Watch Instructions Thank you for choosing an Animal freesports watch. We at Animal are justly proud of our reputation for producing stylish, durable, British-designed freesports watches. Every Animal watch-case is machined from durable and hypo-allergenic marine-grade stainless steel, (which we introduced to the freesports watch industry) encasing a Japanese high precision movement, producing a stylish, accurate, durable performance watch. Our technical watches - ana-digits, chronographs, and RIP System watches - are built to the same no-compromise Animal standards as our standard models, but also provide additional technical features, with our RIP System watches being powered not by traditional disposable batteries but purely by energy generated from the wearer’s natural movements. All Animal watches come with a one year guarantee, with our high-performance models having a 2 year guarantee. These models can be distinguished by their screw-down crowns (winders), and are designed and manufactured to an even higher standard to handle even harsher conditions. IMPORTANT If your watch has a screw-down crown (‘winder’), please ensure that it is screwed down at all times. Animal watches are highly water resistant, but many problems with water resistance occur due to unintentional consumer error – please always remember to check that your crown (winder) is fully screwed down at all times, as water damage caused because the crown was left unlocked is not covered by your warranty. Guarantee In addition to your statutory rights as a consumer, Animal offers a guarantee to the original purchaser from an authorised retailer. Your Animal watch is guaranteed by Animal under the terms and conditions of this guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 1 year from the date of original purchase. For models with screw-down crowns the guarantee is 2 years. This guarantee does not cover: • Battery, case, crystal, strap or bracelet, or finishes or plating; • Damage resulting from improper handling, lack of care, accidents, or normal wear and tear. The guarantee is void if the watch has been damaged by accident, negligence, unauthorised service, or other factors not due to defects in materials or workmanship. In case of replacement, Animal cannot guarantee that you will receive the same model watch. If your model is not available, a watch of equal value and similar appearance will be provided. Care of your Animal watch Although all our watches are designed and manufactured to meet the demanding requirements of freesports use, following some simple rules will prolong the life of your watch: • This watch contains a precision electronic movement. Do not open the watch, or attempt to remove the case-back. • Any and all work, including battery replacement, required within the guarantee period must be carried out by Animal, otherwise your warranty will be invalidated. • Rubber seals are used to seal the case against dust and moisture. As rubber can be affected by certain chemicals, it is important to have the watch pressure-tested annually. • Every 2-3 years, the seals should be replaced to ensure that the watch remains watertight. Should water or condensation appear in the watch, have the watch checked immediately, as water can irreparably damage the electronic components. • Do not expose the watch to extremes of temperature, or rapid changes of temperature. • Although the watch is designed to withstand impact under normal use, it must not be subjected to severe impacts, or dropped onto hard surfaces. • Only clean the case with a soft cloth, moistened with water. Do not use chemicals, solvents or soap, as these can seriously damaged the seals and finish of your watch. • Always store the watch in a dry place. • Do not expose the watch to strong chemicals such as petrol, solvents or adhesives, as these can seriously damage both the waterproof seals, and the finish of your watch. • After any use in salt water, immediately rinse your watch in a stream of fresh water. • If your watch has a rotating bezel, turn the bezel several times whilst rinsing it, as this will prevent salt build-up underneath the bezel ring. Water resistance This watch has been designed, manufactured, and tested for water-resistance to the depth stated on the case: • Water-resistant to 50 metres (165 feet) Suitable for showering or swimming in shallow water. • Water- resistant to 100 metres (330 feet Suitable for swimming and snorkelling. • Water- resistant to 200 metres (660 feet) Suitable for skin diving. Please note that Animal does NOT recommend the use of any of our watches for diving, as they are manufactured for use during surface watersports and swimming only. They must not be used for sub-aqua sports, as the dynamic pressure generated by underwater activity will exceed the static pressure at the same depth, and may cause the seals to fail. We recommended that you do not wear your Animal watch in a very hot shower, sauna or hot-tub, as the extreme heat can cause the metal components to expand at a different rate to the rubber gaskets. This can create tiny openings that can allow water droplets to penetrate the watch. Sudden temperature changes are especially harsh. Take care not to jump into a cold pool after wearing your watch in hot water. All High Performance Animal watches are fitted with a screw-down crown (‘winder’), which acts like a submarine hatch, completely sealing the case against dust and moisture. Before the time or date can be adjusted on these models, the crown must be unscrewed by turning it anti-clockwise until it springs out away from the case. Once the time/date is correct, the crown must be resealed, by simultaneously pushing it inwards whilst turning it clockwise gently until it locks. Under no circumstances leave the crown unlocked or adjust the time or date whilst the watch is submerged. Instructions If your Animal watch has a date feature: - If necessary, unlock the crown as described above, and then pull it gently until you feel the first click. - Turn the crown to advance the date to one day prior to today’s date. - Gently pull the crown out one more click, and turn the crown to adjust the time displayed, until the date display changes to indicate today’s date. - The time indicated should be approximately midnight (i.e. between 11.30 and 12.30). - Now continue turning the crown until the correct time is displayed. This procedure ensures that the date always changes at midnight. - Please note that Animal watches do not adjust automatically for months with less than 31 days; this must be done manually, following the above procedure. - To complete the operation, reseal the crown as described above, if necessary. To adjust the time: - If necessary, unlock the crown as described above, and then pull it gently until you feel the second click. - Advance the time by turning the crown until the correct time is displayed, noting whether it is morning or afternoon. - To complete the operation, reseal the crown as described above, if necessary. If your Animal watch has a rotating bezel (top-ring): - Some Animal watches are fitted with a uni-directional bezel, which can be used as a basic countdown timer. - Turn the bezel anti-clockwise until the large marker on the bezel is aligned with the minute hand. - The bezel is now set to count down 60 minutes; as the minute hand moves, the time remaining can be read from the bezel. Chronograph instructions (Watches with stopwatches) - The dial on the right indicates the 24-hour period. - The lower dial indicates the seconds being counted by the chronograph. - The dial on the left indicates the minutes being counted by the chronograph. - The chronograph can record timings up to 59 minutes and 59 seconds. When the timer reaches 1 hour, the chronograph will stop recording altogether. To operate the chronograph: - Press the top pusher once. - The chronograph will start running, displaying the elapsed time. - Pressing the top pusher again will stop the chronograph, while a further press will restart it. - Pressing the bottom pusher will reset the chronograph if it is currently stopped. Using the split timing function: - The chronograph is started at the beginning of the event, and when the first competitor finishes, the bottom pusher is pressed. - The chronograph mechanism continues to run, although the hands will be paused, displaying the time taken by the first competitor. - Then, press the button pusher again. - When the second competitor finishes the event, the top pusher is pressed. - The chronograph will then be stopped, displaying the time taken by the second competitor. - To reset the chronograph to zero, press the bottom pusher. RIP Instructions (Watches with glass case-backs). If your watch is a RIP System model: - If your Animal watch has a glass case-back, it is one of our RIP System models. - If it has a solid metal case-back, it is a conventional battery-powered model. Animal RIP System watches aren’t powered by a traditional disposable battery but by energy generated from the wearer’s natural movements. The wearer’s movements cause a weight (which can be seen through the watch’s glass case-back) to pivot around its centre. The energy from this movement is then amplified by a miniature gear-train and then transferred to the generator. The energy produced by the generator is then stored in a special capacitor, which behaves like a miniature rechargeable battery, powering the watch. As the RIP System watches don’t rely on conventional batteries, they will continue to function almost indefinitely without requiring servicing or battery replacement. When the capacitor is fully charged, a RIP System watch can power itself for around six months without requiring any attention, or needing to be worn. 2-second ticking – low charge warning system: The second hand will start to move in two-second jumps should the charge fall below a certain level, indicating that the watch needs to be worn in order to recharge the capacitor. No harm will come to the watch if the capacitor runs down and the watch stops; simply shake it gently for a minute or so to charge the capacitor, and set it to the correct time. Initially, the second hand will jump in two-second intervals, indicating that the watch is low on power, although this will stop after a little while as the watch charges itself from your movements. The exact time taken for the watch to reach full charge will depend on how much you move.
