LET’S GET ACQUAINTED
By Midge Berry
Meet Barbara Boren, WOW Director of Decorations.
Born in San Diego, she began tap dancing at age 3
and danced with an entertainment group in high school.
In 1959 her talent won her the title of Miss San Diego
in a Miss Universe Contest. She taught tap and ballet
dancing at the Totten Dance Studios, then her interest
Barbara
turned to art. Her oil paintings have been shown in
several San Diego Restaurants throughout the years. Rather than being "a
starving artist", Barbara worked as a waitress for 30 years. For the past 16
years she has volunteered for RSVP, the El Cajon Senior Patrol Program, and
as a 20 year Elk, El Cajon, and volunteers at the veteran home. A "caring
woman!" And we WOW Members thank Barbara for the decorations she has
created for our dances and events.
OUR SUNSHINE LADY
Grace Lassiter
Do you know a member
who is not doing well?
Let our Sunshine Lady know
who is ill, in the hospital, or
has passed away. Please call
Grace at 858-279-2089 and
tell her the details so she can
send a card. The club likes to
send cards to our members
who are ailing to let them
know we care.
Third Thursday Afternoon Social Fun & Games
Third Thursday of every month from 2pm to 4:30pm there will be a non-alcohol social with games (Mexican Train), refreshments
and prizes. If you don’t know how to play Mexican Train, rest at ease, because it is an easy game to learn and loads of fun. If you
don’t wish to play, come on out just to socialize because we play and chat.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER
I’m delighted to report that the Nominating Committee has submitted a slate of
officers for the 2017 WOW Board of Directors which you will be voting on at the upcoming
September general meeting and picnic. Seven of the nine board members have agreed to
remain on the board, which offers experience for club activities. Dottie Zoellner will
move from Reservation’s Director to become your new President. Sheila LaPrade and
Hazel Conklin agreed to remain on as the 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents respectively. Joe
Stevens and Mary Burgert have also agreed to remain in their respective Treasurer and
Secretary positions. Director positions are two year terms. Barbara Boren (Decorations) and Barbara Gelink (Dineout Coordinator) will continue as Director’s in these positions. Gloria Chapman has agreed to become the
Reservation’s Director while Earl Oliver has agreed to fill the Director At-Large position. In addition to voting for
the 2017 Board of Directors, we will be reporting on the health and status of the club. Thank you Nigal Miller,
Sheila LaPrade, and Arthur Duffy, our nominating committee.
This year’s annual general meeting and picnic will be held at Adm. Baker picnic field on Saturday September 24th.
Yes, Saturday September 24th is correct. We elected to try Adm. Baker this year hoping that it will be cooler than
Big Rock has been the past three years. This is another “pot luck” event because Adm. Baker forbids outside
caterers servicing events on their property. We could contract with the Adm. Baker catering but their catering
services are single source and the fees are expensive and exceeds what the board considers fair and reasonable
charges. This is a no fee event, just bring something to share. As usual, water will be provided. Note: there
aren’t any electrical outlets there, but I will bring a small propane stove should something need be served hot.
Any questions, feel free to call Sheila at 619-469-1226 or myself at 619-444-0396.
We look forward to seeing everyone at this annual “state of the club” picnic so please come out to vote for our
2017 Board of Directors and to enjoy the social fun, games, and wonderful food.
Bob Walker, WOW President, 619-444-0396
