Coffee with Class: “ The U.S. Immigration Policy: How We Have Arrived Where We Are Today” with

Cost: $25.00 per person (includes breakfast-style refreshments)
Immigration is one of the top issues in the 2016 presidential election. An overview of history of American
immigration from the 17th century to the present will be addressed, including push and pull factors of
immigration.

Presidential elections often raise questions about the relationship between politics and religion. What role
should religion play in our decisions about how we vote? What, if anything, should churches and
institutionalized religion say about the approaching elections? These questions and more are the focus of this talk.
“Making Sense of the 2016 Elections: Who won, who lost, who cares!” with Dr. David Schultz, Political

The 2016 elections are finally over! This talk will examine who won, lost and why, and will examine the main
themes, issues, forces, and factors that defined the 2016 presidential, congressional, and Minnesota legislative races,
while seeking to understand what the election results mean for 2016 and beyond.

The political landscapes of Europe between the two World Wars was dominated by non-democratic regimes. We’ll examine
the rise and decline of Communism and Fascism (and their variations) and reasons for their (not) surprising popularities.

Our blue planet is dominated by a vast ocean that is fascinating for its size, its remarkable wildlife, and the large degree to
which it is still unknown. This course will explore the geological, biological, and chemical characteristic of the ocean, and
humans’ unprecedented impact on the ocean.

The Great War, 1914-1918, was unwanted, unexpected, and devastating; it began a century of war, reduced or eliminated
rights and liberties, and introduced perverted ideologies into human thought. Why and how did it start, what was its course
and cost, and what, if any, were its benefits?

Learners in this program audit regular undergraduate classes alongside younger students on a
space-available basis.

A list of eligible courses will be printed and available for viewing during the registration
dates; call the Center with any questions on availability.

You may preview this information online at http://www.stthomas.edu/classes and select
the Fall 2016 term. A preview list of eligible courses will also be published on the
Center’s web site the day before registration opens.

Cost: $100 per course; limit of 2 courses per student.

You are also responsible for the cost of textbooks and on-campus parking, and any
other fees incurred (such as copying services or library fines).
Live registration is required in the Center’s campus office for this program, only (in Loras Hall,
Room 309).

The Learning Circles are designed to be student-led opportunities to explore a subject in depth. Each
circle will have a University instructor to lead the first session to provide guidance for future sessions
and to lead the discussion at the first gathering. Cost of each circle is $20.00 per person for fall term.

With a dynamic fall looming politically, this group will facilitate learning about and discussing
the issues. Learners planning to enroll in the Schultz talk are especially encouraged to enroll in
this group!
Learning Circle #3, 10:00-11:00 a.m.: Book Discussion Group
This group will have an assigned first reading and will receive ideas for future group meetings at
their first session. Anyone who loves to read and learners planning to enroll in the English
Sampler are especially encouraged to enroll in this group!

Open to anyone who loves sports! We’ll meet in Loras 309 for our first session for a fun
