FRONT DESK Letter From Hervé Fages Pelco Customer Satisfaction at a Five-Year High I ’m very pleased — but not surprised — to report that Pelco™ by Schneider Electric™ recently achieved an excellent milestone within our quarterly Customer Net Promoter Score (CNPS). For Quarter One 2014, we reached a five-year high in our CNPS customer satisfaction score with 97% of Pelco customers reporting that they are “Extremely Satisfied” and “Very Satisfied”. Congratulations to all. This is great news! Because of the value we place in employee empowerment and involvement, Pelco has always been able to provide a very unique and personal level of service for our customers, and this is as true now as ever before. Not only do we continue to empower and support employees to do whatever it takes to make the customer happy, we also now have excellent informationsharing systems and many online support tools and services in place to ensure that all our customers receive the highest level of support available — and they have taken notice. Being IP driven and customer focused is a reality reflecting our successful migration from analog to IP, as well as our extreme focus on the customer. Over the past several years, we have made immeasurable advances to our product and services offering, and the rewards of that work are coming to fruition. Understandably, we must continue to prove this through our actions, not our words, but I’m confident that our team will always deliver the cradle-to grave support that Pelco customers (and their customers) expect. As for the product side of our business, I’m equally proud to report that we made a great showing at ISC West earlier this year. Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 3 “I WON THE RACE AGAINST CANCER… BUT I AM STILL RUNNING” A TRUE INSPIRATION COMPLETING A MARATHON OR MAJOR RACE BRINGS UP A RANGE OF EMOTIONS FOR ALL RUNNERS. BUT FOR SAMUEL CHETTIAR, JUST BEING ABLE TO STAND ON THE STARTING LINE OF THE SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC PARIS MARATHON WAS AN ACCOMPLISHMENT IN ITSELF. MWIA-9HXGV3 In 2008, Chettiar was diagnosed with a stage-4 cancer called Hodgkin's Lymphoma, originating from a dysfunction of the white blood cells. Facing this very serious illness, near unbearable pain, and the huge shock, Chettiar decided to fight and began his 12 chemotherapy sessions. After a six-month battle, the disease went into remission. 4 | The India Product Manager for Pelco™ by Schneider Electric™ said that he then went back to normal life, but did gain a lot of weight. “After what I had been through, I decided I just wanted to enjoy the time with my family and relatives,” he said, “and I progressively moved to a sedentary life, eating what I wanted, when I wanted and without exercising.” Chettiar hit a breaking point when one day he realized he could not bend to tie his shoelaces. “I understood I could not continue this way, that I did Pelco Press Summer 2014 not fight a serious illness to deteriorate my health like that afterwards,” he said. In February 2013, Chettiar was introduced to road running by one of his colleagues who he saw running every morning on his way to work. “The first runs were very difficult; I could not run more than two kilometers,” he said. “But I held on it.” A few weeks later, Chettiar ran his first 10k, and in May 2013, he was one of the few stage-4 cancer survivors in India to run a half marathon. With the goal of running a marathon on each continent, Chettiar was on the starting line of the 2014 Schneider Electric Paris Marathon in early April. But crossing the finishing line in Paris is not his only goal. “I hope my story will give hope and encourage all runners and all people within Schneider Electric to go beyond their own limits,” he said, “I am existing proof that if you are dreaming of something, you can reach it if you put passion and strength in it. People often believe that after a battle against cancer, your body is too weak to bear activities such as a marathon — but this is not true, and if I can do it, everybody can do it.” He also wants to use this opportunity to raise awareness of Hodgkin's Lymphoma and funds for non-governmental organizations that are working to improve people’s lives: “I ran the Schneider Electric Paris Marathon for the 'LOVE, JOY and HOPE' foundation, dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities to help them reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.” CONTENT Evolution 360 Total Situational Awareness MWIA-9HSH95 35 8 Summer 2014 26 Cover Story Your Support Team: 150+ Strong Your call is our mission.. CASE STUDY: SARIX THERMAL Thermal Imaging Technology for Unprecedented Port Security MWIA-9HXGSL Millions of tons of cargo. Billions of dollars in goods. The activity of a small city with miles of perimeter fencing, uneven infrastructure, blind spots, and ever-changing weather conditions. Port security is no small task, yet increasingly, security operators are asked to assume more responsibilities with static, if not shrinking, budgets. As drivers of a global economy, the demands placed on port security continue to grow and with them, the challenges and complexity increase exponentially. 8 | Pelco Press Summer 2014 “ It’s exciting to bring technology that was once limited to high-end military applications to mainstream video security. “ Leveraging Existing Infrastructure The Thermal Advantage Unlike traditional retail, commercial, and many industrial applications, ports present unique security issues that must be anticipated and addressed. Typically, high-security installations rely on a variety of solutions, including video security and surveillance. The combination of legacy analog and more modern IP-based video cameras, recording and video management systems, PSIM, analytics, and more provide a digital extension of security personnel. Once restricted to the military due to prohibitive cost, thermal imaging is an increasingly relied upon technology for an evergrowing array of security — as well as process and operations management — applications. As price points have dropped, integration of thermal technology into today’s video security and surveillance camera systems has become more prevalent, providing a wealth of information and functionality previously unavailable. Port security, however, is anything but typical. From miles of unguarded, unlit perimeters to ever-changing lighting and weather conditions, traditional video security has a difficult time providing the comprehensive intelligence demanded by such a high-security facility. As David Dorn, applied technology engineer manager at Pelco™ by Schneider Electric™ said, “Due to significant improvements in fabrication technologies, we are seeing dramatic price reductions in those thermal imaging core components [image sensors and lenses] necessary to build thermal cameras. In the last 18 months, for example, we have seen a 2x cost factor reduction in the image sensors themselves. This means that thermal technology is no longer confined to high-end military and government applications.” Because many applications that rely on video security are challenged by a number of external, uncontrollable factors, including ambient light and weather, thermal imaging has cemented its position as a must-have technology to detect and observe the persons and vehicles on and near a facility — information necessary to make immediate, informed decisions. Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 9 CASE STUDY: SARIX THERMAL How it Works Whereas a visible-light camera uses light reflected off objects to build an image, thermal imaging cameras capture an object’s emitted heat to provide a high-contrast image — eliminating the need for any light source. Using special materials like Germanium that transmit thermal energy, lenses focus a thermal image onto a thermal image sensor. Microbolometers, the sensors used to create a thermal image, feature either Vanadium Oxide or Amorphous Silicon coatings on a silicon wafer. “Similar to CCD or CMOS imagers in visible-light cameras, the microbolometer has an array of pixels with each pixel receiving heat energy proportional to the heat energy present in the scene at that point,” Dorn said. “Because today's advanced thermal cameras can detect even minute differences in temperature, visual information that was never before available is now at a security operator's fingertips.” The thermal contrast among objects in low-light and no-light conditions provides the information necessary to quickly make informed decisions — information that standard visible light cameras cannot deliver. And thanks to this technology, thermal imaging is also a powerful tool for applications beyond security — providing the capabilities to spot leaks, ruptures, or hot spots across bridges, dams, refineries, and power plants. For many security applications, the ability to detect if a person or vehicle has entered the scene is critical. Thermal excels in this regard since the temperature of a person or vehicle is typically quite different than the background temperature of the scene. This makes people and vehicles easy to detect in thermal images, even from very long ranges. The ability to accurately and reliably detect people and vehicles is also very useful for video analytics. 10 | Pelco Press Summer 2014 Even in complete darkness or in areas obscured by fog, foliage, or other obscurants, thermal cameras alert security personnel to potential threats that may not be captured by a standard visible light camera. And this is nowhere more important than port applications, where security personnel are faced with a variety of challenges, from distant, poorly lit perimeters to unguarded waterfront access. Thermal imaging is quickly becoming a common, tried, and trusted technology, independent of or complementary to visible light cameras, to ensure 24-hour protection. Lower Installation and Operating Costs Interestingly, although thermal cameras still typically cost more per unit than a traditional visible camera, deployment of a thermal imaging solution in a port environment can be much more cost effective than traditional video. For one, thermal cameras have longer detection ranges, necessitating the use of fewer units, overall. Additionally, because thermal cameras do not need lighting, their use can eliminate the need for installation of light poles and their associated infrastructure. Finally, with operating costs continually under pressure, thermal cameras are attractive because they can eliminate the ongoing electrical costs of powering lights for security every night of the year. Video Analytics A major advantage of thermal imaging is in its ability to deliver high-contrast images in the most challenging lighting conditions. Since thermal imaging uses heat from objects to form its image, no illumination source is needed. This means that thermal imaging works equally well in all lighting conditions — day or night under normal light, low light, or even no light conditions. Importantly, thermal cameras provide an optimal platform for the use of video analytics. Since visible-light cameras are dependent upon reflected light, image quality and accuracy can degrade throughout a 24-hour period due to shadows, inconsistent lighting, glare, and other lighting effects over which neither security operators nor technology have control. But since thermal cameras Sarix TI: The Premier Thermal Imaging Camera System Sarix™ TI is the first thermal camera specifically designed to be an integrated part of any end-to-end video security solution. Completely operable with both Pelco and third-party video management and recording systems, Sarix TI is quite simply, the evolution of thermal imaging. Available in both IP, analog, fixed, and pan/tilt models, Sarix TI is as easy to install and use as any traditional dome camera. Bringing an all-digital design with advanced thermal imaging capabilities to mainstream video security applications, the result is an affordable camera system that delivers high-quality video, as well as the power and flexibility that only comes with thermal imaging technology. > Non-military thermal camera > Sun-safe amorphous silicon sensor > Plug and play with the industry’s most common recording and video management systems > Fully integrated sensor, camera, enclosure, and pan/tilt system > Fixed and pan/tilt models integration into any IP or analog system > Embedded analytics > Full and reduced frame rate options > Multiple resolution options, up to 640x480 > Three-year warranty capture an object’s thermal emission, it ignores common light conditions (whether too little or too much), which challenge traditional video analytics. The high-contrast image enables the predictable use of analytics with extremely low false-alarm rates at all hours of the day. Thermal cameras, especially those with built-in, integrated analytics, enhance the flexibility and performance of any security system. The ability of thermal imaging to immediately detect threats — typically before even the human observer — coupled with the automatic notification of suspicious activity, makes you more prepared than ever to keep their property secure. A popular example of such a deployment is virtual fencing and automated perimeter security, taking advantage of “trip wire” and other behavioral analytics. A thermal camera looking down a fence line with a virtual trip wire, people-detection analytic employed, will give a very accurate alarm if someone crosses the fence line over a long distance, day or night, under any lighting conditions. This “thermal fence” solution is much more accurate and cost effective than existing visible camera solutions, traditional deployments of microwave detectors, and even existing motion/perimeter proximity sensors. “The ability to deploy thermal with analytics in such a cost-effective fashion opens up many new applications for this technology,” Dorn said. “It’s exciting to bring technology that was once limited to high-end military applications to mainstream video security.” PP Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 11 Flagship Charity Pelco by Schneider Electric Selects MWIA-9HXH33 Mission 500 as Flagship Charity 12 | Pelco Press Summer 2014 The security industry in general, and Pelco™ by Schneider Electric™ in particular, has a long history of protecting and saving lives, as well as a list of heroic achievements for the communities in which we live. For us, community partnership and civic engagement have always been a driving force of our culture. From our September 11 Memorial and annual observance to Toys for Tots, Special Education Kids Day, scholarship programs and more, Pelco is committed to using our global footprint to help the lives of others. And now, we are proud to announce that Mission 500, a nonprofit organization in partnership with World Vision, is our new flagship charity. Dedicated to helping children and communities in crisis, in just the last six years alone, the security industry has donated more than $1 million in cash and in-kind contributions to meet the vital needs of some of the most disadvantaged children in the world. And recently, the organization reached its namesake goal through the sponsorship of 500 children. Experience: Kisongo Trek — a multimedia journey into the heart of an African village. The 1,000-square-foot interactive exhibit recreates the experience of a donor or child sponsor who heads to Africa to see how their contribution is creating real and lasting change for children and families in need. During the visit, Pelco employees and visitors worked together to build over 1,000 refill kits, which included much-needed school supplies for local-area children. Mission 500 continues to strengthen its position in the security industry as the “charity of choice,” while significantly increasing the number of sponsored children. As part of this plan, Mission 500 created advisory and executive boards composed of strong teams of security industry leaders. They include two representatives from Pelco: Herve Fages, senior vice president, Video Line of Business, serves on the Advisory Board, and Jenna Wardle, director, Regional Marketing, North America Sales, serves on the Executive Board Marketing Committee. “We are honored to work with an organization like World Vision and support Mission 500 in hosting the Kisongo Experience, which gives our employees and community the opportunity to see how organizations like this are helping families in need,” Fages said. “Throughout the year, Pelco looks for opportunities to incorporate Mission 500 into both internal and external events to raise awareness and funds for this important charity,” said Wardle. “We have brought the Kisongo Trek experience to our headquarters and have participated in a number of activities so that our employees, customers, and the industry in general understand the great work that World Vision and Mission 500 do day in, day out.” Here are Some of the Ways Pelco Works With Mission 500 Kisongo Trek Last fall, Pelco hosted the “Kisongo Experience” at our Clovis, Calif. campus. The World Vision Kisongo Experience is housed inside a high-tech expandable semi-truck, which virtually “transports” visitors to Tanzania. More than 30,000 visitors have already been through the free, family-friendly, new World Vision World-Wide Sales Meeting Support for Mission 500 has also become integrated into Pelco events. In January, during our annual World Wide Sales Meeting, teams from around the globe kicked off the year by building 500 backpacks full of supplies for Mission 500 sponsor children. ISC West Mission 500 had a large footprint at ISC West. In the Pelco booth itself, through a simple spin of the wheel, customers were able to win a donation of food, money, and farm animals to impoverished villages. Be A Part of Mission 500 By supporting Mission 500, you can join the legions of security professionals who are donating their time and resources to help improve the lives of children around the world. Just $35 a month provides food, education, and healthcare services to a child in need. A small investment in our collective future. Together with Mission 500 we can make a difference. Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 13 PRODUCT OVERVIEW: MULTISIGHT MultiSight Video Service MWIA-9HSJ3G Now You Can Be Everywhere at Once 14 | Pelco Press Summer 2014 Without efficient tools for answering such questions, many must go unanswered. Until now. Introducing MultiSight™ Video Service MultiSight is a game-changing video service designed specifically for multi-site retailers, convenience stores, and restaurants. “We began development with months of customer research, and found that many retailers were attempting to use their security systems to perform ‘operational’ functions within their businesses,” says Greg Millar, chief technology officer and senior vice president of Schneider Electric’s Video Line of Business. “We decided to include those functions in MultiSight from the beginning, building a video service tailored to the unmet needs of retailers.” You’re running a retail business, with multiple stores spread across hundreds of miles and a number of states. You have a security system with cameras, and alarms, and motion sensors. But what about the actual operation of your business? In a company with hundreds or even thousands of locations, how do you monitor customer service and employee performance day-in and day-out? Even with a well-executed store auditing program, you and your managers simply cannot be everywhere, all the time. And, as a result, things may be happening that shouldn’t be: • Did all of your stores open on time? Did any close early? • Are your employees preparing food correctly and safely, greeting customers promptly, and keeping the store clean and organized? • Is marketing material displayed correctly, or not at all? • Which locations are extra busy? And which ones aren’t busy, and why? • Are managers following proper cash-handling procedures? • What was the source of the inventory shortage in this location? Operational questions like these are almost impossible to answer using the tools currently available to multi-site managers. Other questions can be answered, but only by investing significant time, effort, and maybe even a trip to the store to locate and retrieve the video. MultiSight is a complete solution — the high-definition cameras, gateway, apps, and cloud-based services are designed to work together and are all included in the price of the service. And the service is completely optimized for mobile viewing. Imagine being able to see directly into any store, any time, from anywhere — your office, at an airport, or stopping to get your morning coffee. Imagine having instant access to what’s going on right now, and what went on last night during a busy shift, just with the swipe of a finger. This is the vision of MultiSight. MultiSight Video Service: Everything’s Included, No Upfront Costs Up to 12 HD (720p), ultra-low power PoE cameras. Discreet design allows for a variety of installation options. • Sealed, fanless and wall-mountable Gateway featuring continuous recording for 15 days, extended recording up to 30 days, and one year of cloud storage. • Installation, configuration, and maintenance • Mobile App for any iOS Device • System health monitoring Installation and Services Software and Updates Equipment Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 15 PRODUCT OVERVIEW: MULTISIGHT Designed with the Business in Mind Be Everywhere at Once MultiSight addresses the particular requirements of retail and restaurant environments and end users: MultiSight’s cloud-based architecture offers features you won’t see anywhere else: All inclusive – Everything is included: from highdefinition cameras to mobile apps (see sidebar). Use the mobile app to quickly mark a clip, then send an email with a link to the video. All shared video is retained in the cloud for a year. IT-friendly – MultiSight requires no special network configuration. And the video is designed to stream without slowing down or disrupting network traffic — crucial for keeping business-critical transactions flowing. No worries about downtime – MultiSight’s support team monitors your system’s health, as part of your monthly service. When an incident occurs you can rest easy knowing that the video will be available. Low-energy – In retail, every penny counts. THE BUZZ Customer Letters Hands-Down Best Training I want to take this opportunity and thank you all for a magnificent training at Pelco. Now I understand why Pelco is the TOP and BEST camera manufacturer in the world. I appreciate the time you all spent training and showing us the hard work and process it takes to make a great quality product. I could honestly say this was hands-down the best training and understanding I have ever received from a manufacturer. I’m going to invest all my resources and power to make sure all my customers understand the great products Pelco offers. I am very proud to say I sell Pelco products after this visit. Total Product Support MWIA-9HRK7G Thank you very much for sending Garth Hubbard to us! He checked many things that no one else had previously checked, and he figured out the issues. I’m extremely grateful for your assistance. Replacing those competitor boxes with actual Pelco equipment will go a long way to making the customer happy. I am very glad that we have you, Andrew Strong and Garth, now to contact should we have questions in the future. I would also like to get my guys into a more advanced training class if you have something available for contractors. I don’t like to install equipment that we cannot fully support or where we have to “wing it” every time there is an issue. Let me know. Again, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for your help!! Problems Solved I would like to express my appreciation for the hard work and diligence shown by members of your staff, especially Jose Perez. In the beginning of April we purchased 10 of Pelco’s new IMP cameras; after installation we began having issues. Opening a service request and receiving immediate technical support from your staff really helped avoid having to remove those cameras until a solution could be found. Not satisfied with a simple software patch, Jose and two other members of Pelco ventured to the great Northwest to verify the problem was corrected. During their visit they witnessed first-hand other problems we were encountering. Satisfied they understood our issues, Jose and team returned to Clovis with data necessary to correct the new issues. Their relentlessness to resolve these issues has renewed my faith in Pelco customer service. Please extend my appreciation to Jose and all your product support staff. Continued on page 51 Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 17 PRODUCT OVERVIEW: ETHERNET OVER COAX Connect With Powerful Ethernet Over Coax Solution The Pelco™ by Schneider Electric EthernetConnect™ Ethernet over coax (EoC) solution allows customers to use existing coax or UTP/Cat5 infrastructure for IP data runs of up to 5,000 feet — with PoE+ power injection or pass-through PoE over both medias. Having the ability to connect directly to a PoE+ source power, these devices can also effectively become PoE midspans, saving critical space in racks and other mountings, which can be critical for video installations. Leveraging Existing Infrastructure The EthernetConnect system has two primary uses. First is to be able to leverage existing infrastructure for a retrofit. This is important when an installer can’t remove an existing system and can’t install new cabling. EthernetConnectvc makes it easy to place media converters on either end and utilize the existing coaxial analog system for IP video. Extending Your Total Reach The second primary use has to do with extending the IP signal past the Cat5, 100-meter limitation, and still be able to provide power up to the media. The EthernetConnect system allows all of this to happen in a cost-effective manner. And because fiber cannot pass power, many installers are replacing fiber with Cat5 extension in new installations. Guaranteed Video Security Performance MWIA-9HRKA7 By providing an entire mix of transmission solutions, we can test, certify, and guarantee compatibility across all platforms, and we can make sure the systems are robust enough for 24/7 video use. Beyond that, since we control the technologies within our transmission strategy, we can integrate these technologies closer and closer to the camera system. And in some cases, include it in the camera — once again adding to the confidence level that our systems are tested and guaranteed to interoperate. 18 | Pelco Press Summer 2014 The EthernetConnect Series supports up to 16 channels of 10/100 Mbps Ethernet with PoE+ power injection or pass through PoE over coax or twisted pair cable (Cat5 or above). Having the ability to connect directly to a PoE+ source (midspan or switch) and to generate PoE+ power with a 48-volt input at either the master or remote end, the EthernetConnect Series provides ultimate flexibility for extending powered or nonpowered IP cameras over long-distance copper wire types. Pelco transmission systems are engineered and tested to support all of the necessary media protocols for video security transmission compatibility and operation, and the technologies are applied with compatibility in mind. Its position on the Atlantic coast made it the ideal location for Brazil’s first Export Processing Zone, which opened in 2012 and is now protected by a comprehensive security solution that includes hundreds of Sarix™ IX Series and Spectra™ IV IP cameras from Pelco™ by Schneider Electric™. The Export Processing Zone of Pecém (ZPE Pecém) is a free-trade area where companies focused on the production of goods to be exported can benefit from government incentives. The area sees a tremendous amount of vehicle and cargo traffic, which must be inspected at the customs clearance area before it is allowed entry. With so much cargo coming in and out, there were both processing and security challenges. Additionally, theft had become a major concern, since no comprehensive security system was in place. The Solution The Results The management division of the Export Processing Zone of Pecém SA (ZPE Ceará) sought a solution that would reduce processing times and make it easy to track trucks in and out of checkpoints, as well as provide a bird’s eye view of all secure areas. ZPE Ceará realized improved efficiency and reduced processing times with its comprehensive video surveillance solution. Video analytics and weight scale integration have helped reduce the time it takes for a truck to pass through a checkpoint from 7.4 minutes to three minutes. ZPE Ceará worked with Intelligent Security Systems (ISS), a leading video management and video-analytic software company with a history of success with seaports and customs operations. ISS provided ZPE Ceará with a comprehensive videomanagement and video-analytic system that meets the security requirements of the Brazilian government. “We are already seeing a seismic improvement in both processing times and overall security,” said Marcelo Costa Caldas, technical director of ZPE Ceará. “We have license plate and container recognition on every gate. This allows us to reduce the staff needed at the gates, minimize mistakes, and increase the throughput of our operations.” “THE PELCO CAMERAS, TRUE TO THEIR REPUTATION, ARE PROVING TO BE QUITE RESISTANT TO THE SALT AIR OF THE PORT. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT IN AN ENVIRONMENT LIKE OURS — CLOSE TO THE OCEAN WITH VERY HIGH CORROSION.” LPR and container-recognition analytics allow Caldas and his team to know what trucks are coming in and when, all the identifying information about their cargo, who the driver is, and how long it takes them to get to their destination. – Marcelo Costa Caldas, technical director of ZPE Ceará Speed Sistemas of Brazil handled the integration of the videomanagement solution and Pelco cameras with several third-party systems, including Brazil Customs management system, access control, Southwest Microwave perimeter control, fire, audio, the Public Safety Department system, and I/O Advantech. The deployment involved six servers (fully redundant and virtualized), 200 Pelco IP cameras, 264 third-party cameras, Web access, 34 channels of license plate recognition (LPR), 36 channels of container recognition (18 side/18 top), and LPR and container cameras with infrared illuminators. All information is sent to the Port Authority management system and is readily available to Brazilian Customs authorities. Caldas said they can now monitor the entire perimeter from their control room and act instantly if a threat is detected. Additionally, they now have high-quality video evidence for all cases that is easy to export and send to long-term archives. “Both employees and outsiders are now aware of the system we have in place, which is already having a deterrent effect in relation to theft,” Caldas said. Pelco Sarix and Spectra cameras were selected based on their reliability, image quality, and ability to withstand the corrosive elements of salt air. “The Pelco cameras, true to their reputation, are proving to be quite resistant to the salt air of the port,” Caldas said. “This is extremely important in an environment like ours — close to the ocean with very high corrosion.” ZPE Ceará already plans to expand its system throughout 2014 to accommodate two new gates, and it’s preparing for 450% growth in the next five years. Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 31 Q&A: NEXT GENERATION OF SARIX CAMERAS Ask the Expert The Next Generation of Sarix Cameras In 2013, Pelco revamped our entire fixed IP camera offering. After the next generation of Sarix™ cameras were released, Pelco Press sat down with Senior Product Manager Kevin Saldanha to learn more about this exciting offer. As the product manager for these cameras, Saldanha explains how the new Sarix cameras differ from the competition and what they mean for the video security industry. Q: TELL US ABOUT THE SARIX PRODUCT LAUNCHES AND AVAILABILITY. A: The Sarix product launches that we did in 2013 and early 2014 were among the most ambitious product launches in Pelco’s history, considering that we updated the entire fixed IP camera product line in about one year. Looking at just the Sarix Enhanced Range and Sarix Professional Range, we launched 114 different camera models over six months. The last camera to be launched was the Sarix Enhanced Range box camera, which was released in April 2014. All of the new Sarix cameras are now released and fully available. Q: WHAT CAMERAS ARE INCLUDED IN THE NEW SARIX PRODUCT OFFERING? A: The Sarix Value Range, our entry-level mini box and micro dome IP network cameras, offers a costeffective solution for video security needs in small- to medium-sized businesses. Known for their unique award-winning design, the box cameras offer unique mounting flexibility, while the micro domes ship with quick-snap in-ceiling mounts. The Sarix Professional Cameras, our mid-range cameras, are highly versatile and available in choice of many bullet, box, and dome camera models. These cameras have excellent image quality, particularly when zooming in to fine details, especially in the 5 Mpx cameras. The adaptive IR, available in bullet and some outdoor dome models, provides impressive detail in low-light situations. BHEN-9HEP5C At the high end, we have the Sarix Enhanced Range with SureVision™ 2.0. These cameras are designed for the most difficult lighting conditions and they are available in a wide range of indoor, environmental, and vandal dome options, as well as box cameras. These impressive cameras offer WDR and low light at the same time, all the time; up to two simultaneous 1080p streams at 30fps, while multi-tasking; and superior reliability to overcome network glitches. They also include a full suite of video analytics behaviors. 32 | Pelco Press Summer 2014 “ We are adding the full suite of Pelco Analytics to Sarix Enhanced cameras bringing the full capabilities of intelligent video to this range of products. ” Image Clarity The Sarix Professional Range cameras provide superb detail, even as objects approach the camera — not like competing cameras that allow objects to become oversaturated and evidentiary detail to be lost. Q: WHAT IS NEW IN SUREVISION 2.0 COMPARED TO PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF SUREVISION? A: New SureVision 2.0 technology not Q: WHAT PRODUCT ENHANCEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE SINCE THE ORIGINAL RELEASE? A: The Sarix Enhanced Range will be Q: WHAT ARE PEOPLE OUTSIDE OF PELCO SAYING ABOUT THE SARIX ENHANCED RANGE? A: The Sarix Enhanced Range with only combines wide dynamic range (WDR), low-light, and anti-bloom capabilities but now also has 3D noise filtering, smooth response to illumination changes, and improved tone mapping to retain color accuracy and overall image contrast. This allows Sarix to automatically deliver the best possible image in the most complex and changing lighting conditions — bright areas, shaded areas, and intense light. ONVIF Profile G compliant this summer and the Sarix Professional Range will be ONVIF Profile G compliant this fall. The ONVIF Profile G specification sets a standard for storing, searching, retrieving, and playback of on-board storage in IP cameras. Also this summer, we are adding the full suite of Pelco Analytics to Sarix Enhanced cameras, bringing the full capabilities of intelligent video to this range of products. SureVision 2.0 has gotten very positive reviews from industry experts. When comparing Sarix Enhanced Range with SureVision 2.0 against previous versions of SureVision and against competitors, SureVision 2.0 excels at WDR performance and 3 Mpx/1080p low-light performance. SS&I commended the Sarix Enhanced Dome on its “excellent video quality” and its ability to “easily switch from color to black and white, providing a very good image in low-light conditions.” When set to use CVBR, Sarix Enhanced had some of the lowest bandwidth consumption at all light levels, and in some cases it beat out previous leading competitors, according to IPVM. Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 33 Q&A: Next Generation of Sarix Cameras Q: WHAT IS CVBR? IS IT AVAILABLE IN BOTH SARIX ENHANCED AND SARIX PROFESSIONAL RANGES? A: Yes, Constrained Variable Bit Rate (CVBR) is available in both Sarix Enhanced and Sarix Professional Ranges. CVBR can be thought of as Variable Bit Recording (VBR) with a cap. CVBR makes accurately calculating and managing bandwidth usage and storage requirements more predictable, while also ensuring lower bit rates for less complex scenes. Sarix Enhanced and Professional Range models default to CVBR to optimize bandwidth utilization and storage efficiency. Our current implementation of CVBR in Sarix Pro and Enhanced, offers much greater variability in adjusting bandwidth as a function of scene complexity, compared to CVBR in the previous generation of Sarix cameras. Now, when scene complexity is lower, bit rates are much lower – using less bandwidth and less storage. Sarix Enhanced also supports VBR, and users can select this if they desire. Q: HAVE YOU HAD ANY INDUSTRY FEEDBACK ON THE SARIX PROFESSIONAL RANGE YET? A: The Sarix Professional Range cameras are currently being reviewed by industry experts. We have not gotten their feedback yet. However, there are a couple of areas where we know that these cameras differentiate themselves. First, the Sarix Professional Range cameras have exceptional image clarity when you zoom in, especially in the 5 Mpx cameras. These fine details provide better information for making decisions in security situations. Secondly, the adaptive IR feature in the Sarix Professional Range cameras provides superb detail, even as objects approach the camera. Many competing cameras struggle with using IR as a source of illumination since it is easy for objects to become oversaturated and evidentiary detail to be lost as objects come closer to the camera. The wide range of Sarix Professional products at very competitive price points is rapidly gaining market attention and traction. Learn more! Visit pelco.com to learn more about Sarix cameras. 34 | Pelco Press Summer 2014 Q: WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE OLDER SARIX CAMERA MODELS? A: All Sarix IX, ID, IE, IM Series cameras will stop shipping as of this summer. This includes all product options, Extended Platform versions and Image-Pak products based on these legacy Sarix models. There are a few exceptions; the IXE20DN, IDE20DN, IEE20DN and IXE10LW will continue to be available until Dec. 31, 2014. All of these cameras will be supported through the full length of their warranty. Talk to your local sales representative for details. Q: IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT OUR READERS TO KNOW ABOUT THE SARIX CAMERAS? A: The differentiation we offer extends beyond the depth and breadth of our compelling IP camera offerings. When you choose Pelco, you enjoy our unparalleled commitment to customer support. As the hands-down leader in innovative customer service, Pelco continues to deliver an expanding array of accessories, services, tools, and programs — all designed to help you manage your business more effectively. Evolution 360 MWIA-9HSH95 Total Situational Awareness Technology that captures a 360-degree image is unique. Technology that enables a user to retrospectively track an incident back in time is even more unique. This combination provides customers with total situational awareness. Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 35 PRODUCT OVERVIEW: 360º CAMERA In applications that only have traditional cameras, several narrow field of view (NFOV) cameras and pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras need to be sprinkled throughout the scene, which requires much higher infrastructure and installation costs because of the number of cameras required. Furthermore, standard PTZ cameras are positioned only to cover key areas (such as doors, passages, sitting areas, counters, etc.) and will only record where the PTZ is pointing — always leaving a number of blind spots and an inconclusive evidence trial. Even though a PTZ can be programmed to respond to an event trigger, it will arrive at and show video after the event has taken place. Wouldn’t it be nice to see what happened before the alarm? One solution is to combine the Evolution™ 360-degree camera with your NFOV camera and PTZ cameras. When the Evolution 360-degree camera is mounted onto walls it creates a floor-to ceiling bubble effect around the area of interest. Any event or activity, taking place within this bubble, is visible to the camera, which provides total situational awareness. This “blanket of eyes” may be replicated by using a number of NFOV cameras and stitching the video together, but the use of multiple cameras adds both cost and complexity that a single multi-megapixel 360-degree camera solves. clarity, much like a virtual PTZ experience. Contrast this with a NFOV camera or with a motorized PTZ that only records the spot where the camera is pointing. Limitless Possibilities There really are no limits on how the Evolution 360, coupled with the best dewarping technology and integrated into the VMS, can add value. With retrospective dewarping and analysis, customers have the best forensic tool available on the market today. That being said, the following customer examples illustrate where customers are installing 360-degree technology to provide added value to their business or operation. Retail This first example demonstrates where a retail group, with more than 10,000 retail franchises, is successfully utilizing Evolution 360-degree cameras to provide additional marketing and business intelligence. Customers are using the technology for two main reasons: First, for situational awareness because 360-degree technology provides the end user with coverage that has no blind spots and retrospectively analyzes a scene with speed and accuracy that no number of traditional cameras could accomplish. Retrospective Immersive Experience and Client Side Dewarping The most efficacious benefit from a fisheye camera comes when the end user sees a dewarped client viewer that creates a flat, two-dimensional image, or images, from the original fisheye. If this is done on the network video recorder (NVR), it provides an immersive experience similar to a digital or ‘virtual’ PTZ with one very important exception — users are able to go back in time and retrospectively review a scene after an event has happened. This immersive ability gives users a forensic tool to look for evidence because the fisheye view is recording the entire scene constantly, and it can be played back thanks to dewarping software, with 36 | Pelco Press Summer 2014 Secondly, Evolution 360 cameras provide customers with marketing intelligence. They are no longer limited to counting people as they come through the front door. Instead, with a broader 360-degree view, they can analyze pathways, count people standing in line, and calculate shopping time. This is all valuable data to anyone efficiently running a business and trying to maximize ROI. The ability to put this intelligence into a report that makes sense and is easy to work with is a major advantage of analytics, and the ability to place “eyes” over an entire store has led global interest to grow exponentially over the last 12 months. Imagine a store owner or manager sitting at home with his tablet PC in the evening and being able to access not only the live images from the store, but view any part of the store at any time in the day by having access to 360-degree images that he can see as though he was there. It is tomorrow’s technology today. Gaming There are many national and state regulations in the gaming industry, and to become a critical part of the security solution in a casino requires a thorough understanding of these laws. The Evolution 360 can be installed across the gaming floor, integrated right into the video management system (VMS) and can be used for forensic purposes. It is, as Ted Whiting, surveillance director at MGM Resorts International, said, “the best forensic tool ever,” and has become an integral part of the MGM Aria’s surveillance operations. As Whiting explains, the cameras replace traditional surveillance methods used by some casinos, in which hundreds of pan/tilt/ zoom (PTZ) cameras are deployed, all recording to 16-channel multiplexers in an attempt to maximize coverage of the casino floor. The 360-degree cameras record at four frames per second. “That actually works out well. We couple this technology with what I call choke-point cameras [for entrances, exits, and other areas],” Whiting said. “For us, 360-degree cameras exist for one reason — it’s a chase camera — but chasing someone in the past. The PTZ is a live chase camera. Someone is walking through the casino; you follow them with the PTZ,” he said. “But let’s say they stole somebody’s iPad yesterday. The 360-degree camera allows me to chase them through the casino back in time. At some point when we’re chasing them, they walk through a choke-point camera, and then we get a perfect ID shot of them.” Not only that, the recorded video from the 360-degree camera allows Whiting and his team to track a criminal back in time, enabling identification. The two cameras work in tandem to achieve the common goal — identification. Whiting said that he believes there are many security professionals who expected that 360-degree cameras would supplant PTZs. But that’s not how he sees it evolving. “I would never use a 360-degree camera for live view,” he said. “It’s a forensic, investigative tool. And that’s the hardest thing for people to understand.” City Centers Ever wonder why some intersections have four, six, or even eight cameras? It’s because traditionally they’ve needed them to see every angle or perspective. But 360-degree technology can revolutionize the way cityscapes are surveyed by providing situational awareness like never before. With dewarping software integrated into the VMS, users can create as many views, and have as many controllers— live or retrospective — as they need. In other words, they are not limited to the four, six, or eight traditional cameras, or to the four virtual cameras you get from on-board dewarping. Ideal Camera Placement To get the best possible situational awareness, mount the Evolution 360 in an area that is open and away from obstructions. Outdoors, 360-degree cameras work well when mounted on the corners of buildings using a parapet mount. When placed on an external corner of a building, the camera can see around corners. When mounted on a light post in a parking lot, the field of view could be upwards of 300 feet in any direction. When mounted indoors, the ability for a 360-degree camera to show all four directions of a cross hallway, or three directions of a “T” hallway, are superb applications. One alternative purpose for a 360-degree camera is the ability to provide a panoramic view in a wall-mounted orientation. With a panoramic view, two 180-degree views are displayed side by side to show both directions of a street or hallway with just one camera. Ceiling-mounted fisheye cameras are strategically positioned in the center of a scene to maximize the video coverage of large areas. Since the camera sees a complete 360-degree picture, 100 percent visual coverage with no blind spots is obtained and can provide a conclusive evidence trail. Pelco™ by Schneider Electric™ is proud to partner with Oncam Grandeye, one of the pioneers in 360-degree technologies, and they continue to be the leader in 360-degree dewarping technology. From regional hubs in the United Kingdom, United States, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates, Oncam provides security and technology solutions to customers in many countries around the world and is recognized as the global industry leader in total situational awareness. Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 37 SPECIAL MODIFICATION REQUESTS (SMR) More Choices for Customization Via Special Modification Requests For years, Pelco™ by Schneider Electric™ has worked tirelessly to meet the needs of customers, and that includes customers with unique requirements that demand customized solutions. The Pelco Special Modification Request (SMR) program is designed to meet such needs, by adapting our industry-leading products to fit unique applications. In turn, the SMR program allows Pelco dealers and integrators to deliver powerful differentiated solutions to customers. “ Users can browse through our most popular SMRs and get ideas for how an SMR could meet their specific application challenge. Explore SMRs Online ” Increasingly, as customers are pushing IP video into new applications, the need for the kind of customization available through the Pelco SMR program is greater than ever. To make it even easier for customers to explore and utilize SMRs in their projects, we have recently launched an online SMR Catalog. MWIA-9HXGW7 “The online catalog gives customers a first-hand look at the kinds of things we can do through the SMR program,” said George Blackwell, director of Board of Change and SMR for Pelco. "Users can browse through our most popular SMRs and get ideas for how an SMR could meet their specific application challenge. They can filter by different criteria – by type of mount, type of enclosure, camera model, or name." Users can also enter a search term, for example “marine,” and see a list of SMRs suited for a particular application or environment. 38 | Pelco Press Summer 2014 While a lot of the interest in SMRs pertains to mounting and related hardware, of equal interest is the opportunity to paint Pelco products in a certain color, to match aesthetic requirement. By clicking on the Custom Colors tab of the online catalog, users can view the list of Pelco products that can be finished in a custom color, and then pick from any of nearly 200 RAL colors or from four Pelco colors. “An advantage of doing color match with Pelco is that we have our own paint booth, so if a customer calls for it we can finish an SMR in multiple colors," Blackwell said. Whether picking a physical SMR or a color-match option, users can then generate a detailed PDF, including a description of the SMR, suggested applications, warranty information, the SMR number, and technical and application notes. They can share the PDF with their customers, include it in bids, and also send to their Pelco representative to initiate an order. “All SMRs start with a request,” Blackwell said, “and customers initiate that request with their Pelco representative. Even if customers don’t see exactly what they are looking for when they browse the catalog, we encourage them to contact their representative. We will work with the reps to identify the best way to accommodate a customer’s specific need.” PP What’s New in SMRs “At recent trade shows, customers have shown great interest in new and customized mounts,” Blackwell said. “Some have expressed a need to mount multiple fixed cameras on an existing mount, where previously there was a single PTZ. Many others are looking for ways to mount multiple PTZs and/or fixed cameras on a single arm or pole. We welcome these kinds of challenges.” Often, if one customer requires a certain customization, others will benefit from it as well. That kind of growing need has driven the usefulness of the online catalog, and it’s also driving the development of new popular SMRs. Let’s take a look at some of the latest SMRs from Pelco: • Corner mount for Sarix™ IL10 Value Box Camera: As IP cameras continue to be installed in more and more places, this SMR is ideal for deploying IP cameras in an elevator. • Stainless surface-mount and pendantmount Sarix IME Domes: This SMR delivers Pelco’s newest Sarix Enhanced Range IP Cameras in a stainless steel body designed for harsh and corrosive environments. • Pressurized Spectra™ HD 1080 Pendant: Similar to familiar pressurized Spectra analog systems, except now with full high-definition 1080p imaging, this SMR provides ultimate protection of the camera optics and electronics from moisture, corrosive gases, and airborne contaminants. • Smoke Detector Covert Mount: Ideal for law enforcement and corrections, this SMR provides a discreet mount for deploying cameras in interview rooms. We rely on the polycarbonate manufacturer's specification for performance data of the actual material. The temperature that is important to poly carbonate is the “glass-liquid transition temperature.” The temperature on this scale where the polycarbonate becomes less than stiff is 295°F (147°C). The temperature at which the polycarbonate melts is 310°F (155°C). These numbers come directly from the manufacturer of the polycarbonate material. In addition, the product itself has been tested at continuous 158°F (70°C) for three days with no deformation issues. WHY ARE FORTIFIED ENCLOSURES AVAILABLE ONLY AS SYSTEMS? Our Fortified systems have been engineered to provide customers with a completely tested and certified system that we guarantee will meet our published specifications for the full three-year warranty period and beyond. All Fortified systems are fully tested — including the camera and lens and all other internal accessories — and carry full certification and compliance. By providing a completely tested and guaranteed system, we save the installer time and money by eliminating the guesswork and “trial and error” process of trying to mix and match together an extreme-environment system. HOW RUGGED IS THE ENCLOSURE AGAINST HARD RAIN AND SANDSTORMS? The camera enclosure compartment and the data compartment in the wall arm are IP66 rated. The arm is IP54 rated for the power connections area, and the H series power supply itself is IP67 rated and potted in epoxy. For the H Series, the fan itself is IP54 rated. The end result is a robustly sealed and certified system that offers excellent, guaranteed protection for the camera, lens, and components. WHAT IS THE VANDAL PROTECTION AVAILABLE FOR THE ENCLOSURE? VANDAL OR IMPACT? The unit can withstand an IK10 impact = 20 joules of energy. This test was performed at -22°F (-30C) and at 140°F (60°C). In addition, a subjective test at -22°F (-30C) was performed, with a strong man swinging a 15-pound sledgehammer to the enclosure with a full swing, and no breakage of the enclosure was seen. IN THE CASE OF FH UNIT OVER TEMPERATURE, CAN THE USER BE NOTIFIED VIA THE VIDEO MANAGEMENT SYSTEM? Yes, cameras can be interfaced to Pelco and third-party VMS for over-temperature alarm. The interface specifics regarding Endura™, Digital Sentry™, and third-party VMS systems may be different, but there is ample documentation available to assist in the process. Additionally, Pelco does expose camera alarms in our API, so any third-party potentially can process the alarm should they want to write the appropriate driver. The Pelco Partner First website (partnerfirst.pelco.com) shows which partner VMS systems currently can process alarms from Pelco cameras. PP Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 43 The combination of strategic location and Schneider Electric solutions enables Green Mountain Data Center to meet high-energy efficiency standards. How to Build a Greener Data Center Green Mountain Data Center Partners with Schneider Electric for Safe Data and Near-Zero Emissions 2% Data centers currently account for 2 percent of global CO2 emissions. One data center in particular, Green Mountain Data Center in Norway, is embracing sustainability and security at the highest levels to address the environmental and security concerns of their customers. Aiming to be the greenest and most secure data center in the world, they needed efficient solutions to maximize uptime for their servers. MWIA-9HSHNR 44 | The proliferation of digital and mobile technologies is accelerating data growth worldwide, giving rise to new large-scale data centers and increased capacity in existing ones. These technologies are transforming the business environment and bringing beneficial innovations to the world. But, what’s the cost to our environment? And for businesses, how can they keep their data secure in an ever-evolving marketplace? Pelco Press Summer 2014 “For data customers, quality and security are non-negotiable factors. And with high energy costs, CO2 neutrality becomes a decisive factor when choosing a data vendor,” says Knut Molaug, CEO of Green Mountain. So they chose flexible, scalable Schneider Electric™ data center solutions to help meet their aggressive sustainability and security goals. Sustainability Plus Security Equals Peace of Mind Given that data centers currently account for 2 percent of global CO2 emissions, trends toward larger data centers with more capacity are fast-becoming a major source of concern when it comes to global sustainability. In response, Green Mountain embraced sustainability strategies to reduce their carbon footprint. Their data center is a 21,000-million-square-foot facility built 328 feet inside a mountain in Norway adjacent to the North Sea. It is located in a former high-security NATO ammunition facility, which means that there was minimal impact on the environment during the construction and development phases. And its location also keeps it safe from even the most damaging man-made and natural forces. “The surrounding natural resources, combined with flexible, scalable, and reliable Schneider Electric data center solutions allows Green Mountain to tap into different power grids, while ensuring power supply safety to its customers,” says Arild Bjørkedal, vice president of IT Business of Schneider Electric in Norway. He adds, “Green Mountain had to have the best security to exploit a completely unique location.” But to further enhance their sustainability, they not only needed the right cooling and management solutions, but also a partner with the expertise to make their infrastructure optimally efficient and reliable. The Heart of the Data Center “After a thorough assessment, we decided to select Schneider Electric as our IT infrastructure, cooling, and management solutions supplier,” says Molaug. “We knew building a super-efficient data center required solutions from a provider experienced in making the most effective use of architecture and technology.” Schneider Electric solutions help Green Mountain to: Schneider Electric Symmetra™ UPS provides power to all servers in the mountain if the external power supply (consisting of three independent power supplies) and its backup (two massive diesel generators) should fail. Combined with the mountain’s security systems, it helps to ensure uptime of 99.99997 percent. “ We knew building a super efficient data center required solutions from a provider experienced in making the most effective use of architecture and technology.” – Knut Molaug, CEO of Green Mountain In case of a power outage event, Schneider Electric battery backups deliver enough emergency power to maintain operations running, from the instant the power outage event occurs to the moment the emergency generator starts up. • Provide the vital power supply to the data center • Ensure uptime and accessibility • Maximize power consumption and control • Plan and optimize operations • Oversee effective handling of racks and CPUs Near-Zero Emissions, Reliable Power The data center’s one-of-a-kind location allows it to take advantage of natural conditions to provide stable energy with near-zero emissions. Green Mountain Data Center utilizes power from renewable sources only. As a result, the company’s customers can also achieve a carbon footprint close to zero. Long rows of racks placed back-to-back to contain the heat and fill the interior of the unique customer rooms. Cooling is integrated in the floor and power available in easy distribution channels in the ceiling. PELCO CONSULTANT It’s Not What You Scale – It’s the Way That You Scale It Overcoming the Challenges of Multiple System IP Video Management Solutions In recent installments of Pelco Consultant, we’ve discussed the benefits of aggregation as an approach for accessing and administering multiple remote IP video surveillance systems. In this installment, we will look deeper into the complexities of video system scalability, and we’ll consider a few approaches. A Basic Scenario A regional or national retail chain is a great example of an enduser customer that would have multiple sites, with multiple video cameras at each site. Let’s suppose that each retail location is roughly 3,000 to 3,500 square feet, and each has from nine to 24 cameras per site. The cameras watch entries and exits, provide coverage of the showroom floor to watch over merchandise and people, exterior cameras monitor parking lots and entrances, and inside a few cameras are dedicated to capturing image detail at the cash register/transaction desk. MWIA-9HSJKB First and foremost, the video system records activity inside and outside the retail location, providing a record of what happens, so that, in the event of an incident (theft, vandalism, slip and fall) we can review the recorded video and hopefully find evidence that will identify “who did what” and will lead to appropriate decisionmaking and resolution: arrest and prosecution of a burglar, settlement of an injury claim, etc. To meet these purposes, a relatively few number of people actually need access to video – the manager of each location, a regional supervisor, security staff, and maybe someone in corporate facilities. If the number of locations and the number of users are relatively small, traditional video management systems (VMS) can offer sufficient flexibility to manage those users’ permissions and privileges. As a general guideline, with 10 or more systems to manage, administration begins to get unwieldy. 58 | Pelco Press Summer 2014 Growing Complexity… More, More, More Use of video in organizations, like the retail chain in our example, is growing, and it’s growing in any way that you measure it. More sites. More users. More reach. More sites. Suppose an individual in the organization needs to access the local video system at each location. Your master system has to account for that individual user at each site. If that person needs access to 10 sites, you have to manage 10 accounts for that person. That means either: that user needs to remember 10 different logins (one for each system she/he needs to access), or the system manager needs to manage the synchronization of this one user’s account across all those 10 sites. If an administrator is managing across all these remote systems, then she/he has to do this synchronization for each user. More users. As we’ve noted in the past, a growing trend is that organizations are realizing that video data can be used for more than just security and surveillance. Sales and marketing professionals can use video to analyze traffic flows, to ensure that local stores are displaying appropriate, timely promotional materials. Facilities managers can look for safety compliance and potential issues. And so on. With just a little thought, it’s easy to imagine a growing number of non-traditional users — all seeking video data to improve their decisionmaking and improve the organization’s operations. That means there will be a need to support more and more users. More reach. As an organization grows, the reach of a single employee is continuing to expand. She/he needs to see more and more sites, and access more and more systems. Additionally, the people who report to this individual now need access to additional sites. His direct reports need video – this expands the user base. We are also broadening the types of users. We’re introducing new user profiles that require different sets of permissions. We need to set additional parameters — who can access video? Which cameras can they access? What frame-rate can they stream? How do we accommodate law enforcement access to video? How do we provide video for regulatory oversight? This brings increasingly complex sets of user roles and permissions. With each new site and each new user, the administrator’s job becomes complex and burdensome. How to deal with it all? One possibility is that every time you add a site, you could add staff to deal with administration, but this is fraught with risk: It’s costly to hire new people, it opens you up to multiple humanerror mistakes across all your systems, and without careful controls, permissions can lapse, and people who’ve left the company can still access video. Another choice is to deploy a centrally managed VMS (Video-Management System) solution, in which the core head end is in your central location, with satellite/remote systems. The advantage of this approach is a single user store-repository, a single set of permissions to manage, a single set of accounts to manage. However, this approach requires a very reliable connection between remote systems and central system, because every time remote users log in, they need to authenticate to central system. This type of approach is very networkdependent and tends to be very expensive. (Think high-end, enterprise class). Another approach would be a mini-federation, by placing a federated server at each location. This approach mitigates the real-time network-dependency problem; however, when network connection goes down, you still have to deal with reconciling any conflicts that occur when people change records/data while the central system is down. Also, this tends to be expensive — because it requires adding an expensive high-end federation server at each site in addition to the existing remote system. These servers tend to be at an expensive, high-end, enterprise-class price. You could try to purchase a bunch of DVRs and network video recorders (NVRs) and create your own system to centralize the management of those accounts. You could write to each DVR’s/NVR’s application programming interface (API) to coordinate with some sort of user database you create based on LDAP (Lighweight Directory Access Protocol). It’s similar to a centrally managed system, but you benefit from use of software development kits (SDKs) for automatic updating. There are costs, and you’re limited by the capabilities of the NVR SDK you use. There can be limits to the granularity of permissions control offered by a particular NVR’s SDK. For it to work successfully, you must have a strict process in place for when and how you do system updates, permissions updates, etc. An Aggregation Solution The solution that Pelco™ by Schneider Electric™ is moving forward with is aggregation. System aggregation uses a virtual machine (an aggregation server), which can be installed anywhere in your network, to unite various remote systems. The benefit of the aggregation server is that it allows you to deploy individual (remote) systems, but at run-time, you can access all systems and pull up the current state of permission access. You can add users, change users’ roles, and you can push updates out to remote systems. System aggregation leverages the data store at each remote system. You don’t have to maintain one single, centralized system representation. Instead, you’re always getting the latest state of the system when you log in and call up the permissions store, because it’s the aggregate of the permissions on all of the systems you’ve aggregated. PP Visit pelco.com For more information about system aggregation. Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 59 NOW SHIPPING! PP Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 63 NEW TECHNOLOGY MWIA-9HSHCV The Future of Video Surveillance — Panoramic Cameras 64 | The big video surveillance camera category to watch in 2014 is the 180/360 degree panoramic network cameras, with global unit shipments forecasted to increase by more than 60 percent year-on-year, according to IHS, the industry leader in video surveillance trends. In particular, 180/360 degree cameras are predicted to gain market share in verticals such as retail, airports, and casinos, where monitoring wide indoor areas is a key requirement of the video surveillance system. In these scenarios, the cameras can reduce capital expenditure as fewer cameras are required to cover the same area. Pelco Press Summer 2014 180/360 degree panoramic cameras are available in two general configurations: • Multi-sensor cameras where multiple image sensors and standard lenses are arranged in either a unidirectional or multidirectional array. Separate images can be stitched together either on the edge or at the central server. • Lens-based megapixel network cameras are typically paired with either a fisheye lens or a panomorph lens. “ the network video recorder (NVR), such as Pelco’s Digital Sentry™ or other compatible platforms, provides an immersive experience that allows you to go back in time to retrospectively view the total scene in its original form and then pan, tilt, and/or zoom within the 360-degree image — just like you can on a live image. This is an exciting partnership. We are delighted Pelco has recognized the quality of our 360-degree technology and the value it brings to its customers as it seeks to meet the growing demand for this technology in the marketplace. While opportunities exist for both configurations, the lensbased panoramic camera market is predicted to be the faster growing of the two markets. Historically, lens-based panoramic cameras have suffered from the need for proprietary dewarping software. However, with the development of dewarping technology, panoramic cameras now have a much wider compatibility into video management software platforms. New integrations, combined with increasing availability of panoramic cameras, will help the product category meet increasing customer demand. What is a Retrospective Immersive Experience? The best way to explain the retrospective immersive experience is to imagine stepping back in time and having the ability to pan, tilt, and zoom around the scene — just like you would on a live image. If an incident or event occurred yesterday, you would have the ability to play back the clip from the time just before the event took place, and just like you would when viewing a live scene, you could pan, tilt, and zoom around the scene as the video clip played. You would play the clip forward and backward as you unraveled and analyzed the detail. While panoramic cameras provide a complete video surveillance picture, other camera types are often required to provide more detailed images. Therefore, IHS predicts that panoramic cameras will increasingly be combined with pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) dome cameras. In these cases, the panoramic camera can be used to provide a constant overview to identify points of interest and supply coordinates for an optical zoom PTZ camera to focus on, providing the more detailed images. According to IHS, the combined panoramic camera and PTZ camera solutions will increase operational efficiency and reduce PTZ operator errors. Taking the Next Step in 360-Degree Total Situational Awareness Pelco™ by Schneider Electric™ and Oncam Grandeye have partnered to provide the Evolution 360-Degree camera range. This exciting joint venture combines Oncam Grandeye’s award winning 360-degree cameras and technology with Pelco’s extensive service and support, product delivery, and warranty fulfillment. With client-side dewarping and retrospective analysis, you have the best forensic tool available on the market today. Dewarping on This unique ability to investigate and establish facts of interest in relation to a past event or an incident that is happening now enables security, loss prevention, and health and safety personnel to forensically analyze what happened leading up to, during, and after the event, across the entire scene as if you were there. The entire history of the scene is accessible for you to interrogate, in a way that is both familiar and user friendly to CCTV system users. Advantages of Client-Side Dewarping Panoramic cameras are offered with either dewarping on the camera or on the client application. Experience has proven that there is a significant advantage when the dewarping is performed on the client-side application versus doing the dewarping in the camera. Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 65 NEW TECHNOLOGY As technology moves forward, improvements are being made in image quality and user experience. Likewise, technology is becoming more simple, flexible, and interactive to use. And like everything else, video management systems (VMS) are advancing. Dewarping on the client side allows for retrospective viewing, which enables the user to go back in time to view the total scene in its original form and then pan, tilt, and/or zoom within the 360-degree image as desired. The patented Oncam Grandeye approach to dewarping uses the graphics processing unit (GPU), which significantly reduces the impact on the processing required by the central processing unit (CPU), and gives a seamless user experience with zero latency. An additional advantage to dewarping on the client side is the ability for multiple clients to view the same image, with different perspectives, concurrently; there is no time slicing required as with traditional PTZ cameras or 360-degree cameras with dewarping on the camera. Dewarping on the camera lets the customer create virtual views or narrow-field windows that create blind spots similar to conventional cameras. The windows may be moved using PTZ commands over the network, and will then have latency similar to what is currently associated with mechanical PTZ cameras. use as much as 20 percent of the CPU’s power, based on the size of the image and frame rate. Traditionally, with hardware dewarping and PTZing, the images do not require additional dewarping and this further reduces the CPU load. The result is that by using GPU/OpenGL there is no latency when the client uses PTZ commands for a different perspective, and the bilinear filtering, which is used in the dewarping process, ensures minimal resolution loss on the dewarped images. Lenses There is a lot of confusion when it comes to representing the true resolution of a 360-degree camera. However, there are some simple mathematics that can help end users and integrators check exactly what resolution they are getting. Most manufacturers use a 5 Mpx sensor, or 2592 x 1944 pixels, and the image is then cropped to the size of the lens, or a circle within a rectangle. The circle, therefore, has a diameter of 1944 pixels and the following equation is used to calculate the true resolution. A = (RxR) x PiOR A = (972x972) x Pi when A = 2.9 Mpx Dewarping on the camera does not allow the ability to retrospectively view the 360-degree image, which is one of the biggest advantages of using 360-degree cameras. In addition, and similar to a conventional PTZ camera, all users need to view the same image at the same time or request a time slice to control the camera, severely limiting its usefulness for remote viewing by different clients at the same time. Oncam Grandeye has developed SDK’s for multiple platforms that can be integrated into any client-side application. In the Oncam Grandeye case these come with patented dewarping technology using OpenGL and 3D modeling techniques to project a texture map of the image onto p-surface (a 3D object, generated by a computer graphic system). This takes advantage of current state-of-the-art GPUs, which reduce the load on the CPU. Performing dewarping on the CPU could 66 | Pelco Press Summer 2014 Figure 1: 5 Mpx sensor with 2.9 Mpx image Oncam Grandeye, with more than 10 years experience in developing 360-degree technology, matches the sensor to the lens, maximizing the resolution and providing the very best 360-degree solution. It uses the same 5 Mpx sensor and crops it first to 2144 x 1944, and then matches the lens to the diameter of 2144. This gives Oncam Grandeye cameras a true resolution of 3.5 Mpx, providing a clearer image and Figure 2: 5 Mpx sensor with 3.5 Mpx image improved situational awareness over other manufacturers. In Conclusion There really are no limits on how 360-degree technology, coupled with the best patented 3D dewarping technology and integrated into the VMS, can add value. The many facets of the Evolution 360-Degree Cameras and its forensic capabilities are literally limitless, ranging in every application imaginable from city surveillance to retail to gaming, and more. “This is an exciting partnership. PP Pelco Press Summer 2014 | 67 INDUSTRY BOOT CAMP Pelco Hosts Women in Industry Boot Camp More than 50 businesswomen came together as part of the National Association of Electronic Distributors (NAED) Women in Industry Boot Camp, hosted at the Pelco™ by Schneider Electric™ Clovis, Calif. campus on April 17, 2014. The inspiring one-day boot camp was comprised of a network of women in business ranging from new-to-the-industry professionals, to experts from various channels within the electronics industry. MWIA-9HSJF5 The National Association of Electronic Distributors is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving and protecting the electrical distribution channels. 68 | Pelco Press Summer 2014 The goal of the boot camp was to foster relationships, build a strong network of individuals who share common career aspirations, and share and learn tips for success in the electrical industry. Session topics included “Identifying Employer Expectations,” “Managing the Unexpected,” and “How Women Can Fire Up Their Brand to Get Noticed, Get Ahead, and Get the Business.” Pelco Global Training Director Barbara Morgan gave an informative presentation titled, “Managing the Unexpected,” where she explained that today’s professionals are likely to experience acquisitions, mergers, reengineering, and technology shifts throughout their work life. Morgan led a discussion to help the audience share ideas about how changes created by unexpected events often impact career plans, job satisfaction and compensation, and knowing how to respond effectively and recognize the opportunities associated with change can keep careers on track. The presentations were followed by a lunch and awards event, as well as discussions on how to best use the resources of the NAED and other networking opportunities. Session panelist and Pelco Video Line of Business Vice President — North America Sales, Stephanie Mayes said, “ I was honored to join a panel of such a diverse and talented group of women within the industry. While we all have different past experiences, we all share common career goals and the opportunity to connect and network with such an extraordinary group of women is empowering. ” ↘ Visit the Women in Industry forum at www.NAED.org for more information.
