Introduction
Introduction:
Today, technology advancements in different areas with contemporary modern methods of production has changed world economy as
well as the relationship between the countries. If in the past, the natural
resources were considered as an indicator of superiority and power, today technology advancements determine the position of each country.
Therefore resource-rich countries, without such technologies, are practically categorized as underdeveloped. For example, in the Ivory Coast,
the largest cocoa producer in the world, provides 34.4 percent of world
cocoa. Switzerland produces the highest quality chocolate using high
technology. Switzerland’s added value in the industry is more than the
Ivory Coast. Although the natural resources are considered as a relative
advantage for a country, it will not be significant without it relating to
technology.
Nanotechnology is an emerging technology widely used in different areas. One of the advantages of the technology is its applications
in different industries. While some technologies are used only in specific applications, nanotechnology is not limited to certain fields and
it is possible to be used in all aspects of sciences. Hence the Iranian
Nanotechnology Initiative Council (INIC) held “National Capabilities in
Nanotechnology Fair” in 2008.
The exhibition introduced Iran’s existing capabilities in nanotechnology and the public, developed public understanding of nanotechnology. Which in result increased the interaction between the active units
in nanotechnology, attracting many investors and assisted in technology
transfer agreements. The large number of visitors as well as remarkable
scientific and technological achievements encouraged INIC to hold the
second national capabilities in nanotechnology fair in 2009. The exhi-

As mentioned earlier, nanotechnology has extensive applications in
various sciences. In medicine, nanotechnology facilitates new ways of
treatment through new drug delivery systems. In medical imaging, nanotechnology based devices take more accurate images from cancerous
tumors which might lead to a dramatic change in the treatment of cancer.
One of the most important applications of nanotechnology is the environment where nanoparticles significantly increase the efficiency of groundwater pollutants filtration. Promising applications of nanotechnology is
the environment is enormous, but most applications are:
• Environmentally safe products, for example green chemistry;
• Filtration materials that are contaminated with hazardous particles;
In the automotive sector, there is a growing demand for nanoscale
technologies because of its high performance and efficiency, and in
safety and emissions standards. Nanotechnology is currently providing
solutions to unwanted heat transfer from the engine and fuel assembly
components of vehicles; it would help to cool the interior of vehicles,
allowing less work to be done by a cooling systems which is result consumes less fuel consumption as a result.
Applications of nanotechnology have the potential to change the entire agriculture sector and food industry chain from production to conservation, processing, packaging, transportation, and even waste treatment. Nanotechnology has the potential to redesign the production cycle,
Including the restructuring process and conservation processes which
redefine the food habits of people. In the near future, nano structured
catalysts will be available which will increase the efficiency of pesticides
and herbicides, allowing lower doses to be used.
Nanotechnology in the Islamic Republic of Iran
The initial spark of nanotechnology in Iran was struck in 2000 when
the Nanotechnology Policy Studies Committee was formed. In the fall
of 2003, Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council (INIC) officially was
established, inspired by national leadership nanotechnology programs in
many countries around the world.
The strategic plan of nanoscience and technology provides the outline of nationwide activities in this field from 2005 to 2015. This was
called “The Future Strategy”, which was approved by the government
cabinet in July 2005, and explains the vision of nano-science and technology development of Iran. The vision is the following:
“For materialization of the twenty year vision of the Islamic Republic
of Iran, the software movement and the improvement of level, quality

bition consists of more than one hundred exhibitors from universities,
research centers, the government agencies and industries which will
show their achievements. Moreover, the numerous meetings, variety of
workshops, lectures by experts, public educations and nanotechnology
top festival will also be held at this exhibition.

Introduction
and security of people’s life, in ten years horizon, the Islamic Republic
the Islamic republic of Iran will be a developed country in terms of nanotechnology with the following:
•Local advanced infra-structures and enjoying higher share of expert
human resources
•Having effective and constructive internal and international interactions
•Generator of economic added value resulting from nanotechnology
•Enjoying competition capability at global level”
Determining of national priorities, overcoming the obstacles in the
program, providing facilities in nano-areas were the INIC main duties.
Main goals, strategies and structure of overall-management of nanotechnology development are clearly stated in this plan. Ten years horizon of the future strategy is divided into four periods:
In the first 3 years period, 53 programs have been implemented.
Based on their evaluation, the second complementary plan for the next
three years was provided and approved. In this plan, the programs are
categorized into a series of topics covering all wealth creation steps, that
includes from proposal to market. The private sector role in development
of nanotechnology in Iran is highlighted in this plan.
Topics are as follows:
1. Policy Making and Evaluation
2. Publicity and increasing public awareness
3. Scientific and Technological Infrastructures
4. Scientific and Technological Initiative
5. Technology Transfer and development
6. Production and Market
This plan, including 33 programs, considering international interactions in various approaches. The followings are the most important measures taken by INIC to escalate the international interactions:
1. Enhancement of International Scientific and Technological
Collaboration:
In the Future Strategy plan, the improvement of scientific and technological collaborations with other countries is encouraged.
2. International Sharing of Laboratorial Services:
The INIC encourages international collaboration of nanotechnology
laboratories. International sharing of laboratorial services, construction
of experimental equipment and development of crucial technologies in
collaboration with developed centers worldwide which are supported by
the INIC.
3. Enhancement of International Investments in Nanotechnology
The INIC intends to attract more foreign investments in nanotechnology considering domestic advantages such as professional human
resources, appropriate infrastructures and sustainable support policies by
government.
4. Supporting Agencies to Expand International Interactions
The INIC supports national nanotechnology agencies by, for instance,
finding international partners, facilitating participation in international

fairs and markets and opening new international collaborations with other scientific, technological and industrial centers of nanotechnology.

INIC main mission
INIC’s main mission is to achieve a rank among the top ten pioneers
of nanoscience and technology by 2015 which seemed hard to fulfill in
its early days. In the first six month of 2009, Iran ranked the 15th country
for promoting nanosciences around the world (4 years earlier than it’s
predicted time). Iran published 813 nano-articles in ISI journals (1.3% of
all articles published in 2008 by Iranian scholars) showed 73% growth
respected to 2007.
This is a very promising start, and it can be predicted that, at the
end of the planned period, Iran has the potential to reach at least the 10th
place. Publishing scientific articles on nanotechnology was not the main
focus of INIC goals and has been regarded as an intermediate goal. This
goal was of high concern during the early days of the start-up.
In the case of patents, Iran published 4 patents and had applications,
ranked 45th in the world.

Promoting companies in nanotechnology
The Iran Nano Business Network (INBN) was established in 2006
to promote active companies in nanotechnology as well as to increase
interaction and cooperation between companies in the field. INBN is a
collection of Iranian companies that work in the field of Nanotechnology.
INBN’s aim is to create cooperation amongst Iranian nanotechnology
companies in order to achieve common goals such as high standard
brand, efficient development & innovation, active commercialization
and investment. The priorities of INBN are to provide business information & opportunities and facilitate members> access to different services
worldwide. INBN has initiated an information center for companies,
products, equipments and services in the field of Nanotechnology. The
center introduces all necessary information about local and international
markets, investment opportunities, Nanomarket analysis, related tenders
and consulting services.
INBN provides all the following facilities for the members to achieve
their aims more directionally:
• Cooperating and joint venture investments of Iranian and International companies
• Nanotechnology transfer
• Encouraging international companies dealing with Iran to establish
units of research and development of nanotechnology
• Marketing for research and technology capabilities
• Promoting and developing Technology
• Laboratory services
• Tax encouraging
Nanotechnology National Capabilities Exhibition
In 2008, the INIC established the first exhibition in the field of nanotechnology. It was going to be held with the purpose of commercializing
the nanotechnology in Iran. The exhibition was indeed an assembly for

introducing, technologies, services, new techniques and innovations to
authorities, researchers, manufacturers and the general public. It brought
the domestic potentials in nanotechnology and new production methods
to the public which resulted in more investment attraction and contracts
signed for technology transfer.
In the exhibition, products, facilities and national innovations in nanotechnology were brought to the public eye by more than 100 stands in
a 5000 m2 space.
The followings are displayed in the exhibition:
• Nanotechnology products (in industrial and pilot scale)
• Production methods improved by nanotechnology
• Patents, books, papers, and successful nano-based research projects
• Pilot technology-based researches

1-Nano concrete with thermal properties: This concrete sample is part of
an intelligent system which can detect the low temperature. The system
will then command to the heating unit to send electrical current to the
metallic elements. The metallic elements are inserted into the concrete
block. As a result a concrete block becomes warm. Such a system is very
suitable for pavement (such as airport pavements) in cold environments
2- Durable nano-concrete: A research was performed on the effects of
nano particles on durability of concrete were conducted. In this study
various kinds of nano particles were added to the concrete and cement
paste mixture 3- nano-concrete with low water absorption: This type of
material is useful for concrete piles in ports, retaining walls in saturated
soils and etc. 4- nano-concrete with high erosion toughness: Such a
material is very useful for pavements and hydraulic structures. 5-Related

These products are synthesized by ultrasonic apparatus and step curing
and calcinated at 500 to 1000 C. The DTG and TG, FTIR, XRD, SEM and
TEM were used to characterize the crystallization process, the particle
size and morphology of the calcinated powders. The results indicated
that the nanopowders with particle size between 30 to 60 nanometers.

Determined. NX-50 can be used as catalyst in petrochemical industry,
controlling air and water pollution, synthesis of special chemical
materials, ion exchange and molecular sieves. 2- NC-SM: core-shell
nanostructure synthesized in mild condition by reducing method and
characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR Spectroscopy, TEM and
SEM microscopy. Estimated the particle size of these materials was 1-10
nm 3- HNP-M: Hybrid Nanocomposite coatings containing nonmetals,
can be used to create resistant surface against of crash, nonreflective and
corrosion on the different metals surface 4- NZ-T and NZ-Z: Titanium
oxide and Zinc oxide nano particles prepared by sol-gel process with 5-15
dimensional in the zeolite substrate .This product have photocatalytic
properties and can be used for environmental Photocatalyst and solar
to electrical energy transformers, photochemical analysis water, and
remove pollution.

In this research, a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and an on-line
purification method for the production of highly purified carbon
nanotubes (CNTs) are presented. In this method a two furnace CVD
system is used with acetylene, and ferrocene and hydrogen to produce
CNTs. These are then carried to the on-line purification system by
argon carrier gas. The purification system consists of a third furnace
with prior introduction of oxygen to the production line, an ultraviolet
and microwave irradiators. Several vibrators prevent the sticking of the
nanotube bundles to the inner walls of the quartz tube. Magnets are also
used to attract iron nanoparticles. The purity of the product reaches to
more than 99% at the end of the line as determined by thermogravimetry
and Raman spectroscopy.

2009
1- Ferro fluid based on iron oxide was synthesized in contact with air by coprecipitation. The results indicated that the magnetic particles had average size of
10.6 nm consist of maghemite as major and magnetite as minor phase.
2- Al2O3 and MgO were used for support and Fe as catalyst to grow the CNTs by
CVD method under the methane gas flow. The results revealed that all types of CNT’s
(MW, DW, SW) were produced, due to different route of preparation for catalyst,
growth temperature end etc.
3- Nanocrystalline alumina powders have been synthesized through a new sol–gel
simplified method. The particle size of nano alumina was in the range of 15–30 nm.
4- Crystalline ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized by mechanochemical method.
Average particle size estimated to be less than 50 nm.
5- Nano Magnesia- Carbon brick for steel making was manufactured
6- A hybrid nano - resin based on nano - carbon and novalak resin
7- For achieve the exfoliated structure, after purify of the nanoclay, its modification
with organic materials.
8- Modified nanoclays (Organoclays) can sorb 7 times as much oil as activated
carbon.
9- Nano sized Aluminium Titanate (Tialite - Al2TiO5) synthesized by sol-gel
chemical processing route for high- tech. industries
10- Nano sized Hydroxy Apatite (HAP) synthesized by sol-gel method for high-tech.
biomedical applications
11- Synthesis of fluorohydroxy apatite by hydrothermal method and evaluation of
biological properties
12- Molybdenum oxide converted to molybdenum nitride through TPR method under
NH3 gas flow and controlled temperature program.
The particle size is under 10 nm.

Description about products/ services in nanotechnology
Nanobiotechnology research group enjoys two laboratories, nanobiotechnology
and nanomemberane, equipped by advanced instruments including devices for
synthesizing of chemical and biological materials in any dimensions from macro up
to nano scales, types of microscopes etc. Also, there are devices in this laboratory
for synthesis of carbon nanotubes by arc-discharge method in solution automatically
and also fabrication of nanosensors for different gas and liquid detection. Among
group products nearly ten products are capable to be industrialized. So required
preliminaries for industrialization has been done such as industrial production
of different kinds of nano filters, carbon nano tubes and bone and teeth filler
nanoparticles. Also, design and manufacturing of full automatic equipment of arcdischarge in liquid media and NBG fluidized bed adsorption for purification of
nano bioproducts have been done in this group. Total and sale costs of all of these
products are at least half of the price for foreign products at the same class.

NRC is an R&D center in Tehran University of Medical Sciences which
offers new fields including: 1- Preparation of Docetaxel as PLGA
nanoparticles: Docetaxel is an anticancer agent in the taxoid family that
shows very low solubility. The only available formulation for clinical
use of docetaxel consists of high concentration of tween 80. To avoid
the use of high concentration of tween 80, the preparation of polymeric
nanoparticles containing docetaxel may be considered. 2- Preparation
of Docetaxel (as an anticancer drug) conjugated with HAS:Albuminconjugation of docetaxel is another way to remove tween 80 with
increased cell toxicity and blood circulation time.

series of processes in hydration process. In hydrophobic surfaces project
we also use iron nanoparticles.

Here we report a series of studies on the synthesis and conjugation of Quantum dots
and magnetic beads with monoclonal antibodies and their applications in detection
of ovarian cancer biomarker, HER2. Monoclonal antibodies against HER2 were
produced by standard hybridoma technology and conjugated to Quantum dot 525 or
nano magnetic particles using novel conjugation methods. Conjugates were traced
in ovarian cancer cell lines and tissues by different techniques. Our results showed
that Quantum dot conjugates are very sensitive probes with long-lasting fluorescence
signals which make early detection of tumor markers easily feasible. Atomic Force
Microscopic (AFM) experiments clearly showed that synthesized quantum dots are
in nano scale ranging in size from 2 to10 nm and these particles exhibited excellent
brightness with rainbow colors under UV illumination. Magnetic bead conjugates
recognized HER2 on ovarian cancer cells invitro and also in invivo MRI imaging. It
is for the first time that these diagnostic approaches are introduced.

The Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) is a non-optical microscope
that scans an electrical probe over a surface to be imaged to detect a
weak electric current flowing between the tip and the surface. The STM

lattice. Previous methods required arduous study of diffraction patterns

Polyamidoamine (PAMAM) can serve as versatile nanoscale platforms
for creating multifunctional devices capable of detecting cancer
and delivering drugs. This nano smart carrier can indeed deliver
anticancer drugs to tumors. In this study we synthesized folatepolyamidoamine(G2.5)-methotrexate(MTX) for the purpose of nano drug
delivery. Since cancer cells have a high-affinity folic acid receptor on
their surface we used folate for targeting the receptor and methotrexate as
the therapeutic agent. We demonstrated that in MTX-sensitive and MTXresistant Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell lines polyamidoamine(acidterminated G2.5)-methotrexate conjugate showed an increased drug
activity compared to an equimolar amount of free MTX. Amide-bonded
between the PAMAM-G2.5-COOH and the NH2 of MTX has showed
higher cytotoxicity compare to free drug.

1-Quartz Crystal Nanobalance (QCN) QCN is a precision balance,
which can measure an extremely small amounts of material deposited
on a solid surface in a nanoscale level. The frequency of the vibration
is proportional to the applied electric potential across a quartz crystal,
which is in turn based on an inverse piezoelectric effect. Multifrequency
QCN has found use in many areas of academic and industrial research,
including determination of environmental pollutant and biomaterials,
surface chemistry, polymer and biotechnology research, cell adhesion,
drug delivery study and gas adsorption, just to name a few.
2- Nanocomposite preparation of new epoxy-based nanocomposite
with improved impact properties were for automotive and aerospace
applications, preparation of a new nanocomposite named thermoset/
thermoplastic was obtained with incorporation of Poly-acrylonitrileco-butadiene-co-styrene (ABS), into epoxy matrix, preparation of
epoxy/ABS/clay ternary nanocomposite and epoxy/ABS/clay/TiO2
nanocomposite, correlation between microstructure and mechanical
properties of the nanocomposite was studied using XRD, SEM and
AFM.

Isfahan science and technology center to produce a saffron spray for
edible use in order to increase efficacy of saffron (saffron stigma) and
make an optimum benefit of it.
This company succeeded in this technology with research team of 12
people, including 5 professors of Isfahan University of Technology, and
2 MSc. graduates and 3 BSc. graduates of food science and technology in
cooperation with central Lab of Ferdosi University of Mashhad.
All this attainments resulted in considerable increase in exploitation of
saffron for producing saffron spray.
Among these attainments are increasing extraction of color, odor and
flavor out of saffron powder, also eliminating filtration in the process of

One of the activities of Niroo research institute is the
implementation of fundamental, practical and, developmental
research projects planed to achieve the technical knowledge
needed for the Ministry of Energy inside the country, considering
the principle of extending high stability.
Due to the advantages of nano technology for efficiency
improvement, reduction of energy consumption and
miniaturization of manufactured instruments, Niroo research
institute enters this field in order to solve deficiencies existing in
the country electrical power industry and to improve the quality
of products used in this industry too.
The following purpose of the proposal for the project of
manufacturing ZnO varistors was approved at this institute
and conducted for four years until the final results were finally
achieved in 1387 after laboratory processing and semi-industrial
testing. Another project also fulfilled at Niroo Research Institute
aimed at investigating nano technology applications in electrical
power industry. The project of commercializing nano-products to
utilize in Yazd province and the project of manufacturing nanosolar cells are also now being accomplished at this institute.

The NanoRis can spin a variety of biopolymers into nanofibers. Various
nanofibers such as smooth-surface, porous-surface, beaded, core-sheath
and ultra-thin ones can be created. Nanofibers of different orientations
and forms such as non-woven cloth, aligned materials, and aligned
multi-layer materials can be manufactured. Different spinnerets and
collectors can be combined and replaced. Parameters to spin nanofibers
can be quickly and easily programmed with the operation panel on the
setup. Safety devices are equipped with the spinning chamber; A safety
interlock on using a high voltage power supply Exhausting and filtering
system for operators.
