POWER
Although power supplies all have the same basic functionality, converting the mains
AC voltage or Battery DC voltage into one or more DC output voltages, they come
in many different shapes and sizes. This large variety in type of power supply is
mainly driven by different application requirements, but is also affected by industry
regulations, the laws of physics and market trends.
Avnet Abacus supplies a comprehensive range of standard power supply
products supporting an almost limitless number of applications, markets and volt/
amp requirements.
Our standard range of power supplies and converters includes open frame, front end,
conducted-cooled mounting, DIN-rail, modular and configurable, external adapter,
panel and chassis mount, LED driver and market specific power supply units.

POWER SUPPLIES FOR ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS
AC/DC power supplies are available in a wide variety of models
with many application specific features. A first split can be made
between internal and external of a cabinet/application housing
and then drilling down to On-Board and Off-Board when it
comes to the location in the application.
If the application is in transportation, AC/DC power supplies
need to comply to specific international safety and EMC
directives for use in railway, light or heavy industrial, medical or
general ITC/computer equipment.
Power supplies for medical applications now need to meet
the June 2012 transitioned IEC 60601 1:2005 protocol also
known as the Third Edition.
LED drivers, desktop and plug-in adaptors also need to
be compliant with recent new Green-Power ErP directives for
harmonics distortion, zero-load and standby power.
Many other applications do have, or will get, new Green
Power ECO directives for efficient energy use, zeroload and
standby power conditions.
Some markets such as transportation require improved
shock, vibration and conformal coating features.

rough conditions for OFF-BOARD DC/DC converters
DC/DC converters in Off-Board and Transportation applications
are a building block in a wide but commonly standardised variety.
A split can be made between internal or external of a cabinet or
application housing and drilling down to On-Board and Off-Board
when it comes to the location in the application or electronic
system.
Generally most DC/DC converters are On-Board and used for
2 main reasons; to either create other, lower or higher stable DC
voltage(s) than the source, and the second is to create an isolation
barrier for safety reasons, protecting against high surges and
discharges from outside.
The commonly used On-Board bus voltages in power
distribution architectures for large communication systems are
stepped down by DC/DC converters or IBC’s (Intermediate Bus
Converters) to the input range of niPOLs (non-isolated Point of
Load Converters) to make extreme low voltages at high currents
for the high on-board energy demands. This is also the area
where digital power is utilised for both digital control of the DC/
DC circuitry as well as for PMBus measurements, control and
signalling.
For Off-Board and Transportation, new models with ultra wide
inputs have been introduced, including boxed power in fan-less
IP67 enclosed housings. Trends in On-board DC/DC converters are
higher densities and wider input ranges. 1x1’’ industrial standard
and the 1/16th brick is increasingly popular with 18-75V or 9-36V
input ranges.

EMC
Every electronic and electrical device or application uses some form of electricity to
perform its function. Whilst powering a system, electricity also generates unwanted
electromagnetic energy or radiation which causes electric and magnetic fields that
can affect the operation of the device that you are powering. This electromagnetic
interference must be controlled within the product design process in order to
achieve electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Filters and magnetics play a vital role
in reducing conducted interference.
The EMC filter is applied to minimise the conducted emissions either by presenting
an impedance mismatch to unwanted frequencies, thereby returning them to
the input, or by absorbing these unwanted frequencies. It is essential that design
engineers pay sufficient attention to electromagnetic energy levels as all devices
must abide by strict EMC standards which are regulated by a number of different
environmental standards agencies across Europe.

The Avnet Abacus range of Electromechanical (Emech) components comprises switching

Avnet Abacus provides a full range of solutions that protect electronic circuits from hazardous events,
such as over-current and over-voltage.
An over-current condition is caused by excessive current passing through a circuit, overriding the
maximum amount of current a product is designed to withstand under normal conditions.
Over-voltage conditions are short duration spikes, or transients in voltage resulting from a sudden
release of previously stored energy. Over-voltage conditions can be caused, e.g. by converting energy
from one voltage to another, lightning, ESD, and motor start-ups.
Protection of components in electronic circuits provides assurances when the condition is cleared; the
application will continue to function.
