JAMES REANEY LECTURE:
DOUGLAS GIBSON: ACROSS CANADA BY STORY
London Public Library is proud to
bring this year’s James Reaney
Lecture to Words, featuring John
Beckwith, Reaney’s close friend
and collaborator.
Returning to London with a new
one-man stage show based on his
second memoir, Across Canada
by Story, Douglas Gibson shares
his stories about Canadian literary
icons.
becoming an author himself. He
also has fond memories of our
own London where he spent his
first Christmas in Canada, and had
his first meeting in 1974 with Alice
Munro.
The late James Crear Reaney
is a celebrated Canadian poet,
playwright, dramatist, novelist,
literary critic and artist.
Gibson spent 40 plus years editing
the works of some of Canada’s
greatest literary legends before
Enjoy these entertaining adventures
from one of Canada’s premier
storytellers at this year’s Words
Festival.
John Beckwith, retired University of
Toronto Dean of Music, will discuss
his collaborations with James
Reaney on operas such as Taptoo!
and radio sound collages. He will
outline the extent to which Reaney’s
early listening experiences and
music lessons affected his approach
to writing. Throughout his lecture he
will use recorded musical excerpts.
Reaney and Beckwith worked
closely together with what some
have noted as mutual literary and
musical influences.

CROUCH BRANCH
BORROW
A BIKE LOCK
All our library
locations have bike
locks you can borrow
while you’re
visiting us.
On June 6 the bike corral in
front of the Central Library
was unveiled with City
Council, Library staff and
local cycling advocates in
attendance.
In response to public feedback, the City of
London launched new cycling supports in
London: bike corrals and bike fix-it stations.
London Public Library is pleased to partner
with the City in this initiative to host a
bike corral at Central and a fix-it station at
Crouch Branch.
These initiatives support and
encourage more Londoners
to ride downtown and
throughout the city.

Revitalization

CHILDREN’S LIBRARY
The Children’s Library will be temporarily re-located on the
main floor while their permanent space is renovated. Ask us for
locations of Storytimes and other programs.
ELEVATORS AND ENTRANCES
During construction, access to Central’s 2nd and 3rd floor is by
elevator. There is also a temporary 2nd floor entrance and exit
from Citi Plaza for your convenience. You can check out, return,
validate parking and get help at our 2nd floor Service Desk in
addition to the main floor Service Desk.
WASHROOMS
WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED A
LOT IN THE FIRST PHASE OF
CONSTRUCTION AND ARE ONSCHEDULE AND ON-BUDGET
WITH THE PROJECT.
SOME HIGHLIGHTS:
Construction of the stairs is well
underway with 10,000 pounds of
structural steel installed.
No washrooms will be available on the 2nd floor or in the relocated Children’s Library during Phase 2. Washrooms are
available in our Passageway on the main floor and on the 3rd
floor.
New paint, flooring and a re-located
entrance have really opened up our
main floor arrivals area.
PUBLIC COMPUTERS
Work continues on our new
main floor Magazine and
Reading Lounge.
Public computers have been moved to new areas on both the
2nd and 3rd floors. Visitor passes for computers are available
on the 2nd floor.
SECOND FLOOR:
Construction has begun on the south side of the 2nd floor while
the north side remains accessible. No washrooms are available.
A temporary entrance from Citi Plaza and a Service Desk are
available on the 2nd floor.
THIRD FLOOR
Public computers are now available on the 3rd floor in
addition to the 2nd floor.
Our goal throughout construction, which
is scheduled to continue until next spring, is
to keep our services and resources as available
to you as possible. We appreciate your patience
as we work through this exciting period of change.
BOOKS AND MATERIALS
Many of our books and other materials
will be shifting location over the
coming months. Let us help you
find what you need.
As the renovation of the
Children’s Library begins, the
“red wall” has been replaced with
beautiful glass panels which will provide
a view into the Children’s Library and
Reading Garden.
There may be some short interruptions to our hours or services
and other news, so please check our website or call us at 519-6614600 for the most up-to-date construction news.

JOIN US AT THE FAIR
Look for the Library at the Western
Fair. We’ll be there with our amazing
straw bale maze – where we’ve
hidden some of our favourite farm
books. Children and families love
finding the books and taking the
challenge that goes with each one.
We’ll be in the Progress Building
September 9 to 11 and 14 to 18.
FLYING HIGH
The Western Fair Library Challenge
You created the most beautiful kites at our library locations
over the summer. They will be displayed at the Western Fair
in the Creative Arts Competition area. We can’t wait to see
them all. Thank you for taking the challenge and thanks to
Western Fair District for sponsoring this program.
Thank you to Western Fair District for their generous support of

“knitting with friends is
better than knitting alone”
Camaraderie is important for many in the
Beacock Knitters group. For some, their weekly
visit with their knitting friends at the Library is
an essential part of their social life. One knitter
comes with her Personal Support Worker.
Everyone is welcomed and encouraged.
“art mingles with socializing”
The Beacock Knitters get together to
work on projects, learn new skills and,
best of all, share time with each other.
It includes all ages, from children as
young as four to a member who recently
turned 90. The group started six years
ago with three members. Now 25 to
35 knitters come together weekly
to create and socialize. Expert
knitters teach those who
are learning and special
workshops help everyone
learn new techniques.
Currently the knitters are working on a blanket
for a group member in the hospital. Everyone
is taking part in the stitching of a gift that will
represent the beauty of their craft and the value
of friendship.

WHAT WE’RE READING
Lana is reading Gone
by James Patterson
and Michael Ledwidge
Lana: “eBooks! Never! I have to touch
and feel my books when I read!
Well... my tune certainly changed
after I received a tablet as a birthday
gift a few years ago. Now I only read
on my device. I love it!
I also love James Patterson books!
Having devoured his entire Alex
Cross series, I’ve recently moved on
to detective Michael Bennett and his
heroic exploits with the NYPD (coauthored by James Patterson and
Michael Ledwidge). A truly riveting
series thus far.
I’m currently on Book 6, Gone, where he continues his face-off against
Mexican crime lord Manuel Perrine. After Micheal arrests Perrine
in Book 5, I, Michael Bennett, death and havoc reign all around as
Perrine’s people exact revenge. Michael’s family is now on the run
as, apparently, nowhere is safe for them after Micheal kills Perrine’s
wife and unborn child. I CANNOT wait to see how it ends!!!”
Lana is a librarian at London Public Library. For more staff picks see
our website.
Michael and his ten adopted
children live in New York city. We
are introduced to him grieving his
wife Maeve as she battles end-stage
cancer. When she dies (in Book 1), he
forges on, juggling work and home
life, determined to successfully raise
his ten children AND save New York
City.
In Book 1, Step on a Crack, he is
called to duty right in the middle
of his grief when a hostage crisis
happens at a state funeral of an
erstwhile First Lady. His first priority
is to save the lives of hundreds of
church attendees. A good negotiator,
Bennett eventually succeeds in
saving the lives of celebrities,
politicians and big names in social
circles by facing the hostage-taker
Jack... It only gets better from there.

EMMA`S
STORY
As a keen reader and library borrower
herself, Emma has raised her children to
love books too. Reading to her children
has been a much-loved activity over
the years, as have family outings to
Landon Branch in their community.
SHE LOVES LIBRARIES
WHAT AUTHORS INSPIRED
YOU AS A WRITER?
“So hard to choose… but I’d have to mention
AUSTEN, DICKENS AND SHAKESPEARE as three I
grew up with.”
3 OF HER FAVOURITE BOOKS
THE BAROQUE CYCLE BY NEAL STEPHENSON
“Erudite, page-turning and funny. Set in the world
of late seventeenth-century science.”
ALICE IN WONDERLAND BY LEWIS CARROLL
“A memorably weird story for all ages that
doesn’t seem to date at all. My kids have a great
iPad enhanced eBook version in which the props
move.”
THE BIBLE
“Probably the most important source for my work.
Its storylines show up over and over in what I
write. I particularly enjoyed moving the tale of
David and Jonathan (yes, that is Jonathan) to a
Yorkshire boys’ soccer team for one short story.”
“I feel strongly that the kinds of
wonderful intellectual stimulus and
social interaction a public library
system can offer should be equally free
and available to all. Commercial play
spaces, cafes and bookstores are not
the same thing at all. I have often done
events at LPL branches and treasure
the chance to bring my books to readers
in a non-commercial context.”
EMMA DONOGHUE is an award-winning
author of fiction, drama and literary
history. The feature film, Room, which
she adapted for the screen from her
novel, was nominated for four Academy
Awards. She will be reading from her
newest book, The Wonder, at Words
Festival. An active London Public Library
user, Emma has generously shared
her talent through author readings in
our locations. She lives in the heart of
London, Ontario with her family.
We remember when Emma’s novel, Room, was
shortlisted for the prestigious Man Booker Prize
for Fiction in 2010. Crowds came out to her
reading at Landon Branch. Her favourite moment:
“Out of all the Man Booker Prize hoo-ha, I think
the evening I’ll never forget is when I walked
down to the Library and saw a queue of people
around the block for my reading!”
