1 Overview
This application note introduces the program FreRes. Use this program to
measure the frequency response of a device under test, using a generator
as signal source and a power meter, an emi receiver or a spectrum
analyzer as indicator. Virtually any Rohde & Schwarz signal generator,
spectrum analyzer, or power meter are supported (see below)

FreRes – Frequency Response Measurement
The program runs under Windows NT/95/98.
Download the program as an archive, then install the program.
The program comes complete with a comprehensive help system,
additionally a user manual is included in PDF format as manu04.pdf.
2 Software Features
FreRes provides functions for setting up the following measurement
instruments and measurement parameters:
•
Select the source and set up the GPIB
•
Select the indicator and set up the GPIB
•
Set up sweep parameters
•
Set up graphic panel parameters
•
Normalize the measurement setup
•
Repeat measurements
•
Save results as an ASCII file or a bitmap
•
Print results as a listing or a diagram
•
Load and display a previously saved ASCII file
•
Save the measurement setup from session to session on hard disk, so
that valid setups from previous sessions are immediately available.
3 Hardware and Software Requirements
Hardware Requirements
The program will run on any IBM AT compatible computer with
• CPU:
486, Pentium or better; clock rate >100 MHz
• RAM:
≥ 32 Mbyte (for Windows NT ≥ 48 Mbytes)
• Monitor:
VGA color monitor minimum 800x600 ;
recommended 1024x768
• GPIB:
GPIB (IEEE) - bus interface Rohde & Schwarz:
IEEE 488.2 Bus Interface PS-B4, 1006.6207.04 or
National Instruments AT-GPIB / TNT
Software Requirements
• Windows 95/98 or Windows NT (version 4.0 or later)
• GPIB(IEC) - driver software for Windows from National Instruments
(appropriate to the operating system)

4 Connecting Computer and Instruments
Fig. 4-1
½
Connection of computer and instruments
Connect the source and the indicator via GPIB cables to the PC acting
as controller.
5 Installing Software
FreRes is supplied as a packed file. Download the file, copy it if necessary
to another PC,then install the software.
Downloading
½ Download FreRes32.exe which is packed archive.
½ FreRes 32.exe, which self-excracts
The following files are expanded to the directory you choose on your hard
disk:
FreRes32.001
FreRes32.002
setup.exe

FreRes – Frequency Response Measurement
Installation
½ To install the Frequency Response Program from the hard disk run
setup.exe.
The setup program prompts for the installing directories.
Once the setup program has run the FreRes directory is created, containing
the following files:
last_run.pdt
uninst.exe
uninst.lrm
FreRES32.exe
FreRES32.uir
Manu04.HLP
visa32.dll
Creating Installation Disks
You will need two diskettes: Copy the downloaded files onto diskette, to
transfer FreRes to another PC.
½ Copy setup.exe and FreRes32.001 to Disk 1,
and FreRes32.002 to Disk 2
½ To install FreRes32 on another PC, insert Disk 1 into the PC’s disk drive
and start setup.exe.
6 Starting Software
½ Start the program with:
- Start / Programs / Frequency Response /
double click on
Frequency Response or -
Frequency Response in the installed directory.
The main menu appears, with the configuration last used loaded. The
configuration is saved in the file last_run.pdt.
FreRes is largely self explanatory. For additional information see:
- the online help
- the manual in pdf format (man04.pdf)
