This large variety in type of power supply is mainly driven by different application requirements, but is also affected by industry regulations, the laws of physics and market trends. A first split can be made between internal and external of a cabinet/application housing and then drilling down to On-Board and Off-Board when it comes to the location in the application. If the application is in transportation, AC/DC power supplies need to comply to specific international safety and EMC directives for use in railway, light or heavy industrial, medical or general ITC/computer equipment. Power supplies for medical applications now need to meet the June 2012 transitioned IEC 60601 1:2005 protocol also known as the Third Edition. LED drivers, desktop and plug-in adaptors also need to be compliant with recent new Green-Power ErP directives for harmonics distortion, zero-load and standby power. A split can be made between internal or external of a cabinet or application housing and drilling down to On-Board and Off-Board when it comes to the location in the application or electronic system. Generally most DC/DC converters are On-Board and used for 2 main reasons; to either create other, lower or higher stable DC voltage(s) than the source, and the second is to create an isolation barrier for safety reasons, protecting against high surges and discharges from outside. The commonly used On-Board bus voltages in power distribution architectures for large communication systems are stepped down by DC/DC converters or IBC’s (Intermediate Bus Converters) to the input range of niPOLs (non-isolated Point of Load Converters) to make extreme low voltages at high currents for the high on-board energy demands. This is also the area where digital power is utilised for both digital control of the DC/ DC circuitry as well as for PMBus measurements, control and signalling. For Off-Board and Transportation, new models with ultra wide inputs have been introduced, including boxed power in fan-less IP67 enclosed housings. Trends in On-board DC/DC converters are higher densities and wider input ranges. 1x1’’ industrial standard and the 1/16th brick is increasingly popular with 18-75V or 9-36V input ranges.
