw.
These are essential words for spelling and writing and
should be known by all students at Intermediate
level.
Enclosed in today’s newsletter is ‘News and Views –
Spelling’ – Write and Right! It lists the 290 essential
words that make up 75% of most writing and looks at
how kids learn to spell and how you can help your
child at home.

PNINS SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FAIR
An impressive School Science and Technology Fair
was held on 15 & 16 August in the Gymnasium.
All students are to be congratulated on the standard
of investigations presented.
Many weeks of
preparation went into setting up a large number of
investigations, testing hypothesis, gathering data,
and formulating results and conclusions.
The standard of this year’s Science & Technology Fair
exhibits reflected the depth and effort of the near
660 students who entered.
FOR
Students from Palmerston North Intermediate
Normal School won University of New South Wales
awards for their academic achievement when they
participated in the recent International Competitions

YOU CAN DO IT! EDUCATION
The aim of this programme is to reinforce five keys to
success and to encourage students to develop
positive ‘Habits of the Mind’.
In today’s newsletter we focus on the Confidence Key
and explain what being confident really means and
the language we will be using to talk about the
concept.
Confidence means knowing that you are likely to be
successful at many things. It means not being afraid
to make mistakes or to try something new. Examples
of confident behaviour are raising your hand in class
to answer a hard question, attempting hard work first
before asking for help, or sharing a new idea with a
teacher or the class.
Positive Habits of the Mind that help develop a
young person’s confidence include:
• Accepting Yourself - not thinking badly about
yourself when you make a mistake or when
someone is mean; accepting yourself knowing
that you have strengths and areas for
improvement and not judging yourself on the
negatives.
• Taking Risks - wanting but not needing to be
successful in things that you think are important
to do; thinking that it’s good to try something
new, even though you might not be able to do it.
• Being Independent - wanting but not needing the
approval of others; thinking that it’s important to
try new activities and to speak up regardless of
what your classmates think
QUOTE OF THE WEEK Theme: Effort
‘You draw nothing out of the bank of life except what
you deposit in it’.
