I. Assessment
In most counties, regional centers are required to provide assessments for
competency to stand trial. In Los Angeles County, assessment of competency to
stand trial is performed by court appointed psychologists and psychiatrists who
appear on a list entitled “Approved Panel of Psychiatrists & Psychologists,”
which can be found at:

Legal Defense-Public Defenders
California provides defense attorneys through the county Public Defender offices free of
charge for those who cannot afford a private attorney. The appropriate area office may be
contacted to identify a public defender or to request that a public defender be assigned.
When more than one defendant is charged in a crime an Alternate Public Defender may
be assigned and may be contacted through the local public defender’s office.
