AIR CONDITIONING, REFRIGERATION AND HEATING TECHNOLOGY This program provides classroom and laboratory experiences that enable the student to become proficient in the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of commercial and residential air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating systems. Instruction includes intensive theory and application of the basic principles of electricity related to the trade, such as reading electrical diagrams and schematics; the operational characteristics of various systems and their components; use of technical manuals; diagnosis of malfunctions; repair, replacement, and/or adjustments of compressors, metering devices, temperature and pressure controls. Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Heating Technology is a planned sequence of instruction. Students use a variety of instructional methods to develop their skills, with an emphasis on hands-on activities and projects. Areas of Study: Basic Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Skills Basic Electricity Basic Skills of Refrigerant Recovery & Recycling Employability Skills Entrepreneurship Fundamentals of Refrigeration Maintenance & Repair of Heating Systems Maintenance & Repair of Residential Air Conditioning Systems Service of Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Electrical Systems Tubing, Piping, Soldering & Brazing High School Admission Requirements: Junior in High School Take the TABE test Students enrolled in this program must agree they will attend a full-time summer component, EVERY DAY, with the understanding there is no transportation. High School Program Requirements: Students will attend ½ day for 2 years. A full- time summer schedule, between the junior and senior year, is required to complete the program. Transportation for the summer is not provided. Industry Certification & State Credential Exams Students will be prepared to take an approved state and/or nationally recognized industry certification or licensure exam in their field of study. College Credit Transfer Opportunity and / or Advanced Credit Upon completion of the program and meeting eligibility requirements, including the attainment of an aligned industry credential, students may be awarded credits toward an Associate Degree by Broward College or the Florida College System. Additional college credit may be awarded with the attainment of additional industry credentials. Students must begin classes at BROWARD COLLEGE within two (2) years of the date of graduation from the program unless the college program manager waives the time limitation.
