HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PREP SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD RECORD 1947 SEASON Eleventh Annual Edition j RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF THE LATE C.L. GLENN Educator, Athletic Official A Builder Of Young Americans Prepared By HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION Los Angeles, C a l i f o r n i a PAUL H. HELMS, FOUNDER AND SPONSOR Issued July l947 HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION SO. CALIF. PREP SCHOOL TRACK RECORD, 1947 This record of outstanding performances by Southern California's prep school track and field athletes, for the 1947 season, is the Eleventh Annual edition issued by Helms Athletic Foundation. The facts and records listed herein have been gathered from sources which are believed to be correct. Information has been provided by coaches of schools, and has also been secured from the Southern California daily newspapers and the school newspapers. Helms Athletic Foundation is sponsored by Paul H. Helms of Los Angeles. One of the purposes of Helms Athletic Foundation is that of recording the achievements of Southern California's athletes and athletic teams, in all sports, and in all divisions. This Southern California Prep School Track and Field Record, and athletic record books of similiar nature, are prepared by Helms Athletic Foundation, under the supervision of W. R. Schroeder, Managing Director, and are distributed to the Press, Radio, Schools, athletic officials, and others without cost. HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION,117 Vest 9th St., Los Angeles 15 SPRINGER, BRADLEY AND MCELHENNY CHOSEN TRACK ATHLETES OF YEAR FOR '47 Henry Springer, huge 6 ft. 4 in., 235 pound weightman from Compton College, was selected as J,.ysee Track"iithlete of the Year"by the Helms All-Southern California Board of Track and Field. Springer pushed the lo-pound iron ball out 50 ft. 9 5/8 in. in the West Coast Relays at Fresno, just a little more than 3 inches short of the National Jaysee mark. Ho recorded several throws better than 50ft. and established new records at Fresno, the Conference Meet, and in several dual meets. He also had a best toss of 133 ft. in the discus. John Bradley, twin winner in the State sprints, wins the nod as C. I. F.'s best trackman of 1947. ^he Glendale Hoover flash, who was only beaten once this year, sped the century in 9«9s. and the furlong in 21.3s. at Visalia. With the aid of wind Bradley turned in 9«7s. and 21.1s, sprint times, in the C. I. F. Me t at Oxnard. It was Bradley.'s brilliant performances that were largely responsible-for Glendale Hoover's- winning of the Southern California title. ' ' .. •-.- • .- . - There was no doubt about- the selection of Washington's Hugh McElhenny as the City's top spikester. McElhenny became the first prepster to v/in a triple in the State Meet since Frsnk Wykoff took a trio of triumphs in 1927 when he won the hurdles and the broad jump. The 6 ft., 190 pound youth also won three firsts in the City Meet and in all nine meets in which he competed. McElhenny tied Joe Batiste's .national interscholastic record of 14.0s. in the 39" highs in th^ Jefferson dual meet. His best tine of 19.2s. in the 130 yard lows is the third best on record, and he leaped 22 ft. lO^in. in- the broad jump. - YEAR JUNIOR COLLEGE C, I, F.
