Edition 10—23 June 2015
On 21 May our year 10 students attended the Careers Expo held in Cairns. This was a great opportunity for our students to talk to various industries about their future career options and the path that they would need to take to achieve their career goal. It was great to see our students participating in the range of activities on offer, like the TAFE beauty students offering manicures, the digger obstacle course, talking to the various university mentors about different careers, the developments of technology in agriculture of using remote controlled cameras. They were a fantastic group to take and I hope it has inspired students to think about their future. Thank you to all the teachers who came on the excursion, and to our year 10 students; you represented our school very well.

Dancing, drums and plenty of denim! Innisfail State College is gearing up for this year’s musical blockbuster, Back to the 80s . The story follows a group of teenage boys who want to ‘cut loose’, cheerleading girls who ‘just want to have fun’, and a teacher finding out his ‘angel is a centrefold’.
The staff and students of Innisfail State College have been working incredibly hard to produce a show that incorporates a killer band, fabulous dancers and outrageous actors. Director and Drama Teacher Ms Lisa Kaluza said, “If you love 80s rock, mullets and corny pop culture references, then you will certainly enjoy this show.”
The show premieres on Friday July 31 at 7pm with additional shows on
Saturday August 1 st
at 1pm and the final presentation at 7pm. Adult tickets are $10 and Child/Concession tickets are $5. Tickets are now on sale at the Innisfail State College office or by calling 4078 0222. Tickets are in demand, so be quick to get yours!
The VC STEM Camp is a fully-funded five day camp where 160 students from across
Queensland will be given the opportunity to join leading QUT researchers in exploring some of the major challenges facing our society in biology, aerospace, robotics, pharmacy, chemistry, and computational mathematics. To be selected into the program students must be a current Yr 11 student and have earned a VHA in one or more of the following subjects:
Science, Mathematics B or C. ISC’s Isabella Sharpe and Harmeet Kaur both met these requirements and are off to Brisbane in September.
The camp’s research projects are based on the work of some of QUT’s most renowned researchers. For example, the project ‘The Future of Regenerative Medicine’ will see students mentored by Professor Mia Woodruff, head of QUT's Biomaterials and Tissue Isabella Sharpe & Harmeet Kaur
Morphology Group, where students will learn to design, model and 3D print custom-made replacement body parts in QUT’s biofabrication labs and investigate cell growth in these structures.

Thank you for your support of ISC students through their semester assessment. This can be a time of anxiety for students, as their teachers work to determine how student learning is progressing, and we are deeply appreciative of the support that families provide.
Report cards for all students are being prepared by teachers. For students in years 7, 8, 9, and 10 report cards will be posted home on
Friday 26 June, so please look for them in the first week of the holidays. Students in years 11 and 12 will receive report cards in the post in week two of next term.
Also enclosed with report cards in the mail-out are other important documents:
Parent-teacher interview information
Term 3 school events calendar
Newsletter for your specific year group
School opinion survey invitation to participate
Term 3 assessment calendar for students in years 9, 10, 11 and 12
Parent-teacher interviews afford our families a valuable opportunity to discuss reported results and feedback. These will be conducted at the college library on Monday 27 July . Please use the link on our school website to make appointments to see teachers. Students are encouraged to attend these interviews to strengthen the relationship between the key stakeholders of teacher-parent-student.
The school opinion survey is conducted every year by Education Queensland. It gathers information from our parents, teachers and students (year 8 and 11 students are randomly selected to complete surveys) to help me evaluate how our school is performing. I would greatly appreciate your feedback via this online survey.
On Monday 31 August, 8 students (1 boy and 7 girls) and 2 teachers from Shimotsuma Dai Ni high school in Japan will arrive at ISC. They are participating in a study tour and will be based with us until Tuesday 4 August. Our school has hosted visitors from this school in Japan for the past 14 years. Please contact me if you would like to host a student or teacher at your house for that week. There is an allowance paid to families to help out with costs associated with hosting a visitor and showing them around our beautiful district. Email me on cmacd80@eq.edu.au if you would like more information. It’s a great experience for the whole family!
Finally, I am excited to tell you that I have been invited to work at Cairns State High School in term three, while principal Mrs Angela Toppin is on leave. This is a wonderful opportunity for our school, through me, to observe closely how another highly respected and successful school operates. I look forward to learning as much as possible during this experience and using my new knowledge to make our great college even better when I return in term four. Thank you to Mr Graham for stepping into the principalship at ISC in my absence.
I wish all our college families a relaxing and refreshing winter break and all the best for term three.
Kindest regards,
Innisfail State College held a free dress day to celebrate the 2nd state of origin game. The student council decided that it would donate part of the money raised to the Walking Wounded charity, which helps veterans and families of soldiers who did not make it back from war, to rebuild their lives through meaningful employment, networking, counselling and mentoring programs.
After school, a group of students made their way down to Jack Fossey Park to meet the Walking
Wounded team and donate $100 to the cause. They were very moved by the stories they heard and were equally impressed by the dedication of Brian Freeman and his teammates to attempt the
Great Australian Traverse for such a worthy cause.

Zumba comes to an end this week after 16 weeks of fun, booty-shaking lunchtime physical activity.
A grant sourced from Back on Track has enabled us to bring Helen Belbin to the school every
Monday to shake up our lunchtime.
ISC families are very welcome to attend our
Athletics Carnival on Friday 24 July. All students are expected to attend and participate by competing for House points or cheering on their
House teams. Look for more information about
House themes in the first newsletter next term.
