Motion Sensing Luminaires For Stairwells And Other Public Spaces High Abuse Occupancy Sensor Lighting Products HA 2 Energy Saving Solutions – Occupancy Sensor Lighting Products As maintenance and operational expenses escalate, facility managers and building owners are continuously challenged to find ways of reducing costs by controlling energy. Public and vehicular traffic areas must have adequate light levels for proper safety and ingress/egress. Lighting in intermittently occupied areas, when properly controlled, poses the greatest potential for cost savings without sacrificing safety or performance. Many states have enacted energy saving code requirements that mandate the use of occupancy control for lighting. Specifications For optimum luminaire control and flexibility, Kenall uses the Watt Stopper ® FM-105 super high-frequency occupancy sensor (and /or equivalent) as an integral feature. In addition to its sensitivity and available control options, the component also features daylighting control that provides additional savings when the sensor detects ambient light levels greater than its daylighting set-point. Kenall offers a line of Wet Location and IP certified products for use with occupancy sensors in applications where energy saving potential is substantial. Since the motion sensor is placed behind the lens, the luminaire is able to maintain its aesthetic appeal, IP rating and Kenall's Peace of Mind Guarantee®. This application guide has been developed to provide fixture and sensor details, installation tips and product solutions for the greatest energy savings. Kenall offers a wide assortment of luminaires with an integral occupancy sensor that provides facility managers and building owners energy saving solutions to a variety of applications with intermittent traffic. www. kenall.com P: 800-4-Kenall F: 847-360-1781 1020 Lakeside Drive Gurnee, Illinois 60031 The Kenall product shown on this page is manufactured in the USA with components purchased from US suppliers, and meets the Buy American requirements under the ARRA. To maximize energy savings, special attention should be given to luminaire location in relation to unintended objects that could trigger a false fixture activation such as windows, nearby moving plants, pedestrians or traffic passing by (see illustrations below). Recommended application Good applications No exterior windows in corridors or stairwells that nearby pedestrian or vehicular traffic may cause a false triggering of the fixture. An enclosed corridor or stairwell with a source for daylight can also provide optimum use of the daylight hold-off feature. Non-recommended application Luminaires with occupancy sensors that are installed too close to windows can result in sporadic false activation of the fixtures Applications with possible issues Luminaires with occupancy sensors that are installed too close to exterior windows or unintended objects can result in sporadic false activation of the fixtures, reduced energy savings and a premature reduction of lamp life. Outside traffic, pedestrians and swaying trees can cause the luminaire to stay on. www. kenall.com P: 800-4-Kenall F: 847-360-1781 1020 Lakeside Drive Gurnee, Illinois 60031 The Kenall product shown on this page is manufactured in the USA with components purchased from US suppliers, and meets the Buy American requirements under the ARRA. Depending on the installation, it can be adjusted to detect occupancy up to 20 feet away. The sensor is installed inside the luminaire so that it is completely hidden from direct view. Its integrated daylight sensitivity adjusts from 2 to 200 footcandles and its time delay may be set from 10 seconds to 30 minutes. The sensor operates at 120 or 277 VAC and utilizes SHF technology to control lighting based on occupancy. It sends out electromagnetic waves that bounce off nearby surfaces and uses the Doppler principle to analyze changes in the return waves to detect motion in the area (similar to the way that ultrasonic sensor technology performs). When motion is detected, the sensor turns on the load, unless the ambient light level is greater than the daylighting setpoint (if enabled), or turns off the load when no motion is detected for the preset time delay. Adjustable time delay Adjustable detection sensitivity Hold-off daylighting control Sensor Coverage Area Ceiling Mount Sensor Coverage Area Wall Mount 18' 18' 12' 6' 12' Sensor inside ceiling mount fixture at 8' height MIN. 3' MAX. 20' 6' MAX. MIN. 0 Control Adjustments Time delay – The sensor automatically turns off the light after the coverage area has been vacant for the selected time delay. For high traffic areas, the time delay should be set close to minimum levels. Low traffic areas, to maximum energy savings, the time delay should be set closer to the maximum settings. The sensor provides a 10 second to 30 minute range of adjustability. Sensitivity – The sensor has a range of 0 to 20 feet. It is able to sense through solid objects, glass and dense materials. Once the sensitivity is set to the desired level, the luminaire should be tested to determine if the sensor detects movement correctly. The sensor setting can be adjusted up or down for the correct application. Light Level – Adjust the daylight setting if the installation has sufficient ambient light in the area to keep the lights and luminaire off. Set the time delay to minimum and then adjust the daylight setting to the appropriate level. The daylight setting can be adjusted up or down (2 to 200 footcandles) for the correct application with separate adjustment to the time delay setting. Note: The sensor’s daylight hold-off feature will override the sensitivity control setting, keeping the fixture off, if sufficient ambient daylight is present.
